  • A quarter-century ago, the highest-ranking Soviet bloc intelligence official ever to defect to the West, Lt. Gen. Ion Mihai Pacepa, exposed the massive crimes and corruption of his former boss, Romanian President Nicolae Ceauescu. His act drove assassination squads to the U.S. to find this former spy chief and kill him. They failed.
Join author and historian Ronald Rychlak (Pacepa now lives under a protective identity and does not make public appearances) as he reveals some of the most consequential yet largely unknown disinformation campaigns of our lifetime.

no offense! have you read, Red Horizons? to understand what Pacepa did. I recommend that book to you ... he affected the entire Romanian system and I am not talking only about espionage, but an entire ensemble. In Romania, investments were made on various branches, and he released all these investments ... to make progress since he has decriminalized everything ... the communist system cannot appreciate it as a positive or negative factor ... in each political system there are gaps (positive and negative) ... and I do not want to make a political discussion ... I will ask you something more, if you want to answer! but first I want to know if you are Romanian? ... what is the difference between Mihai Pacepa and Ion Antonescu?

The Russians/Soviets are widely acknowledge to be very skilled at disinformation, but this talk will give you no insight into this.
This is a very bad talk at two levels. First, the presentation rambles. Second, he destroys his credibility.
For example, he characterizes basic PR - such as a picture of Putin with a puppy - as "disinformation".
For example, he throws up a slide on "Potemkin Villages" with only a faulty understanding of the origins -- too lazy to do a quick lookup in Wikipedia.
For example, when he lays out all the connections of the Soviets to the play "The Deputy", he includes I.F. Stone as a Soviet agent, apparently unaware of how thin and questionable the evidence is. Stone's role: He praised the play. In the context of how much of the world had turned a blind eye to the Holocaust, isn't it more likely that Stone--being Jewish--identified with the claim that the Catholic Church did too little (recognize that the Catholic political parties in German helped the rise of the Nazis).
For example, he cites US politicians blaming their predecessors for problems as signs of Russian successes. Similarly for "attacks on religion" (not identified) as necessary precursors to install a murderous regime.
With a bunch of other instances where the presenter seemed too credulous, I started picturing him with an aluminum-foil cap.
The Spy Museum should have been embarrassed by this talk and if they decided they had to publish it, at least warn people that this was nonsense.

The speaker uses exactly the same technique that he describes in his talk - sending subtle messages, equating the then US government with behaviour of Soviet leaders. Coming from someone who is an invited speaker in TheSpyMuseum should make it sound credible.
Then right after his subtle messages from the last slide comes the question regarding RadioFreeEurope - discrediting this institution in one go.
The whole rumble of a presentation seemed to be just a foreplay for these two subtle final messages.
