Turning an old ATV trail into a driveway for a new home

- In this video I use a Deere 35 zts to widen and level an existing quad trail into a full time driveway. This work was all done in one day. More videos to follow are on their way for this project.

Excellent video. Your choice of music was perfect, and the way you break in and out of speeding up the video keeps it just right for holding attention. There are so many details in the way you did this LONG road that every clip of your video has something of unique interest. Trees, stumps, digging out shale, etc. each requires a little different approach which I'm glad you show. I also like how you put the "going home" trailer on the end when you were done with the main work - nice touch that some don't always do. Thank you so much for sharing.

Nice video. I like the drive video the scenery is pretty, if someone does not like it they can fast forward please continue showing it. I am amazed at all the people that "watched" but do not see anything. They think they can tell the owner that the job has to be done their way not the owners. They obviously do not work for people. We have many driveways at more grade around here and they can be difficult in winter but if that is what the owner wants that is what they get. I had a drive that was on rock like that and was steep in winter I spread the ashes from the wood stove and it was not a problem to get in and out. Many people that build out in the woods will want a road that is the least obtrusive to the view. I know from other video you picked up a bunch of the wood, but despite what some think leaving wood to decompose and hold back water, provide shelter for animals is not wasting it. When I have opened land for fields I try to lace the branches in a pile in between standing trees to provide shelter for wildlife. Rabbit and squirrel can be tasty so providing a nice home to them to increase the numbers is beneficial. Good work you are a very talented man. You have such a large aptitude of knowledge from electricity, auto repair, plumbing and machinery operator. My Dad told me when I was little and he was an Operating Engineer those that tell you they could do it better are just driving the equipment but someone like you are a true operator of the equipment.

long drive ways are the best, i wanted to get away from the main road, and back into my land as far as i could but staying on top of the last hill, city people buy up land in the country, and slap a house in 55 feet off the road, sticks out like a sore thumb,they have 20 acres behind them, doing nothing with, but they have to be on the road side, i am sure if there was not a by law saying you have to be back from your line 50 feet to build, homes would be on there road side property lines... lol i am in an unorganized town ship, so i have no laws or permits needed

It’s kind of funny reading all the comments saying the driveway needs a ditch on the uphill side when you look at the untouched ATV trail and realize it isn’t all giant ruts and washouts from years without maintenance.
RUclips must have just graduated a new class of engineers this spring.
No washouts? Djeeez man, the old trail looked like a half-pipe, ie major washout throughout, and more suited for Shaun White.
In road construction classes 35 yrs ago we learned, even for logging roads that only will see tractors, that uphill ditches is preferable and sometimes necessary. In this case were the road will be used daily and with cars, it is necessary. Basta. I guess the guy deliberately didn't make a ditch so he can come back in a couple of yrs to do the inevitable repair. Smart guy.

By the looks of the rock in the driveway I figured you had to be in Andrew Camarata’s neck of the woods and when I followed the link someone posted for the papers mill chimney I realize how close you actually are being not to far north of Saugerties.
Great work with a very tough site. That driveway will be a maintenance nightmare no matter how it is built. Even the armchair engineers on RUclips couldn’t make it maintenance free.
Andrew would not have left all those trees he pushed down, it looked a tornado went through the property

@@SteifWood I did go back and do some work, but no ditches, its solid bedrock on the upper side. The mess is how the customer wants it, she is paying by the hour so who am I to create for work for myself

man,, I can see that first leg being a problem in the winter,, if it were mine I make like a ramp straight down to the road, at least you'd be able to get a head start up the hill,, but thats a lot of dirt to move...
yea the problem is the further I cut into the road, the steeper it gets, so ramping more to the left (if your back is to the road) just cancels itself out even if you add distance (which usually reduces the slope) to the right is not her land anymore so thats not an option either. I think if they paved just the first leg they will be fine and keep the cost down
Great video preparing that roadway. It sure is a long one. Thought needs to be given to maintaining it over the coming years. You are the man with the expertise and the on scene perspective but have you thought about water run off. Would a ditch on the up hill side of the portions of the driveway that have a slope to them? A ditch could terminate at the bottom of the slope and be directed through a buried pipe across the driveway to the down hill side. I am afraid without some consideration the water will wind up washing down the middle of the drive and taking the top dressing and dirt with it..
I would normally dig the ditch as I am clearing. but this one was solid bedrock on the upper side, so the only way around it is to make the whole road a foot thicker and leave out the upper part, forming a ditch. but that is not in the budget, it would take several hundred tons of gravel to do that so I put 3/4" washed stone (#2) on the whole driveway to let the water drain underneath and also prevent erosion
Nice job. Glad the trees went down before the birds made nests. On your way home, what was that monument/obelisk all about on the left? Very historic looking. Looking forward to more of this project.

Hey Jesse, that came out pretty good for one days work. Are they going to have some process laid down over that? I liked the tip with the blade when pushing trees, I would be lost without the blade on my Volvo 55 as I use it quite a bit. What part of NY is that? my parents live in Salem and I'm out that way often.
the blade makes the machine invaluable. a 55 would be even better. this is in the town of coeymans
I agree, used this method last night taking down some 70 foot white pines on a commercial job we are doing. I get much better leverage on the boom this way.
What kind of drainage to you allow for? both sides or down the middle?
this one really just had drainage in the road, I used #2 stone (3/4 without fines) it allows the water to be underneath the road without coming up on top. this is because the upper side could not be ditched because it was solid bedrock

Hard to tell from the vid but looks like you're due for a cutting edge on that blade. Vid idea for you! Love em, and keep it up. What vid editing software do you use or recommend? Id like to do vids similar to yours.
How much did you charge for that job? Did you give a certain amount, or by the hour. Just curious what that would cost.
this job was by the hour, I usually charge $100 /hr
Great video Jesse. I guess if they need fire wood there will be lots of it all the way down the roadway.
They may be calling you back to do some ditching after a few good rain storms.
I usually dig the ditch as I am going, but there is nothing but solid bedrock on the upper side, so I put down #2 stone (3/4") to let the water drain underneath, and its heavy enough that it wont wash away
The ATV trail wasn’t ditched and it wasn’t all washed out and rutted.
I would say that trail was there long before ATVs were invented.
Was a drainage ditch made on the uphill side of the road?

Nothing makes a driveway or a piece of property look unfinished as trees etc just pushed of too the side instead of cutting it and removing the timber away from the site. Cheers !
I did that purposely because the customer wanted me to. But today I told her once I can get my trailer in there I can take alot of the usable wood, soon I will do that

I may take some of the wood once I can get my trailer in there. I also have a sawmill for the bigger stuff in my prior video

O.K., now I see. I you had placed some of the logs near the street I would have guessed that the wood will be used. I personally would take all the free wood and, as you mentioned, take it to a sawmill. I would also make or sell some as firewood and make wood chips out of the rest (or let the sawmill do it).

Yea I will get a dozer. This job was really too small to need it though. It was one day, and I usually wont move a machine around for less than a full day anyways. So even if the dozer took 3/4 of a day it was better to use this machine as it was already on site

Where are the drains to stop and turn the water when it rains? The big tree you pushed down had a very good ditch started for one.
You do know when a hard rain comes that driveway is going to wash out very badly! On a steep road or hill driveway you have to stop and divert the water on each side!
That will also be one heck of a long walk in and out every time it snows and there is no way you can get in and out when there is ice on it...
But what do I know?
the upper side of the driveway was solid rock, so I couldn't dig a ditch. the only real way to resolve it is put about a foot of gravel on the whole driveway and leave that side empty, forming a natural ditch. But that is not in the budget, so for now what I did was put #2 stone (3/4" washed) and let the water drain underneath. I have done it many times and works very well.
I hope you came back later and put in a trench for the water to drain from the up hill side of the road. Without that trench this road will go to hell in a hurry. Nice job...except for the trench.
I cant put a trench in because its solid bedrock on the upper side. this road was in decent condition before I touched it, I also put about 3-4" of #2 stone on the whole driveway to allow water to drain under the road

Not sure what number one even means, number two you want the organic material in the woods for the animals and to decompose and help soil, you cannot dig a ditch along a road without permission from the town and they will do it if the think it needs it. If the water flows you do not want a trench it would just be a hazard on a slippery road and it will be slippery all winter long with the trees.
You had the opportunity to dig out the high side for a trench and did not do that. Not what I would consider to be a good job!
if you read the comments , the upper side of this is solid bedrock. No way to dig that out. This road has been in for like 6 months and there is not a pothole or wet area in it, at all
To bad you do not know much about it then, do you suggest he blast the stone, if you watch you can see it is stone.
you have a better head on your shoulders them anther we all know, but if i can say one thing, your past few videos including the first time on this job, it has been very boring, i have jusr turned the volume way down to cut out the music as much as i can but still be able to tell when the music has stopped and the normal running sound is heard or you talking, or i fast forward though all the high spell recording, as there is nothing to see in that, but only to find fast forwarding i hit the end over the video before i find any normal operating, and yes i have over 38 years on all kinds of heavy equipment, from equipment that is only 6 or 7000Lbs. to huge feller bunchier forwarders that weigh 130 tons, that have to betaken apart in many peaces to move down a public road or hyw, but they mainly stay in the bush on company roads were we just drive them for many miles down the road to the next logging cut,, i will be more clear, you have far to much fast forwading in your videos witch is very boring, and you are losing watch time big time, i cant see anyone sitting and watching that for a half hour,, nothing to see, nothing for some one to learn from, nothing to see how you did that... you dont ned to show the whole job start to finish all fast forward, show some good operating then skip to another area and show more good operating,, i know you can do a good job, you dont need to fast forward so ppl cant see how you operate, i know you are a lot smother, cleaner and know how to make much better cuts then someone else we know, as well how to better care for your equipment and not be a total clown,, i gate music in videos, and like many, if we wanted to watch a music video, there are 1000's of much better ones by artistes to go watch, maybe to get a longer lasting and better looking road, keep a nice ditch on both sides of the road, edge to edge about 22 feet wide and all the dirt that comes out of the nice ditching bring up onto your road bed, to lift the road bed higher then the ground level around it, it there is no budget at the time to install culverts were needed, build a wide swales and track it in good so water can cross over to drain were it really needs to, pipe can always be added later, keep in min trees make a good water crossing in bad areasas well,water will find its way though the trees an dirt, leaving the road bed hard... later when customer have more funds they will call you to put them in, ( but if there whole road is washing they will not call you back,, ditches are your friend,,, ,, most places you dont need to as you can normal find a drop off on both sides if you lift the road bed, i use to build a 1/4 mile of logging road a day or more with an excavator, stumps were even used to fill in deep holes, and to this day 40 years later i still moose hunt them old logging roads and they have not been used or looked after for many years, and they are still holding up great after all this time, ditching and lifting the road bed all the way, is the key to a lasting road, and little material needs haled in, you will find, there is always a big bank to dig out of were needed so you dont have a roller coaster road.. lol have a great day
You have more experience than most that watch my videos. I think the younger generations appreciate the time lapse and music more. I do get alot of comments on how people like when I speed it up. I think more experienced watchers like yourself like to watch it in realtime. Its hard to accomodate everyones tastes. Yes I would normally always put in a ditch on the hillside, but it is solid bedrock all the way through. So we will put some #2 (3/4" washed) stone down to allow the water to run underneath of it. Ideally I could raise the whole road a foot and then I could have a foot deep trench, but thats thousands of yard of fill. I think my next video will be more of your taste. This one just didnt have alot of exciting stuff going on, and its hard to find something exciting with 8 hrs of footage from 2 cameras. My biggest problem is I work every day and have a family so its hard to find alot of time to edit. Last night I was in my garage till 11 oclock just working on my machines. Thanks for watching
Its always good to have a rap up at the end and explain stuff like this, try to head off the questions you think you may get and what you would have done if money was unlimited ect, The drive home could have been far, far shorter.
I think that was the longest run on sentence I have ever read! I am one that enjoys watching these types of videos. Jesse seems to be new to RUclips, but doesn't appear to be new to being an operator of equipment. His camera angles and set-up of them, I am sure will improve as he gets into editing these more, will show him better results. "Normal speed," is ok at times, but to listen to little 4 bangers running at 2500 rpm's is truly annoying, as is listening to a bucket trying to dig through, or should I say scrapping through bed rock, so great place for music, and time lapse. It's great you have such knowledge, you maybe should start your own channel I might view some of them. Money as you know, I am guessing from experiences you must have had, base on your testimony, is budgeted for curtain aspects of a job. This driveway, I am sure will be address more, as the owner gets further along, but at present time, contractor can definitely get started. Jesse, good beginning/start, I'll keep checking out your videos, but when breaking or scrapping rock, let the music rock harder too!
@@karlgriggs8887 as for lissening to as you so called clam, to 4 bangersrunnning and bucket scraping on rock, all these sound leavels can be lowered or rased in the video autio editing soft ware, same with music files tracks added can be lowered volume or rased, you just have to know were to find and use the tiils in the software, i dont know who you are talking to about starting a chanal, i really hope it was not me you were talking to, because, for one to go off at he mouth, like that, . with out first having a look around, really wouldnt look good on you.. yes he is a good operator,, when you can see what he is really doing, but he can use some pointers, that dont take any more time, in fact, what i explained to him, would save hime a lot of time building, and have a better end result in a shorter time frame, iit is amasing how fast road is built when doing the ditches on both sides as you go, not making 50 foot long pushes back and forth.. and still being at ground level grade with the road
@@jmuller86 YES I understand your point, and yes i know the young people that have never run eqipment like to see fast action, like an ATV, DOING 90MPG DOWN HARD ROAD OVER ONE working slow though a timber lot to a remote lake, they find that boring from mine. i dont know the ground there but the normal digging i could see you were pulling up full buckets of shale like rock, many times when building a road/ drive way, you can find many bank humps were you can pull tons of good materal out of, to lift the road even 6 to 10" higher then the ground along the road, giving you a fair road lift and a nice ditch to take the water away fast, you have a really good head on your sholders, and have a fair good idea what has to be done, i like to show new operators were and how they can find and pull out a lot of materal with out makingit look like a boomb drop zone, and how little it takes to life a road or drive way grade up in order to form a good ditch to stop water over land and across the road washing away what little was there, water bars alone dont stop that without a nice ditch, to take it away, it is amazing how muchfill one can pull from the sides that liftstheroad grade just that little that makes or brakes it, with out having to spend good money halling in file,,, just some food forthough, as your moving along, there is no need smashing rock going know were as one we know takes that rout.. you dont get snow, to were you have to plow, so topping with 3/4 stone may hold up, but up here that stone would be in the ditch the first winter plowing, i like to cap with ground asphalt on a hot day and roll it, it solid and with a coating of hot tar and covered with thin coating of sand or pea graval, seals it tight so water cant get i, keep up the good work, opened mind, eyes open, if you seen my 1800 foot long drive way and 23 feet wide i built that whole base in a day with a cat 210 mini, and later covered it with a 12 foot wide roll of landscape fabric, and capped it with 6" of township road graval, it is a little drtyer then GA but it packs in like rock , nothing was halled in but the road graval cap over 38 years ago, and in 2006 i put another 4" of fresh road graval down. i know Its hard to accommodate everyone tastes. but one would think, the younger ones would like to see it in real time, to learn how it is done, but hat maybe not what they are here for, more the flying of booms, blades, and track as entertainment,, like a dog chasing its tail sort of thing.. lol .. take care
