Can't talk about Danny Brown, professor, without giving us the Atrocity Exhibition video. Danny got into too much debt for you not to review that masterpiece!
Danny Brown was actually the one that came up with the name for “Lean Beef Patty” jpegmafia had no idea who she was. And on the Danny Brown Show, jpegmafia said that Danny Brown was the Reddit and 4chan guy.
Hey Professor Skye, I loved the 404 and headache connection because even the 404 part acts as a double entendre for the clinically online aesthetic of the album- 404 ERROR NOT FOUND could have been a perfect title for this album. Great review!! Love the content as always.
I couldn’t recommend Atrocity Exhibition by Danny enough because it takes that coke rap and explicitly states how dark of a pit he’s in. One of the darkest hip hop albums I’ve heard with some of the most insane production, like you have to wonder how he’s this talented to rap over these beats. But he also does say “lick the clit and she did the Macarena” so I have no idea how you’ll feel. If you haven’t checked it out,it’s an essential 2010s rap album

This team up came out of nowhere for me, only heard about a week ago from a clip on Danny’s podcast, but I’m so glad it happened. These guys represent some of the most interesting stuff going on in hip hop, and fuck does it hit
Professor Skye, The only feature on the album (on Kingdom Hearts Key) is redveil, not red devil! He is a very good rap artist who I think has a lot of potential and I think he’s still only like 19. But it’s redVEIL!
about the title “scaring the hoes”, i liked peggy’s explanation in an interview stating that the term is often the first criticism thrown at black art. by acknowledging that this album does “scare the hoes” in an ironic way, it takes this automatic dismissal of their art away before it can be thrown at them so that the only criticisms left are just about the music. in regards to a tour, danny said at his recent sxsw performance that he’s looking to get some help for his mental health, so it might be a while. jpegmafia usually DJs his own shows by playing music off his laptop so probably no live sp404 performance
Haha that’s gay lol scaring the hoes gotta just be a goof reference to “stop playing mf doom in the whip you’re scaring the hoes mfs not tryna hear 60s cartoons on the way to the gas station” 😂
it’s literally not the first criticism. lmao. hip hop is the most popular genre for women globally, especially in america, without question, and it definitely does not “scare them” 😂😂😂. abrasive music agitates people in general, whether it’s this abrasive hip hop, or death metal or noise music from caucasian artists. literally has nothing to do with race. 😅😅🤡🤡 you absolute clowns will be the death of us all making everything about race and victim mentality.
almost double the album length ☠. But deserved because the amount of legendary known and unknown samples, Peggy + Danny talking their shit, and the standout production. They say Wu-Tang for the children but this is for my ADHD adult ass.
Holy shit i didnt know this was made w a 404! My biggest gripe w the album was the mix. But the texture of the album make so much more sense to me now.
I prefer Danny being deeper in the mix. His voice is highly pitched so it's better to have him blend in with the instrumental so his IMMACULATE flow compliments the beat.
Danny Brown as well as JPEGMAFIA is a top five rap artist of all time to me, and there's more depth to his vulgarity than you may think. I think his best album is Atrocity Exhibition(though not by much) but a great album to go back to would be XXX. It's a sort of exagerrated conceptual album where he turns up the vulgarity and substance abuse and ignorance to the max, only to flip it on it's head and writes super introspectively on the last third/quarter of the album about the downsides of these addictions, the factors which influenced him to turn out this way and his concerns for his future. It makes for a really great and cinematic listen(the production is incredible too of course) and it's full of "bangers" from front to back. Great review as always, keep it up!
Always great hearing your take on hip hop. Just to make sure you’re on point w/ your information. 808s as referenced in modern music are usually just the second kick drum of the roland 808 at maximum transient length sampled and pitched. 808 hats and snares do occasionally pop up in trap, but when a modern producer talks 808s they’re talking bass. Nowadays many of them aren’t even samples of the 808 kick, just low pitch sine waves w/ long transients and maybe a small pitch envelope at the beginning (think of an electronic kick drum in slow motion).
We all lived through our edgier phases. However, I'm 38 with 3 kids and un-ironically love Death Grips. It is possible lol. I'm actually seeing them in August and HOPEFULLY can see Peggy and Danny soon! As far as Danny's content, I would suggest Atrocity Exhibition for his most "tasteful" content.
Loved seeing all that Smiths merchandise on the wall during Professor Skye's view inspection. I would also love to hear some of your commentary on The Smiths! Great video as always.

this album is what convinced me to drive an hour and a half to trade my octatrack for an SP-404 mkii. I fall in love with this album a little but more with each listen. it's almost like the Madvillainy of this decade. I hope it's as influential as Madvillaint was. by the way, from what I understand, most of Fentanyl Tester is just a different section of milkshake, but I didn't consider that the Mii Channel was what those chord stabs may have come from. I'll have to look into that
I get the desire to bring up Kanye (therefore carti) in reference to the mainstream being okay with experimental rap. But the comparison that WLR is of the same quality as Peggy’s discography feels arbitrary. Peggy and Kanye feel like the better comparison, and one of those artists is on his way out and the other is forging his legacy right in front of our eyes. Thanks for the review Professor
never would’ve thought that a running gag from a NFL Draft podcast would lead to me (macedonian-german who never stepped a foot an US ground) understanding one of your obscure references you‘re dropping throughout. One of the co-hosts of the NFL Stock Exchange went to Albany and they reference the phrase „great day to be a great dane“ every so often
When I found out that Peggy's last name was Hendrix I automatically compared him to Jimi Hendrix because they both are musical geniuses and I didn't even remember that both of them served time in the military. History really does seem to repeat itself! I hope Jpeg lives a long life though, so we can get this music for the foreseeable future!
great review but i feel like you didn’t fully understand the context behind the scaring the hoes title/track. it’s been a thing for a while where people say rappers like MF DOOM, danny brown, griselda, etc. scare the hoes just because their music is “experimental/different”. you seemed to have interpreted it as them sort of bragging about how different they are, which i don’t think is the case. I think it’s just them criticizing the people who constantly count them out. I think it’s also great commentary on the state of hiphop and how rappers’ values have changed over time, comparing newer rappers to business men who don’t actually want to be MCs, not because they aren’t capable of being MCs, but because they don’t want to be MCs.
Great review as always. Been waiting on this collab with bated breath since I first heard it announced. Would also love to hear your thoughts on the new Liturgy album if you get the chance.
Great video as always, really curious to hear your thoughts on atrocity exhibition , it does have the things you say aren’t to your taste, but the album is about the other side of all that addiction, drugs, and sex. it’s about the downfalls of it and all the problems it creates, his “downward spiral”
Prof, if you're gonna go back and check older projects, I'd say it's a fair shake to listen to DOOM as well as I'd argue he has a lot of influence as well especially to a lot of the artists you've reviewed "I dedicate this mix to Subroc, the hip-hop Hendrix" his lyrics to Kon Karne, dedicated to his late brother DJ Subroc
Dude we’ve been saying, but you gooootta listen to Atrocity Exhibition by Danny brown. I feel like that and XXX would maybe change your mind on his style as I’ve heard you say a couple times it’s the lyrics. I feel AE would be everything you’re looking for from him
Atrocity Exhibition will probably change your perspective on Danny’s lyrics. I see why they would be “not to your taste” but that album would probably recontextualise it alot for you
Also interesting that you compare JPEG to Hendrix because on his song the 27 club JPEG actually opens the song with “I’m Jimi Hendrix baby I’m Jimi Hendrix.”
