I believe we all have to thanks to the late maestro Mariss Jansons, for setting the foundations of the Oslo Philharmonic sound, and their special affinity to Tchaikovsky.
Why do people never comment on the 3rd movement of this symphony it's absolutely fantastic and very difficult to play , this symphony by Tchaikovsky is the best in all classical music.
We have a saying here in England....."you are as welcome as the flowers in May" - this is how I see this wonderful orchestra from Norway who are playing for us in these sad and anxious times. Beautiful playing, beautiful sound quality, excellent conducting. A very special thankyou to you all. You are so appreciated. Much love from the UK.
Glorious sound from this very fine orchestra and wonderful conductor: lush strings, resonant and heroic brass, and beautiful, elegant woodwind, doing some lovely 'conversational' ensemble playing. Thank you for lifting our spirits in these gloomy times. Bravissimi!
I heard the Oslo Philharmonic with Petrenko interpreting Tchaikosky's 5th and thought it was exceptional... It turns out this was their norm!! Apparently all their work is on that exceptional level of professionalism; crystal clear, neat and outstanding... Looking forward so much to enjoying Manfred from you guys
I. Andante sostenuto (0:08) II. Andantino in modo di canzona (18:39) III. Scherzo - Pizzicato ostinato. Allegro (29:01) IV. Finale - Allegro con fuoco (34:31)
Wow. Very clean and crisp performance. I am so impressed with the Oslo Philharmonic. World class performance. Bravo. I'll be listening to the Oslo Philharmonic a lot more from now on..
My jaw is on the floor right now. I heard this music in a Jan Svankmajer film called Conspirators of Pleasure and had no idea it was Tchaikovsky until just now.
I first heard this when I was about 12 -- it was used as the theme music for a BBC series "Ivanhoe". I didn't know what it was so went to the local music shop and described it. he man in the shop thought it might be Tchaikovsky so I started with 6. No. Then 5. No. Finally 4. That was it. Loved it ever since.
Amazing rendition. Neearly flawless finish; it's just not the same without the ruckus applause to close out a Tchaikovsky symphony. In all seriousness, these performances were a godsend during lockdowns. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
A Stunning performance!! ... Such beautiful music..🎶🎵... Great orchestra & conductor... Very soothing & moving.... So happy that I found this on You-Tube.. 🙏🙂
If I was told I could only listen to two classical pieces the rest of my life, the list would include the 2nd movement of Beethoven's 7th Symphony and the 2nd movement here. Thank you. Must admit I would be hard pressed to give up my opera though, like Pavarotti's "Nessum Dorma", Damrau's "Queen of the Night", and all the Wagner operas.
Fantastic performance. This symphony is not easy. It is filled with symbolic music material that has to be regarded in the interpretation. From the ide fixe of a polonaise (dance macabre) of destiny the music turns into a melancoly waltz (in 9/8) but with a remarkable drive. 2nd movement is the only movement in the music history that describes boredom without getting boring. 3rd movement is amazing the 3 levels of a balalaika orchestra,a drunk person in the street and a military orchestra is far a head of the time as an image. And the 4th movement is just great with the russian folk song that is happy and sad at the same time. Just a supirior piece of art is this symphony. It is so well performed in this video. Wished I was there. Kim Helweg Composer
Strange how you remember snippets of music from decades ago. The opening 30 seconds was the BBC Ivanhoe from 1970. Guess that is the power of (great) music. Russian music seemed popular especially on Children's programmes back then. Prokofiev was used on the Flaxton Boys and on Huntingtowr. I'm still trying to trace after years a piece of I think Russian music used on a Panorama Special in the 1970's about the rise of the Red Fleet. Oh well such is life!. .The finale rivals the William Tell overture for drama. Thanks for sharing this anyway great stuff!
Another great performance of Tchaikovsky by Petrenko and Oslo Philharmonic! Tchaikovsky's 4th, 5th and 6th have charted the greatest symphonic territory known to mankind. The players are exhilarated playing Tchaikovsky symphonies and the expression on the performer's face at 8:57 is a testimony to that. The nirvana moments from 7:45 to 10:45 are out of this world; particularly from 9:40 to 10:40 when every section of orchestra play a different phrase magically blended into what is a "Tchaikovsky miracle". You would see similar passages in most Tchaikovsky works and again here between 22:40 and 24:30. Have heard for thousands of times but always sound fresh.
One thing I find outstanding about this performance and recording is the (soft/loud) dynamics that are not always distinguishable on RUclips videos of symphony recordings. Sound engineers did a great job here. And I also love the quick transition from the third to the fourth movement, it really accentuates the emotion of that section.
So fantastic and poignant a performance, with the orchestra socially distanced and no audience! What a terrible time it was, not knowing if there would ever be audiences and public performances again, but musicians play on regardless, always, ALWAYS giving our best. Bravissimo!!
The conductor would take some getting used to by musicians. A friend who is in this orchestra says they have “figured our his odd beat patterns”. Nice performance of this war horse of a piece.

Just recently found this magnificent orchestra from Oslo.
This has become a world-class orchestra, bravo Oslo Philharmonic! one of the best Tchaikovsky's I have ever heard.
Why do people never comment on the 3rd movement of this symphony it's absolutely fantastic and very difficult to play , this symphony by Tchaikovsky is the best in all classical music.
It's mindboggingly beautiful.
Magnificent music.
3rd movement is one of my least favorite movements of any symphony. Truthfully though you have to hear it live. Recordings never do it justice.
Eyeball roll from one music lover to another - its the Pits icato for you. Lol.
This orchestra is fabulous, and this Tchaikovsky 4 is outstanding...the piccolo player nailed the third movement!!

Maestro Vasily Petrenko um dos melhores maestros da nova geração. BRAVO!!!
18:17 the second part, a heavenly beautiful thing.
Glorious sound from this very fine orchestra and wonderful conductor: lush strings, resonant and heroic brass, and beautiful, elegant woodwind, doing some lovely 'conversational' ensemble playing. Thank you for lifting our spirits in these gloomy times. Bravissimi!
Congratulations Oslo Philharmonic and the technical team that tape this concerts. They are a delight! Greetings from México!

Vasily really does get Romantic Russian music doesn't he? What a guy!
An exciting performance like this reminds us that Tchaikovsky was a supreme genius on his best days.
I filled in that quiet part at the end with my own standing ovation! Wonderful wonderful job! “Bravissimo!”

Fantastic timpanist. Standing while playing his drums rather than sitting down. BRAVO
Remarkable transition so quickly from 3rd to 4th movement, breathtaking exhilarating ending!
Bravo, Bravo, Bravo,,,,,, it is magnificent , it is exciting, I will never tire of listening to this again and again.

This interpretation is the best I've ever heard, it's comforting, thrilling and magically beautiful.
Absolutely flawless! I have heard Tchaikovsky's #4 from many orchestras in many halls, but this is simply the best!!

II Mov. Oboe solo is the best! Clarinet section is outstanding! WOW Oslo Phil a terrific ensemble!
Excellent performance and excellent orchestra and conductor. Thank you!!
Absolutely terrific. I love this orchestra. Superb.
Great Russian music is coming directly from Oslo and we have to blame Vassily for that... An awesome orchestra with an extraordinary conductor!!💖💖💖

2악장 중간부에 브릿지 테마식으로 짧고 환상적인 테마가 잠깐 등장하는데 그부분을 연주하는 단원들 역시 황홀함에 빠져 도취되는걸 표정에서 엿볼수있음. 차이코프스키는 우릴 미치게 한다. the great composer

Oboe solo is perfect. Some think Russian orchestras play russian music better, but there are no oboists playing like this.
Why there is only one player in the 1st desks?
Woooowwwww 😯
Wow! With the social distancing required the string players could not share a desk . Page turning predicament?
