I worked as a chef in 5-star properties in India, including Hyatt, Oberoi, Leela, etc, with close to 2 years of experience. Quarantine took my job, and I started learning to code. 1.5 years later, I landed a job, and now it'll be close to 2 years for me to be a developer. The things Kirat mentioned are really accurate.
No matter how much burnout you go through to learn code while coming from a non-technical background, if you keep pushing yourself and grow that hunger in you to solve problems, you will keep growing.
Also shout out of 100xDevs batch 1, that is something that helped me a lot as I have no mentors to interact with; it was really a great push for my career.

Such a coincidence ! I am really good in mathematics and the theoretical part of AI architecture ( somewhere around 8-9/10 ). Have worked for around 3 years in software development industry but still somewhere I was feeling the urge to level up my programming skills. Its petty descent right now (just workable knowledge) but I am not at all contented with the current level. And coincidently came across this video of HarKirat ! Timing !!!!!!!!! His words are always on point ! Consider me as a fan of his approach and thought process ! 🙌

  • @Siva-en9sw
    @Siva-en9sw 9 месяцев назад +16

What he is telling is so true, try to get your hands dirty in code. The best example is many of the coding tutorials or books will almost never teach about trouble shooting and scalability. The libraries which are shown in those will be outdated and configuration will be outdated, so we need to troubleshoot for compatibility. So practice practice and practice whatever you are trying to do, my approach is always going with full stack approach until Devops pipeline so that it will give an overall understanding on how the roadmap works along with importance of version controlling.

Calculus major. Self-taught programmer... C++ is my first language... I also have two degrees. Eng. Design & Drafting and Network Systems Admin... Obviously, I'm NOT going to go back to college for a 3rd degree - Self-teaching is my ONLY other option now. We are human, sometimes, we make the wrong or incorrect choice in life (but that's life.) Sometimes, we choose a path in life that may be thought of as correct at the time, but sometimes those choices do not feed the 'belly of desire' for continued challenges and growth. I get bored too easily doing something that is not challenging enough for me. It also does not matter how old you are - you can always learn something new. I am proof of that.
At this moment, coding is one thing that feeds that desire for me. I took a short break from it (at the time I was delving into C#), now I am back at grinding C++... I truly do love & enjoy doing this, because it feeds my mind well. I love grinding code. Thank you, for your input & advice - I am going to keep this journey going !!

The fact is when you escape Tutorial Hell, you start hating video tutorials. This is how I have become. I have been working on a project since last 3 months, writing APIs, sockets, unit tests etc. just by documentations, chat gpt and Google. Seriously saying it takes time. There was a time when I was thinking for 3 hours and coded for 30 minutes. I learnt B+Trees, Indexing, implemented Linked Lists in the project, created testing environments, refractored a lot of code for writing tests, took help from open sourced repositories and much more. Feeling happy that I didn't follow that standard DSA and web dev path!!

I watch tutorials at the same time i take notes of it. Then i make and customized everything which i learn from that tutorial example: if the tutorial is html , css then i make the exact website with different style or use grid instead of flex , and its work for me , and if you saw documentation of that technology then its difficult to use it if you watch tutorials then you brain memorize it how the things actually work.

You mentioned that you don't rely heavily on tutorials, but I'm currently engaged in studying machine learning and following Andrew Ng's course on Coursera. How can one effectively learn without depending on tutorials, and do you have a structured approach or learning framework for artificial intelligence and machine learning?

Look, I don't know about the course and all that you're doing, but I will tell you this, most and 90% of tutorials are made for beginners like those tutorials spoonfeed you, you totally might want them, when you don't know what you're doing and what to do, but you should go through them as quickly as possible, and start doing things on your once, for ex: I am fairly new to docker, I started with youtube, didn't get a lot of things, started reading DOCS didn't get a lot of meaning, then I started a tutorial from udemy, then I got a hell lot of meaning from all that, and I'm going through that tutorial really fast because the documentation is always there, and yes I'm doing all the practise as well, Choose a course that is introductory and concise, not something that will eat you whole semester. And then build your own projects from scratch like renting VPS, buying domains, etc. Using Nginx, sub-domains, load-balancing and Linux, and learn to type fast and accurately most importantly.

Just make a few projects and then you might have a lot of motivation to do DSA and things will stick to your mind since that will the the only things stopping a beginner to get a job for the first time after that nobody cares about DSA my advice.@@Crimsonzephy

Self taught here. Best advice I could give is to build something. Anything. Pick a project, and start on it. Figure it out as you go. Learning on StackOverflow is 1000% better than learning on RUclips.

I am one month into my first job, fresh out of college. In college, I used to focus on AI/ML and then DSA to get a job. Currently, my role is as a full-stack developer in IT supply chain. I love the work my team is doing and I see a scope to learn a lot in this job. But I can't help but feel dumb or useless because I cannot do any work currently without anyone's help. Please advise me on what I can do to become proficient at what I am doing.

I have 12+ years of software engineering experience and for past 3yrs I have been recruiting candidates & training them as well. I know exactly what you are going through...😅
      My suggestion would be-
      -Don't give up
      -Don't get demotivated
      -Don't procastinate
-Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
Every weekend when your friends go out partying (usually thats the culture 😂) try to spend some time upskilling yourself. Google everything you don't know, use stack overflow..
I wish I had stack overflow, youtube back in my college days. We learnt from our mistakes but the entire process was fun!!
Don't let anyone else determine your worth; you decide what you deserve. Treat yourself with the same love and care you give to others; you are equally important. Make the most of what you have and keep your standards high. All the best!!

Actually the term 'self-taught' developer or programmer refers to the group of peps who donno 've any computer science degree but still manage to taught themselves how to write code and stuffs.

I genuinely don't think getting IIT cse degree can be considered into self taught, yes for most of the times you have yo teach yourself but atleast you get enough exposure about computer architecture, design patterns etc because duh you passed you degree it's not like you cleared exams without studies that exposure is something I would kill for, besides that great video and tips for beginners

    1. Lack of structured plan
    2.Tutorial hell
    3.juat worry about projects
    4.Do not do self doubt
5.Do practical instead of reading theory.
    5(a).focus on writing code

Don't worry about these things...the range of college matters only during the company's on-campus placements .... After you leave college, Only skill matters you just focus on improving your skills... And one day it will pay you.....Yeah today there are numerous online tutorial are available but those who constantly practicing are in less numbers.... So be a person who can maintain consistency in learning...... All the best for your future
