    That was a great video. That knife took a beating and even after it broke you could still use it. I think after all that abuse it says a lot of what a great product and chraftmanship. Wow I am truly amazed. Thanks Jacob for taking the time in the cold with your buddy to make this video.

    The secret is a good working ratio between hardness and viscosity. A hard blade will be very sharp, but will break in this situation. A high viscosity steel will only deform, but you'll never get it really sharpe. So ESEE made a very well decision to use C1095 steel. Great knives.

    • @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors
      @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors  6 лет назад +1

      Esee doesn't just get that ratio right, they get it right in every part of the blade, since it is differentially hardened, being softer on the spine (but still hard enough to strike a ferro rod) and harder on the edge. Its on the money!

    I always find it way easier to hack through the first half of the log, then turning it over and hacking through the rest from the other side. Then, for all u smart asses out there, I know u can't do that with ALL 6-8 inch branches, but if I had to do that technique, I'd do it ONCE, as fast up the branch toward the trunk, THEN cut in at 3 r 4 foot pieces.. I know this is a video and he's prob doing that for effect. I'm just saying that incase someone sees that and waste a ton of time and energy cutting through the whole log from 1 direction. Awesome video.

  • @NGMonocrom

    Have to be honest, I've seen quite a few broken ESEE knives in my time. I love their designs, own quite a few. None of mine have broken. But then again, still being honest, I haven't put any of them through a ton of work outdoors. Not saying that the heat treat is bad. But that is often the cause of knives breaking. Usually the #1 cause. I don't think I've ever seen a broken TOPS knife though. They just don't make a lot of designs I'm interested in.

    • @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors
      @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors  4 года назад +3

      I have seen plenty of broken Tops knives- they just arent as popular to share as esee's are because of Esee's warranty, and because Esee doesnt hide anything. With that said, most Tops knives use gaudy aesthetically driven styling and poor edge geometry, so if a crappy knife is unbreakable- its still a crappy knife.

    FINALLY got to watch this video. That was some pretty impressive performance for a blade that is being subjected to such ridiculous abuse. I’ve thrashed on my Junglas pretty hard and have never damaged it. When I was out in December I was splitting some pretty ugly wood with it. It was bent significantly halfway through the piece of wood and came back to perfection when it was done. They aren’t the fanciest blades with the latest super steel, but they sure do perform. Can’t argue with that.

    • @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors
      @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors  6 лет назад +1

      Blue Mountain Bushcraft and Outdoors heck yeah man. When i hear the anti baton crowd, at this point it makes me sick. The amount of abuse than any DECENT knife (that isnt defective of course) can take batoning, even at 3/16" thick, is INSANE.

    • @MichaelTravis12c27
      @MichaelTravis12c27 6 лет назад +2

      ThePreppersBunkerOutdoors agreed. I have a high end knifesmith in my family. I once did a torture test of a 1/8” machete that he made. Differentially treated 01. I did things to that blade that I didn’t expect it to survive. It never broke or bent. If you haven’t gotten one yet, go get a Skrama. You won’t be disappointed.

    Esee, pretty much has a knife, usually at a decent price, ready to go, with a good sheath, for any occasion that I can think of. I really like them. For the guys wanting the 1/4" thick knives, there is the Esee 5. I prefer the Esee 6. I use the 3 the most though. I have thought about getting the Jungles 2. This video definitely pushed me towards it. Thanks.

    I didn't know ESEE did that differential heat treat as well, I thought it was only TOPS. Good to know though. THAT is some impressive 1095 though LOL. I had been thinking about getting the regular Junglas for a while now..but the size and weight is what kept me from it. When this one came out, it jumped right out at me. I love the fact that it comes work ready! Another words, I dont need another sheath, I dont need to replace the scales, its perfect as is. Really like how they combine the really nice molle back with their really nice kydex sheath for it, I had to pay extra to do that with my 5. Great stuff Jacob.

      I never hard use my edged weapons like this but it’s good to know that should I ever have to depend my life on an edged weapon, I’m gonna bring an esee (or 3) :). Looks like it’s time to finally buy that junglas 2!

  • @PowerMadHeadBanger
    @PowerMadHeadBanger 4 года назад +1

    I was watching a review for the same knife on the AdvancedKnifeBro channel and he had a breakage while batoning, which ESEE replaced for him. Now with all the test you did it was pretty established that if there is nothing wrong with steel/heat treatment or whatever the knife won't break under realistic use. The reason I mentioned AdvancedKnifeBro its because his knife had a breakeage with much less, which take to the conclusion that it may be some bad apples among all the knives that leave the factory. So coming to my question, aside from the destruction test that we already have, what would be a realistic test to know if the piece we have is not one of the bad apples? What can we do while camping to test our knife without breaking it to know it won't fail prematurely under a real survival situations?

    • @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors
      @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors  4 года назад +3

      I havent seen that video, but i am VERY surprised to hear those results. I think Esee's quality control is EXCELLENT, HOWEVER there will ALWAYS be a degree of error with anything which is obviously why we expect things to have a warranty- and Esee can have the best warranty because they have faith in their product.
      HOWEVER, no matter the manufacture as you stated, every blade should be used and tested before its REALLY needed- which is the problem with the "i bought this knife for an emergency and its sitting in my dresser" and the "dont baton with your knife" crowds- if you have a glaring defect, average/ hard use will bring it to light, so you know that you can depend on it when the time comes.

      I dont know how i feel labeling it as "just a hunk of 1095"
      To some degree yes, it will be limited by what it is, but i believe they do a good enough job with HT and design to make it more than "just a hunk of 1095" as there are so many 1095 knives out there that are by far inferior

    Bought it online not realizing how big it really is. Love it, but the next one is going to be a 6 or Junglass II.

      Haha this thing went through so much abuse, and honestly, if a knife of this size with a high grind can take this much absuse, why make a knife so much shorter with a stouter grind and even thicker. I would like to use an esee 5, especially after seeing other reviews that were just pathetic, but i would def say its overkill.

    If it’s not 1/4 inch thick with a saber grind like the OKC GEN 2 SP51.in my opinion anyway it will not be a good option as a wilderness survival knife. Because batoning longs up to four inches maybe a little big larger in a wilderness setting for survival purposes will be mandatory.
