Leonardo ASN it was common to only hire, or to teach people THAT voice. And as Billybob said, the equipment definitely helped make that sound. It was the “right” way to broadcast, so people continued to talk like that on air.

I don't think the alien invasion storyline by itself is what matters, it's how Orson orchestrated this whole ordeal and fooled so many people using an outlet that was believed to be live and true, we can't deny that it was a clever move and that's why we're talking about him now and not the original war of the worlds

Although my grandmother has forgotten this story, as she's been getting more spacey, the story she told my dad is that her family were listening to Edgar Bergen's ventriloquist show that happened at the same time. However, after that was over, War of the Worlds was being broadcast, and they had wanted to catch as much of it as they could. They had heard about it, and Welles was a promising new talent that they'd already been impressed with. The following morning, when they saw in the newspaper that there was panic in response to War of the Worlds, her family read it and thought "wow, some people are really dumb."

Orson Welles is an underrated storytelling god. He was so convincing with just his voice that he convinced half the US that aliens were actually invading despite warning them. Then he literally makes the best movie ever created(Citizen Kane)in the 40s(see other movies of the era-other than westerns, some avant garde films and Bridge on the River Kwai, most were pretty bad). Oh, and he STARED in the film, giving convincing performances for the same character over a span of a lifetime(the character's lifetime)

I’ve always been fascinated by this story of Orson’s broadcast. The War of the Worlds was one of my favourite books when I was younger, and I remember talking about it with my grandparents. My grandma told me how she’d heard about Orson’s broadcast shortly after it aired, and the, in her words, “waves of panic. People out in their porches with shotguns, protecting their homes.” I later learned that these reports were exaggerated, but the fact even my grandparents, living in Wales, heard about the whole thing not long after it happened was amazing to me.
What’s also interesting is that, even as far back as the 30’s, what were the “traditional” forms of media were affected and threatened by new technologies and methods of reaching an audience. Newspapers losing out to radio, and capitalising on any negativity of this new-fangled device that stole their audience, still happens now. TV networks vs Streaming Services, programming vs RUclips, the parallels of how established forms of media give way to the new can still be drawn.
Fantastic video, great insight and explanation of one of my favourite events in broadcast history!

It has elements of an ARG. It will have certainly played a part in the history of them too. But I wouldn't call it one.
The first official ARG I believe was for Stephen Spielberg's movie A.I. in 2001.
Everything before the 21st century tends to be up for debate on whether or not they would be classed as an ARG. :)

I a in love with the 1930’s-thru 1940’s. It’s an incredible decade of everything being so new to people. What made people happy, sad or angry is so interesting and so different from how we respond to things today. I’m really thankful you tackled this project and truly brought us into the time period. They made shows happen with little to none of the technology that we rely on today. And the radio stations relied on the genius of people like Orson Welles. Really fantastic, thanks so much for the glimpse into the era, the people and the art of Orson Welles.

There was likely some panic here and there, but nothing like what was reported.
RadioLab did a great episode on it several years ago that talked about it and also some other, later, _War of the Worlds_ radio adaptions that also sparked various levels of hysteria, and also a segment in between that went into how much the original panic may have beem played up by newspapers to try to discredit radio. Unfortunately I'm having some trouble finding it, RadioLab's website seems to have been folded in WNYC Studio's and the page and info lost.
beta.prx.org/stories/105107 this seems to be the RadioLab broadcast, but it doesn't seem to have the bit between parts one and two where they talk about how it was overhyped (that part was not part of the live show, but added later when the person they were talking to contacted them). Either way, it is well worth a listen.
EDIT TO ADD: www.radiolab.org/story/91622-war-of-the-worlds/ this appears to be the original URL if anyone wants to check the Wayback Machine to see if they can find the full episode.

I remember reading about this even being a thing and I was so goddamn excited. This had to have been INCREDIBLE - the creativity, the talent, the believability... It's no wonder this guy ended up making Citizen Kane, he's bloody brilliant!

11:07 I've listened to the full recording dozens of times, I even own a copy on CD. Even now, knowing it was a show, dozens of listens later, those several seconds of dead-air are chilling. Just fucking genius to even think about dead-air for seven or so long seconds. Because, of it was real, it would take time for the studio to realize there's a problem and cut in. It's just perfect.

Fun fact: Ecuador had it worst than this, in Ecuador when the Spanish version was broadcasted throughout the nation, the people of Ecuador had literally lost it and burnt down the radio station in the capital of Ecuador.

See I was always under the impression that the whole "mass panic" thing was a fabrication. In general, even if a lot of people fell for it, most of them didn't FLEE, they kept listening with intrigue and confusion until the show finally gave away that it was fiction. You know, like MOST shows that present themselves as real. I think I read an article about this once that the reports of people who actually PANICKED at the show was probably in the "small handful" range

I think the most probable reaction of the majority would be to look on at their television (or in the time's case, radio) as they try to make sense of what's being told to them.
Usually, the brain would think "this is impossible", preventing most to act as the cogs in their head try to work. Unless someone really saw the incident in front of them and immediately assessed the danger, they'd normally stay still in shock and or curiosity.
