ISS (World War 3, Radiation Cure, and Paranoia in Space) EXPLAINED

- Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained, and as requested, today we’re diving into the recently released sci-fi thriller, ISS. Starring Ariana DeBose, Chris Messina, John Gallagher Jr., Masha Mashkova, Costa Ronin, and Pilou Asbæk - we follow astronauts and cosmonauts from America and Russia that find their fates intertwined and tested. As World War III erupts on Earth, the tension escalates aboard the space station, transforming it into a microcosm of the planet below.
The sci-fi thriller, celebrated for iconic films like "Alien," "Gravity," and "The Martian," which combine the mystery of the cosmos with human drama (set against a backdrop of impressive special effects and intelligent scripts) tends to thrive on the portrayal of space as an uncontrollable constant, a vast expanse where conflict and mission-driven narratives intertwine. And "I.S.S.," the first sci-fi release of 2024, enters the genre, offering a new perspective by asking, what if the central conflict is entirely beyond the characters' control?

I can't think of a group of people less likely to fall into anarchy than Astronauts.
Yup, all their training, science, & collaboration goes out the door after 1 email
Seriously. 1% chance of astronauts doing this. They typically don’t give a crap about nationality up there from the interviews I have heard
Aye. For the Apollo 13 movie they pretty much had to invent drama and bickering between the astronauts that never happened because in real life the guys were stone cold professionals.
@@dars5229it’s actually insane listening to the actual recording of the crew on Apollo 13 and how calm and collected they were throughout the entire thing
@@zacharync3066they were seasoned test pilots for the Air Force, every one of them. They were literally used to breathing and thinking about dangerous situations and potential death. They weren’t phased by anything that happened on the spaceflight it was quite mild tbh compared to things they’d face when aerodynamics come into play.
I'm going to give it a watch I still think the movie Sunshine is underrated.
It's a fucking masterpiece until the last 10 minutes then it has a stroke then it gets its shit together for the last couple minutes again.
F yes its underrated.
I did NOT like Sunshine, It was TOO unrealistic and got too weird near the end. ISS is not much better. Too much of the behavior of the characters made no sense to the story.
DUDE RIGHT?! Thanks for bringing up that gem!
The studio dumped it in January and barely advertised. Told me what I needed to know before even considering to watch this one.
Overrated Celebs Who Actually Suck At Acting
I want to give this movie a shot but I have a feeling it'll turn out to be extremely obnoxious just with the premise. The ISS has no tactical purpose, it's just a science platform. If superpower countries were attacked, the ISS would just be abandoned and couldn't be resupplied.
I guess it's all they could do to avoid the realistic approach where a bunch of scientists get cut off and slowly starve until the platform eventually runs out of air and fuel and eventually deorbits itself, or they collectively decide to do it manually.
On this we very much agree. Except that apparently they were carrying the cure for radiation poisoning (weird but alright) - something they probably should have put in the trailer so we knew there were actually real stakes.
@@emarley9that bit was so intensely stupid. Yes we’re going to take this experimental vial from the ISS down to earth and develop that into something useful overnight. We’ll first need to rebuild our supply chains and industrial capacity somehow which should take what 48 hours?
@@seanh0123 haha indeed. It's very much a socialist perspective on product distribution. "You have? Give! Then *we* have! Or just me. But that's better anyway."
There is a time to ham-fist politics into things. This is not one of those times. @@emarley9
It was pretty boring
First aliens, now humans. ISS can’t catch a break.
Don't forget the asteroid bits in Armageddon.
The actual iss will be intentionally crashed into the pacific in the next decade or so.
Which will then make way for a Jeff bezos funded replacement. Not kidding.
Robots : We're next then?
@@superhappyfuntime5466that was MIR. 😅
😂😂
it makes no sense if the iss was a weapon platform, i could understand wanting control but both country's are nuked so why fight each over it makes no sense.
Its a bullcrap plot device. This movie was NOT well thought out plot wise.
I suppose the governments knew about the radiation sickness cure. What I'm more confused about is why would these governments even still exist and have the means to communicate. Communication infrastructure is the first thing to be targeted.
@@yaldabaoth2 My guess is the most powerful and important people in government had a contingency like underground fortress to hide in or something. Something similar happened in the 1983 movie called THE DAY AFTER.
@@yaldabaoth2 also the magnetic pulse would of destroyed most of our technology, or the ability to make it and if the radiation cure did work how would we make with everything destroyed
@@rellett1I don’t think you quite understand just how advanced those underground bunkers are. They’re all emp shielded, and any government controlled ones meant for a situation like this would have science and medical labs within it
They weren’t nuked, the earth was attacked by a bug meteorite and the movie is trying to cover it up.

Wouldnt it been funny if between the Russians and Americans there was just a single guy from like new Zealand and the whole time each side is trying to convince him to betray the others or he just stays in the background chilling cuz he dosnt have a dog in the game
Nah, they need a Canadian lol. There's almost always one on board anyway, and Chris Hadfield commanded it like a boss. His book is really amazing too. Plus, they could have used the real Canada Arm instead of a fake arm...
It gets overshadowed, but it's possibly the single most important tool for the astronauts. It has saved them thousands of dangerous space walks, which also need to be planned for like a week; not good for urgent repairs.
@@daveyjones8969 I think a Canadian character wouldn't have as much of a 3rd party vibe in this narrative because of their proximity to the USA. You're 100% right about Chris Haddonfield that man is badass and I really need to get his book as its been on my reading list since it was published!
@@IW3527 Canada is in NATO and is part of NORAD so you are right they would have a dog in the game, since Canada is also eating nukes, in fact Europe and Asia would eat nukea too, Europe is mostly NATO and has nukes, China, North Korea,South Korea and Japan all have alliances with the US or Russia. Hell I would not be surprised if Australia and New Zealand ate nukes too since they are allies to the US.
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see you do some explorations of the Expanse!!!!
Seconded! Such an amazing series!
I can't imagine of a worse place to be during a nuclear war than in space even without any threat just to be there stuck watching the world burn
I know it's going to have a different theme but I can't help but get Cloverfield Paradox vibes.
That was a horrendous film...
Now that you mention it, Both movies have WW3 on Earth and WW3 on the Space Station their on. There might be more that I didn't think of.
@@daveyjones8969yes chef thank you chef
@@lucre113 If you're going to insult me, at least have it make sense so it has a chance of stinging lol.
@@daveyjones8969 I'm pretty sure dude wasn't being sarcastic 🤣 but the movie wasn't trash
Nothing beats seeing another notification for your channel. Always great content with such in depth analysis. Cheers legend
@FilmComicsExplained Wow I missed this, got to give it a watch.
Kind of reminds me of the astro/cosmonauts in the WWZ book that had to somehow survive and make it back down to Earth. They were very lucky to have not been completely forgotten about in that book; I wonder how this movie will end.
(Also been watching your channel for years, started with the 28 Days Later graphic novel series you did (would also be really cool to see more stuff like that again :o ) Cheers bro!
Bugger, been busy all day and am late for your upload.
Excellent review Niyat 👌
I don't see the point of countries fighting over the space station during a nuclear war/winter.
"whoever control the sky control the world"
your satellite internet are in space, the astronaut is the one fix it and "unfix" it, then ask your friend how many they want to pay before you unplug their communication device.
@@r01d2 in the after math of a nuclear war, radiation Free Shelter with clean air, food and water is the most important thing.
@@r01d2the ISS has nothing to do with commsats and in a nuclear war civvie networks would probably just drop out
@@r01d2Yes, people think it's gonna be kumbaya up there in an event like this.
It’s semi implied in the ISS podcast that covers the first hour of the nuclear war but implying the that the governments of bounty countries realizes that most CC locations will be storied and with lose of there secure communications with military hardware they need a way to tensever massages to there forces to continue fighting or rebuilding there nations
Thank the lawd for another FCE video I needed one after today.
I got you brother, hope your day gets better chief!
This movie is an amazing concept, but it wasn't handled by the best of writers/directors.
Seems like a common theme in Hollywood
Felt like this movie had no message.
@@tmmnago2722yeah, seems like they started with the nuclear apocalypse montage and worked backwards to try to build a full plot around it
still not watch it but when I told my friends about the synopsis, all reply is same "they're non-combatant people, no obligation to support their country in war"
in nutshell calling the plot is not possible happening in the right mind.
It makes more sense when you consider that out out of 330 NASA astronauts 201 of them are former military. Don't know about Russia but at least for the USA it would make sense that some may prioritize national allegiance in such a situation.
The premise of this film just feels exhausting and exploitative of current events but also kind of late since not only is the ISS coming down but the Russians are also abandoning the program.
It's kinda not believable because if you are on a floating life raft the size of half a football field flying hundreds of miles a hour through hostile space with no military strategic, only scientific value, you aren't going to put anyone in danger because they are up there with you.
I love your channel and your videos. After 7 years of watching your videos, this was the first time i lost track and found hard to grasp what the hell was going on. Mind you cloverfield paradox was explained seamlessly. Perhaps this was a shorter and quicker pace review. But i rarely find myself venturing to another channel to see a review from where i first checked yours out on. Never the less thanks for sharing, if it wasnt for you i would've never known this movie existed.
Great video, I swear without you my day wouldn’t be as good
Whether it's climate change, aliens, technological malfunctions, or other humans, space stations suck to be on.😱
So sayeth earthman *sticks flag in own yard*
Your videos are so great and well put through, I remember your first vids. Wish these movies could’ve been better
Call me an idealist but couldn’t someone aboard the ISS just call a meeting & say, “hey we were given crazy orders, but we aint doing that. Lets make decision how we want to handle this up here”
Wonder if the Soyuz still comes with a survival pistol in its kit.
Shotgun no? Because of bears and wolves
@@purpleranger5987 I forget what type, I would assume some sort of 30-30 or near caliber. With a shotgun you'd risk just pissing it off.
Funniest thing is that if this happened, I'm almost certain the astronauts/cosmonauts would just be like "what? No dude"
You don't know that.
@@dranixrush3306 Considering that the closest we ever came to nuclear war was when a Russian nuclear bunker received launch orders, but the operative on duty questioned it and held fire, I'm on the side of "The Americans would get orders to take the ISS by force while the Russians realised there is no bloody point".
@@oxymoron02 The two scenarios have slight differences, but important differences especially considering that you can clearly see a nuclear war ongoing. It would make more sense to follow the given directives.
@@dranixrush3306the ISS doesn’t have or provide any tactical advantages, so no
@@hectito982 It had medicine to combat radiation or some shit. That would be a good tactical advantage.
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😊

@@filmcomicsexplained Thank you for your reply. Scary times Sir. Great channel my friend 👏
Sooo ... Basically a Call of Duty Ghost level, got it. 😂
I just watched this with my mom. We liked it
The movie made no sense. Why did she kill ANOTHER AMERICAN near the end of the movie. How was HE a danger to her? And his motives made no sense either. He goes from making a SANDWICH to having to be killed? I did not get it.
Explore The Ancient Enemy from The Phantoms.
Wait this reminds me of among us
Sus
Super sussy . You can't even trust your own comrades. 😮
That reminds me of the movie from the 80's Def-con4
I enjoyed this video more than the movie.
The only time I can think of WW3 and the international space station together was the original modern warfare 2
Must be comforting and sad to be on a space station while the world burns below 😢.
Hi Niyat. Will you ever do a Q&A?
I just watch the movies like 3 hours it was great
If Chris messina is in this then it’s a watch from me,He was in that film devil that was superb,
This makes me think of something Black Mirror would make 🤔
Just saw this movie last night. We had a very in depth discussion about it all the way home. I don't think you can take very much at face value in the movie. It looks like a science fiction movie, but everything is an analogy or allegorical. The firestorm on the planet is too big for the scale, but it doesn't need to be scientifically accurate. The constant glow and what it represents is more important. The loss of Gordon and Nika to me represents so much more than just plot contrivance. They represent the futility of love when war is determined to tear the world apart. As for the radiation sickness cure. If you think about it, there really isn't a cure, or a defense, against radiation that you inject or take. But that isn't important, it is what the cure represents. It is a decision that the characters need to make, and one we as the audience need to contemplate. It couldn't be the cure for cancer or old age, it had to be the one thing that would bring salvation for everyone on Earth. It had to be radiation sickness. Once the radiation starts circling the globe, everyone is going to need it. The idea is that the final 2 survivors have to choose whether or not to give the world a 2nd chance. If they do, which side would get it? They appear to choose the 3rd option, a hope to give it to a different country that won't use it to dominate the other, but give the whole world a chance. Completing their character arcs of not having to choose a side. I think this movie is way underrated right now. It is amazingly brilliant and I hope it gets it's a more fair assessment in the future.
I wish I had seen this 7 hours ago....
Its pretty, and well acted, but the directorial and editorial choices are disappointing.
Chekov's air system was probably the most egregious.
The setup is solid, the follow through is just bland, and flavorless. Almost like they were afraid to make any kind of statement for fear of being to pro or anti American or Russian.
Also, I would argue this is NOT sci-fi.
It is set in space, and it postulates a potential future or alternate present, however science, actual or imagined, has little impact on the plot. This same story could have been told in an Antarctic research base, or any other isolated location with a dependency on the greater world for continued existence.
Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbæk) is probably the only redeeming feature of this otherwise meandering meh burger.
tbh, the movie’s plot feels like a Black Mirror episode.
@FilmComicsExplained I think we just need to start a petition or fundraiser for what we all know would be the best movie ever. Terminator vs predator vs aliens vs Robocop vs demolition man vs Rambo vs John McClain vs Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh vs last action hero vs Judge Dredd vs Snake Plissken vs Jack Burton vs Jackie chan vs Tango and Cash vs John Matrix vs Jack Ryan (Clear and present danger) . Hollywood just ain't got the chutzpah.
Sucks bc the visuals don’t look half bad.
Story is most important tho, and should always be the prime concern.
I can watch a great story with bad cgi but a bad story w good cgi is a no.
I don’t get how they expect to win with Euron Greyjoy on the team!!! Someone is going to get “a finger in the bum”!!
Somebody poisoned the waterhole!
SPACE!!!
😂
I remeber long ago there was an Episode of The Outer Limits with kind of the same plot but on Mars.
have you ever done HBO The Leftovers?
With the ending though, is there even a earth to back to 😢
Post the next planet of the apes movie analysis please 🙏🏼
I’m in the minority here but I liked this movie. Yeaa it had plot holes but I would rather have it then not. im interested to see how the world below is In a sequel and it didn’t end how I assumed. Love sci fi
Pilou Asbæk is so underrated. He looks like Emile Hursch and Ewen McGregor had a son.
If it went more into what was going on and happening on Earth it would have been better. It was good though
3:09 so its a mix of mw2 and the famous muiltyplayer game in a space station where 1 person is a spy.
i couldn't get over the idiotic haircut Kira has
Strong women
honestly I think she rocks it
I wonder if they took any ideas from the 80s VHS rental Defcon 4. Not a direct ripoff but a lot of similarities. They definitely got a budget over that campy film.
Fun fact, the movie was filmed on the same Hollywood set NASA use for the ISS.
😂😂😂😂 🤦
Read Neal Stephenson’s, Seven Eve’s if you want a look at how astronauts would most likely act on the ISS during a world ending event.
@FilmComicsExplained and no i didnt forget about Freddy vs Jason vs Michael Myers vs leather face vs pinhead vs pumpkin head vs Buffalo Bill vs Ed Gein. That's the second movie which then culminates into the 3rd filmfor a horror vs action super mega hyper ultra battle royal! Where the twist at the end is they actually all have to face off against the lawnmower man..... *head explosions*
And for more money, in the end credits, Ed gein and Buffalo bill defect to lawnmower man. For some sort of violence pain flesh furniture arts and crafts orgy as the 4th installment. It will be a little risqué ill admit, but it's in good hands.....its alll in good hands... :3
Film really fizzled out after the climax. They didn’t know what else to say after that point.
So this is why NASA have Johnny Kim: astronaut, Harvard MD and Navy Seal operator …
Love the video Can you do Department of Mysteries,Azkaban,Avery family,Carrow family,Morsmordre,Theodore Nott,Antonin Dolohov and Yaxley Harry Potter
How would even cure radiation? Isn't the deal with radiation that you can only block it, not remove it from the body?
Gallager’s son was in this
What would taking the iss really do?
I think it would have been more chilling had the Earth just gone complwtely dark and not on fire. No.lights, barely any communication or anything.
I couldn't imagine how creepy it would be looking at essentially a dead planet.
Kinda reminds me of the movie 2010. While not the same, there's the same idea of US vs Russia while in space and a stressful situation going on.
2010 is a wonderful movie.
ah yes, the russian as bad guy in hollywood movie is coming back...
this will be a cult classic soon with everything going on the planet right now. peace my friends.
Well, I'm sure they have fun touching down in the middle of the pacific ocean.
More and for joel and until next Friday
Nightmare scenario
Angela Bassett did the thing...lol
Is this a sequall to modern warfare 2?...
Please tell me in the final fight, someone says the line, "kiss my ISS!"
IRL everyone would just want to go home.
Think NASA has agreement that geopolitics on earth has no affect on astronauts on ISS, this is to ensure that this film doesn’t take place
The Plague 2006

my favourite space movie still The Martian.
in that movie nobody asking what's your sexuality (seriously no romance in it) or what you represent, just Mark Watney want to survive, and everybody no matter what race or status just want him go home.
Among us live action was great
It's not like the ISS is the equivalent of the Hammer of Dawn from Gears of War, so why fight about it?
more
No. It's suspension, but you're still in school.
I don't know the hell scape on earth kinda overwhelmed my suspension of belief.. as if nukes are that powerful
How silly is that, if WW3 does erupt they could potentially be the last humans so why fight?
Everything about this movie is so bad it's funny.
Or you could just take everyone out and be supreme ruler of space.
Was pretty decent up until the ending. Ending this movie was so weak.
I still do not understand that ending. Did you?
Honestly....movie was mid
The outer limits dd a even lower budget of this story, When communication break down, and nations are on the edge. Did someone strike, should we hit first, what if its on. With no coms people start to get primal, and selfish. The ugly side of humanity shows its face.
Too unrealistic, the Russians would've just locked themselves away after the first toilet backed up.
Captain Price would have just nuked it
Eat bones!
My girlfriend went to Palm Springs and saw this.
It was the most ISS i think ive ever seen, which was certainly a movie.
Premise doesn't make any sense at all.
What's the point of loyalty to countries that no longer exist?
You want to fight over whose country is the most unhabitable?
Kira - the beacon of hope and resistance. Which skin color and gender should the actor be? Well boys, it’s time to get that sweet sweet ESG cash.
this sort of whining sounds more like a dog whistle my dude
