When I was in the fourth or fifth grade, I started asking questions about the meaning of the words pledge, and allegiance. Because outside of the pledge, these words are not often times used. At least no in grade school. Once I learned their meaning, I found that I was unable to repeat the pledge, despite standing and appearing to participate. I could not get past the idea that it was wrong to instruct children to make what amounted to a life long promise of loyalty to any nation when these children had no means by which to compare where they live with anywhere else on the earth. Your version of "I pledge allegiance, to liberty and justice for all." Now that's an idea I could have gotten behind and have been proud to have recited to this day. I think anyone that is actually patriotic would uphold the ideals of liberty and justice for all because that is what the true spirit of America. We are 'a more perfect Union' which implies we are not done creating 'the perfect Union' and leaves room for that revision. We must all strive to create a better place for everyone and anyone that stands against that cause CANNOT love America, the Constitution, liberty or justice and is therefore a fake patriot. Anyone that tries to deprive anyone else of those fundamentally American ideals of justice and/or liberty is NOT an American patriot, it's that simple.

It will be a lovely day when people realize that saying God Bless Us All in general without realizing that the ones they say it to might not necessarily believe in God, it really is pushing the boundaries of being intrusive and to some even rude. Would you like if someone had a strong belief you don't agree with and have them end conversations with a saying that only they can appreciate yet one that you strongly disagree with or even just don't subscribe to. Example of sayings such as Gays Will Save Us All, Allah Will Bless Us All, or how about The Devil Will Help Us All. Not saying you are against those things but I can guarantee it is something that you wouldn't like if people gave blanket statements to you under the assumption they are somehow helping you when in reality it is something you have strong beliefs against or even take offense to. When it comes down to it, you don't have to push your beliefs on people and try to think of the feeling you would feel if it was flipped the other way. We need to be inclusive as a society and by conversing in a way that includes and does not give a "this is my tribe not yours" feeling. We could move forward and progress so much faster.

@@BeauoftheFifthColumn I was raised to focus on the Idea, the flag only got in the way during my military career. Great message either way , I always appreciate Knowledge.
It all needs to stop. Back in my day we weren't taught to worship a flag or a song or the president. We were taught to respect them but not worship them. And all those idiots out there were never taught flag etiquette or maybe they just tuned their minds out. If people from the 1950s the 1960s maybe even the 1970s could come forward in time and see how the flag was being treated disrespectfully they'd be shocked and they probably wouldn't have any children
Flag etiquette. It should be raised in the morning as soon as the sun comes up and taken down in the evening as the sun is going down. It must never touch the ground and it should be properly folded in a tri-fold which is just like what you see soldiers giving War widows. It should never fly in the rain. And a torn or ragged flag should be replaced immediately. If an important person dies it should be flown at half mast. This was not flag worship this was flag respect. Today's flag worshippers don't care how much the damn thing is torn up they let it stay out all night come rain or sleet or snow and yet they're screaming about what great Patriots they are. What they actually are is totally disrespecting this country and what it really stands for. Thank you Beau, you got me thinking about this whole thing on a much deeper level!
Great video, Beau! I was just talking about this subject (the pledges revisions) the other day. You are a light in such dark times. Keep doing what you do, I appreciate it.
Ya know, I suppose it MAY be in conflict with the First Amendement, but I'm not sure it IS. Allow me to think 'out loud,' to further discussion. The 1st Amendment begins, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free excercise thereof..." so my question is, does the argument that there is a conflict rest on the premise that the phrase "under God" respects an establishment of religion? What do we make of the phrase, "Congress shall enact no law"? I could totally be persuaded here.........present solid textual analysis, or make a persuasive argument. ;) [By the way, I'm not monotheistic, so I have no 'horse in this race,' as they say.]

Beau, I love you man! I pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all. It's the only way I will say the pledge from this day forward. How could it possibly offend anyone? Oh wait, I forgot...
When I was in Law School, I got ready for a fight over Texas v. Johnson (the case that said flag burning is protected under the 1st Amendment). My main argument was "you burn a flag, you burn a piece of cloth. You ban burning the flag, and you destroy the very values it stands for. One of these is replaceable. The other is not. One of these disrespects the flag. The other makes it worthless." (There was more to it, but it would basically be citing a bunch of other cases we had to read in support of this). Hilariously enough, the entire right wing division of that class stayed silent other then a stupid, token "if you burn the flag, you're against democracy" that was barely worth a single line in response, much to the surprise of the professor and a few people who apparently wanted to see me take down the right wing of the class.
If you are making the pledge yourself then no one else needs to see it. Doing the pledge together, in public, is a way to reinforce the "group think". If someone doubts the consensus but sees everyone else still going along with the concensus the it causes one to doubt themselves rather than the concensus.
The idea that an oath of fealty removes your ability to revoke consent to be governed sure is a convenient notion for a government. I'd say you're released from the pledge anytime the institution betrays an ideological promise. Contracts are not unilateral. So pretty much no one can be reasonably said to be bound by it currently. Or at least, very few.
@@anonymous.caller If you mean me, yeah, I'm aro ace. But I more meant infractions of the social contact on the behalf of the government are currently daily and ongoing.

@@JakeMcNaughton I like to tell pledge fanatics that my father didn't say the pledge when he was in school because no one in Ohio did at that time. It's *not* a tradition the founding fathers started after writing the constitution. While the pledge was first written in 1892, and I think the boy scouts started picking it up along the way, it wasn't really used in public schools until WWII and only really took off during the cold war and the addition of "under god." People were plenty patriotic before being forced to do a pledge and salute every morning in school.
Which is totally illogical, considering the USA was founded as a secular nation to begin with laws based on non-religious principles. Not to mention the earliest Christian church practiced communism. No, it was added because theocratic Christians saw a ripe opportunity to foist their god on the rest of the country.

Beau is on a roll, nailing it, direct and on point, removing all the fluff and getting to the heart of the matter. I pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all.
He on fire tonight. 😅
Beau! I will be a shirt with that slogan from your site.
Tight enough to be a bumper sticker.
The sky just cleared, a rainbow is shining, and a choir of Angel's is singing. Why? Someone just spoke truth on social media. That's not just a thought you shared, Beau. That is a fact.
It may be just a thought, but this one is spectacular.

I never get tired of his "just thoughts"
I pledge allegiance to Liberty and Justice for All! Thank you once again Beau.
TBH the whole pledge of allegiance deal has always been incredibly weird. Indoctrination of children at its most blatant.
Nine words. It’s perfect. My son stopped standing for the Pledge at his high school the day after Trump was elected. Over a third of his class joined him. He knew. And so did I. Let’s start working towards liberty and justice for all again this November.
I agree wholeheartedly.
I think it's imperative we quit fetishizing the symbols, and a start upholding of the actual values those symbols represent.
Made me cry!! Deep thoughtfulness
Thank you for all of your hard work. If more people thought like you, the world would be a better place.
Outstanding!! Love this! I will forever think of this whenever I say the pledge.
But if they did that, how would they rile up the masses with hatred, racism and bigotry?
We wouldn't! And wouldn't that be wonderful?!?
Fear of the other is a natural part of the human animal, it used to be small tribes knocking the shit out of each other then they formed alliances against a different other and on and on. We'll shake it off eventually when the alien armada arrives. It's 2020 so I knocked on wood just to be on the safe side.
You guys are missing the all important point to end all points..."but, but, her emails, you guys! Her emails!!!" 😵
Sarcasm 😄
@@elram2649 You think it's sarcasm, but Trump still has his crowds chanting 'Lock her up!'.
@@chezmoi42 , Trump exhorting his supporters to chant "lock her up" is classic psychological projection; being locked up is the thing he both most fears and most deserves.
Beau, if YOU ever run for high Office, you have MY vote. Thank you for this video...❤👍👍
“Indivisible” I scratch my head when I hear that word. People still recite that word but yet we are divided. If the pledge were a mission statement we would be failing.
Does it strike you as at all odd that they chose that particular point where it says "one nation indivisible" to insert "under God?" The act divides the phrase by ramming a God into the issue.
I pledge alliegence to liberty and justice FOR ALL! Brilliant Beau. You would make a great American leader.
I remember when the pledge was changed to add “Under God”. It still sounds odd to me.
This for a country which claims to separate church from state.
Gambier Massive -Hell, yeah. We can’t all be young progressives. Some of us grew old.
Gambier Massive - do you think Beau knows?
McCarthy.
Please share your story. The republic stands for all when it is secular and only then.
I was literally talking to my boss about this 2 hours ago. Love it.
I Pledge Allegiance: To Liberty, EQUALITY, and Justice For All
"The Pledge was supposed to be quick and to the point. Bellamy designed it to be recited in 15 seconds. As a socialist, he had initially also considered using the words equality and fraternity but decided against it, knowing that the state superintendents of education on his committee were against equality for women and African Americans." (Wikipedia: Pledge of Allegiance:Origins:Bellamy pledge)
Seems redundant. Can you even have justice for all without equality.
Beau, you sir a person for whom I hold genuine esteem and respect.
Now that's a pledge for which I can stand.
*Oh I LOVE that "I pledge allegiance to Liberty and Justice for all."**Well done, Beau.*
"... liberty and justice FOR ALL"
[note: the following comment has been made obsolete by en edit to the comment above. I leave it here for thread continuity, unedited save for adding this note up front.]
Then I hope you won't disparage me (and I don't mean to disparage you!) for pointing out that it's liberty and justice. Liberty and freedom sounds redundant to me. Otherwise, I agree!
@@DavidLindes lol. You are right; it is redundant. I must have had one of those weird psychological glitches.......I'm gonna edit it, now. ;)
Cheri Ann real patriots criticise the wrongs they see in government & point out inequality. It is the first step to improving them. Only fakes claiming to be patriots would denounce & attack those that would advance the cause of liberty & equality .
👏👏👏👏
Well said my internet friend!
Absolutely! A perfect pledge for all humans, all countries. Thank you, Beau.

Perfect, brilliant... glad I found your channel a few months ago’
Universal. Yes. I will stand. I pledge allegiance for liberty and justice for all.
Beau, Bro I’ve really been checking you out on here and man I’ve like your channel from day one. We are from 2 totally different backgrounds, but this is what makes America. Keep up the good work. This is real shit..Stay focused Beau.. God Bless Us All..
Welcome to the club of internet people who want to think about the issues. We are looking forward to any civil discourse you bring. 💙
Hi Rank One, We're all thinking together.
@@SLEEPYJK I take your point and agree to an extent but perhaps you could agree that the sentiment expressed by Rank One can be taken in the spirit obviously intended.
You don't know how much I love this!!! ❤❤❤
I like to echo the late great George Carlin's sentiment, "I leave symbols to the symbol minded".
Didn't he also say something to the effect of if you have a good enough product, you don't need to advertise? Or was that Stanhope?
Liberty and justice for all, Beau you nailed it again this brother is amazing.
But that Umbrella is still allowing some to get soaking wet. Just a thought
But what if we focused on that idea instead of a flag?
@@tanawilliams7498 Not to mention all the flag shirts and other merchandise, which they seem to flaunt, which is a violation of the flag code.
Great video, Beau! I was just talking about this subject (the pledges revisions) the other day. You are a light in such dark times. Keep doing what you do, I appreciate it.
It's the "under God" part I always had trouble with. Even as a kid I could see that it was in conflict with the first amendment.
Glad you always had a problem with that part. Now you're empowered to have a problem with some additional parts, and just boil it down to essence.
It's that separation of church and state thing isn't it, I always found that odd.
Orwellian Horseman Yep!💯
Orwellian Horseman of the Apocalypse
What about the national anthem talking about not giving refuge for runaway slaves?
Now that is a pledge I'd be happy to have my daughter use.
You're a legend & brought my fam together. Thank you 💕
I wish he could do the same for mine.
@@saafewolf69 maybe he can, my dad really understood him but I had to wait for the right moment and for my father, that's the military. For my mother it's children and safety of women. Now they weren't Trump folks because they hated how he treated women. They are traditional conservatives and my dad has a very apolitical expression, he's registered independent & doesn't tell people how he votes but he's deeply tradition. He is very "triggered" by the new anti-soldier narrative he related to BLM and Beau's presentation really resonated with him. This was years of fighting over conservativism and support of things I thought actively weakened the rep. Party and we're regressive. They can see those things through Beau. I pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all.....I LIKE IT! as you say this is what matters!
This is beautiful. So simple, so powerful. One of your best.
Beau, I love you man! I pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all. It's the only way I will say the pledge from this day forward. How could it possibly offend anyone? Oh wait, I forgot...
"Just a thought" has made an impact on many of us. That is one hell of a thought and your revision is what matters more. I love it.
Wow, that is so much clearer. I Pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all.
I will pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all!
I've always wondered exactly how many times one must pledge "allegiance" until it finally took.
@@anonymous.caller None taken, I'm just dry and wry. :)

Perfect. I pledge allegiance to Liberty and justice for all.
The idea of liberty and justice is what matters. That's what I pursue.
They make us do it in school, so just to spite them, I always label us as "The *Imperial* States of America"
I never took my hat off, and I got in a fight with some kid bc of it 😂
"I pledge alligence to the flag of the Imperial States of America, one nation, under RA"
Imperial States of America??!!.... soooooo, every 4 years, it's the same royal family dictating to you who you work for ( you do work... don't you ?) and what you're allowed to say and who you get to chill with ? Man, the Imperial Family must have a boat load of money to waste on the ruse of campgaiging every "election"......guess they like the diversion ?
And that is where the brainwashing starts.
fritz Pelayo yup, it's pretty much like that. Not exactly, but close enough. The two puppet parties are just a distraction to keep us all fighting so we ignore the men behind the curtain.
Couldn’t agree more my fellow human being!

pledging allegiance to flags was a big mistake, it was better before
@@JakeMcNaughton I like to tell pledge fanatics that my father didn't say the pledge when he was in school because no one in Ohio did at that time.
Beau, I agree 100%. If we don't have liberty and justice for all, we don't have anything.
Beau, you nailed it, I think lots of people would like that new pledge on a T-shirt, just a thought.
For much of my adult life, I've been unable to earnestly recite the Pledge of Allegiance, but this pledge I can actually get behind.
Under God was added when the country was worried about Communists.
Which is totally illogical, considering the USA was founded as a secular nation to begin with laws based on non-religious principles. Not to mention the earliest Christian church practiced communism.
No, it was added because theocratic Christians saw a ripe opportunity to foist their god on the rest of the country.
I wish everyone I loved watched this channel.
This is the very subject I discussed with my uncle recently. We had been talking about the BLM movement and I was explaining it. Being the intelligent man he is, he got it and understood my statement about not being willing to stand for the anthem because we aren't the land of the free nor will I say the pledge until there is liberty and justice for all. But now, after hearing this, I'd be willing to say the revised version.
