Tough reel but the most important thing is to dismantle the reel lube up the pinion gear. The reason for that is that the spool slides to the right hand side when the drag is engaged. I do reel service work part time. I serviced four TLD 20's. Two had seized pinion gears to the drag mechanism. I was able to free one but required parts for the second. Totally avoidable. My recommendation is a carbontex drag upgrade. I have the TLD15, Charter Special. As with all Shimano reels they are under lubricanted from new. Buy one then service correctly. Minimal issues. The North Queensland guys love TLDs. Very hard on gear in the hot tropics of Australia .
Am buying a second hand TLD 20 with a rod tomorrow for only 100 AUD. Thanks to this video, I will be happy with it. I used to always use Penn reels up to 9/0. I reckon that these reels will handle even a small shark.
The Fish Locker Workshop it was never serviced and sat for three years cast it out didn’t get a Birdsnest or nothing everything locked up that’s it fuck you
When targeting larger fish “big mackerel” on the TLD 20, would you have it paired with the ugly stick or would you go for something stiffer? Thanks for the great videos, they really do help 👍
I have 2 shimano charter specials great for drifting light gear over wrecks a tld 25 for conger and a tld 50 for porbeagles they have never let me down but as you say the tld,s are a little heavy.
if you dont mind me asking John , what class rod and what reel were you using when you caught the Blue Fin Tuna , i was shattered just watching those videos HAHAHA ...
Shakespeare Ugly Stick Tiger Elite 50-100lb (A true saltwater rod) will be the minimum option. I have the Shimano Tyrnos 30II Dual Speed paired with a Star Rod 65-200lb Extra Heavy Rod. For trolling, bottom fishing or live bait you should be ready if any big fish bite the hook!

Brilliant video as usual, can I ask how heavy is your rubbing leader and what knot onto braid.
Great video. right to the point. no BS. I've been using a TLD 25 for over 25 years. If it wasn't such a good reel, they wouldn't still be making them
Great Review. Thank you Sir

- That was a bigger rod and reel. Send me a PM to the fish locker fb page. ;)
Cant get a 20 two speed what do you think about a Shimano TLD 30IIA do you think that would be to big for a 30-50lb Shakespeare ugly stick gx2 ???

I have the Same one but my Drag doesnt work
Can you help me?
Do you cast these or use them for just bottom fishing?
could you use one of these for catfishing?
This type of reels can pull up from de ocean amberjacks, barracudas and sharks. Catfishes will be like Tilapias for the TLD!
Does the 20A 2speed have level wind?..

Hello,
and what is the braid capacity?
- I think I say in the video? It will depend on the diameter of course. But I have cheap 60lb Spectra and it gets 400 yards no problem.
Take a stupid amount of braid i 2/3 fill with cheap mono then put on 300yards of braid usually 65lb whiplash and a leader of 80lb mono
