Jill’s album from ‘87 deserves a reissue with bonus bits! ❤
I remember that album and yes it was released in 1987. I was in the 11th grade.
Jill always comes through on her interviews. One of my favorite Prince proteges to listen to. Her personality shines. I love her!
Love Jill Jones. Speaks her mind and holds nothing back.
I hope the members of Apollonia 6 (Susan & Brenda) make an appearance on this show.
Yes that would be dope...even hearing brenda and susan run into Prince story thats on youtube from the sound of the story I think it was 2004 or 2005 but that story with Prince really wanting to meet Brenda son was a classic story
Likewise!!!
They did!!!!!! It’s on the podcast RUclips page live now! Part 2&3 are coming later on!!! Take a watch it was incredible!!!
CarolDavis is beautiful
@@cheatcodecharlie how can I see that story?
I was cracking up about the Lady Cab Driver story because it reminded me of when I was a kid and my whole family went to the Purple Rain Concert. There was a point in the concert when Prince went up to the 2nd level of this set that had a bed. Then he started humping it! And I hear my mom say, "Good Lord!!! What the hell!" LOL We still bring that up today...LOL I was old enough because I just started college, but my little brother was still in grade school!
As a musician, I laughed so hard hearing about Jill playing keyboards.
Me too 🤣
why?
That was so freakin' funny!!! But I bet all of them were sweating bullets!!!!
Same here!! Because I remember nights like that where, as a musician, you just fly by the seat of your pants. Literally!! We listen to some of our old gigs and rehearsals now and die laughing because if we hear mistakes, we can remember the exact circumstances of what happened. Sometimes it's funny af! hahaha
Love these stories. Thanks for sharing. A little anecdote: back in 1987, Jill came in my hometown Verona, in Italy, for the summer music event Festivalbar, held in the ancient roman amphitheater Arena. She walked out the limo through the crowd near the artist entrance for the backstage and shook my and a few other hands. She was (and she still is) a very beautiful and talented woman
True Prince fan here, yes just finding this and mad I am late to the damn party! But I am really enjoying this and the memories. Jill Jones was so fine to us back then and still is. Love the stories.
I just discovered Apollonia's RUclips page yesterday!!! But I'm glad I did.... been binge watching since! 👍
I appreciate that Jill doesn’t rehash the same stories despite the countless times she’s been interviewed.
Every convo with her adds a new insight.
Awesome interview
All I can say is I was 15 yrs old in Chicago and Jill Jones was THE video vixen. She was something else! Still is!
It's good to see two women, who not only worked with Prince on a business level but also were involved with him intimately reunite on this show in a respectful way🙂
JJ is hilarious. Thanks for the many stories. My favorite aunt turned me on to Prince in 79-80 when I was twelve. I’ll never 4get her when the Controversy album came out, she played it continuously on rotation. She was so fun to watch with that album, it served as a little distraction while my parents were headed for separation & divorce. My personal response to Prince’s music came in HS spring of 84 with the release of “Doves Cry”. It spoke to my situation at the time as a young black youth trying to push for a better life despite a rough family environment. Yep Doves Cry, such a solid record still…
Jill jones has aged so gracefully..always a pleasure to hear her speak..
These backstories are pure gold and funny as hell! I so dig Jill's spunk, and we get a part two!!! Can't wait til Jerome joins in on the fun on the next episode, perhaps???🤔🤔🤔🤔
Jerome would be AWESOMENESS!!
Denise Matthews made the wise decision to leave Purple Rain and Vanity 6. It worked out well for everyone. The world is empty without Prince and Vanity but their legendary contribution to pop culture in the '80s is unparalleled.
Denise said Prince never paid her. She didn't get any money from the album and the money she got from touring she had to give to The Time for being her band. She had to leave to make a living
No it didn't she left jam n lewis monte dez left I wanted the original 1999 tour family 🙋🙇😭
1000%
@@PhuckHue2 prince paid vanity $1,000. a month for the album and tour combined. He looked at it as one project. Maybe she did pay the time for playing on her songs. I would believe that. But remember prince didn't have a lot of money then, but paying more than a dozen people to set up stage, etc. In 82' when minimum wage was under $3.00. an hour, A thousand dollars was a lot of money. If denise lived with prince she paid no rent. I think she spent a lot of money on cocaine, to deal with prince playing in other sandboxes. It was smart for her to leave prince. And that broke his heart. "If you give me back my heart, I'll give you back your Name " prince.
@@saa9099 Nope Denise said with her own mouth Prince never paid her. Thats why she left. After she left they were still seeing each other anyway
The last concert Prince did (Hit And Run Tour) in my home town., I had the opportunity to met him. I missed the opportunity due to my division didn't tell me they were working. All Officers met him and escorted him on stage. Keep doing what you are doing by keeping his legacy alive. Thank you all for what you are doing.
OG Jill Jones 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾😃😃😃😃 I love the Lady Cab Driver story!!!
I knew Jill would bring the joy and realness! Wonderful job to all!!! Thank you for giving this sad new widow an hour of relief.
My condolences.
How all of their lives interconnect...it's mind-blowing!
Excellent First part in this interview with Jill Jones. It is wonderful to hear her experience around Prince, how she was his muse, and how things occured around them. I cannot wait to listen to the second part.
I am loving these interviews!! So glad I discovered this channel. Appolonia is a legend!
-great show, enjoyed the stories, fantastic to listen to Jill.
So well done. Fantastic intro and looks elegant and beautiful. Jill Jones rocks! I’m hooked on this series now. Thanks Apollonia 💜😃
Jill's Life is Fascinating...Love all the Details
Jill explaining her musical connection with Teena Marie and Tata Vega was so cool to know!!!!! Amazing 🤩
Another great entry. It's so rare that Jill gets the attention that she deserves. Thank you again.
Great interview! I feel like I'm at the table with you! Your stories are a blast😂
I am cracking up. "What did you just say!?" The phrase uttered by the mothers of Prince fans everywhere since 1981, lolol 😆
Absolutely loved this episode! All of this legendary TEA!!!
It’s awesome that you’re doing this podcast!!! Thank you!
I have that Ozone album, and had no idea that was Jill Jones on the cover!!!!!! Amazing stories, and awesome Podcast!
Oh man, I love this!!! I subscribed immdiately! Love Apollonia and loved the interview she did with Djvlad! I know I'm going to love this podcast. I'm here and I'm going to spread the word about it. God bless you, Apollonia!
From Teena to Rick to Prince to years in Japan! 😍😍😇😇 The stories she could tell! I love JJ! All day all night is one of all time faves! Much power to you sis! 🤩🤩
SO happy that I saved ALL my Cassettes and My Albums, with Posters. i then bought the CDs b/c i didn't want my tapes worn out. My collections have followed me over 40 years. I would like some LIVE concert. I got W2A Deluxe last summer and I haven't opened it. #Jill is a favorite of mine and I think SHE has a great and proper story to tell. MISS HIM EVERYDAY!
I so understood what Jill was saying about early on in Prince’s career how he liked his backing vocalist women to have simple sounding vocals. She basically said she felt Prince liked the voices that way, over the more soulful, dramatic, dynamic sounding voices. I’ve always notice that, but never heard anyone say it before.
Jill delivers a great time as always!!!!
Jill's awesome!!! This was a good one!
Great episode! Love listening to the backstories and hearing how things came together from the early days! 💜
Man I just found out about this podcast. Very interesting stuff and cool stories! So much great history being discussed by these folks. Jill Jones is amazing!!
I love hearing these stories. This is the best💜
You ladies are definitely icons in my mind. As a kid I always wanted to be you guys... I knew I wanted to be in the entertainment industry and I knew I wanted to be a star
I enjoy this so much lots of smiles and giggles, thank you for sharing. 💜
I love this episode..
love how u all paint the behind-the-scenes pictures..
Wow. Lady Cab Driver story. That is priceless. My first listen to your podcast. This is great. Keep going my Latina sister!!!
I just love this…more please 😊
Great chat with Jill. Looked at the run time and thought 'only an hour?'', then saw Part 2 advertised. Ready for that one.
This interview is so good! I have so much love for Jill Jones and Apollonia. I'm glad they're sharing their memories.💜💜
I absolutely love this podcast! I've been a Prince super fan since 75 and I've learned more about Prince and the amazingly talented people around him in watching just two of your podcasts than I've learned anywhere else - so impressive.
Sooooooooo in Love with Jill she put the power in all of Princes songs with her back up vocals. R.i.P Teena Marie. JILL JONES ALBUM 87 💯🎯 hearing her sing "My Man" now in my Head!
Absolutely love this.....Bless your beautiful heart Jill... 😀💜💜
Apollonia, I found your channel about 4 weeks ago. I feel like I am going back in time when I watch the videos on your channel. Prince was a huge part of my childhood (was 14 when Purple Rain came out) and I consider him the greatest artist of all time. Thank you for the channel, you are so sweet and down to earth. Prince was lucky to find you! Please keep it going!
Great interview!! I was in love with Apollonia and Lisa Jones in Purple Rain!! Still until this day only Arena concert I've ever been to was Prince in the 1999 Tour in 1983 with The Time and Vanity 6 I was only 4 years old getting ready to turn 5!! My mom took me and brother it was in Ann Arbor, Mi I'll never forget it!!
Wonderful episode ☺️ I loved it-💕 I liked Jill's comment about the Bonnie Bell models - I remember those ads in the magazines-- I'm a mixed race woman and it was a different time-- growing up in the 70's --Prince definitely opened doors -- I was blown away by all the beautiful women in prince's camp. Apollonia's reference to the Benetton ads is so spot on 👌🏻
This is real cool that Jill Jones can clean up what the bs media did regarding who the lead actress will be for Purple Rain and more, thank you Apollonia for your podcast.
Very CooL Interview with Jill An Apollonia talking about the old days.💜🕊
"The chick had to put her hair out" Love Jill Jones on soooo many levels🎆💜🎆
Apollonia will there be a part 2 of Jill Jones video? What about Cat glover and Brenda and Susan? Another great interview I couldn’t click on the fast enough!
What an outstanding episode! 💜
Jill was involved in the recording of so many incredible songs by P, I think. Masterpieces like "The Ladder", "Hello", "1999", "Belle of StMark" her vocals always soulful and fruity fresh lol, it was such a key element too to his best work
Jill is just phenomenal. Off to a great start!
I loved the hair anecdotes. Didn't know Jill had as many family entertainment industry connections 💗
I coveted her album when it came out. 🙏🏼
I am late discovering this podcast. I think I am hooked. Jill is a great story teller.
Wow! Although Apollonia is the host she really gives the platform for her guest to talk. Thank you Ms. Kotero 💜👍
"Beauty walking in the door" That would be Apollonia 💃🏻
Jills mom is breathtakingly beautiful!! When Jill hit the screen with the blond hair it was over! Makes sense!
As a new, budding musician myself, it's always fascinating to get game and knowledge, hear the stories behind the great musicians and that dope music from around '79 to -'81, a young Prince, a fully grown MJ, the great bass players... Awesome music.
I like the fact the host let the guest talk so many podcast host talk all over the guest
Hahaha! Facts. In 2006 I went to Minneapolis in the summer and was shocked by how hot and humid it was. People think Minnesota=cold, but not in the summer time 🥵🥵🥵
When this damn movie came out I was going through my teen age heart aches 😂 oh god! Jill sounds & looks like how she did in the movie! As far as attitude.
I predicted this on Instagram that it would be Jill Jones. Beautiful.
Hearing Jill Jones hollering and making all that noise in the car made me a die hard Prince fan and completely blew my mind at just 3 years old....lol.....
Thank U 4 Deciding 2 Do This!!!
Seth, Apple & Jill
This interview puts things into perspective with Prince, in terms of people talking about the "regular degular" moments, like Prince wanting to do Jill's hair and it not coming out right.
That JJ album was such a classic. There was something so cool about that Prince-Jill relationship as a fan. Something so light and sexy at the same time. You could also
tell he really cared about the quality of the album.
Absolutely Awesome Jill Jones 🔥🔥🔥 and of course Apollonia 💣💣💣💥💥💥👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
We need Jill's book
Great interview. Jill turned into the woman who played Prince's mom in the film
Wow!! You all bring back so many memories of music for me!!! I grew up in the 70s just south of Detroit (downriver). I know every name and the music you are talking about!! Great insights and memories of Prince and the music business! 💕
Ive always thought the same that the backing vocals of the 82-86 period being a part of the foundation of purple music affected Prince to the end.
Ive always preferred the shadowed mirroring of their voice and his was perfection.
I loved this interview. Moreover, I love that they are telling their truths in mature, respectful ways and not bashing anyone at all but you know what it is!😅
My album for 1987 was JILL JONES! Can recite it from beginning to end.
Been watching a lot of these interviews & have so much respect for Vanity for walking away as opposed to hanging around like an ornament waiting to be displayed wherever he saw fit in his life until he dismissed you. Prince seemed to have respect for the female musicians in his life, but the others just seemed so interchangeable & not taken seriously by him, given all these stories of being one of several in his rotating harem. All the empty promises he made them & the undiscussed breakups. Once Vanity left he was on a mission to make her regret it, she definitely lived rent free in his mind where as all the others that followed seemed temporary & hang on to their time w him till to this very day. Denise put it in her rearview & never wanted to even discuss it as she carved her own path. Spoke with her a year before she passed as she was selling her book, in her words, being Vanity was the least interesting thing about her. She never lost her spunk. 😊
OMG how am I just now finding these? Thank you Apples!
Love this. Look foward to the next episode!
I am so excited about your show Big Big fan of all the Purple family thank you so much
As kids we were obsessed with the 1999 videos. When our parents would go out with friends, their kids and my sister and I would be left at our house and we would lip sync to 1999. We had a big organ that was my grandparents in our living room at the time. So me and my friend Monica would be Jill and Lisa playing the organ when we would lip sync and act like them from the 1999 video. We were totally obsessed with them. So much fun.
So glad I found this!!!!❤️❤️❤️
I remember summer of 1984 - I was 8 years old and spent that summer at DAYCARE. I would bring my Purple Rain tape and we would dannnnce in the main playroom, didn’t skip a single song. Not even Darlin’ Nikki. And we would practice our grind 😂💀
I’m surprised the teachers didn’t stop us, but they were all so young themselves and they loved Prince too! lol It was all so much fun!!
Well hello again, Appolonia. We met in Minneapolis and you went around a bit with my older half sisrer. But I remember that it was so wet and cold with a sleet, and the bridge , and the jewelry chain Prince gave you kept breaking off ( giggles) and you know, I was in a girls'band I made up so I got my career going so early. Kid performer's. I have always admired your concentrated listening qualities. I loved how much we shared and relationship advice you asked me for.
Overall the skinny kid kinda rockabilly punk and pixie ish. My long hair. I had worked stage hand for my entire life with family and got all over globe making shows look smooth . Our ideas are so valid !! Did he ever tell you more about our marriage by moon Priestess Chaka Khan? Did he open up ?
I couldn't leave school. Though I felt torn and shiftless as he did for not staying always with him . He was a tad clingy, lol, I'm Virgo.
Still.
-StarRrfish.
My new stage name is Daffodil
Thanks Apples. Really great interview.
2 of my absolute favorites 💜💜Congrats Apples on the podcast. Definitely subbing 🍎
Love all the story telling!
I TRULY ENJOYED THIS INTERVIEW WAS AWESOME ALL AROUND JILL APPLES LOVE LOVE LOVE HEARING LITTLE THINGS KEEP IT UP 💗 💕
Apollonia, I happened to come across your show by accident... And I'm glad that I did! I could sit and listen to you and JJ experiences with Prince. The keyboard story was funny... So funny! Please have Brenda and Susan on your show, please!
Hi Apollonia and Seth, I just came across your channel and have subbed. This is such a great channel with iconic guests and you both ask insightful questions drawing out the best from them. Thanks for all you guys do for the Purple Family.
EXCELLENT. JILL JONES IS A PERSONAL SHERO. CONGRATS ON A GREAT SHOW XOXOXO
I love Jill Jones!
Good interview, Love Jill and I just find so interesting that all the ladies he dated remained friends and ultimately see each as family.
Another great episode....... love the stories. ⭐💜⭐
Loved the comment about Prince not liking vibrato. I didn't know that. Because of that, the background vocals did create a unique sound that no one else had. And like Jill, I prefer that to the singers he had later on.
