you're definitely one of the good guys that help out animals in need. thank you that there are still a lot more of us that help out animals in need of help.
wow this is amazing made me cry a little because I know most people wouldn't even care to help the hopeless little guy and you guys did that's incredible you're good people:))
@jarred92993 That's so sweet! I wish more people like you were out there doing this. I just read in a book it's up to people and nature to help these animals survive. I just got through caring for a baby woodpecker and had released it on Xmas morning Dec 25th, 2011 Sunday. I had to care from him since Thursday Dec 22nd, 2011. It took days to get his strength back and to gain full flight. My cousin's kids found him and couldn't find his parents, nest or siblings and he was weak.
The great horned owls are huge! I got 4 barred owls(bigger than any hawks),thats made a home in my backyard.I love sitting on the back deck, cold one in hand, and all I hear are crickets, owls, raccoon chatters, and an occasional great blue heron.I have a creek in my backyard, and my deck overlooking it.I love nights like this.Still between jobs,so all I have is time and nature lol.
Beautiful, I found a baby today on the midline of the highway. When I picked him up (not prepared, no gloves) his talon went into my fingure, so scared. Now home and in an old cage with grass material. He will drink when I use my fingers and is eating a tiny bit of leftover steak fat tonight. Will go in the early a.m. for catfood to see if he will eat this too.
the owlet was lucky you came along. I like stories such as this. Consider yourselves lucky to get the opportunity to ''share'' time w/ him. His left eye seems to be still ''injured''. perhaps you can ask a bird vet if it will heel on it's own , or if theres something you can do for his eye. I sincerely hope he wasn't blinded by whatever it was that happened to him. perhaps when you release him to the wild, he might come back for a visit from time to time, Animals have a way of doing that.
Would love to know how he's doing now. Were you able to release it back again to the wild or did you have to find an owl breeder/keeper to give this little guy a better chance of survival? Or did you guys keep him? Pretty little owl, and thank you for caring enough to rescue him. Awesome! *thumbs up*
I hope you feed the little guy a diet complete mouse parts, they are so specialized that 100 percent of a mouse is needed, eyes, bones, guts, head, tail, etc. or they can get "glass joints" where their bones fuse and have major major problems. Great job!
i whispered "you'll be ok now" when he ate from the spoon.im completely alone in a dark, empty house....nobody else here.. i feel like such an idiot.. but i dont care. haha sooo cute!
Great video. Whenever I rescue animals, the first indication that they're going to be OK is when they eat. Eating in the main thing in survival. Sometimes it just takes a while, then I set them free. We have to let Nature take its course. Any updates on the owl?
True, if you cant love animals, then you will never be able to respect humans. Animals are pure and innocent creatures. I will never harm an animal! I will not allow anyone to harm an animal if its in my power and controll to prefend it from happening. I can't say i feel completely the same about humans though.
@Swiftpaw Of course, I haven't happened up on any bird bigger than the woodpecker I had found. All I know is that you can see the hole in your basic songbirds when you open their mouth by gently pulling on the tuft under their chin to open their beaks. That's the safest way to open their mouths for feeding or forcefeeding when they won't eat. You have to go over that hole and down into the crop and inject slowly a small amount at a time. The hole near the tongue leads to the trachea.
Um, but isn't owls supposed to be feeded with mice or rats or something like that, because they need their bones and fur (sorry, if word isn't correct) as much as meat?
@Swiftpaw Ah! I must look this up. Thanks for this invaluable information. I succeeding in rehabilitating the woodpecker we had with a proper diet and the release went well, but I've always wondered what to feed the other birds and much larger ones as well. Inject it straight into the Ventriculus you say? What's that? And you say the young owls can be fed chopped up mice? I must take notes. I'm making a book on what to feed wild birds & their care so I can look up the info in case.
Like snakes, bird's windpipe, believe it or not is under the tongue. It is a hole under the tongue where the vet would place a tube for oxygen/anesthesia during surgery. Weird, but that's where I heard it was at and so I see in some pics as well.
Most beautiful wee thing I've ever seen. Well done to you for looking after the little guy.
I love owls so much, thank you so much for doing such a kindness to a sweet little owl. You are wonderful people and I commend you!
