Better to make mistakes trying to think it through rather than speed run everything and learn nothing. Of course, judging by Slay the Spire antics, he might not learn either way.
Watching NL try to figure out the basics of strategy is like watching a toddler try to figure out why the square block’s not going through the round hole. I love the guy to death but watching this makes me wonder how many months it took him to grasp the mechanics of rock, paper, scissors.
Watching NL play this game is like watching baby's first steps... except the baby is talking shit the whole time like "I'm the best walker you've ever seen! Galaxy-brain walking baby" *SPLAT*
Tell me about it, I can deal with the misplays but when he starts caling himself a genius and says he is being smart (as he kills his own units and buildings) I... just... can't...
Three things that helped me a ton when I started playing this game, maybe they'll help you too: 1. The closer your units are to the absolute center of the map the better, as you can utilize the maximum movement for each unit. It generally works for me to just deploy my units as close to the middle as I can. 2. Unless a pilot or effect allows you to, your units can't move through geography or other units, which can restrict their movement. Be aware of this when a unit appears to be able to move nowhere, as something is probably blocking their path, possibly one of your own units. 3. Most of the time, if an enemy attacks your mech directly, it means they aren't a threat to buildings or your objectives. Watch out for these attacks, because you can solve them by just moving out of the way without investing any more of your actions on that enemy. Make sure you know exactly what attacks are going to threaten your objectives or buildings directly, and don't worry too much about the others. Sorry for the wordy comment, just trynna help out my local egg.
A list of words the Egg is no longer allowed to say: Smart, Genius. Brilliant, Thought (or any synonyms of it such as thinking), Strategy (and synonyms), or anything that implies he is good at this.
From the "goodbye hornets" that had me in tears, to him blowing his own tank into oblivion... Absolute genius to what the actual fuck in less than 60 seconds. The way the human brain works.. Or doesn't is truly fascinating... Ryan being the prime example.
So you have to learn (specially on harder missions) to look closely on the map before accepting the mission as is. You see the first wave as well as the layout and you should never take a mission like that with close to starter gear (unless your comp is suited).
I was predicting the tank going into the chasm for 5 mins while you thought about it out loud :P Was pretty funny seeing him get dumped in. Thank god for reset turn lol...its a bit forgiving IMO.
NL please realize that you messed up last videos number as well as this one! By god it's going to be an entire series of videos with incorrect video numbers
Biggest problem is that the enemies he blocks don't go anywhere, meaning if he blocks 2 of 3 spawns this turn, he has to deal with five spawns on the next one - 3 new and 2 previously blocked. Actually killing stuff is way more productive.
Ergo maybe it's on purpose because he accidentally killed that one run off-camera, so that episode was skipped? Seems a bit silly to purposely offset an entire series because of one mistake though..
You know what I noticed with any big youtuber playing Into the Breach? It is WAY better to just put it on in the background while you play something else as a talk show. Because, when you hear them talk, they sound like they have a better handle and fuckups ain't their fault. But when you watch... *facepalm*
Got a real smart move going on, This is going to make me look like a genius. Okay now we are thinking Strategically. Oh we are not thinking strategically, AND ALREADY USED THE TURN RESET.
Blocking enemy spawns is not something NL should do, tbh. It screws him over so hard, because it's the only thing he's focused on and doesn't think about enemy pacing. If he'd just focus on killing stuff that's on the field, it would go so much better for him.
"so what did we learn last time? Definately we need to spread out, now watch me not spread my units out because we dont need to" Well whatever you say!
Challenge mission Victory in 4 turns If you're gonna consign yourself to losing a solar panel the correct order of moves is: 1. Artillery in the middle of the 3 2. Tank shot crab back into place 3. Punch crab to death Saves your punch mech 1 HP and kills a unit (while still blocking a spawn)
Could have avoided all damage in the first turn. 1. Tank shot Alpha Hornet in front of Regular Firefly 2. Punch Alpha Firefly between AH and RF -> AF kills AH and RF damages AF 3. Artillery hits crab on dune -> Smoke -> no attack The order of enemies acting is very important.
Woulda been even better if he had already used his reset when he pushed his tank into the ravine. You make it really easy to hate your strategies NL, because you try to justify it for so long by the time you actually take a move you've already forgotten important shit. That's why you failed Long War. You over-analyze and don't commit to good plans
It seems this game is doing NL's head in. The plays, the episode numbering... This might lead to a medykal emergency if he carries on like this. "Oi nurse we got ourselves a bad case of bloaty head here!"
Okay, a few things. First the good news. You are improving. Especially on the first few maps here, you were doing better. Later on, that progress reversed itself a bit. I'd urge you, before doing anything else, familiarize yourself with the game's feedback. It tells you EVERYTHING you need to know. Hover the cursor over your mech, and it tells you what qualities it has and what they mean. Read them all. Hover it over units on the map, and it shows you the arcs of attacks, the targets of attacks, the damage of attacks, and how things are going to move as a consequence of attacks. It's really well done. After that, work on assembling that wealth of information into causal chains. You were doing this earlier on. If you move this here, it fires there, which damages this...etc etc. Work out all the permutations. It takes time. Give yourself that time. What you still need to work on, I think, is learning to then take that causal chain and extend it out beyond the turn you're on. If you move most of your mechs way over here, will they be in position next turn to protect buildings? If you focus more on blocking enemies now than getting objectives, can you upgrade your mechs enough to keep up with escalating difficulty? Again, it takes time. More than just time though, it requires a certain methodical mindset. Trying to fly by the seat of pants through it may work from time to time, but mostly it will just lead to a death spiral. Keep at it!
I only play Xcom and one other strategy game and I'm having a blast. It doesn't take long to learn, the UI is very helpful. And you can always play on easy if you're struggling
This game has way more in common with chess than a classic RTS or TBS (real time strategy/turn based strategy). And yes, I do realize chess is a strategy game too :) I'd personally recommend the game as it is very addictive and can be played in short bits Its got nice art and is also hugely replayable. However, I should also advise that it can be very frustrating at times.
I just bought this game yesterday, and I thought that I would do better than NL's first few videos. Nope. I make the same mistakes that he does. Feels bad. At least I've won once, and came very close three other times. Oh well.
I'd argue that's the opposite of his problem. He just needs to think methodically. It seems like he very quickly enters a kind of loop where the first 2 or 3 things he thinks of become the only things he thinks of...no matter how long he thinks.
I see improvement, and that's all one can ask for. I don't know why you keep so many cat interruptions in the video, and I don't get the feeling that you enjoy what you're doing, but hey…
Yeah, I'm pretty sure, like everyone else it's people coming and going. They're just doing it at roughly the same rate nowadays. Those 700k certainly aren't watching, so the sub numbers aren't particularly relevant either way.
Malfish yea, however it wouldn't hurt to gain some "temporary viewers". NL is probably one of the most...invested channels, it's not inviting at all because you'll probably jump in at episode 278 or whatever.
Hey Malfish, when you say "most RUclipsrs", do you mean other Let's Players or everyone? I'm not so sure about inconsistent audiences, though. There are plenty of channels with very loyal watchers. LP channels, by nature, tend to have loyal audiences, especially if the games all fall into similar genres.
Christian Lund not really, a lot of gaming channels with 5 million subs might only get 200,000 viewers a vid. The most views per sub are probably very quality over quantity with FAN bases, like days and Phil.
When I replied before I tried to go looking for gamers with millions of subs but didn't really know where to look. I know about Pewdiepie, Markiplier, and Jacksepticeye, but they have become hybrid channels. I could only compare with quill18, who has 495k subscribers (compared to NL's 777k), and 5.2M views for the past 30 days (compared with NL at 9.9M for the same period). So it seems that NL does indeed have a loyal viewer base, as would anyone else who puts up plenty of fresh (and importantly consistent) content. If we look outside LP channels, I'd say that anyone who regularly (and somewhat frequently, depending on the type of content) posts videos has a loyal audience. E.g. ASMR, daily vlogs, mukbang/storytime, commentary. Can you recommend any gamers with subs in the millions that I can look at? They don't necessarily have to be good. ;)
His inability to plan and lack of creativity point to the fact that he probably wasn't. Just being on the team doesn't mean you're any good. We had guys just like him on the team in highschool. Usually it was just to look good on college apps, most people were terrible. I'm pretty sure NL's in the "terrible" category. There's a reason he's never streamed or posted a single game in years... He doesn't wanna look the fool.
Your playstyle straight up fills me with rage because you play so goddamn slow and still make a lot of mistakes. Maybe swap this slow playstyle with slay the spire and see how that works out
man...i thought you were bad at Slay the Spire... look at 10:00 - dude...move the tank to the top right, block a spawn...move the mech behind the bug and punch him down and block another spawn. 3 spawns blocked and damage done and one enemy killed, instead of 2 spawns blocked, an unnecessary move and wasted turns pay more attention to your moves dummy
Does anyone think this game is less punishing and is less RNG dependent than FTL? I won 2 runs in a row in this game and it took me 20+ runs to my first win in FTL.
The reset turn button is the true hero of this series.
This man needs Isaac Jones.
Who else saw the tank next to the chasm and knew that it was a 100% guarantee he was going to blow his tank away?
His tank... went into... the breach!
I was waiting expectantly, and he did not disappoint.
I kept thinking it was a fakeout, that he'd move it at the last second. Even though my heart knew the truth.
"They'll pay for this!"
And then he says “beee honest” as if we hadn’t seen it coming for several minutes. 🍳🍳
The longer NL takes thinking on a turn the higher the chances of him screwing up.
Pretty much
Vund Smith I really need to watch this series it seems. = )
That's because the more time he spends the more he overthinks it, instead of doing the opposite.
When he pushed his own tank into the chasm I was done.
48:09 "Although if this is a hornet it's gonna come out and web us... Not a hornet, a firefly, sorry."
Things this episode taught me about NL's play through of into the breach: Ryan has energetic cats
Misplays at 0:00 - 56:18
Everytime he says: "I stand by it!", I die a little bit inside...
Watching NL play this game is like watching baby's first steps... except the baby is talking shit the whole time like "I'm the best walker you've ever seen! Galaxy-brain walking baby" *SPLAT*
That's like the first twenty episodes of every game he's ever played, and most last dozens longer than that before he gets a clue.
Tell me about it, I can deal with the misplays but when he starts caling himself a genius and says he is being smart (as he kills his own units and buildings) I... just... can't...
*puts all his units in the bottom corner*
"We have such bad mobility!"
Three things that helped me a ton when I started playing this game, maybe they'll help you too:
1. The closer your units are to the absolute center of the map the better, as you can utilize the maximum movement for each unit. It generally works for me to just deploy my units as close to the middle as I can.

I like that this game has Reset Turn. I suspect Ryan's making full use of this feature also.

Eder Ribeiro I miss the final episode of Noire
I think the worst part is his impression that blocking the vek is always a good thing.
Easy moves or not those were some tough scenarios towards the end, damn alpha hornets are tough
Well now I’m confused 6 5 4 which episode is it
Adam McNassor 69
Technically 6 because he played an episode off camera and killed his save file, but the numbers are upsetting me too.
Oh you weren't here for when we went back in time on episode 4.5?
Pongze Lor yup
Nl you gotta use the island's special features. All the damage in the solar farm level could have been avoided using the sand smoke mechanic
Not to mention that the Artillery and Combat Mech are classified as 'Massive' and can survive water tiles/ move through them at the very least
A list of words the Egg is no longer allowed to say:

SIKE! that's the WRONG NUMBER!!!!!
Sike?
26:57 honestly since you mention windswept at the beginning of the turn I had already assumed you would do in your tank. ;)
Is this replacing Magicite?
that was a great series
Yo NL can you play magicite again?
Hopefully

I love the slow play, even if it still ends up with some misplays.
I was predicting the tank going into the chasm for 5 mins while you thought about it out loud :P Was pretty funny seeing him get dumped in. Thank god for reset turn lol...its a bit forgiving IMO.
No... No NL, you did not kill the Scion...
Hey commenters, Just so you know NL will be taking a generic pilot back in time a few times, please be understanding in the comments.
Is it generally a bad idea to take over a normal pilot compared to one you pick at the start? The skills they get from upgrades could be better tho
Aiika Yeah but named pilots have 2 skills plus one special skill, generic bois only have 2 sklls.
Aiika : pilot from the old timelike keep the exp , so you star at max rank pilot (or the last rank if you fail)
Omeka, yes but also that only helps if you're not going for all islands
How com they're called named pilots? Since, you know, they all have names.
NL please realize that you messed up last videos number as well as this one!
By god it's going to be an entire series of videos with incorrect video numbers
If I know NL then he's already doing it intentionally.
The thumbnail has the right video number! :-D
If he's doing it on purpose, he should get more creative with it.
You needn't worry about 3 enemies spawning and going out of your way to block it down to 2, 3 is not that big a deal.
Biggest problem is that the enemies he blocks don't go anywhere, meaning if he blocks 2 of 3 spawns this turn, he has to deal with five spawns on the next one - 3 new and 2 previously blocked. Actually killing stuff is way more productive.
Good old egg keeping up the trends of the title being one ahead of the thumbnail
Hey NL, you're doing good, can't wait to see how you keep improving in future episodes!
Somebody tell NL his units can be in water...
Alexis Fleury but they can’t attack so the only point would be to block damage
the point is that they don't die in water which is what NL is thinking
you totaly overvalue blocking spawns NL
Especially since they don't go away, meaning next turn you'll have even more enemies to deal with at once.
You seem to be getting a bit better!
"If it is *wrong enemy* is gonna web us, sorry i mean *wrong enemy*"
Gotta love NL
Yay, the title got updated! Thanks mate.
He HAS to know and is just trolling everyone. How could he not see the conflicting ep numbers?
Ergo maybe it's on purpose because he accidentally killed that one run off-camera, so that episode was skipped?
Seems a bit silly to purposely offset an entire series because of one mistake though..
I don't think its that far fetched
Strictly a better numbering system.
It's pretty easy to change a thumbnail, and even easier to adjust the title, so yeah, he might be trolling. ;)
As if he did not see the wind pushing his own tank into the chasm. Maybe he is playing stupid.
52:47 was perhaps the best moment of the video. Learning something!
You know what I noticed with any big youtuber playing Into the Breach?
It is WAY better to just put it on in the background while you play something else as a talk show.
Because, when you hear them talk, they sound like they have a better handle and fuckups ain't their fault.

Oh we are not thinking strategically, AND ALREADY USED THE TURN RESET.
Atleast you do not see the AMOUNT of fuckup included! XD
28:36 punch the tank and shoot the alpha hornet, use the cannon to move the webbers, makes the next turn pretty spicy though.
Lookout Rocklee, thats quite a gust
How much you wanna bet he doesn't adhere to the advice of the title?
Well, he does but he doesn't use his new time.
He took the title of the actual game a little too literally when he pushed his tank into a chasm.
NL you need to prioritize getting the objective, more than just blocking enemy spawns. Other than that, you are getting better.
Blocking enemy spawns is not something NL should do, tbh. It screws him over so hard, because it's the only thing he's focused on and doesn't think about enemy pacing. If he'd just focus on killing stuff that's on the field, it would go so much better for him.
I am so proud of your play at 5:45
"be honest, who could have predicted that" I could have, the moment you mentioned using the wind gust.
"so what did we learn last time? Definately we need to spread out, now watch me not spread my units out because we dont need to"
Well whatever you say!

It feels like the cats become increasingly terrorizing. I can't remember when NL did the last video without pushing the cats around.
It seems this game is doing NL's head in. The plays, the episode numbering... This might lead to a medykal emergency if he carries on like this. "Oi nurse we got ourselves a bad case of bloaty head here!"
This is going to sound stupid but playing this game for like 5 hours and I never considered looking at the enemies move distance lol. Good on you NL
yo all of your mechs can go in water there massive and also you wanted to know if a crab is an alfa or not 3 times in the same ep good for you
How long do think it'll take for him to start an island an episode??
LET'S GOOOOOOOO
Who else called him killing the tank at around 25 mins?
Everyone watching.
Inspired me to buy the game and try on my own.
Again, it takes time. More than just time though, it requires a certain methodical mindset. Trying to fly by the seat of pants through it may work from time to time, but mostly it will just lead to a death spiral.
Keep at it!

Silas Gates I think the game is pretty accessible to people who have never really played strategy games. So if you’re interested, go for it.
It cuts out most of the boring elements of strategy and it is really easy to learn while maintaining a lot of depth in the gameplay
This game has way more in common with chess than a classic RTS or TBS (real time strategy/turn based strategy). NL at 26:57 I predicted that, and I'm high as shit. Also can post the lost episodes 4 that was skipped over.
If you get a Grid Power and have full Grid Power, you get permanent Grid Defense.
apparently you are playing Gigantic
Why do I get the distinct feeling he misnumbered this one just to mess with people?
Nah, he's shown an inability to count before. He's just an idiot.
Then again, the description saying he's playing Gigantic isn't really a matter of counting, is it...
do a new CK2 playthrough
