This has been an eye opener for me. I often accept a "good enough" because I'm too lazy to redo my work, and then I suffer for it. I will try to be more disciplined and fix my mistakes when I notice them. Great video!

That's how I feel. I was never alllowed to make mistakes, so I didn't really start learning anything worthwhile until I got into public school. After that, I get stuff wrong and I'd get taught the right way, before I would just berated for not knowimg how to do something.

Rapid prototype, test, correct, repeat. This is how I do most of my engineering work, unless it is a long turn time for the correct step, such as ordering a PCB board.
LOL! I wish I kept a diary of all the mistakes I made so I could quantify but I am sure you are wrong. Building Dotty alone was probably 10 mistakes a day for 20 years - I have a 146,000 mistake head start.
As an artist, everyone thinks I know how to do everything exactly. This is even more true depending on the medium. They should've seen me when I was making it. 😆
You are exactly right I was told a long time ago to show me a man that doesn't make mistakes and I will show you a man that doesn't do anything however I think I got you beat on screwing up and isn't it always funny after you finish a project you learn these shortcuts to make it easier to do for the next time
that happens ALL the time. You struggle and struggle spending hours and hours ... then afterward find a shortcut that allows it to be done in minutes. The thing is, THEN you remember the shortcut. Otherwise you would probably forget it. Its why in wood shop class they make you do a mortise with a chisel before showing you an easier way :)
Some people think idols or role models cant screw up at all, they keep forgetting everyone is human and for so they will screw up, its a matter of what next or how do i get better where role models or idols excel.

I always told myself that learning by mistakes happens only if you recognize the mistake you've made, and be willing to change your behaviour in the present to improve in the future. Making mistakes doesn't help per Se. And one more thing, I am sure that most people DO NOT learn from mistakes, in fact most people simply pay a high price for the mistake they will tell themselves that they will learn and in the end commit the same mistake again and again.

Precisely. Mathematical models and theory only gets you so far. You have to build it, watch it explode, then figure out what went wrong so you can correct it.
Great video, very encouraging to people that just need encouragement to start. Engineers probably need less encouragement, but the less technical part of the audience should heed this advice. Hey, I built my own water-water heat pump, surprisingly it actually works. Needless to say I learned a lot, but most of the new stuff was brazing copper and getting a different perspective to making tech equipment.

As an engineer that constantly learns new things, I think it is very important to learn how to learn. That includes learning how to search for the knowledge you are looking for. We are living in the "age of information" but it is useless if you cannot find it. You also need to know how to extract knowledge, whether it is from a book, a website or a video. Just reading or watching isnt enough, you got to be able to keep good notes that you can refer to. You got to take the information in and understand it. You got to work out some examples and do some planning. But most importantly you got to put the information in practice. And dont wait until you got the perfect setup or the perfect tools. Sometimes what you need to do is just start. You will be surprised what you can do with what you already have (or with some basic tools) and you wont find that out from the people that already have the experience or every tool available.
Precisely!!!! I was going to pin something similar as a comment. You have to read books but at some point, you have to stop and DO something. So many suffer from analysis paralysis, even in fitness. People study and study and refuse to start working out until they research the "best" workout - guess what, they never end up working out.
I recently bought those books you recommended plus a few more. I think it would be fun to build a few houses and rent them out like you do. Did you ever get additional help with some tasks during construction?

My wife recently broke the bathroom door and I messed up the new door trying to cut it to size. How did I make a mistake? I assumed the knob hole was in a certain position and it wasn't. Then the door didn't line up properly. So I had to buy a new door and do it again. Such a silly mistake because carpentry takes a lot of knowledge regarding measurements and how things go together.
You could have watched 200 hours of DIY videos about door installation and you would have never learned that lesson. Consider what you did a really efficient way of learning!!!!
FIXING the mistakes is where the learning happens. Just making them doesnt help.
I see this a lot: "I'm bad at X because I failed when I tried to do it once." Persistence is key.

Wow! 2x6 interior walls! Could've done wider custom jambs vs the alcove, but it looks very palm-deserty that way ;)
Actually wider than that, it was 8" from wallboard to wallboard. Dont ask me how that adds up, I just made it work.
