Installed this on a 2018 WRX yesterday with the car on jack stands. First tip, wear gloves! My hands look like I have been in a fight with a cat. Secondly, use a 3/16" punch and don't be shy about hitting it with a hammer. It took me about 30 min to get the pin out once I started hitting it hard enough due to lack of space and leverage. Get the roll pin moving and it becomes easier. Installing the Perrin adapter isn't as easy as it shows either. It is an extremely tight fit and took some prying on the top and bottom of the adapter to get it to seat all the way onto the transmission. Once it did seat, everything was pretty straight forward from there. Start tapping the roll pin into place. You may have to tap the adapter on either side to get it aligned. It took me a few taps on the adapter and the roll pin did the rest. Once it was that close to the hole it centered itself and went in pretty easy. The rear shield will give you some grief when putting the screws back in as well. Put the top rear bolt in first and work your way down. The shield is slightly deflected since it had to be pushed out of the way and putting the top bolt in first will save your hands. I'm not a small guy and have large hands so space was really tight for me. If you have the option of using a lift for this install I would highly recommend it.
To get the roll pin out I used a long 3/16 punch from amazon (Tekton brand) and a palm nailer hooked up to my air compressor. I didnt have a lift, I was on my back with my car jacked up. That pin came out in under 2 min. The entire install took an hour. This trick makes this mod a no brainer!!
+Kyle Dunaway Dude, thank you for your comment, my dad and I were installing this today and we were trying to hammer it out. I took a break, went online and I read this comment. Immediately went out and bought a palm nailer and hooked it up to my dads compressor and VOILA that shit came out like butter, we initially tried an air chisel but it was not working so we ditched the air tools momentarily and continued hammering away. We literally only got 1/4th of the pin out with our hammers.....freakin a! In the end this thing is shifting firmer and shorter which just induces so much confidence.
Installed this recently. If the car isnt brand new your going to need: a torch, sandpaper, penetrating grease, and some leverage to get these parts loose. Another almost essential thing is using a lift as getting any sort of workable angle isnt going to be easy if your crawling under the vehicle. Don't be afraid to really hammer on that roll pin as both it and the bushing will most likely be ceased if you live anywhere where it snows. Overall in combination with the Perrin shifter bushing it creates a very notchy, and direct short throw. If you have any experience driving Hondas, or old school Acrua sports cars then this really is for you. Great addition to any riced out car!
I just read all the comments below about the roll pin. @subispeed need better instructions to get the roll bin out! I went to the hardware store and bought the 3/16 pin punch and started hammering. Does not budge. I'm on rhino ramps. Please help the average DIYer, which is probably 90% of your consumer base!!!
How for the love of god did you get the oem shifter plate off? I took out the pin completely (2 pin construction) and still could not wiggle it out like you did here! I would like to do it myself as a shop is charging way too much to do it.
Did this today and it was a pain, the upper both on the plate was hard to get to, cut myself taking it off, the pin was the worst part took 1 hour of hammering to get it off, had the take the metal support under the tranny off to get more room to hammer it out, would had been easier with a long 3/16 punch, putting the pin back was also a pain wish u guys should how u did it, would have been alot easier with the right tools, also i did it without taking the clip off the shift cable though it was kinda n the way
The product detail page says, "Using a short throw shift lever And adapter will reduce leverage." What does this mean exactly and is it something we need to concern ourselves with? Thanks.
JP Dempsey As with any short throw shifter, you lose some leverage over the shift linkage and the movement between gears becomes stiffer. if I were you i would install it and before you put the bottom plate back hop in and try it out make sure you like it. i had a short throw in my old mustang and i found that the T shifter knob helped give the leverage back. its really not a big deal you may not even notice a difference in leverage in the wrx.
Just done it my instalation, tooks me over two hours, mainly because is really difficult to remove the pin. To instal the pin back was easier for me to do two steps, the big one first and then the smallest one. My only concern now is that when I engage the shifter I cannot see the speeds marked in the cluster unless the car is running over 15mph. Would appreciate any comments on this.
I just installed mine. Big difference. Really nice, however the install is not as easy in practice as it looks like in the video. Especially if your on your back. Definitely use a long 3/16 punch, and use a pry bar to remove the clip off the cable, also gloves are good idea so you won't cut yourself on the rear trans heat shield. Give yourself 2 hours at least. But it's well worth the pain. Thanks for the video it did help!
Hard to say, I was a industrial mechanic for a few years and it was a bit of a struggle. Of course if I the right tools and a lift it would of been different.
I smashed it in a vice to get it back in this sucked so bad. The bracket does not go on the shaft that easy at all I had to sand and file the hole bigger
I was able to do this in an hour or so. Best trick is to take off the transmission cable mount entirely not just the clip. IF your punch is not long enough slide a socket over the punch and put an extension into the socket (your punch is now long enough). Getting the roll pin back in, is the hardest: start the pin into perrins shifter adapter BEFORE getting back under vehicle to install. Secondly, pray like hell when you go to set it your are lined up. Trans wants to shift from 3-4 a lot, be patient. DO NOT START THIS PROJECT thinking you will knock it out in an hour.
+Valery Vodonos No impact gun, that was just sped up which is why it sounded like that. Just a hammer and punch. We put the punch in an extension to get more leverage.
Thanks for that. I did too but since I am working without a lift (just ramps) so getting enough of an angle is hard. Does anybody else here have a recommendation for an impact gun?
they make it look way easier than it is. if you do it on the ground expect slices of your skin to come off when removing bolts. you are welcome. will take 2 days doing it on standard jacks
THIS WILL SAVE YOU A LOT OF TIME go to hardware store and buy a 3/16” punch or a kit with one in it use a heavy hammer and punch on a ratchet extension like in this video. it will take time, any other device you can think of is good, but realize this little bastard takes a while to beat out. now the hardest part for me, getting the adapter put on. for me the part was definitely too small, used a dremel sander and after 2 mins of work it fit like a glove (to help lining up with the hole use a sharpie to draw a line on the adapter and the notch it goes on). this is a pain in the ass, but a dremel and heavy hammer saved my ass (after 2 hours of anger)
Just ordered the part today. But I have another question. I saw some comments online saying that this adapter doesn't have counterweight as other adapter. Is it going to make it hard to shift compared to the OEM one or the Kartboy one?
Installed this w/a lift. Install pretty much sucked. A few tips:use a lift, remove the shift cable bracket to get the punch out easier, also don't be afraid to use a lil sand paper on the inside of the new adapter when sliding on. It does not slide on like in the video. Also grease helps. Difference is pretty noticable.
First of all, either Kevin is Superman or they were extremely lucky with their adapter. No way in hell the adapter just pops on using your hands. Needed to use 100 grit sand paper wrapped around 1/2” drill bit. Pass through a few times and add a little lube it fit like a glove. READ PERRINS INSTRUCTIONS. Use 3/16” punch on the pin or you’ll knock out the inner pin. Also START PIN INSERT before you put the adapter on. Seems pretty straight forward just the adapter was a b**** to get on. Also used a lift made it WAY easier.
I got the boomba short shifter on my 2015 wrx and its flawless, i dunno if i need this or not, the gears are already way shorter. I had the factory short shifter and when i put it in 3rd gear, thats the position the boomba one is but in 5th gear, no more going way to the right anymore
Was one of the first to buy the boomba shifter (first reviewer). You are dead on about product but noticed first and second gear still have side to side play. Wouldnt go back to stock though.
Just an FYI - on my 15 WRX there was a roll pin inside of a roll pin so i had knocked the inner pin out but not the outer so after getting the car lifted and getting a better look a friend of mine noticed there was a second pin still in there. once that second pin came out everything else was straight forward.
michael cox Yes, that is the same case with ours. Which is why it's important to use the appropriate size punch so you don't have to punch out 2 roll pins :(
Warranty can't be voided. However, if the dealer can prove that the damage to the car was a direct result of something you did, they can deny your warranty claim.
great video, but Kevin didn't really show the throw difference. It would be nice to show a before and after maybe side by side. I'm sure it makes a difference I just think it would entice more people to buy it if they could see the difference and know for sure what they are getting. Thanks for the step by step on the install i will probably pick this up in a week or two.
If I am remembering correctly, the pin is actually comprised of two pins so try to take a smaller pin and punch out the middle of the larger pin which should make it easier. - Kevin

Oh man this looks like a pain in the butt to install.

***** would you say this is a possible install by someone w/o mechanic experience
Hard to say, I was a industrial mechanic for a few years and it was a bit of a struggle. Of course if I the right tools and a lift it would of been different.
***** i cant get that pin out of the shifter assembly i feel like my 3/16 pin punch isnt doing anything
A bigger hammer might help. I used one that too small, and it took forever. Hope this helps
I had to resort to using a big flat blade screwdriver.
I would love to see how he put the PIN back into the damn car.
whdee27 looked rough just getting in out
I smashed it in a vice to get it back in this sucked so bad. The bracket does not go on the shaft that easy at all I had to sand and file the hole bigger

Todd Hallsten I marked where the hole is on the part where the shifter sits. Made it much easier. Took me about 45 min. No problem or anything.
That pin is a pain in the ***. Got it to budge with a 3/16th punch and hammer and that's about it. What impact gun did you guys use?
+Valery Vodonos No impact gun, that was just sped up which is why it sounded like that. Just a hammer and punch. We put the punch in an extension to get more leverage.

will take 2 days doing it on standard jacks
+motomuscl3 All depends on what tools you have and your mechanical ability.
+SubiSpeed most people watching these videos won't have all tools and probably aren't the best mechanics. all in all, the video is still helpful
Lmao in 2 days you could just remove the whole trans and put it back in
THIS WILL SAVE YOU A LOT OF TIME
go to hardware store and buy a 3/16” punch or a kit with one in it
use a heavy hammer and punch on a ratchet extension like in this video. it will take time, any other device you can think of is good, but realize this little bastard takes a while to beat out.

I'm really interested in this part but I don't really have a garage. I wonder where do most people do this type of DIY job that requires car lifting?
Shuxun Cao it can be done in the driveway on jack stands
Just ordered the part today. But I have another question. I saw some comments online saying that this adapter doesn't have counterweight as other adapter. Is it going to make it hard to shift compared to the OEM one or the Kartboy one?
I did this install. The shifter makes a much louder clink during shifts! That bolt above the drive shaft was a pain!
I'm taking mine out for that reason, shifts sound clunky, super nasty
Installed this w/a lift. Install pretty much sucked. A few tips:use a lift, remove the shift cable bracket to get the punch out easier, also don't be afraid to use a lil sand paper on the inside of the new adapter when sliding on. It does not slide on like in the video. Also grease helps. Difference is pretty noticable.
for the adapter do u have to remove 3 bolts or only two in order to release the stock shifter plate
I'm confused, what is this changing if I was to still use the stock rod? How does it make the shift shorter?
It changes the distance between the two pivot points.
First of all, either Kevin is Superman or they were extremely lucky with their adapter. No way in hell the adapter just pops on using your hands. krinkin99 Have you taken a look at the Perrin Shifter Stop to get rid of that side to side play?
www.subispeed.com/perrin-shifter-stop-2015-wrx
How do you move your hands so fast? Woah.
What is the torque specs on all the nuts and bolts removed?
Will this give a nice click sound when shifting into gear?
Is it necessary to remove the far 2nd 12mm bolt (for the shield)? wish I had smaller hands....
+CivicFB6 Yes otherwise with the shield in the way, you won't have enough room to get the oem shifter plate out.
@subispeed how did you get the OEM adapter off so easily? I punched out the pin but it wont budge, at all.
Going through that now how did you get your off
Just an FYI - on my 15 WRX there was a roll pin inside of a roll pin so i had knocked the inner pin out but not the outer so after getting the car lifted and getting a better look a friend of mine noticed there was a second pin still in there. once that second pin came out everything else was straight forward.

+a nog 3/16"
just bought a 2018 wrx. does this void any warranties?
Warranty can't be voided. However, if the dealer can prove that the damage to the car was a direct result of something you did, they can deny your warranty claim.
do you reuse the same pin? or does the kit come with a new one?
+Adi Bueno You reuse the stock pin.
great video, but Kevin didn't really show the throw difference. It would be nice to show a before and after maybe side by side. I'm sure it makes a difference I just think it would entice more people to buy it if they could see the difference and know for sure what they are getting. Chris Williams Unfortunately, since we have the Boomba short shifter installed it is very difficult to show the differences.
I see, your wrx must have a crazy short throw
Did you guys do any pro tuning or just the Cobb maps? It would be interesting to see your gains.
Can this be coupled with the Boomba Short Throw Shifter to produce even shorter shifts? (60% less?)
Kian Palmer Yes we have both installed in the video.
If you have the stock sti short shift kit, can you forgo this shift adapter?
I also have the stock sti short shift kit and was wondering if this will be able to be coupled with that as well.
I really barely have any play and once its in gear i dont wiggle it around anyway
Somehow, my pin in the shifter plate got stuck. Won't budge at all with the 3/16 punch. Any solutions?
If I am remembering correctly, the pin is actually comprised of two pins so try to take a smaller pin and punch out the middle of the larger pin which should make it easier. - Kevin
what they don't tell you is, unless the car is brand new, the shift level will be corroded to the shaft and impossible to remove.
Depends on the location of the car. I live in dry heat and I had no issues pulling the shifter plate off my 2016 this week.
Does it fit on the STI 2017?
No
Will this work on the factory STS?
Adam Fisk Yes
SubiSpeed Incorrect, this was a typo on their website. This is compatible with factory STS.
it shouldn't matter what STS you have because it is installed off of the tyranny.
Do you guys have the Ashiko knob installed in this video?
Looks like it. Just ordered a clear translucent Ashika knob from Subispeed today.
+Angel Hernandez Sweet. How do you like it? The Ashiko is #1 on my list, just waiting to pull the trigger.
would this fit on a 2010 sti?
Nope
This seems like a bad product. You lose all that weight from the shifter plate which is there to provide some inertia for the shift.
After watching the install and Comments, I guess I really Don't need this.
Anyone install this on the 2010 lgt
F*ck me this is difficult. I’m currently three hours into this. It’s a bitch to get that adapter on, let alone the pin back in.
Yep, takes about 4 mins to install
my ass lol
this is the worst example of help
Is this the same thing as boomba transmission short shifter plate?
Will this fit a 2020 WRX Base?
Yes. Good luck. Top bolt on the rear shield is about to get rounded. :(
Zachary Caviness definitely will , just happened to me :/
