Oh wow.....Ricky Jay.....that guy was amazing! His small part in Boogie Nights was great as well. He is a legend. ❤ ✌😎 Good on you for shining a light on his brilliance!
I loooooved seeing Ricky Jay on TV for many years. Not only was his talent absolutely mesmerizing, but his audience patter was sophisticated, educational, sometimes ironic and sarcastic and always delightfully engaging. Aside from his magic work, he was an amaaaaazing card-thrower. I love seeing you honor these great magicians, Jason. It’s a treat to see how much you enjoy sharing their work with us. It makes me love you even more … you’re a great guy, a terrific magician and a credit to your art. 😉👍❤️
Ricky Jay had such passion for the art that it suffused everything that he did, and informed every aspect of his routines. His act was like a hall of mirrors that reflected the history of his craft.
Hello Mr. Maher. I'm so glad I found your channel. I found it watching RUclips shorts. You are amazing sir!... I remember watching Ricky Jay and his 52 assistants on HBO, which I believe was aired live at the time. That nonchalant move with the cards during McDonalds aces was awesome. I knew what he was doing and that something had to be hidden but he did it so well, I still had to watch it a few times. I finally figured it out and used the same move when doing my version. It's very deceptive. He was AMAZING! These are some of my favorite types of magic vids to watch. Thank you for showing this!
Ricky Jay truly was one of the greats of the magical arts. His routines were so polished and so well executed. His patter and presentation had such a way of captivating and drawing you in, harnessing your attention and masterfully directing it exactly where he wanted. Even as a magician, where you know much or all of the technique employed, you feel completely under his power. What a joy to watch him perform. RIP
I actually have this whole show recorded on a VHS tape from 1996 when it was on HBO. I absolutely became obsessed with him after seeing this. I probably watched it back about 30-40 times over the followng year, so entertaining. I completely agree about how he seems to deliberately use uncommon/sophisticated synonyms at every possible point that he can. Ricky used to do lectures and presentations in New York back in the early 2000s and I had planned on taking a trip at some point and attending one, but never got the chance. I specifically remember visiting family over Thanksgiving weekend in 2018 and hearing the news that he had passed. R.I.P. GOAT.
All you magicians are so talented. I know amongst yourselves you have your own "rankings" or whatever, but to me you're all equally great. I was like #100, how satisfying.
I loved they added Ricky Jay to the cast of Deadwood back in the day, as a Brothel Casino Manager. Even when he had no lines, it was a joy watching him do his flourishes and small slight of hand on the show.
What the? I have the full Deadwood box set and watched it twice over the years. I knew I’d seen him somewhere before but couldn’t place it. Good on you brother for pointing that out!
A common mistake we make as magicians is we jump to quickly on the end. Watch at 10:42 in this video we ask the question can they seek each other out. With this he pause his speech and relaxes and pause his movement. It great to watch.
I'm 75 years old. In the 70's, Ricky Jay, Harry Anderson and Doug Henning were my inspirations in this wonderful artform. I still practice every day. At least a little something.
Jason, you are so humble, and I thought your opening trick was not only brilliant, but the patter as well had me cracking up. You are definitely worthy of a like and a share.
The ease of his movements, lack of flash or flare, and his calm presentation turn an already beautiful art into a poetry of the hands. I happened upon "52 Assistants" whilst home sick from school one day and it has remained a favorite ever since.
If you like the videos of Ricky Jay on RUclips, you’d love his performances on various television shows in the 70s and 80s. Sadly, most of those aren’t on RUclips. There’s such a loooong line of brilliant showmen who happened to dable in magic that came before Ricky and others. I’m a lucky man whose father was a magician throughout my childhood, dad also introduced me to the greats of the 40s and 50s. Love your content sir! Keep it coming!
Jason! Thanks for showing this.. Ricky was incredible and I was lucky enough to see this show live in New York in the 90s (lines around the block.. For card tricks!!). You should know that the flowery formal patter he uses for this trick was taken verbatim from the magic section in the back of Erdnase's famous 1902 book Expert at the Card Table. He was an intellectual but here he was kind of poking fun at the stuffy old fashioned patter of bygone magicians.
We used to watch him on the various talk shows of the day. And beyond his magic, his ability to throw cards was even more impressive, sticking them in solid objects, cutting things in half with them, or many other simply incredible things he could do with cards
I saw him in a couple of films, he was in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights and Magnolia and was in Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige, he was also in 007 Tomorrow Never Dies as a henchman. Until I came across his magic shows I had no idea he was a magician.
Thanks for the daily history lessons of great magicians. Tom Mullica is still 1 of my favorites and now Ricky Jay! Slight of hand Master like you. Keep up what your doing 💯. Loving the videos, no1 else does what your do on your channel, thank you Maher.
Ricky Jay, i absolutely love his Ricky Jay and his 52 assistants. I've been practicing for quite some time now to get his card control presentation he does in that show to the standard i would like it to be at before i show it to anyone. When it comes to card magic he really knew how to create art.
Ricky Jay and his 52 assistants, I was typing this befcre you said what it was. I watched this many times when it came out, out standing stuff. He was even on the X=files and it was a great episode. Many years ago when I got to go to Atlanta I would make my way to Eddies Magic Shop. About once a month or so I would spend $100 or 2 each trip. I had to quit that delivery job, I could not keep any money, it just seemed to vanish. They say great minds think alike, I see you have some of the same trick that I have. When I saw Rick Jay do the cup and balls. I bought a set from Hank Lee's Magic catalog. But of all the greatest magician I have ever watched No one has ever better than my now, ex-wife. She made a life time of props and magical equipment vanish in one night. And like that she was gone. Sometimes wishing for something is better than actually getting it. You do the trick, Every inch a lady, right ? Great video take care and hope to see you soon.
Thank you soooo much for doing this. He has always been one of my absolute favorites and I don’t think gets enough notice because there is just not that much of him on video. I would have never wanted to play cards with him! There is a video of him with celebrities sitting at a card table playing cards. Just excellent. Love your channel and your magic. Thank you.
Love to see you going back and introducing/talking about some of the greatest magicians ever seen. I'd love to see you do more (Pop Haydn[close up, stage, and medicine show!], Rene Lavand, David Williamson, Vernon, etc). Ricky Jay's speech and mannerisms were well suited to his style and his audience. It was a time before instant info and gratification. It was a good time...
I was at a bar once alone with a "master magician" and he did a card trick while I was standing next to him and watched his hands CAREFULLY and he did this AMAZING trick and I had ZERO hint how he did it. Blew me away. So much respect.
Okay, Jason, I've now watched 3 of your videos which randomly popped up in my feed. I'm now convinced that subscribing is the right thing to do. Done. I vaguely think I've seen some of Ricky Jay's incredible work sometime in the last quarter century, but your presentation of this master made me really pay attention! I greatly appreciate your enthusiasm in all your vids-- and this was no exception! That was awesome! Thanks!
Don't put yourself down BABY !!! You are excellent and 99% of what you do, even on some slow mow settings have little idea how you do what you do !!!!! Keep it up, love your channel !!!!!
Frank Garcia published some great-looking alternative vanishes for MacDonal's Aces in Super Subtle Card Miracles in the 1970s. Probably long out of print. One is called "Super S Vanish" and the other "Bob Ellliot's Vanish." I don't think these are what Ricky was using, but some of the technique looks the same and they also appear to nonchalantly show all the backs, contributing to the miracle of each Ace's vanish. Or Queens or Kings if those are what you use. I think his published version of "MacDonald's Aces" in Stars of Magic used the same vanish three times. Or simpler vanishes. Using three different vanishes hides the secret better. Your videos are very entertaining.
Self educated as far as the patter goes but his skills he learned at the knee of the master or rather professor, Dai Vernon. Ricky Jay was the G.O.A.T.! I have watched that one several times!
It took me 25 years to figure out that Trick you did. Michael Ammar and Frank Garcia are the only fellas who do the trick close to as good as Ricky Jay. It might have taken less time if I had bothered to pay more attention to Ace assemblies. There is a learning in everything. Keep up the good work
If I remember correctly, Ricky Jay was the first magician I ever saw throw playing cards. I remember seeing him throw cards into the flesh of a water melon, then turn it around and throw a card so that it stuck into the outside of the melon.
Also, this was his go-to main set. Ricky streamlined it over decades. We can see him perform parts of this special on Johnny Carson and with much more hair. His wording was polished and movements polished as well over the years. It was great to see his growth
My admiration for you just went up considerably me old son. I was fortunate to have gone to a Ricky Jay performance when I was younger. He was an OG in his time. There is a documentary out there somewhere about his life where he talks about all the people that he thought were the OG's of their time and amazed and influenced him. You have an interesting and unique style of prattle your own self Jason. I will be gone, but hopeful you too will have a documentary about your life and who you thought where the OG's of their times and who influenced you to become a wizard! Bye the bye, my name is Jason as well, Noble Leader (Greek). Jason Robards is the only Jason I know of thats older then I!
you are too hard on yourself, your card magic is some of the best, your triumph, cards across, everything is top notch. we all need more live card tricks, even the classics, check out Pop Haydn performing card tricks at the Magic Castle, also Shin Lim is goated
You talked about him subtly flashing the backs of the cards during the routine... It was such a nice touch, I had already re-watch it to see how he avoided showing all 4 backs.
8:25 That script Ricky is using during this trick is directly out of "Expert at the card table" by S.W. Erdenase. It was written for a similar trick with a different method.
So, I just ran into you after watching Now You See Me 2 for the first time yesterday, and I will say, I'm very impressed by everything I've seen so far, sir! I love the Oroboros! I have the brothers on my bicep! I was hoping if you manage to see this, what would be some intro tips or videos you'd recommend for card tossing and twisting style tricks?
I've watched 52 Assistants a couple of times. Ricky is enthralling. If you're reviewing more YT clips, Tommy Wonder's Cups&Ball and Ambitious Card are high art.
For anybody who doesn’t know, the patter is almost word for word from Erdnase. Ricky did modify it for his version. His version was definitely cleaner than Erdnase. Ricky was also very lucky to have had the mentors that he had. I watch Deceptive Practice once every other month for inspiration.
Great commentary on one of my favorite magicians. If you want another thrill check out his video demonstrating poker with a number of celebrity friends including John C Reilly. Fantastic stuff.
Not to disparage Ricky Jay and his skill, but I would much rather watch you perform Jason. You are just as tricky and your patter keeps me more mesmerized. Thank you for always being a world class entertainer.
Love Ricky Jay's magic. Wish I could have seen him in the 52 assistants tour. You should try Tommy Cooper, Johnny Ace Palmer, Tommy Wonder, Harry Anderson, Cellini, slydini, cardini......lol. I can keep going 😂
Omg i just picked up jumping jacks from Darryl again, combined with another method from another channel but i like yours better😊 ✌️tanx for your videos.. love them and i wish i had your skills. ✌️
I just saw the whole performance and😳😳wtf mind blowing.. I'm only in magic for 4 years and limited time for practice, but did a lot of research. I know some things but this is 'out of this world'😅 (get the cardmagic-pun?😅)
sadly this video couldn't be monetized but i still wanted to shine some light on this mans legendary work!!! hope you all enjoy it regardless =]
Harry Mac & Daren Brown are a few goats 🐐 that come to mind. Carddini & Hodini but footage is hard to find.
Loved it
Oh wow.....Ricky Jay.....that guy was amazing! His small part in Boogie Nights was great as well. He is a legend. ❤ ✌😎 Good on you for shining a light on his brilliance!
@@Me_AV crap he was in boogie nights that's a good
Memory and attention to detail.
Did u got copyright from the channel handler of this video?!
I’m 30+ years in magic and he still blows my mind too Jason. Ricky Jay is hands down a GOAT 🐐

😉👍❤️
Thank you for this. Ricky was my friend since 1974. I spent many days with him as he practiced his craft. He was great with coins also. H

His cups and balls routine was also brutal. What a great magician.
Ricky Jay's magic wasn't just perfect, his patter was also perfect. Another master I like who's still around is Michael Vincent.
RIP Ricky Jay. I don't know if anyone else will be able to pull off that "I'm reading a textbook to you" patter like he could.
RIP
Watching that same Rick Jay special decades ago made me fall in love with magic. Thanks Ricky (and Jason)
It's such fun watching a magician commenting on magic as I watch.
I actually have this whole show recorded on a VHS tape from 1996 when it was on HBO. I absolutely became obsessed with him after seeing this. All you magicians are so talented. I know amongst yourselves you have your own "rankings" or whatever, but to me you're all equally great.
I was like #100, how satisfying.
Ricky was the best. I first met him 50 years ago, he was showing me how to juggle 5 balls at once. People may not know what a superb juggler he was.
I always loved his voice, and the way he speaks. His narration at the beginning of Magnolia is my favorite part of the movie.
Yes, I loved his narration in Magnolia!!
I loved they added Ricky Jay to the cast of Deadwood back in the day, as a Brothel Casino Manager. Even when he had no lines, it was a joy watching him do his flourishes and small slight of hand on the show.

Thank you for highlighting this genius. So ahead of his time.
The ease of his movements, lack of flash or flare, and his calm presentation turn an already beautiful art into a poetry of the hands. I happened upon "52 Assistants" whilst home sick from school one day and it has remained a favorite ever since.
That version of the cups n balls is amazing! But credit to you Jay! Your version when you repeat it with clear cups is up there too! 👏🏾
If you like the videos of Ricky Jay on RUclips, you’d love his performances on various television shows in the 70s and 80s. Sadly, most of those aren’t on RUclips. I really enjoy getting to see the magicians that inspire you.
You are still the GOAT to me!
Jason Maher. You are amazing, and this trick by Ricky is just a trip. Ricky was the master of patter.
Ricky Jay, i absolutely love his Ricky Jay and his 52 assistants.

The best part of Jay's McDonald's Aces is that his patter is taken nearly word for word from Erdnase (The Exclusive Coterie). Phenomenal post!

Just gotta say I've tried learning sleight of hand magic before and just had a hard time. Your enthusiasm has motivated me again.
I'd pay more money than I have to see Ricky Jay and Slydini on stage together riffing off each other.
His patter in the third version of the four queens trick is "The Exclusive Coterie" from The Expert at the Card Table, word for word.
Beautiful video , the amount of practice needed is incredible. my son liked this so much , thanks a lot .
Okay, Jason, I've now watched 3 of your videos which randomly popped up in my feed. I'm now convinced that subscribing is the right thing to do. Done. I don't want Ricky Jay to rest in peace.
I want him to have a fully booked show every night in Heaven.
I use to love watching him doing all his card tricks when I was little.
Don't put yourself down BABY !!! You are excellent and 99% of what you do, even on some slow mow settings have little idea how you do what you do !!!!! Keep it up, love your channel !!!!!

Ricky Jay is the GOAT. The man just knew magic.
Jason that trick was a freekin miracle. As Jeremy Tan would say...Whaaaat?
He was unreal… glad you’ve brought him to peoples attention 👍🏻
It’s funny that you think his patter is exhausting, but you have a very nice full patter that you practice yourself, and a style all your own.
A master of his field Ricky, Just like yourself, keep up the great work.
If I remember correctly, Ricky Jay was the first magician I ever saw throw playing cards. I remember seeing him throw cards into the flesh of a water melon, then turn it around and throw a card so that it stuck into the outside of the melon.
I grew up watching Ricky J. on tv. He was an amazing performer and some of his tricks honestly defy all logic and were probably actual magic. 😂
Also, this was his go-to main set. Ricky streamlined it over decades. We can see him perform parts of this special on Johnny Carson and with much more hair. His wording was polished and movements polished as well over the years. It was great to see his growth
Thanks! आप बहुत अद्भुत हो। 🙏🏼
Still here Jason…. loving you every day:) keep it up baby!,
I like your evaluations of other magicians.
I don't want to know how the tricks are done, just tell us about the things you appreciate.
My admiration for you just went up considerably me old son. I was fortunate to have gone to a Ricky Jay performance when I was younger. He was an OG in his time. I loved Ricky Jay on Deadwood!!

Thanks X-Files for introducing me to Ricky Jay! One of my favorite episodes!
Thanks for making this video mate. Always get some good value out of your content. Cheers!
I've watched 52 Assistants a couple of times. Ricky is enthralling.
If you're reviewing more YT clips, Tommy Wonder's Cups&Ball and Ambitious Card are high art.
Ricky Jay is still the master of cards, as far as I am concerned.
I love these videos where you review famous magicians, good work cheers
Totally badass legend.
He truelly is!
Thanks for the upload. I was entertained the whole time.
Jason, you are a Legend already. But Ricky is THE Legend of Legends!
Great commentary on one of my favorite magicians. If you want another thrill check out his video demonstrating poker with a number of celebrity friends including John C Reilly. Fantastic stuff.
He is the legend for sure.💯👍🍾👽
This was fascinating, thanks for sharing.
Awesome trick man! One of my faves
I cant stop watching this clip. Can u do a reaction to other Ricky jay tricks you think are some of the best. Thanks man.
I would like to see a Video from Dai Vernon Jason! ♥️🤗✌️ A GOAT, too
Not to disparage Ricky Jay and his skill, but I would much rather watch you perform Jason. You are just as tricky and your patter keeps me more mesmerized. Thank you for always being a world class entertainer.
I never knew who Ricky Jay was until I saw him on Deadwood. He was absolutely amazing.
I saw him in The Prestige, and then saw him in Boogie Nights and Magnolia.
Had no idea he was a magician!
And a James Bond baddie tooooo! (Tomorrow Never Dies)
Not only are you a great Magician and Showman your pretty dam good with your video editing also ✊✊✊✊👍, keep up the good work young man 😜👍👍✌️✌️✊✊
Even though you've shown how cups, and balls works it's still cool to watch. 😁
A wonderful legend, R.I.P. 🙏👍👍
Eighty One Bayyy Beeee
Damn Ricky Jay is the GOAT
One of the most beautiful routines I have ever seen
He was in The Ranger, The Cook and a Hole in the Sky.
Fantastic little movie.
It's a great idea to show the goats. Maybe Tamariz next? His "comodines" (jokers) routine is really nice.
My absolute favorite magician of all time
Wow! CRAZY Good!
Fire video🎉
Thanks man!!
Love Ricky Jay's magic. Wish I could have seen him in the 52 assistants tour. You should try Tommy Cooper, Johnny Ace Palmer, Tommy Wonder, Harry Anderson, Cellini, slydini, cardini......lol. I can keep going 😂
Love Ricky Jay in the X-Files!
Your shorts make me smile (:
Thanks man!! I'm happy to hear that
I couldn't pull it off, but I can tell when he's loading the cups. I couldn't SEE it, but I knew when it was happening. Thanks for sharing this!
At nearly 50 I'm just as enthusiastic at watching the real masters of magic
This is fabulous
Thank you!
