- This guide is for ANIME WATCHERS ONLY! I won't include much about the games or visual novels in this video.
So, you wanna get into the Fate franchise? The fandom overcomplicated Fate/Stay Night for years on end to the point where I never considered getting into the series, however around last year I finally decided to start giving the shows a watch. To my surprise, it wasn't anywhere near as complex as people made it out to be. So, today I will be sharing with the correct and best way to watch the Fate series.
This video was mostly made to get new fans into the series, like my Higurashi audience. That way you guys can watch the massive amount of Fate videos I plan to make, since I want you all to be included.

A lot of you might be confused how to watch Fate, but its not that complicated. Gigguk struggled at trying to understand the fate series, despite Gigguk explaining how he would watch it in the Trash Taste Podcast. Gigguk also touches this slightly in Explain the ENTIRE fate Series and Regret Life. CDawgVA really liked Fate/Zero, but TheAnimeMan couldn't manage to get into the fate series at all because he needed a fate guide.
Kenken seems to be the master at understanding Type-Moon properties, and Kenken makes really good figure unboxings of characters like Saber, Emiya Shirou, Rin Tohsaka, and Sakura Matou. Astolfo and Mordred are really great characters too. How to Watch The Fate Series can be a complicating thing, but I promise its not that hard to understand with this guide to the fate series.
It might not be as well known as Attack on Titan because Attack on Titan is legendary, but it is made by the same studio as Demon Slayer which is Ufotable. Honestly, it looks even better than Demon Slayer's animation does. I promise it can stand up to the likes of Jujutsu Kaizen from MAPPA as well. It is as lengthy as something like Bakemongatari and the Monogatari Series, and seems like it could connect like Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, but I promise it isn't that complicated. - Кино

Ufotable really needs to animate the fate route
I swear
I would say that translating the VN is a higher priority
I agreed.
Saber x Shirou ❤
Too bad they’ll never do it, since they combined 2 routes into ubw. Most of it would be redundant
@@mjbrowniiwhat did they do? i know the deen adaptation is shit but i always thought ufotables ubw was good?
So I accidentally uploaded this, and I'm just gonna leave it up.

I started with unlimited bladeworks(then like a dumb dumb) then i quit and moved to fate zero which was great to me xD

I watched zero first, but I didn’t feel all that confused. I swear they explained enough of what was happening for me to understand what the point of everything was. I guess I just have superhuman analytical abilities😅
Kudos to you man. A lot of people get really confused (myself included, I went through halfway into episode 1 of Zero and then swapped to UBW)
@@MrHunteru It isnt that it is confusing. The issue is that Zero tries to explain the basics AND all the characters background and motives in ep1.Ep1 is just a 45 minute info dump.
UBW tries to do explain the basics and two(3 with Kirei?)characters in 5 episodes, 2 of them being 45 minutes.
There is a lot of eye candy and character bander between the exposition.
So it isnt that people are confused but they just shut off their brain since it feels like a sudden study.
same i watched Zero first then UBW and HF :p and of courde all the other ones after it 😂
yeah I watched zero first too and it was amazing and they explain enough for me to want to see how the children head off afterwards. I swear if u can't wrap your head around it then you aren't an anime watcher in my opinion.
@@marshalgaming21 no. Series first, movie is made by another company
Thanks so much for such a clear outline. I watched some other videos and was more confused than before I watched them.

And here I was watching the aniplex Madoka, fate stream. Perfect timing. Been meaning to watch fate sometime so thanks for the vid! Keep up the phenomenal work!
Of course! I'm glad I can help
BEST video I’ve found I actually can’t believe how long it took to find a starting point for this series
Yes! A Fate video from my favourite youtuber!
Great guide for newcomers 👍. The source material of the Fate franchise started with the visual novel Fate/stay night(3 routes)(written by kinoko Nasu) released in 2004. Then the light novel of Fate/Zero(written by Gen Urobochi) released in 2006. Fate/stay night(3 routes) has a lot of mystery and revelations that get spoil by Fate/Zero. Its not that starting with Fate/Zero is confusing. Its a prequel that is meant to be watch after Fate/stay night(3 routes).
I tried watching Zero a few years back after reading my mind into exhaustion about watch-order. Didn't enjoy myself. I might try getting into the Fate series after watching this video! Thanks.
Of course! Happy to help
Literally today I was looking into how to watch this lmao
Huge ups to u, thank you🙏🏻

Oh wow a video so i can finally start binging all the fate series in order!
I watched all the fate series and man o man I really really enjoyed watching all the series this is one of the best anime I've ever watched.
How do I watch them in order
@@Carti_the_goat0 pretty much late to answer , but fsn and zero is most improtant, but more than that, don't forget to check on kara no kyoukai tsukihime and witch on holy night they are as important as fsn
I watched fate zero and loved it. Only fate I’ve ever watched tho.
Heavens Feel I'd say is the same level as Zero, the others vary in quality
@@MrHunteru i'd put heaven's feel above fate zero
@@redeye8743 not with that adaptation that skips alot
@@mohamedelhediissa289 different people have different opinions, there are tons of people that loved the movies, heck I played the vn and liked the movies more than the source materials
@@mohamedelhediissa289 they really skip some stuff and Illya gets pretty much sidelined, but the only thing they really did badly was expressing Shirou's state of mind after the cloth release. Everything else, if it's skipped they substitute it with a decent new scene shorter but that delivers the same objective.
perfect watch order, couldn’t agree more
Nice! The ending of fate zero explained why it should be watched after UBW. I wish there was more fate to watch tho
It's a massive, expansive franchise. There's a lot to watch. What ones have you already seen?
One point:
If you happen to be a newcomer to anime in general, like I was some years ago, the studio deen's stay night does not look so bad, because you don't already know how mutch better the ufotable's quality is. And without the video novel, you also don't know what is different in the show. ;-)
Also, Saber is best girl.
After stay night, I watched the cooking show and then the rest. :-D
But ufotable, please remake the fate route!!!
Lmao, what perfect timing. I just started watching fate zero yesterday (which also happens to be the one I started with)
I started with zero and I really enjoyed it. But your points are understandable.
I started with Fate Zero not knowing anything about this stuff and forgot about that show. Now that I stumbled across this video I can re watch it all properly so thank you!!
oh i needed this
Just what I needed
I gotchu
That higurashi comparison is very accurate.
I mean I started with Zero and then went to Heavens feel and I love the Fate franchise
Yeah, but Heavens Feel has a lot of discovery plot in it that just get lost if you watch Zero first. It's like watching a mystery movie already knowing the culprit.
Wait I thought it went zero then fate/stay night
This is the objectively correct order (except for reading the VN first)
banger as usual
Thank you my homie jelly :D
Put Sotsu first ark video pls. Your Higurashi Contents are the best!
When I watched Fate for the first time, I went in release order, starting with Zero and ending with Heaven’s Feel. While I understand that Zero can be confusing for people who haven’t watched any other fate series, I still loved every second of it. Plus, it had me hyped up for whenever I saw characters from Zero make a return like Gilgamesh and Kotomine
That's completely fair. I just wanna try and give people the best experience I can and this is the way that seems to work the best for most
Technically if we go for release order zero would be watched last because the light novel released after stay night.
While that is completely true I believe they're referring to Anime release order
Here is the right "right" order to watch the Fate series:
ANY WAY I DAMN WELL PLEASE!
I mean facts tbh
lol cool, then why'd you click on the video 5head
Hm, interesting, you did pretty good with this one.
You're missing oath under snow, imo a must watch.
He mentioned the Prillya movies.
I think the best way to watch Fate is watch through the release time of each route
I haven't watched anything fate related and now i have decided to start off with unlimited blade works season 1 but their is a prologue episode called episode 0 . Should I watch it and then watch season 1 episodes or skip it ?? Please answer
Yeah you can. It helps give some background for the first season, I would recommend it
Thank you for this!I was deciding for 2 weeks on which to start with and had watch the first 2 episodes of Fate stay night and wqs bored by it.
No problem! I'm glad I could help
I started with Fate/Zero and still enjoyed the others
So I've been doing a custom anime block every Saturday since quarantine and I added UBW to it a while ago, I just finished UBW last week and just watched the first episode of Zero today, I feel kind of mixed on UBW because it does feel like Saber and Sakura get sidelined, which I don't mind too much because it's Rin's route but Saber's the Pikachu of the series and it just feels weird that she's barely in it. Some of Shirou's weird navelgazing got on my nerves too and I hate how it kept kneecapping later fights by having one or both combatants basically be half dead before the fight started. That said I can't stop shitposting about the characters so I clearly had some fun and after watching the beginning of Zero I have a feeling this is going to be more my speed and I'm glad we're just jumping right into developing all these characters since it felt like UBW was kind of scrambling to try and fit in screentime of some of the pairs. I'd love to try Heaven's Feel but sadly it doesn't appear to be on any Streaming service so I'll just stick with Zero for now and maybe Apocrypha and Grand Order when I get around to it.
Also looking forward to the Higurashi video, I'm loving Gou/Sotsu and am a big fan of the original!
Yeah, right now Heaven's Feel is like only on gogoanime and 9anime and such. Its really good. UBW is pretty alright but it has a lot of issues with its story, Zero is amazing tho. I think you'll really like zero
This entire debate would had been solved by now if there was a Proper Fate Route Adaptation
time to start Fate 💯
In my opinion the perfect way to watch Fate/Stay Night is laying on a couch with two full packets of doritos and a bottle of coke. And keep away anything fragile out of your arm's reach cause Shirou's extreme idealism may get on your nerves.
Be less white training played off I see
Only if you're a Pleb. His sword autism is the reason stay night is good.
great video, I just disagree with the part of not being able to understand the grand order anime without playing the games, even if not all the singularities were adapted the ones that were are pretty stand-alone and explained everything you need to know to get the show, I say that because I watched the animes for grand order and was never confused (even never having played the games) and because I saw a lot of anime-onlys watching grand order when it was airing and I never saw them being confused
Although got to admit, Deen Stay Night has best OST
Very true
Currently watching fate for the first time. Started with Zero... I'm on episode 19 or so and I'm absolutely loving it.
And there's nothing wrong with that, Zero is an awesome show. My goal is simply to tell people what to watch so it doesn't seem intimidating, since a lot of Fate fans will scare new viewers away with watch orders
and spoilled everything
@@blackchase6732what do u mean.
Does zero spoils ubw?
@@se7en845 zero spoils every single route
fsn ubw hf
and completlly contradicts them both events and characters personalities and events of the 4th war
Also in terms of adaptations, Zero was created first and there's references and callbacks in UBW that you wouldn't understand if you hadn't seen Zero prior.
I'm an anime-only guy and I knew I'd want to start with the visual novels before even bothering with the anime. And you said to skip the 2006 series (which isn't even on Crunchyroll anyway) and just watch UBW. OK, I think I will.
Yoo found ur channel just now i will subscribe
HELL YEAAAHH, welcome to the squad
I understand it says "watch" in the title but all of this would be so much easier if people decided to read the visual novel, though unfortunately it's not easily accessible (not really if you're willing to spend around an hour of downloading and installing some files, but y'know...) and I understand not wanting to read for over 50 hours when you have cool animated visuals available. I really hope F/SN gets a remake because that's the only way we'll get an official localization that can be downloaded without much hurdles by a modern audience.
45 min episodes, the more the merrier if it's worth, lettssss goooooooo
Have you watched the KnK series too? Ufotable animated it as well and it’s so freaking pretty
I've been meaning to. Is it good?
@@MrHunteru I personally think so, though just as the Fate series, there are some really messed up scenes and themes brought up. The quality of the work considering the budget is incredible. I think they have it on Crunchyroll in case you find yourself with free time :)
Fate stay night 2006 first. Studio Deen adaptation is great and doesn't deserve the hate it gets. Kenji Kawai's soundtrack is one of the best of all time.
Agreed! The F#@&ing UBW and ShirouXRin Tohsaka shipper Purist need to stop pissing and Shitting on the first Fate/stay night anime and the Fate route in general.
Im happy im 1 of the 5 who enjoyed zero as a starter
i dont understand the deen/stay night argument of it spoiling things. I watched Deen/stay night after UBW and enjoyed it, i saw what the spoilers were for UBW but they werent super obvious, it kinda hinted at the UBW route/events. For someone who has never watched fate, deen's fate route might be good cuz it sets up the ufotable routes plus the watcher will be very excited to see the UBW from that 2000s animation to the UFOtable animation
Me who watched Zero first and absolutely adored it...
It is a fire show
Bro, where do you watch the anime fate/stay night from?
Whatever route of Fate, Saber is the best waifu ever ❤
Watching Order :-
1) Fate Stay Night
2) Fate: Zero
3) Fate Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Work (Ignore the Movie, that's a spoiler. There are two season in Unlimited blade work,Watch both of them)
4) Fate Stay Night: Heaven's Feel Movie 1,2,3
"you dropped your crown king 👑"
Fate heavens feel has (in my opinion) the best ost In the whole franchise and zero is close to second
Fate extra is in a completely different time line with different laws
Also there was a fate grand order movie adaptation of its prologue story
Also, it's almost illegal how you used so many SG images in this picture and only have one video for the series! Also have you tried to get into its universe? The Chaos; series are insane (VN of course, stay away from the animes).
I bought Chaos;Child recently, and I've been meaning to dive into all of the SciAdv series. I've wanted to do more on Steins;Gate, but I think that a lot of what can be done for the series has already been done on RUclips
@@MrHunteru I promise you will fall in love with Chaos;Child. Even more importantly, the Chaos series haven't been thaaat explored/analised in youtube in my opinion. I'm always happy to see more people getting into it.

I watched zero before heavens feel and it honestly just made heavens feel that much better and sadder. Just knowing....:(
But I did start with ubw
you mean ruined it with spoilers and contradiction and what it got at the end was getting kicked out of the canon
As the fate fandom says: Don't worry about it
In all honesty it doesn’t really matter just watch whatever seems interesting to you.
tbh yeah
Just watched the title of this video and I'm commenting this without watching but I'll only watch this if Gigguk has approved this video.
Gigguk's video came out of left field and completely ruined a lot of my future Fate video plans lol
Bruh.. I just started and I watched the 2006 Fate Stay/Night first.🙂
I just watched ubw and its amazing
I felt it's better than demons slayer 1
Now i am watching heaven's feel
It is FAAAR better! I'm glad you're coming around to the fate series
@@MrHunteru yeah
Thanks mann!!!!!!
God bless you to recomend the newcomer to UBW first. Respect
I watched Zero, then Stay Night. It's hard to go from the dynamic and flashy Zero to the regular anime pace of Stay Night. I mean they had those typical chill let's-show-the-audience-a-Japanese-meal type of scene. It's weird to watch that after Zero.
They're fundamentally different works and zero(despite being a prequel which written later than the original FSN) was adapted by ufotable earlier, and done better. To be succinct, the ufotable FSN adaptations just feel toothless and way too safe; the VN on the other hand is really good, it's a chunni, somber, urban fantasy work that can wander into horror territory at some points, and I don't know why the anime had to turn it into this action packed shonen show which skewed public perception of fate for all time in the western side of things.
Start on Carnival Phantasm
So you choose chaos
Am I the only person who likes the deen adaptation and started with it
Fate route enjoyer here, I personally don't understand the hate. It was the first one I watched when getting into Fate and I have never regretted it. It doesn't make sense to me to completely outcast it like its trash tbh.
Me too, even rewatch it like 4 times already. The animation might look horrible but I think we should appreciate the quality of the OST that makes the series alive
I watched Fate UBW, I liked it but felt unsatisfied not knowing what happened with Sakura but I dont feel like watch 3 movies...probably will watch in a couple years
The movies are all really good, and under around an hour and 30 mins long. Waiting a few years tho whaaaa
Watch it now! You won't regret it
I'm already at episode 8 of fate route. Should i just dump it and go ubw like in the video
It’s your call really. If you’re enjoying the Fate route then I’d say stick to it
@@MrHunteruthank you
Not sure but I think the timestamps are wrong in the description
And I'm looking forward to watch fate series as per your order
Yeah I have no clue why the timestamps just won't work on this video, they're exactly the same as my other ones
@@MrHunteru They are working now 😂
13:00 i gotta disagree on this one, no, you are right, they are unnecacery to watch, but almost all of nasuverse is like this, you don't need to watch fate stay night to understand fgo or Apocrypha, or tsukihime, or kara no kyoukai or ... , you watch them , because they are cool(most of them anyway), so that's it, if you enjoyed fate stay night, you definitely can tries other part of nasuverse, and it doesn't need to limit ourselves
You should definitely start with the 2006 Deen version, there is so much you will miss if you don't watch the Fate route which is the main route anyway. The order after that should be Fate/Zero, UBW (UFOtable version), Heaven's Fell movies in order 1 2 3. If you still want more Fate UBW Deen's movies does have some stuff that it does better than the series so watch that.
As for spin offs, Prisma Illya is really good, so watch Prisma Illya, than 2wei, 2wei Herz!, 3rei and the two movies (oath under snow and licth nameless girl). Fate Apocrypha has the best fight in the entire franchise, and Today's menu for the Emiya Family is a really wholesome iyashikei.
Fate heaven's feel is best ❤
Shirou and sakura forever ❤❤❤🙂
Whoops, I watched (the Deen series) Stay Night then Fate/Zero. Shucks, didn't think Zero would spoil Heaven's Feel.
Fate/Zero is goated but I HATED Stay Night. Unlimited Bladeworks has a lot to prove to get me to like Shirou and care about that story!
I started with zero first and then kept watching from there
1. Stay/Night
2. Heaven's feel
3. Zero
4. Today's Menu
5. Apocrypha
6. Fate Extra
7. Case Files
8. Grand Order
I don't know if I'd be satisfied ending with Zero. Ending on the note that it did I'd probably feel the need to watch one of the other series over again. I did do a watch of UBW>Zero>Heaven's Feel where UBW set the ideal, Zero recontextualized the ideal, and HF ended it, but I might only be okay with that since I'd already seen it all.
I ended with Zero and personally, it had me bawling my eyes out lmao. It left me with a massive appreciation for the rest of the series and everyone's efforts, and I like how it connected. It seems a lot of my friends thought similarly
Okay, i got that but when do i watch Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia?
Realistically you can watch it whenever I think, just keep in mind the grand order stuff is based off the game and it takes place way far into the story
first i should watch Unlimited Blade Works 2010 or Unlimited Blade work 2014 yes or no
I am still of the mind that they should remaster the original visual novel. I mean they don't have to change the story at all just give it better visuals. I mean I tried to plan for the first time but the old animation just was too bad for me
I watched ubw then FGO Babylonia and then heavens feel. I think if you get interested order really does not matter. just remember to watch sub not dub.
I am trusting you with this😅
Hey! I started with the dean anime. I liked it...
There's nothing wrong with that! Most people tend to hate it though
Sorry I'm a little defensive I know the animation kind of sucks but their versions of higurashi and fate introduced me to these things that I never would have seen otherwise.
So what the fuck is with the Melty Blood Series? Like how do they tie in?
That's apart of the bigger Nasuverse, which is a giant clusterfuck, but it has nothing to do with your enjoyment of the Fate series. You can go down that line if you absolutely are obsessed with the series because otherwise that kind of commitment is just not worth it imo
So is the original 2006 on Crunchyroll???
Where can I find the original?
Last I heard, the original was available on Netflix
@@MrHunteru I tried finding it on there but couldn't do I eventually found it online.
At this point I just watch these to know other people's takes lol
Edit: and this one is the best take
I watched the deen fate first and then watched zero being confused as hell, then when I watch ubw and heaven's feel i wasn't really hooked in the story....maybe because the deen series kinda spoiled.
Hopefully no one makes this mistake 😐
It's jsut really depends on the individual. I started with the DEEN anime, because THERE WASN'T ANY OTHER anime of fate besides the Deen's version. But I'm proactive, and started reading the Visual Novels.
Like people shit on the Deen anime too much, when the DEEN anime made the earlier boom to begin with.
So, it's not a mistake to start with DEEN's anime, is how you follow it up what matters.
The idea that starting with Zero is preferable only gained traction because the HF movies hadn't been released yet, so anime watchers couldn't know what they were missing. HF2 in particular has some shocking revelations about Sakura and Illya that are, indeed, spoiled by Zero ep. 1 (a prequel in the source material). If you start with Zero, not only you'll not feel the shock, but you'll not even notice that this is new information that was supposed to shock you.
Once the theory that it's better to start with Zero took hold, it perpetuated itself even after the release of HF2, precisely because the people who followed that watch order never realized they were missing so much from the HF experience. Many retort that the other watch order spoils the ending of Zero, which is true... but that isn't a big deal, since Zero's ending was never meant to be a surprise in the first place. Moreover, UBW and HF don't get into much detail about what happened in previous Holy Grail war, so they may give you a broad (and even wrong) idea of what happens in Zero, with the details still a surprise.
Starting with Zero is like watching the Star Wars prequels first and never realizing that Vader saying "No, I am your father" was a shocking revelation. Is avoiding the spoiler of Anakin's arch during the prequels worth that loss?
its the most idiotic thing youll just spoil everything
