- Welcome back to It's Alive with Brad Leone for episode 87 and the final installment of Brad’s special backyard grilling series. This week our guy is joined by friend and colleague Chrissy Tracey for a forest excursion focused on finding ramps - edible wild leeks that grow in shaded, woody areas. With their freshly picked supplies ready to go, our foraging pros head back to Casa Brad to rendezvous with Sam Seneviratne and bake a few pizzas with seasonal toppings. Since the Condé Naste fiasco, I swore to never watch BA's content again. The _only_ reason I'm back, and the _only_ content I watch is Brad's. The world would be a better place if he just got up and left that god awful company and started his own channel.

i like brad’s and chrissy’s attitude. they don’t just go out i take and take and take only because it is available, they looking to preserve those valuable gifts of nature and only take take what is not harm the diverse nature. highly appreciate this kind of educational episodes which hopefully lead to a spread of more and more respectful and responsible behavior of all subscribers and beyond.

I live in Connecticut! My grandma and I pick these every year. We always fry some up and toss em in soup. Sometimes we even pickle them!

This is a great episode! I am glad they spent time talking about harvest protocols. Ramps are definitely a sensitive plant and overharvesting in Quebec has resulted in ramp harvesting being made illegal. Gotta take care of your friends, folks.

I have always dug up and used the bulb section of the plant. You will need a sharp stick or other digging tool to get to the bulb.
Same. The whole time I’m watching this thinking you’re doing it all wrong 😑 The entire plant is edible, including the bulb. Which in my opinion is the best part! 👍 Pickled ramp BULBS are the best!!
The bulb is very good, but if you dig it up that plant won't regrow the next year, it has an effect on the soil and colony health, and ramps are a vulnerable species. In order to harvest ramps in a sustainable way, please just use the stem and leaves.

Growing up in the pnw have great memories of hiking around looking for shanties morels, stopping at a clearing on the gravel roads for rallying or shooting. God bless this great nation.
When is he going to ferment Ramps?
When is he actually going to ferment anything? 3-4 days is barely letting the process begin, stuff starts getting good after 21 days or so usually. He never goes that long.

Where i grew up we had acres of them every Spring/summer....i used to eat them like a cow when i was a child, as an adult they make a excellent chutney or salad....the best of nature x
Current AT thru hiker here. Ramps all over the south in the spring! Also found some morels. Be VERY CAREFUL NOT to eat Lily of the valley, which has leaves similar to ramps. Just pull up on the ramp, smell, and if it smells like onion/garlic, you're good. If not, don't eat it. If you can't smell, also don't eat it. Because one person on trail almost died doing just that. Happy foraging, be safe and smart!

I live in Italy on the Mediterranean coast and ramps are everywhere. They have such beautiful purple flowers...they take 2 full winters to germinate, thats why they’re called double dormant plants. They smell really nice too :D

When I lived in Pennsylvania, I substituted ramps for scallions in my pork dumplings and it gave them a freshness and sweetness. I miss foraging and eating them!
As a plant biologist I loved their respect of the plants. Just good conservative picking to ensure future yields.

Pickled ramp leaves just turn to slime. You’d need the ramp bulb to pickle, which he failed to gather. 😑

My husband's uncle used to bring me ramps every year...2 years ago a friend of my daughter brought me ramps..it brought back memories of long ago..I have tried to plant them..first creating an area that they should like..put some in last summer and am hoping that I will see some shoots..still have my fingers crossed.

I feel like I’ve literally been to this house before when I was a kid lmao. Obviously not when brad was living there bahah previous owners though. I recognize that mountain range and the oven is so familiar to me. But also a lot of homes in ct look like this so who knows lol. Great video as always. Foraging for ramps and mushrooms was one of my favorite things to do growing up there

I've never used a pizza peel or a pizza oven/wood fired oven, these people make it look so easy
Brad is spot on with the conservation, ramps take up to 7 years to reproduce. 10% harvest every 10 years is a good rule of thumb.
