I just wanted to share a thank you to the UMA crew for making us sell our couch, we are on our way to living our dream. We are launching our first rebuilt sailboat today. We will be using this as our practice sailboat until my retirement and getting out home on the water as soon as that comes. Your word of "don't wait and just do it" that you said a while back as made us buy our first boat (No DeBait) a 1972 Tanzer 22, it's small and easy to learn with.
    Again Dan, Kika, Thank you!!

Ditto, I bought an old, cheap and cheerful 20' keeler, I took it out for my first time sailing yesterday inspired by all these young whippersnappers on RUclips, even had dolphins alongside for a minute... Hope you enjoyed your maiden voyage... And yeah thanks for inspiring us to get out there

Having been forced by health and financial problems to give away my last big sailboat 30 years ago, I decided to try again with a 1985 Spindrift 22 on a trailer that I saved on its way to the dump.
Circumstances have slowed the refit to a crawl, but I will carry on.
I tossed my couch years ago.

I have an electrical inboard on my 22ft westerly, and the "ghost motor sailing" works really well on my boat: no sail: 1.0kW/3 knots. no engine: 1.5 knots on 3 knot wind. 300W engine + sail: 3 knots. It's a speed doubler in cases of (almost) no wind, at hardly a charge of the batteries.

I wish I could say I was surprised, but they tend to be so rude, I don't blame you for not trying the other docks further in the bay and just leaving - not much to see in this city anyway (people come here mostly as a base for surfing). Happy sailing both! Sorry to have missed you. If you can dock in Llanes, try (it's usually full), otherwise Portugal is very nice as well :)

About 25 years ago, three of us took 2 power boats out.
We lived in Honolulu, and we launched at Sand Island.
(Right next to HNL airport.) We cruised to Waikiki,
one of the times I actually liked going to Waikiki.
As soon as we hit the open water, we happened upon
a small pod of Spinner Dolphins. (Had to be well over
100.) At any time, there were five to ten dolphins in the
air. They are called Spinner Dolphins, because when
the get air, they can do 2 or 3 complete revolutions in
mid air. They were RIGHT NEXT to us, and we all got
    soaked.
They stayed with us, until we got close to Waikiki.
(Yes, Dolphins are smart, they also stay away from
    tourist traps.)
If it is "tourist season," why can't we hunt them?

I'm Spanish and I absolutely love the Northern coast of Spain, more than the Mediterranean. If you guys ever go back to that area you really can't miss the piece of the coast between Zumaya and Deva (no more than 10km), which has one of the most impressive "flysch" in the world. For those who don't know a flysch is a sequence of sedimentary layers, accumulated over time, that have been twisted and revealed by the push of tectonic plates, and can be observed as a historical sequence (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flysch).
This one in particular I think covers one of the largest periods, millions and millions of years. There are also tourist boats that give you the "reading" of those layers, and you can even do it as a hike walking on top of it with a guide that will explain everything to you. You can also sail near the coast to see it from upclose. Really spectacular!

Lovely episode and dolphin encounter. However: I guess you are aware off the Orca attacks/ rudder ‘nibbles’ further up the coast of Spain/ Portugal? Countermeasures seem to use fishermen ultrasound units.

I hope you'll stop by A Coruna. I sailed there last summer and it was an absolutely amazing city and marina... Anyways, seems like you're at the southern coast already, so either you have been there or you won't see it in the near future :)

Shame you couldn't explore Santander. It is a lovely city. I hope you visit Figeuira da Foz when you reach the Portuguese coast.
