  • Soft, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth cookies with an easy buttercream frosting.
Homemade Lofthouse style sugar cookies are easy to make and better than anything in the grocery store.
    Ingredients (Makes 12 cookies)
    -Cookies
    Butter, softened ½ cup (113 g)
    Sugar ½ cup (100 g)
    Sour Cream 2 tbsp (30 g)
    1 Large Egg White (35 g)
    Salt ½ tsp (3 g)
    Baking Powder 1 tsp (4 g)
Vanilla Extract 1 tsp (5 mL)
    Cake Flour 1 ¼ cup (160 g)
    -Frosting
    Butter, softened ¼ cup (56 g)
    Powdered Sugar 1 ¼ cup (150 g)
    Salt ⅛ tsp
Vanilla Extract ½ tsp (2.5 mL)
Milk 1-2 tbsp (15-30 mL) (as needed)
    Sprinkles (optional)
    Directions
    1. Preheat oven to 350º F (180º C).
    2. Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add sour cream and egg white and continue beating until well incorporated. Add salt, baking powder and vanilla extract and mix until combined.
    3. Sift flour into batter and stir to combine.
    4. Scoop 2 tablespoon (37 g) portions of cookie dough onto a parchment lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated 350º F (180º C) oven for 10-12 minutes, or until just set (cookies should not brown). Cool completely before frosting.
    5. To make the frosting, beat softened butter, powdered sugar, salt, vanilla extract and milk until light and fluffy. Stir in a few drops of desired food coloring.
    6. Spread or pipe frosting on cooled cookies, top with sprinkles and allow frosting to set before stacking.

I actually tried this recipe and they turned out good. They had a similar taste and texture but I think there was a little bit too much salt. I’d rate it a 9.5/10

Yes, double all the ingredients. This recipe scales very easily for multiple batches.

Can you use regular flour and baking soda if you don’t have cake flower? 😭

      You can replace the 1 ¼ cup (160 g) cake flour with 1 cup + 2 tablespoons (135 g) all purpose flour and 2 tablespoons (16 g) cornstarch.

Yogurt typically works well as a substitute for sour cream. I haven't tested it with this recipe specifically, but I think a thick/Greek style yogurt will work here. If you try it, I'd love to know how it goes.
