      Many did not go silent and what is good to see about the present protests and actions is how inclusive they are. It was my hope that when it came to the pipeling protests that no factions or turf wars developed, but they appeared to have in some cases. We are learning as we go and the more inclusive these actions are, the stronger and more effective they will be.

      Well, like African Americans they erased y’all stories and voices from the history books so it’s very very hard for black people to understand how y’all stories connect to ours. Historically, we have had similar trajectories in the US so we should be fighting on the same side, however, as BLM pushes for change those things positively impact other minorities to stand up and make changes that impact their groups.

      Well that's true, however it never would have been done, because it should have been done years ago. They had their chance to do the right thing, and they blew it.
      What would have had to happen in order for all those statues to be taken down professionally, without pomp and ceremony, then preserved in a Civil War museum? And which Civil War museum?
      There were a lot of statues. Would there be a wing of a Civil War museum called The Daughters of the Confederacy's Effort To Keep Black People in Their Place Thereby Preserving The Superiority Of The White Race After The Confederacy Lost The Civil War wing?
      There is a very good board game called Freedom: The Underground Railroad
      The objective is to get as many slaves up north to freedom and away from slave catchers as you can. I submit you can learn more about the Civil War playing that game than you can looking at any statue, in or out of a museum. Hell, leave the Confederate ones there, tagged and broken as a symbol of liberation and rejection of their failed ideology. For as long as they stood to let black people know who was still in charge, let them lie broken on the ground with a plaque on the pedistal they once stood on detailing their real legacy (that of being put up as symbols of terror long after the war dispite Lee wanting no such monuments to be built) as a message to white supremacists that they are _Not_ in charge anymore and never will be again.
      You want to respect history, you don't create symbols glorifying oppression, you create symbols that (much like the Vietnam memorial) say "this was a blight on our history and we remember it to honor the _victims_ and to remind ourselves _never_ to repeat it" and if a statue is a symbol, so is it's destruction and desecration.
      Broken statues are cheap and effective memorials to the victims of slavery, segregation, and other forms of racist oppression.

    • @lachlanbell8390
      @lachlanbell8390 4 года назад

      @James Venner I'm somewhat confused by the last part of your comment, "This pursuit of equality will lead to nothing but further bloodshed & ultimately a failed country". Is that meant to be in reference to Brazil's "pursuit of equality"? That sounds off when the people purportedly pursuing "equality" and in the US, but I've seen your comments in multiple threads on this video and your views very much seem to be in alignment with the mobs currently trying to enact a cultural revolution, so hard to reconcile those positions.
      Beau seems to have selective vision here and wants to pretend it's just confederate monuments, when the day before this video the black bloc mobs were tearing down statues of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Ulysses K. Grant. This isn't really about slavery - that's the excuse given to get well-meaning lefties on board - but the people in those black blocs tearing down statues are predominantly white. They're Communist revolutionaries who think the USA is uniquely evil and must be torn down to make room for the utopia.
      They say it's about removing monuments to slavery, but when they're tearing down monuments to the people responsible for ending slavery it's obviously not about that. It's about erasing the country's cultural history to create a "blank slate" for the culture they want to bring in. This is what Mao did in China, it's what ISIS did in the territory they controlled, and it's what Winston Smith did in the Ministry of Truth. This is what the term "book burning" means, it's not about literal books, it's about destroying cultural heritage. Down the memory hole, as it were.
      This isn't a new phenomenon, and we know where it leads. That's why I'm confused by you saying "This pursuit of equality will lead to nothing but further bloodshed & ultimately a failed country" - that statement is directly applicable to the cultural revolutionaries in the US right now, but your other comments appear to be supportive of this 21st century book burning endeavour. Can you help me clarify what your intended meaning was?

We're at our worst when we let the fruits of our original sin hold sway over our actions. It's the history that gave us the Bill of Rights and the Declaration that all men are created equal. It's also the history that gave us colonialism, slavery, and Jim Crow. American history is complicated. At no time in human history was this a perfect nation. At no time has it been equally just. It will likely never get there. Not 100%. But when we strive to make it better, it can get better. To move forward we need to be able to recognize what we're moving away from by knowing where we've been. To move forward we need to recognize the injustices of the present and strive to fix them.

      @joe schmoe The did not sell off black people to slavery. Black folks in Africa had tribes and each tribe was an enemy to another tribe. They had wars just like everyone else. Hence Shaka Zulu era. He decided to befriend some white folks to get what his tribe needed. Each tribe was like a Colony. Each tribe had a King and A Queen Just like America have friends and allies. They aligned themselves with white settlers to get supplies for Their tribe. You know the saying the enemy of my enemy is my friend. And they allowed the settlers to do whatever they wanted with their enemies. But truth be told. Another dark history in America is that All Black people did not arrive over here on slave ships from Africa. Some black folks were already here on this soil. Black folks Migrated out of Africa several centuries before Eropean settlers made it over here. But they found Copper colored people with fancy head dress or Indian attire. My ancestors The Indigenous people. Trail of tesrs were my people. America paid white people to take over the land owned by Black Indigenous families. They sold Indian land to Europeans for 5 dollars. To keep from paying Black folks reparations from stealing our land here and later for slavery. The Five dollar imposter Indians White Europeans Took over the Indian names and tribes. Some of them had black slaves and started to mix with them or had babies with them And They had multicolored folks in the tribes. They called them Mulato Indians or Mixed breed. Or Red Indians. But Indians were originally Copper colored Indians. So technically America belongs to Black Indigenous people. So this is our land from the beginning of time anyway.

George Washington named the district of land he was told to map out for the city that would become the capital off the Potomac between Maryland and Virginia. That's historical. And anyone with a Latin last name would have been one of the first to arrive and invade and be granted land grants by the Spanish monarchs. Land grants that can be traced back to 1716. The Spaniards were here longer than British. Also a piece of history, a good portion of the Southwestern Territories from Texas to California belonged to Mexico at one time. The land grants were to encourage settlements in the West and were also offered to the native Americans in the NM area and were used as a buffer between the settlers and the indigenous people.

      @music41533- You can remember history just as well in a museum. These statues represent individuals that didn't think all men were created equal and did everything in their power to maintain the status quo.
      In museums are where they belong.

      Everything is history, but public statues are generally set up to celebrate the life of a historical figure. The question is, is it a life worth celebrating?

    • @chrisboyd3540
      @chrisboyd3540 4 года назад +1

      @music41533 All around the world, the majority of statues are not actually important historic people, or commemorating important historic actions. More often it's part of the legacy of some rich idiot that wanted a statue, so he donated some of his wealth, or it's actually a response to current affairs - as per the statues of confederate generals erected during the civil rights era. And of course there's a metric shit-ton of statues of dictators - I don't recall anyone responding to the pictures of the toppling of Sadam Hussein's statue by complaining that we were "forgetting everything about the past". Also good luck telling everyone in eastern europe that they should put back all the statues of Stalin!

      @James Venner your speech lends itself to a conservative viewpoint. Unless you are Independent and equally critical of both parties, but from your wording I highly doubt that.

      @James Venner 'Right-Wing' are the nation sad...Guess that means only Southeners are the nation because most are Right wing. However, people in the South are ignorant and poor as fuck, they voted for Trump because he promised to build a wall on the border like that's going to help them in any way, when corporations will move their business to Mexico and China. They also take EBT and as much help as they can get from the gov, that's socialism, yet they say they hate socialism. That is America? A bunch of racist ignorant Southerners? Yes, half is that and the other IS a freaking shopping mall full of zombies, wake up and see the reality around you.

    I was a tour guide in Boston for twenty years. Thank you for addressing these issues. Most often statues, monuments, plaques are highly inaccurate and reflect issues important to people who erected them. Most often the people who the statues etc. represent never intended nor appreciated the reverence given to kings, religious leaders, and mythological figures. Our country has never been great. "Greatness" was never the goal of this experiment. Thank you.

    This sounds like what the daughters of the confederate was trying to do which was recreate history in a way that would overshadow the truth.btw beau im dig'n the shirt

    • @dudeman5303
      @dudeman5303 4 года назад

      Exactly! They are singlehandedly who got the "myth of the lost cause" popularized and stirred up glorification of the confederacy and the mythology. They were the center of it all, including a huge amount of the crazy monuments

    • @evilsharkey8954
      @evilsharkey8954 4 года назад

      Taking these statues and plaques down doesn’t erase history. It just scrubs off the whitewash slathered on by the Daughters.

    • @mattja52
      @mattja52 4 года назад

      I wouldn't say recreate but manipulate would be more appropriate. The Daughters of the Confederacy were the mistresses of propaganda. Genteel in their manner and scrupulous in their intent. The female gender is not the weaker sex. A case study in propaganda.
