  • Marie Antoinette: The King is dying
What’s happening in this Marie Antoinette movie clip?

What’s the Marie Antoinette movie about?
Marie-Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst) is the beautiful, charming, but naïve youngest daughter of Austria's empress Maria Theresa (Marianne Faithfull). She is selected by her mother to marry her second cousin, the Dauphin of France, Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman), and seal an alliance between the two rival countries. However, their marriage will not go as planned, since Louis XVI doesn’t want to have intercourse with Marie-Antoinette. Thus, she can’t get pregnant, which is a problem. She finds solace in buying lavish gowns and shoes, eating elaborate cakes and pastries, and gambling with her lady friends at cards.
The movie narrates her story as Queen of France, as well as her downfall.

@@Mourtzouphlos240 Oh not at all, you couldn't just abdicate! And you wouldn't anyway! From the very second that man was born, the legacy, the inherent responsibility for crown and country was indoctrinated in him, 100% manifested as his one god-given purpose in life. I mean, don't forget that an heir (like anyone) was raised in the faith that everything was God's plan and that you'd incure God's wrath if you tried to ignore your individual purpose. So...God aside, in 18th-century France, the regent couldn't just say "Awfully sorry guys, I really don't feel like it!" and move on to ted talks and cocktail parties.
Don't think of this as a burocratic formality, a back door you could simply make use of. A monarch couldn't just "resign the presidency" and hand the whole business over to the vice. Even if there was a dynastic replacement (like a younger brother), a monarch filing for abdication actually had to comply with particular requirements. And after going through all that trouble, after ruining your name in the history books, you would be forced into exile, with rare possessions, no purpose in life and no right to see your family or to set foot on your home country again.

Louis XV died of smallpox, a disease that was both terrifying and hyper-contagious. He was almost completely alone as no one wanted to be near him. When he finally expired his remains were interred with great haste and minimal ceremony. There was little mourning beyond that required by pure formality as he was deeply unpopular.

I am really convinced that neither Marie Antoinette nor the Dauphin Louis had been looking forward to reigning. She had been close to Louis XV and had witnessed the strain of royal duties. At 15 she was in her formative years and knew the power of freedom to do what one wished, like going to masked balls, etc. without a royal reason or ceremony.
Louis had grown up spending time among several royal palaces. Although very strictly taught what was considered to be proper for a future king, he had ample time for his various hobbies When they realized that their future time of amusements would be curtailed to include very important members of the Court, friends or non-friends, it would have had to be disturbing to them. As for Madame due Barry, I think she had something of an adventurous spirit and personality and could adjust to hardships. Her appeal to Louis XV was that she caused him to feel young again, before the trappings of a royal life began to weigh upon his presumably good nature.
p.s. Although MA's mother, Empress Maria Therese was consciousness about teaching her children the rules of a royal life, she was also responsible for several other children and ruling over the Empire, I guess that the future Dauphine's closest companions were those who supervised her outdoor activities and may have even had a crush on one or two of them. Leaving it all behind in Vienna had to be difficult and she may have resented the apparent freedoms enjoyed by Madame due Barry, whose only real obligation was to amuse the King, but she also had to watch her politics with other courtiers. The old Aunt's noticed this, they also had much free time, and went out of their ways to cause a rift, if only for their amusements or at the behest of some very rich and powerful members of the Court miffed by the fact that the morning sun, in their world, would not be 'rising for them'. France at the time was one of the most, if not the most powerful nation in Europe.

They were babies: she was 18 , he was 19. They had no idea of how to rule, and the years of financial waste & mismanagement was brewing discontent in Paris. His ill-advised decisions, her inability to conceive for 7 years, and the growing pressures of court life, created the perfect storm for their untimely ending. They were the wrong people, in the wrong place, at the wrong time.
