Ok, just tell me what it is! It's a non-electric slow cooker! That's right - slow cook in the van, without plugging in anything. The perfect addition to vanlife... if you have room for it, that is. Follow along as I make a vegan vegetable stew recipe using the wonderbag!
Welcome to Minivan Camper Gal! I'm Kelly and I camp and travel in a Chrysler Pacifica Minivan, doing part-time van life. Here you will find van build videos, tips on the digital nomad lifestyle, general travel vlog videos, and more. I'm into minimalism, and I eat a mostly plant-based vegan diet. I'm still learning how to do vegan vanlife well! I have some great vegan camping recipes to share with you, but would love some suggestions, too! Sometimes I stealth camp in the city, but mostly I like to boondock. Join me and my camper van as we embark on all the car camping adventures!

My husband did this (a little differently) after deciding he was quitting his job with no money coming in. He heated things to boiling, took it off the stove, wrapped the pot in a fluffy towel and pulled out our old cooler and put the pot into it and shut the top. Then went out to mow, play with kids, play video games, etc. Our pans were predominantly steel, so I think that is what he used. When I got home from work, dinner was on the table, perfectly cooked and delicious! He learned to do this over the internet because 6 kids and one almost minimum wage job between us required us to save as much money as possible...
Obrigada por seu relato tão inspirador!
Brilliant
Yes, they are used regularly here in South Africa where we also often have periods of electricity loadshedding, ie when the national grid is overloaded and switched off to reserve power. Maybe use the bag to store away some other stuff like a jacket and winter bedding, then you can even sit on it. Love how you present your content in such a fun and no-nonsense way.
Hi C! Wow, how interesting! Thanks for watching all the way from South Africa!
Thermal cookers have been around for decades. Best to purchase one that vacuum seals so your food doesn't spill. Thermos puts out a very good one it even comes with an insulated travel bag. I believe Stanley has a version and there is an Aussie version. All of them work great. You can even bake a cake in them.
Went down a rabbit hole and found where a lady did temp testing on 4 options including Stanley and Wonderbag. Stanley won.
In Norway we just use our duvet. Pack it around the pot and leave it. 😉
We even have recepies on making duvet porridge.. 😊
Our duvets are pretty thick because it's cold here for 3/4 of the year.
I thought it might be a pull in pillow case, because that would be great. Stuffing it with clothes, blankets or whatever, then pull the string and make it into a small storage pillow bag.. 😁
Thanks Strawberry! Interesting to hear about Norway! And good tips for storage!
I've seen the same thing done on the cheap. Line a bucket or a box with your quilt, put the hot pot in, cover it with a pillow or two and you've got the same thing with what you have in your van. It's a slow cooker, so don't expect an immediate meal.

So fascinating - I'm inspired by the reduced use of fuel. What a boon to people who have such onerous chores just to prepare their food. And, as you point out, it's much healthier to be away from wood smoke. Thank you for another great video!
Very kool , i would use a smaller one , thank you
You can also leave it in the bag overnight, to have a hot meal in the morning. 😊
Delicius food, vut not convinsed for small places and singel living.
I do make similar often, and am using smaller pot for not have to eat the same for a week, especial with Red lentils, that make to be finished in + - 10 minutes.
Best for food needing long time kooking, I think.
Your resepie is simpel and taste good. Beans take longer time, so it can be useful there.
But kooking stews are simple and usely good in taste
Another gem of an off-grid cooking gadget! Always fun to see what you are going to come up with next😊 Looking forward to your next surprise minivan hack!!!
Love this! I always enjoy your videos. I’m building a 2004 Sienna and your tips have been so terrific! I just got my Mogics tube shower today. Fun stuff! Thank you for sharing. 👍
This is so cool! What a revolutionizing tool for people to use rather than tending to a fire. I love it.
I just found your channel tonight, and so far have over $1000 in purchases planned.
Hi Chris! Oh great, I'm glad to be of help!
I had heard of the Wonderbag but I'd never seen anyone use one. Your meal looked delicious! Thanks so much for sharing ths!
Maybe need a plastic bin or box to put it in if you cook while driving. And with lentils, cumin goes great!
I wonder if I get a beef stew ready, sauteeing the veggies and small beef cubes, add the V8 and a lil wine, ,get everything mix and started simmering, then put in the Wonder Bag, it would be safer and cheaper then using propane ,on low for 3-4 hours? Hmmm it might revolutionize my cooking options once I start living in a vehicle, again
Love it! Could get it ready before a hike and have hot meal when you get back without using any electricity or fuel!
Could use it to keep a small child warm in an emergency situation
Wow! That's amazing. The bag is sold in US and Canada now. I'm getting one. Thank you for the introduction.
Woohoo! Thanks for the update!
It’s a neat idea - Thermos has a thermocooker as well with an interior pot you cook with to bring everything up to a boil and then place it in the thermos outer pot. The Wonderbag is the same sort of thing - I’m not that keen on having something fabric covered as I’m not very neat and can imaging having to wash it on a regular basis. And it does seem to be a bit bulky but the cushion idea was neat for storage 😀
Hey Katherine! ooh, I'll have to look into the thermocooker. Thanks for the tip! Yeah, it's pretty bulky to have to a permanent spot in my van.
@@minivancampergal1554 I actually changed to using silicon oven mitts because I had to keep washing my insulated fabric ones so I know my limitations ! There was a narrowboat channel (Foxes Afloat) who used a thermocooker to reduce power consumption but the one they used (Mr D’s) seems to be only available in the UK and is pricey. I found the one by Thermos and I liked it’s pot in a pot design so it sits flat and stores easily.
I have one made by Wendy Jackson in the USA. She is developing a pattern and does Heat Retention Cooking classes. She is also known as The Perfect Pickler teaching foolproof fermentation.
Thanks for the interesting video. Btw, on their website it says "We recommend copper, steel, aluminum, enameled cast iron, cast iron and glassware pots." I was hoping to try my cast iron mini Dutch oven... this seems like a win, since it doubles as a pillow!
That is a really neat item. As far as what to do with it when you are not using it for cooking, it might make a great foot stool for relaxing.
Ooh, that's a good idea!
Very cool! We did the NO BUILD approach and love the cost effective approach and the ability to change things up in our van as needed! We always love to see what others are doing in their vans! Happy Travels! Keep making memories & adventure on! ~Karen & Shannon WOY
Ha yes, the ability to change things is such a benefit! I’m always changing my mind! Thanks for watching!
I would be afraid it would spill while traveling, maybe place in a bucket
Want one to try in this power outages will safe some time for other things, thnk you for sharing💕
There are lots of tutorials on youtube showing you how to make a Wonderbag if you can't buy one.
You could get a pot with a locking lid and you have less worry about spills
Ooh, great idea! Thanks!
You could store your kitchen things in the bag during the day.
Hey Marlene! Ooh, good tip... thanks!
🎉🎉Woohoo, they’re now shipping to the US. www.wonderbagworld.com/us-shop To see everything I use in my van, go to www.minivancampergal.com
Great video all round. Informative demonstration on a novel product that is no longer than it needs to be. I would definitely use this product with a pyrex that is equal to the size of meals I want out of it. (Great tip btw) 🙂
Hey Jeannie! Ooh, Pyrex- that’s what I need!

🙂👋
That’s really amazing! I can how wonderful it would be, especially if you had to tend afire all day❤❤❤
Cast iron is perfect for the WB. Le Creuset works very well in it.
Hi Maria, good to know, thanks!
Brilliant, had not heard of this. Love your content
Thank you!
here in the uk i have heard it called a 'hay box', literally a box stuffed with hay. Love your vids and experimentations
Oh, cool! Thanks for watching!
It is a hay box they have used them for years here in the U.S.. Hers is handier for camping, though.
They are a shipping to the USA and depending on how many are purchased is how much the shipping cost is. LIMITED STOCK !!!!! There are 5 different colors to choose from as well 😊
Yay! I hope you like yours!
Honey that is incredible I Love the last of the sink.
🌹❤🌹👍🙏🇺🇸
Thanks!
Nice! I just looked at their website. They come in small, medium & large - I’m guessing you’ve got the large! 😄
Oh! I’m not sure since I bought it on eBay. But yes, I’d assume large
If my pressure cooker had a removable handle, maybe the Wonderbag would even cook pinto beans once they were up to the pressure release temperature.
I cook beans using the wonder bag all the time - I soak them then heat up to boiling for about 20-25 min then put in wonder bag
I just bought ebay said last one. Have put of beans in it right now
that's a pretty cool gadget, now you can use a hot logic to heat up the rest of the stew, they are the exact same size containers that come with it.
Looks like a good option to conserve fuel but it's way to big an iten for me to store in the van. Thanks for the demo and review.
Store some of your clothes in it and sit on it.
Very cool😊
Thanks!
That's brilliant 👏
Love your recipie .definitely gonna try it .I have a" shuttle chef . perfect for a small camper van ....
Ooh, the shuttle chef looks cool!
Thermal cooker is smaller in size than Wonderbag.
i downloaded a pattern to make one of these like 5 or 6 years ago and still haven't made one. shame on me!!! I think I got the pattern from food storage made easy website. It works like a crock pot with no electricity. boil let sit cooks.
Very cool 😎 You could use it for storage.
Ooh, good idea!
Might be something I would buy for a cat or dog to sleep in to keep them warm with their own body heat but that is about it.
Hopefully it wouldn’t cook them. 😱 Their body temps are higher than ours. But i guess you wouldn’t have the lid on LOL. Maybe spread out a bit, it might be just the ticket!
@@VanityBitty 🤣😂
I'm from Cape Town South Africa and I use it to make Breyani, curries, soups and lots more dishes
Lol!!
I wouldn't mind having one of those! I use stainless steel pots
Nice! In Dutch it is called a 'hooimadam' translation: hay madam. Because in earlier days they made that with hay.
So nice that they make them again!
Just an Idea...what if you would put the pot in your bedding? Under the duvet and pillows? Shouldnt it have kind of the same effect? Only because you would safe the space in your van cuz the bedding is already there... 😅 My mom uses to keep food warm like this over a period of time....
Success! Thanks for sharing! I can relate to finding a wonderful “no-fuel” cooking device but finding the space for it is difficult! I have a Sun Oven that I love to use to bake bread, stews, casseroles, etc. I made space for it in our 5th wheel, but it would be too big I’m afraid for my minivan… Hmmm… unless I just took it once in a while and stored it in my “attic”… I think the Wonderbag would be worth the trouble of finding space for it… Those of us that are part-time can juggle gear differently… If I were full-time in my van like I was in the 5th wheel I’d look at things differently. Thanks!
Yes, it’s definitely easier being able to shuffle gear around! Thanks for watching!
I would FIND room for it! I love it. That’s amazing. You test out the funnest products. Wish they were available here. I’d get one for sure for the van. Does it cook meat? 😬
Hey Dawn! Haha, I’m glad you like it. Yes, it cooks meat. There are several meat recipes for it
There are patterns on RUclips to make these.
I would definitly use it for a pillow also, it's pertty neat to have
Btw I love your video's ❤️👍🏽😊
Just don't accidentally let your head slip inside while you're sleeping.... 🤯
Haha, yeah, that would be bad, lol! Thanks for watching Tosha and Jonathan!
I need one of those 😂
I have one! Where did I put that thing?! 😂
Thanks for sharing this! What is your Wonderbag filled with as the insulation? Hope it's not those synthetic bean bag pellets. I think I may try it with a cooler stuffed with pouches of kapok fiber - less likely to tip or spill in something square. Kapok is a good insulator if anyone is thinking of making their own.
It’s filled with “re-purposed foam insulation for the interior, helping to divert a large quantity of material from landfill each year.”
Interesting!! I might consider using. How do you clean it if something spills?
I think you can just clean it with a damp rag
I just got one. I went to eBay. One left. I would get rid of crock pot and save space. I could put hoody inside
There are various sizes. Mine was a 6 liters.
Hey John! Alright, you got one! Let me know how you like it!
Well, it saves fuel ,in the long run.
Do you think you could cook it outside at a campground? I mean, how would you prevent the animals (ex racoon) fom trying to eat it?
Hm, it depends on what kind of critters there are, but it would really be bad to find a big squirrel hole chewed through the side! When in doubt, I’d leave it protected.
Does it work with meat, too? Like minced beef and stuff?
Hey Kat! Yes, I think it would- there are a lot of meat recipes for it.
Cooked " al dente". Method is aldo called" hay chest. In farms people put hay in a chest like eg. Your toilet and bury the pot in it. Check " hooikist".
Bon appétit
Honey I would use it that is cool for me.🌹❤🌹👍🙏🇺🇸
Glad you like it!
