SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - It was a fitting ending for the former South Eugene High standout and Oregon's own Maddy Elmore to come away with the women's individual title in her final Dellinger Invitational.
In front of friends and family members, the Oregon senior covered the 6-kilometer race in 19:40.20 to win by over nine seconds in her first race since completing the outdoor track and field season in May.
"This means so much to me just being at home," Elmore said. "I was pretty devastated with how my outdoor season ended. This is my first race back since outdoor basically, and I didn't run at all this summer, so it just means so much. I've always wanted to win Dellinger, and I was going to sit this one out again, but I was like, 'Shalane, this is my last cross country race in Eugene.' It couldn't have been a better ending."
Elmore, along with the rest of the field, saw an early lead develop by Montana State's Kyla Christopher-Moody by as much as five seconds through the first kilometer.
By the completion of the first 2-kilometer loop, Elmore went right by Christopher-Moody, who finished in 10th in 20:18.3, building a lead to eight seconds coming up to the halfway mark.
Elmore's lead grew by as much as 17 seconds at 5-kilometers, then closed to nine seconds on the last kilometer, with Utah's Erin Vringer trying to run down Elmore in the final 150-meter stretch.
No. 6 Utah carried over its success from their second-place finish at Nuttycombe, scoring 25 points to win the team title behind all five scorers finishing in the top 10.
Led by Vringer in second in 19:49.80, McKaylie Caesar was next for the Utes in third in 19:58, with Morgan Jensen (20:06.70, fifth), Katarzyna Nowakowska (20:06.90, sixth) and Annastasia Peters (20:16.60, ninth) in the scoring mix.
Elmore's individual win led No. 12 Oregon to finish second to Utah with 53 points. Anika Thompson also managed a top 10 finish for the Ducks, running 20:13 for eighth overall.
Nebraska picked up 105 points to finish third, with Berlyn Schutz (20:06.2) and Ali Bainbridge (20:08.6, seventh) as the top individuals for the Cornhuskers.
Oregon State, led by Kate Laurent in 11th in 20:18.6, finished fourth with 135 points. UCLA rounded out the top five with 148 points.

I would'nt exactly class running around a golf course as cross country. Cross country is more running up and down hills, legs being covered in mud, and your arms and legs being red with the cold weather. Nice job, though. Try doing a cross country run in Scotland, completely different.
