I was working in a golf shop in Atlanta back in the 90s. Payne and Frank Nobilo came into our shop for an autograph session. Believe it or not, not a lot of people showed up and instead of leaving, Payne stayed and talked to us for an hour. He was truly one of the coolest dudes you'd ever meet.
That's a great story, thanks for sharing. Shows you the class. You'll never forget this as long as you live.

Once he had kids I heard he changed a lot and then he was reinvigorated having God in his life
Dude was my favorite golfer when I was in my late teens/early twenties. After he passed, I never really had another favorite golfer. Sure, I liked Tiger, but he wasn’t Payne Stewart. As I’ve gotten older, and started reading up on him, I had no idea how stellar of a dude he was. There’ll never be another like him.

I was at the US Open on that Friday. We followed him for a bit that day. It was one of the better memories as a kid. ⛳️
This for me is right up there with the 1986 Masters. Payne Stewart at age 42 out dueling Tiger and Phil in their prime with unreal clutch putting will go down in history as one of the all time great performances in the history of Professional Golf. And the way he reacted when he won with the giant fist pump and the emotion of winning. To telling Phil how happy he was for him and his wife that they were gonna be parents. My god tears are flowing down my face. There will never be another Payne Stewart. He was a hall of famer on and off the course
Tim Jones maybe just before Tiger’s prime. Come 2000 he was almost unstoppable.
Agreed. Tiger used this to build as a few months later he’d out duel Sergio at the PGA Championship

I remember watching Payne win the '99 US Open. It is probably my favourite golfing moment ever. The second being Payne's concession to Monty at Brooklyn. This man had so much passion and charisma. I never met him , but I miss him. God bless you Payne Stewart.
OK, I'm watching this tearing up. First time seeing it since it originally happened so long ago, back when golf was new to me.
Hard to focus, through the huge tears that keep welling up in my eyes.
I was a huge Payne Stewart fan and in the late 80's I got to be a standard bearer for his group in the Isuzu Kapalua Open on the Celebrity Pro-Am day. Huey Lewis was the celebrity playing with him and it was amazing to watch the 2 of them play their harmonicas and goof off before teeing off. One of the funnest days ever.
It's 2021 and I still can't get over his tragic death.
I usually save my tears for the golf course. Incredible story with an unfortunate early ending.

There are always people out there who hate for the point of hating. Maybe they hate Payne Stewart because he had the misfortune of being a white, hetero male who worked very hard and was a devoted husband and father? Oh, and even worse... a CHRISTIAN! These days those are grounds for immediate hatred among the mainstream media and the liberal elite/intelligentsia/brainless followers of identity-politics dogma. I wish I was being sarcastic, but this is just the world we live in now.

This is the saddest thing I’ve ever seen
To make a 25 footer, then one from 7 and one from 15 on the last 3 holes to win a US Open...that's just epic. You could see Mickelson walking when he hit that last putt fully expecting him to miss and I'll guarantee that he was 100% expecting a playoff the next day. Phil looked shocked when he made it. That silky smooth swing and putting stroke. He was incredible.
Phil’s expression never changes, a wry grin knowing full well that an excellent player and friend he’s played with dozens of times is not about to miss a straight uphill putt to win another US open. Not a fan of Phil’s but this take makes no sense

I've always missed him as a golfer a character. Such a great loss so early..
Growing up with Payne and his family at the local club in Springfield was something else. He was a bit of a bully when we were young. He was 2 years older than me.
After he got famous, whenever I tan i to him? He was kind, gracious and acted like we were old friends. Even though we were never close. I miss him. My ex wife, who could care less about golf, cried when he won this as I had introduced them in the St Louis airport and he was really kind to her, ribbing her about marrying me.

Man, when they played those bagpipes on his memorial service i lost it i was only in my teens and it moved me big time.
Paine could be a real pain, before his freind got cancer and introduced him to Jesus....God bless his wonderful friends and family...they have a great legacy in Paine. When I was coaching golf for Monte Vista Chrisitian School in Watsonville, we took a trip to watch the Pebble Beach Pro-Am....two things happened there invovling Paine...I saw his fluid swing...which was magical...and so effortless...and one of my students on the golf team got Paine to sign his cap...Thanks for the memories!

Payne was a rare athlete who my perception completely changed on, who for years in terms of media exposure I thought he was cheesy, cocky and pompous. Then all of a sudden I thought he was the king of cool and the most grounded star athlete ever. Turns out I later found out he became a devout Christian. The change in him was stark and Im glad that happened.

Still my favourite US Open to this day. Payne's swing is in my top 5 of all-time favourite golf swings (#3). He is greatly missed, heaven had a very special place for Payne. RIP
I could not believe the news on oct 25th 1999 ,It made me very sad!
Payne Stewart was an amazing guy. I got to know his niece and he bought a house in Helensvale for her family and his wife's parents. I remember the day he died and i watched the plane in flight with his niece. It was a dreadful time for his family . She spent time looking after his kids in Florida . He took her golfing with Jordan and Clinton . A very special man with a great family .

My dad knew Payne, and I remember vividly my mom telling me after school in the first grade what had happened. He would’ve seen my dad the day or two after the crash. He’s a hero of mine, and I wish I could’ve gotten to know him.

I was going out with a wonderful lady at the time I was 29 but her Austrian family thought golf was an elitist sport and didn’t want to watch but I insisted on watching it outside of Boston at their home I was routing for Phill but was so respectful of Mr Stewart and was happy for him……I was truly sad when he passed as he was truly a great person…RIP good sir

He had a reputation as a practical joker who loved fun times but did anyone notice the deadly serious attitude he had on the course during this tournament? The man was on a mission. This tournament meant something. And he seemed like a man in his prime playing against players who were really good but not quite where he was yet. This was a well told story.

I was at the 2014 US Open at Pinehurst, and I remember someone saying the greens were like "putting off the hood of your car"

When you think of tournaments in golf history that are a wonderful intersection of both young and old, 3 tournaments immediately come to mind: 1960 US Open, 1986 Masters and the 1999 US Open. Truly crossroads tournaments and all with amazing finishes and players in contention.
