Had a random meeting with Dan today, it was weird to meet someone who has influenced my deciding to buy a sailboat and live aboard, especially the day before I take possession. Thanks Dan and Kika for all the videos and some inspiration.
The weird grassy ball things on the beach are sea balls!!! Often called sea balls, sea rissols or sea potatoes, they are the result of leaves of seagrass rhizome that have torn up. Once they are dead what remains of the fibre-like leaves of the seagrass cluster together very closely and create these brown coloured balls.
I figure the natural mechanism that turns them in to balls is really similar to how felting works, just a bunch of fibers getting tossed and rolled in the sea, intertwining into a solid ball of natural felt.
I prefer to climb with people who have fear than with those that lack it - fear makes you careful. Overcoming fear takes practice, but it makes one a better climber, I think. And it does not matter how long the fall is, it is something that took me a long time to do. Congratulations for practicing it, you will get to the point where the only reason you don’t want to let go is pride :)
I apologize if some has already mentioned this. But when Kika was doing the fall practice (starting around 13:50), notice the camera mounted on the face of the climb. Someone, I assume Dan, had to not only rig that camera, but rig the one that got the shot of that camera, before even beginning this segment. Absolutely incredible dedication to bringing us a pro level video. You guys are at the top of the YT creators! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Sailing and rock climbing go hand in hand very well. You already have a mast you have to climb, need a knowledge of knots and ropes, and have water access to great climbing areas. I love the climbing content on here!

Yes Stefan, I’d have to agree with you about the “missing things” in my life as well. I’m in my 50’s and while I traveled to many places, there are just oodles more I didn’t get to. About 10 years ago, my lifelong autoimmune disease kicked up several notches and sidelined me; and 6 years ago, stage IV cancer made damn sure of that sidelining. One day you’re 20 thinking your whole life is ahead of you, but you need to run bell to bell to “get there” quick. Next thing you know, you’ve got 20 years of 16 hour days, and you’re 40 thinking you’re heading into more fun years, more secure years. For most that’s probably petty much the story. When illness gives you a permanent kick in the b*%%$ and takes those “fun years” away…. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to scream to young people and say “don’t fall for it, do shit while you’re young”!! Dan & Kika have the right idea here. I can’t believe they’ve been at this for over 8 years already, that’s amazing. Do it now while you’re young, unafraid and not tied to a couch & a mortgage. I’m not going to ever see all the places I had carefully planned to “tackle when I retire”, the southern med being my #1 place. Makes me shake my head to have my body shut me down after busting my ass for so many years. Keep kicking ass this way you two! You’ve got the right plan! Another awesome video! 🤠👍🏼☮️🇨🇦
Nice to see the confident support of Dan helping Kika work through her fall anxiety. His patient reassurance that she has the ability, and maybe Kika is starting to accept Dan's confidence in her ability. A fine line between encouragement and pushing too hard. I think they are on the good side.
Regarding the totally obnoxious roll caused by the incoming swell: why not set a second anchor off to either stbrd or port level with the stern of the boat, loop the rode around a stern cleat, and pull the boat in line with the swells? It is soooooooo much nicer to ride the swells bow to stern vs having them hit on the beam. The other (and better) option is to switch to a catamaran and do the same thing. The beam swells in a cat are still obnoxious, but not quite as obnoxious in a monohull. Love your channel!
I haven't climbed outside yet, but had my first fall in the climbing gym at the weekend and came out with cuts and bruises. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, & you can always get an instructor to go through fall practice with you. My instructor has become a really good friend to me & there is no one I trust more to drop & not hurt me 😊
I have recently approached climbing and suddenly felt in love with it, but... But. I share Kika's bad feeling about falling. Talking with people climbing for a long time it came up that some of them still fear falling. Watching Kika practising so many times was encouraging. Thanks guys as always! 😊

Be proud of yourself, Kika! I work hard to overcome my anxiety of small spaces, as well as downhill skiing, and find that each success gives me more courage for the next time. As you found, I always figure out that my worst fears are inflated, which helps me keep the next effort in perspective. Overcoming anxiety is not for the faint of heart, and you deserve much credit for facing your fear!
Have you looked into making a rocker stopper? I have a triangular plate with a weight in one of the corners. A three point bridle to it. I pole the out on a short spinnaker pole to the side of the boat. when boat rolls down on that side the plate dives, when it rolls back, the plate damps the roll. Even big boat wakes result in less than two rolls. It has made my full keel Bristol livable on anchor or at a mooring. My boat is a lot smaller than yours, but my triangle is only about 18" per side and is probably bigger than i need. a 24" side triangle would dampen your rolls pretty significantly. Think of all the anchorages that you could use when the others run for marinas. message back if you need more info.
Kudos to Kika for getting on the sharp end and leading the climbs. When you're above your pro, on sketchy crimp hold, Elvis leg going, then get your next clip, everything calms down and that tiny hold turns into a big jug.. Smooth seas and fair winds to you.
Hah, I remember my first time skydiving. The plane we used had me hanging from a spar under the wing and I vividly recall counting down from 3... and not letting go for what felt like an eternity (in video footage, there's almost no delay). Letting go is REALLY hard sometimes. Good job, Kika!

The "tree balls" (;)))) are actually the bases off of which a type of seaweed grows form (I don't know the English name for the seaweed, in Italian is Poseidonia and it is a straight, kind of "woody" seaweed that is sign for clear waters where it grows). Gratz Kika on confronting your fear of falling. Couple suggestions: Don't let closing your eyes or grabbing for the rope become habit. You need to see what's going on and be aware as you go, where and how you would go if a fall occurs. The rope will catch you. Keep you hands free for controlling the fall and fending off walls or projections you might not want to slam into. If you're afraid of cartwheeling, which is more likely on a slope, keeping your eyes open and hands and feet free will help you avoid that. Another fun video guys.

Beautiful climbing shots! I love seeing your adventures and I very much hope you wear helmets a good bit more. My first cousin was an avid climber but hated helmets. He lost his hold, restraints caught but he fell15' and crashed his head into rock and died. You two are precious to us all. Have fun and be safe. Dean
Very jealous of your boat, boat life, and the 2 of you seemed to be each others best friend it is beautiful. Not jealous of all the climbing. Well I take that back I wish I didn't have a fear of heights, and could, but I would push myself to hike the trail to the point and that would be about as much as I could psuh myself. You both have such fun personalities. What a wonderful life you have!
I guess you have to weigh everything and evaluate which risk is worth taking. If you fall and are injured, it could potentially stop your sailing for at least a while, having to stay in one place to recover. Sailing has its own risks too. Fear isn’t the biggest enemy really.. I think carelessness is the enemy because then foolish choices are made and consequences happen. You both seem to evaluate well. Just be as careful as you can and know your limits. Then go and enjoy your life 😊
I see the special sea balls your playing with and later you mention swimming horses I already know too much. great work at falling practice to climb you have to fall I used to climb on rocks about maybe 15 feet high even when you land on your prehensil tail do it gracefully and save that crying for the shower everyone falls it's how you get back up

Hey UMA, go online and check out the rocker stoppers to keep your boat from rocking in the heavy swells. It’ll help you tremendously when you’re in these bay/coves so you can get some sleep ,happy sailing !!
Good step.. If I'm ever feeling down, I watch your latest and really perk up. This was definitely one of those....Kika, all your silk work has given you the body and arms to do this rock stuff. You looked great going up first. Liked the helmet use...check your lines frequently. Be safe..
You guys consistently find new places to explore and have fun, which never gets boring to watch. Kika, great job on practicing overcoming your fear of falling. Sometimes you just have to embrace the suck to get over something that causes anxiety to get prepared for a potentially bad situation. Now you'll know what it feels like in a real situation but I hope you will never have to experience a fall and if you do, Dan will catch you as he always does. I thought it was funny you counted down 3-2-1 and held your breath like you were going underwater for the first time. All that was missing was you plugging your nose...lol.
Depending on where you are, if swells are an issue, could you just go onto land and pitch a tent so you can sleep? Perhaps you would be concerned to leave the boat unmanned and on anchor overnight. The falling practice was really excellent. It was interesting to see how falling above your anchor point is different than falling below it. Kika, As a fellow vertically challenged person, I would say that you are a better climber than Dan if you can do all the climbs that he can. This is because there are hand and footholds that he can reach but for which you need to jump. His height gives Dan a definite advantage. Also, men are naturally gifted with more upper body strength than women, which is an advantage for overhangs and means that you have to work harder. So don't knock yourself at all. You are both definitely awesome, though!!!
You guys are enthralling I couldn't take my eyes off this video Even though I wanted to. But do you have to keep scaring me when you walk on the edge of cliffs or up mountain staircases with no railings like in a previous video. Beautiful filming those horses were something !
I use the top rope solo technique to keep the fall to just a few inches. Also, it allows both partners to climb as it doesn't require a belayer. Of course, you have to have an anchored rope from the top to start with. How close is the nearest hospital in case of an injury?

Thanks for another great and inspiring video! You may think me too conservative, but please consider helmets and an anchor for the belayer, especially Kika. If Dan takes a longer fall, she will go flying into the rock face, risking injury and/or loss of the belay... Love your channel!
I had free climbed for a number of years before my first harness top-rope belay. To this day 30+ years later, I can recall that very odd and discomforting feeling of laying back to be lowered from my first belayed climb. I had even asked if they would mind if I down climbed. Anyone who says they enjoy falling while leading a climb has a certain set destiny with a rock & a hard place. 🙏 ⚓️ ☀️ 🏝 ⛵️ 🧗♂️ From what you shared, you did great, Kika. As usual. Also, it is your wise nature to be apprehensive each time.
Many I mean many years ago I climbed and when we were belaying we always had a prussic knot securing the rope to a secure point on the the ground. The idea was that the prussic easily slid along the rope until someone fell. It was there to provide an alternate support for the rope other than just the person holding the rope at the bottom. In case of an emergency the person on the ground wasn't constrained by having to carry the full load of the climber while letting them back to ground. Your methods may be doing that already, I just haven't seen it in the videos. Keep up the climbing, I always found it to be personally challenging as well as very invigerating.
No. We don’t attach the belayer to the ground (unless belaying from a ledge). That way, when the leader falls, the belayer can jump off the ground and lower the fall force so you don’t bruise your hips. It’s called a “soft catch” and makes climbing much safer and more enjoyable.
It's the short hard falls that destroy your rope, your harness and your back, not to mention the eventual loosenening up of the bolts in soft limestone. Try dynamizing the fall a bit more. Kika should fall into a cushion. Love watching your videos. Hope you'll get to the Calanques near Marseille one day. Great climbing and superb moorings there.
I love the way that Dan doesn't do the male thing of somehow making his girl's safety a result of his actions. He validates and gives Kika back her autonomy. This seems to be one of those rare truly equal partnerships. I suppose it helps that, professionally they are from the same discipline.
Those things remind me of Star Trek series, the original series they had done a whole thing on little pods that looked like that, they were everywhere on the ship. Looks like you found a sweet spot.
If going sailing in warm climes for long periods and like to anchor out, catamaran should work better. Luckily they increase in numbers on used markets and getting cheaper
What fun! Your continuity was a little off though. You were climbing with a couple other boats in the background, then the very next clip, no boats. Then the next clip has only one other boat. Also, there were LOTS of people at that small beach at one point. Wow. I also liked the long distance (sped up) time lapse of all little "ant" people who were all scaling the same rock wall as you.
It isn't the falling that is bad; it is the sudden stop at the end. :-) I thought that stuff you found on the beach was more like horse poop than cow poop and then you showed the horses swimming and that explained it. That round stuff on the beach is horse poop that you were playing with. :-)
We watched a rom-com tonight. We could tell the primary characters were in love and did a good job showing us their truth. Their parents SUCKED, but that is how the story was written. My Becky said to me, "Why don't they just be honest when they talk to each other?" The answer? A lack of conflict makes for a shitty movie. Well, our life and you guy's life is pretty boring because you guys speak the truth to each other. Well done and keep sailing.

Nice work Kika, I have been climbing for around 4 years now and taught a lot of women how to climb. Keep practising your falling and definitely push yourself to take bigger falls. My theory is if you're not falling off sports routes you can definitely try harder. You look so strong and probably can climb way harder! Eventually, you will enjoy falling and have so much fun projecting harder routes and taking big falls. I try and fall off every climbing sports climbing session I do (assuming I am on a safe route- no big ledges) so my body and brain are familiar with the feeling and irrational fear doesn't accumulate. I really hope I see you projecting and taking some big wips in a future video, in the meantime keep enjoying. If you ever sail to Australia (specifically South East Queensland) I could definately show you around our local crags.
Kika, watch Jack Osbourne train for his climb of El Cap. He was afraid of falling to, he used to jump off of a sheer cliff face, just to gain trust in the rope and kit. Dan is right, you will overcome that fear, and I am sure you will be better at climbing than Dan! Go For It!
Fall if you want and put your life in the hands of someone's else's epoxied bolt. I've never felt happy about myself but each to their own. I know a very good climber who bust his leg falling inside on resin - he took whippers every day but it got him in the end

Thanks, we saw these in Sardinia and realized they must be from plants or maybe algae, but this answers the question.

All the Mediterranean beaches are full of these sea balls :) Kika's wonder made me laugh loud, as they are pretty common at the Italian seaside.

Very jealous of your boat, boat life, and the 2 of you seemed to be each others best friend it is beautiful. Not jealous of all the climbing. Well I take that back I wish I didn't have a fear of heights, and could, but I would push myself to hike the trail to the point and that would be about as much as I could psuh myself. You both have such fun personalities. What a wonderful life you have!
I guess you have to weigh everything and evaluate which risk is worth taking. If you fall and are injured, it could potentially stop your sailing for at least a while, having to stay in one place to recover. Sailing has its own risks too. Fear isn’t the biggest enemy really.. I think carelessness is the enemy because then foolish choices are made and consequences happen. You both seem to evaluate well. Just be as careful as you can and know your limits. Then go and enjoy your life 😊

I see the special sea balls your playing with and later you mention swimming horses I already know too much. great work at falling practice to climb you have to fall I used to climb on rocks about maybe 15 feet high even when you land on your prehensil tail do it gracefully and save that crying for the shower everyone falls it's how you get back up

Hey UMA, go online and check out the rocker stoppers to keep your boat from rocking in the heavy swells. It’ll help you tremendously when you’re in these bay/coves so you can get some sleep ,happy sailing !!
We’re familiar with the concept. But don’t actually mind the rocking.
Long lines ashore help a lot, too. They keep your bow facing to the open sea... and you save space for others to anchor in the same spot.

You guys consistently find new places to explore and have fun, which never gets boring to watch. Kika, great job on practicing overcoming your fear of falling. Sometimes you just have to embrace the suck to get over something that causes anxiety to get prepared for a potentially bad situation. Now you'll know what it feels like in a real situation but I hope you will never have to experience a fall and if you do, Dan will catch you as he always does. I thought it was funny you counted down 3-2-1 and held your breath like you were going underwater for the first time. All that was missing was you plugging your nose...lol.
Depending on where you are, if swells are an issue, could you just go onto land and pitch a tent so you can sleep? Perhaps you would be concerned to leave the boat unmanned and on anchor overnight.
The falling practice was really excellent. It was interesting to see how falling above your anchor point is different than falling below it. Kika, As a fellow vertically challenged person, I would say that you are a better climber than Dan if you can do all the climbs that he can. This is because there are hand and footholds that he can reach but for which you need to jump. His height gives Dan a definite advantage. Also, men are naturally gifted with more upper body strength than women, which is an advantage for overhangs and means that you have to work harder. So don't knock yourself at all. You are both definitely awesome, though!!!
You guys are enthralling I couldn't take my eyes off this video Even though I wanted to. But do you have to keep scaring me when you walk on the edge of cliffs or up mountain staircases with no railings like in a previous video. Beautiful filming those horses were something !
I use the top rope solo technique to keep the fall to just a few inches. Also, it allows both partners to climb as it doesn't require a belayer. Of course, you have to have an anchored rope from the top to start with. How close is the nearest hospital in case of an injury?
Challenging, scary, but I bet a lot of fun. And such a beautiful location. Believe in yourself and enjoy the climb.

LUFT TAG , I fail nearly 60 m on Koenig Stein from lead, I finished the route and that was it , You doing great !!!
I had free climbed for a number of years before my first harness top-rope belay.
To this day 30+ years later, I can recall that very odd and discomforting feeling of laying back to be lowered from my first belayed climb. I had even asked if they would mind if I down climbed.
Anyone who says they enjoy falling while leading a climb has a certain set destiny with a rock & a hard place.

From what you shared, you did great, Kika. As usual. Also, it is your wise nature to be apprehensive each time.
Many I mean many years ago I climbed and when we were belaying we always had a prussic knot securing the rope to a secure point on the the ground. The idea was that the prussic easily slid along the rope until someone fell. It was there to provide an alternate support for the rope other than just the person holding the rope at the bottom. In case of an emergency the person on the ground wasn't constrained by having to carry the full load of the climber while letting them back to ground. Your methods may be doing that already, I just haven't seen it in the videos. Keep up the climbing, I always found it to be personally challenging as well as very invigerating.
No. We don’t attach the belayer to the ground (unless belaying from a ledge). That way, when the leader falls, the belayer can jump off the ground and lower the fall force so you don’t bruise your hips. It’s called a “soft catch” and makes climbing much safer and more enjoyable.

It's the short hard falls that destroy your rope, your harness and your back, not to mention the eventual loosenening up of the bolts in soft limestone. Try dynamizing the fall a bit more. Kika should fall into a cushion. Love watching your videos. Hope you'll get to the Calanques near Marseille one day. Great climbing and superb moorings there.

I love the way that Dan doesn't do the male thing of somehow making his girl's safety a result of his actions. He validates and gives Kika back her autonomy. This seems to be one of those rare truly equal partnerships. I suppose it helps that, professionally they are from the same discipline.
Those things remind me of Star Trek series, the original series they had done a whole thing on little pods that looked like that, they were everywhere on the ship. Looks like you found a sweet spot.

If going sailing in warm climes for long periods and like to anchor out, catamaran should work better. Luckily they increase in numbers on used markets and getting cheaper

What fun! Your continuity was a little off though. You were climbing with a couple other boats in the background, then the very next clip, no boats. Then the next clip has only one other boat. Also, there were LOTS of people at that small beach at one point. Wow. I also liked the long distance (sped up) time lapse of all little "ant" people who were all scaling the same rock wall as you.

It isn't the falling that is bad; it is the sudden stop at the end. :-) I thought that stuff you found on the beach was more like horse poop than cow poop and then you showed the horses swimming and that explained it. That round stuff on the beach is horse poop that you were playing with. :-)
Kika rolls her eyes a bit at 13:11. If I had to listen to Dan trying to rationalize innate fears - I'd be doing that too! Probably worse.
We watched a rom-com tonight. We could tell the primary characters were in love and did a good job showing us their truth. Their parents SUCKED, but that is how the story was written. My Becky said to me, "Why don't they just be honest when they talk to each other?" The answer? A lack of conflict makes for a shitty movie. Well, our life and you guy's life is pretty boring because you guys speak the truth to each other. Well done and keep sailing.

Nice work Kika, I have been climbing for around 4 years now and taught a lot of women how to climb. Keep practising your falling and definitely push yourself to take bigger falls. My theory is if you're not falling off sports routes you can definitely try harder. You look so strong and probably can climb way harder! Eventually, you will enjoy falling and have so much fun projecting harder routes and taking big falls. I try and fall off every climbing sports climbing session I do (assuming I am on a safe route- no big ledges) so my body and brain are familiar with the feeling and irrational fear doesn't accumulate.
I really hope I see you projecting and taking some big wips in a future video, in the meantime keep enjoying.

Kika, watch Jack Osbourne train for his climb of El Cap. He was afraid of falling to, he used to jump off of a sheer cliff face, just to gain trust in the rope and kit. Dan is right, you will overcome that fear, and I am sure you will be better at climbing than Dan! Go For It!

Fall if you want and put your life in the hands of someone's else's epoxied bolt. I've never felt happy about myself but each to their own. I know a very good climber who bust his leg falling inside on resin - he took whippers every day but it got him in the end
