Hey now I still have my ugly stick 40-80 H 8', since 1998. Let me tell, it's still a beast! Ugly sticks are always a great choice. It's my go to for stripers and tautogs
Mono vs braid- Ande mono is the only mono made which can be used for fish weight records.. Braid- I never saw one certified to set records with... Mono will not cut through your prop shaft if it should get in the prop and you can't remove it at sea- Braid will cut into your prop shaft and destroy your prop seal, if it gets in your prop and you can't remove it at sea... I do not allow Braid on my boat for any reason... Mono stretch- I have never witnessed it occur- ever- all of my deep drop electric reels have mono, 50 lb all others have 30 to 40 lb max..... If I want to fish with string I'll take my Dad's 1960's 10/0 out... To each their own ... Great review and the Penn is an outstanding reel... Peace...
@@SaltyStrikes In the Gulf when the current is moving fast, fighting wind and swells I've had one of my fishing guest get their lines in one of my props sometimes both props... twice I had to go overboard to free the line from the props and after returning to the Marina the next day pulling the props there was line still on the shaft behind the props.. My Uncle who runs charters had a prop shaft badly damaged by braid just from the run back into the dock- that's allot of money replacing a prop shaft... In single engine bay boats where you will not run into adverse conditions with lines out and people fishing that are seasoned fishermen/women I guess braid is OK- for me I'll stick with Ande.......
You’re missing out on a lot of advantages, completely shunning braid. I do understand your position being a charter boat captain. Mono and braid both have their place. Line class records are based on the leader size. Every kind of line can be used for records. For tournaments, there’s a lot of tournament specific line out there. Btw, mono absolutely stretches. That’s one of the biggest advantages to mono.
I agree 100% on Ugly sticks- they are bullet proof and the #1 feature preferred are the steel ferules vs carbon insert ferules which pop out and your rod is done.. The wife had a custom build Rod for me as a gift- on the first trip a carbon insert pop out of the ferule -80 Dollars to repair- after the repair I sold it and bought 3 ugly sticks that are still going strong after 5 years..
hi! you did mention that this overhead reel is like spinning reel that has a one way dragging system.. correct me if i am wrong. Actually your review inspires me to buy one soon. thank you
I also have expensive reels on ugly stiks. I can't have one of those fragile rods that's gotta be treasured and babied. I beat up my rods and toss them in the back of my pickup. Its the Toyota Hilux truck of rods. that's why I love ugly sticks.
I've gone through a lot of reels offshore. You'll outgrow these reels and get something with real power and a serious drag after a few big fish trash you. Just get an Okuma Alijos/Makaira SEA or Penn VISX. Almost twice as much but you'll be happier in the long run.

Thank you for the information on this type of reel. I am a newbie and I am trying to learn as much as I can.
Super helpful! Thanks for talking about line weights, top shots & leader.
… are you new to the channel? Welcome aboard, I try to talk gear at the end of my regular fishing video. Hope they help 👍

… does your line wrap around the prop often? We’ve never had it happen.

It’s a “conventional reel” I’m not sure what you mean by “one way drag”, all drags only work in one direction. Hope that helps.
I have the same exact reel
Love it.
I bought it for German catfish
What size of Ugly Stik is that? I followed the link below but usure what size and action that is. Thank you. Wanting to order one for my son.
@@luisbaez9278 6’6” medium heavy
It would probably be a good reel for a slow pitch set up

Star drags don’t necessarily have level wind.

What pole do you have that reel on?
