- I do not own this impossible to find TV rarity. Please view responsibly! They showed this pilot like 2-3 times a week for an entire summer and sadly it never got picked up.
Island City Pilot aired 1994.
Sorry for the commercials but hey, they are historical artifacts at this point.
I remember watching this when I was about 13 and loved it and always wondered way there wasn't any more episodes and later found out it wasn't popular. But I wish they had it would have been a great show.
The reason there was no more episodes. Was because it was a pilot and they were trying to find somebody to back it and nobody wanted to back it
@@charleschadwick5686 If Time Trax hadn't gotten a 2nd year, this would have probably been backed by those people. While this was an entertaining concept, they should have put a bit more money into the special effects and broadened the story more. There was just the main plot and a small subplot with the Doctor's sister. While the main plot was ok, the subplot was lame.
I have seen some crazy pilots for shows and even crazier screenplays that never got turned into a show or a movie. My wife used to be an actress (retired), but she hated it and only appeared in 10 movies, one for her dad who was the director, and 9 others for some of her friends in the business. Because her brother is a well-known actor and her father is the biggest actor/director in the last 50 years, I got to meet a lot of studio Execs and saw some of the craziest ideas out there lol. And yes, I'm sure you can guess who my famous father-in-law is, if you can't yet, once you do it will "make your day" LOL.
This show pilot was so memorable to me that despite there never being more episodes, I still have such distinct memories of seeing it, despite it being when I was a teenager and never being shown on television again. I can see where they went wrong in terms of mainstream appeal, but I feel like their base concept was really good. If someone could take the rights and redo this as a modern-style, darker and more realistic type of post-apocalyptic sci-fi, I feel like this could be a good series.
I remember watching this when I was a kid and didn't really understand it, but I loved it and randomly think about it. So I'm really excited to find it.

Finally ! It took me 25 years to find this i even wasn't anymore sure this war real. I only remembered mutants and matching crystals it was once show on our local television at night !

Yeah, I remember mutants, crystals, and a lot of scenes of driving places. Oh, and the giant force field.
I have been trying to find this for about 20 years in any format. I would love for them to put it out on DVD. It was great being able to see it again, thanks for uploading it.
Wow, it's been 20 years since I've seen this! I found this video after 10 minutes of Google searching using keywords I could remember from the show. The show doesn't even show up on various "obscure 90's sci-fi lists" all over the internet.

you're welcome. took me like a month to find this. i don't normally post stuff like this on youtube but in this case it felt mandatory! when i was a kid i was sort of confused by this show.. they showed it like once a week but there was never any new episodes.. i couldn't tell if it was a movie or what but i watched it every week for like a year straight.

Wow that's exactly how I found it! I watched it once as a kid and always remembered the strange premise. I searched future, city under glass dome.
hwhack they spent some serious money on sets and props. wonder whatever happened to those 2 vehicles?
Took me 25 years to find this lol 1/4 century , it was once shown at night on local Latvian TV station, than i couldn't find it anymore so i begun to think that maybe i have imagined this/fake memories etc but thanks finally i could have inner peace !
Still one of my favorite shows, it is a shame that it never got the backing it should have.

A sudden memory of this show popped into my head. I think it aired my freshman year of high school, over and over, and over. I liked it as a kid. Happy to see it still exists here.
This came out when I was 14! lol. I remember watching this when it aired on TV originally and thankfully, mom taped it and we would watch it every now-and-then and for some odd reason, I got the idea to look it up on RUclips and well, here it is! I was hoping someone had it. Thanks!

Hard to believe this show aired 24 years ago. I actually recorded it on vhs because they used to play it a lot on tv. I had looked up in the TV guide when it was going to be on again so I could tape it. Lol. My family and I loved it. I was sad it was never made into a series. I would have watched it for sure. Always thought Lt. Michael Mende looked like Patrick Swayze. He was handsome for a half recessive! Haha. Thanks for posting this. You can buy this on dvd now too!
LOL try explaining to people that waaay back in the 80-90s. you had to read a thick book when something (might) come one. The VCR MIGHT get it....lol but why it took almost 10 years for someone to say: that's fucking sucks! to make a DVR is a mistery.

Thanks so much for posting this! I found it by recalling it starred the ship captain from Starship Troopers (Brenda Strong) and worked backwards from there. Such a great concept. Too bad it never got picked up. I can't remember names of people I've met a half dozen times, but I remember a failed pilot from 23 years ago, when I was a senior in college. Sigh... PS - I'd forgotten Eric McCormick was in this. He's great in his own awesome sci fi series Travellers (tho most know him from Will and Grace).
I remember this because it starred the voice of Batman from the animated series (Kevin Conroy). It's really too bad it never got picked up, it had a very interesting premise. Now if only I can find a song that even the internet claims doesn't exist...
I Remember being on set!! Dallas Texas 1993, it was a lot of fun 44:01....If it got picked up I would've been on every episode!! ...Haven't seen this in a long time!!! THANK YOU for posting it !!! My kids love it!!

So, in this unwanted pilot from 1994 you have Google Glass, SIM Cards, Oculous rift VR, and biometric scanners. Weird how things turn out, no?Also, great find; saw this one night back in the 90's and always wondered about it.
I remember watching this when I was a kid. I liked it then and liked it again watching it now. It would have for an interesting series. there are a lot of cool sci-fi concepts. This is a unique and fun pilot about an intriguing plot.
Basically its the premise of a lot of things. But The Last Man on Earth was the start of this trend in movies and TV. This just has a City of people instead of one person. Most people would recognize it as the base story from the will Smith incarnation "I am Legion" or the very Groovy 70's version "Omega Man"
I showed this to my 17 year old niece last year. She said it reminded her of Stargate Atlantis. Then she wanted to start watching that again. Lol. So we did!
God I forgot how many damn movie previews were at the beginning of VHS tapes! lol

Island city is truly a gem but hard to find in DVD or VHS or blue ray.
I remember seeing this as kid - still remember it and finaly stumbled on it. It is sad it did not got to full tv show.

I remember this, but I couldn't even begin to look it up without any recollection of the name. Thank you for posting. I thought it was pretty cool as a kid, especially because I didn't feel like sci-fi was as popular as it is today or back in the 70s. I got this as a suggestion because I was watching Genesis II.

BTW when I first read the title of this video I thought the film was called "Island City Pilot" - I imagined a futuristic city that had completely covered an island like Singapore where people travelled around in small aircraft, including taxis piloted by...

This movie popped into my head all of a sudden. I was 17 when I watched this movie and loved it. I wish that they had made this into a tv show. But it was too expensive at that time.

I haven't seen this since I was a kid to bad there aren't anymore episodes. I like how were shitty at genetic manipulation but were good with teleportation portals, force fields and other advancements.

Been looking for this. Couldn't remember the name. I liked it. I remember it came out during a year they tried starting close to 6 different sci fi series on regular channels. None of them were popular enough for the networks so they killed all of them. Too bad, they weren't half bad pilots.
yeah Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was the only survivor from that era and even that hardly passed the critics at first, even though it's a classic now.
I had the luck to see it in public tv in Chile, but never found it afterwards, not even when I finally got internet. Thanks so much for sharing :)
I am so happy I was able to find Island City (1994 film); it was great when I was able to see it in the 90s and it would've been a great tv series - someone pick it up for a reboot now, please!

I remember when I first watched it on TV all those years ago, they had a scene where the cool half-recessive guy is working out on a treadmill, and they show that he has enhanced endurance and other superior physical qualities. I didn't see that scene in this video.

Having a better understanding of human nature and accepting it as such makes this a very interesting movie series. Even the dialog has been well written to convey these concepts. Not all creatures are created with all equal intelligence, abilities or capacities. Acceptance of that fact and working within those limitations are essential to the life of all. These limitations can be overridden to a degree with understanding and technology, but they cannot be ignored. .... ie. I am 66 years old, 5.35 feet tall, male, IQ 135, and caucasian. None of those can be altered without harm in some form.
So they explained the recessives. What happened with the crazy weather? And why are there so many diseases? I have so many questions!
Futuristic wasteland is indistinguishable from Texas :)

I remember this. They showed it on the local Fox channel. I really thought it was going to end up airing right after Star Trek. This should be revisited. It'll probably be cheaper, considering the ease of CGI these days,

I used to watch this as a kid. The surprising thing is I recognize the elevators in the elevator scene. They were filmed on location in Dallas at Plaza of the Americas. I have actually ridden the real cars.

i remember this! i really liked the pilot and was sad that it didn't get picked up, its really good. they should re-do it now, with all these vampire/supernatural shows, it would prob get better ratings and the fan girls would love it

Memorable for me because it was the first time I saw Kevin 'Batman' Conroy on screen, as well as the first time I fell in love with Brenda Strong.
I always thought that this was a pilot, for a series. I was disappointed when it didn't make the cut. But one question where did you find, this movie?
I liked this pilot a lot and wish they could do a re-launch. The city was set in the desert because the recs could live in the temperate zones-America could produce millions of recs-enough to overwhelm a city that wasn't protected by being in the desert.

Many thanks for posting. Pretty good overall & it's a shame they never mad any more. However, with a slightly different premise, angels instead of regressives & 20 odd years later, you could say that there are a number of similarities between this pilot & the Dominion TV series i.e. the last of humanity holed up in one city with the monsters ruling the outside world.

Thanks I remember seeing this in a late movies show on TV, remembered it as de literal translation in Spanish (ciudad isla), but it was really hard to find with that name. It had a very promising plot, the characters (except for Helen) did an acceptable job at acting and well, it is a shame it got canned.
Perhaps netflix can pick this up and develop it? @netflix
*The one thing I always remembered from this show was the colored gems they wore on their bodies. I know it was a plot point in the show, but I thought it was a great idea for society. Everyone could wear a certain colored gemstone to tell everyone around them their relationship status. White for married, Black for "leave me alone", Green for sex, Red for Love, Blue for Gay, Pink for Lesbian, etc. And these gems would be predominant on their necklaces, or rings, or earrings... etc.
This should at least have gotten a 8 episode order. I think Mr. Mindy def would've been the fan favorite as the Worf of the group. I really hope in the non-existent series finale all the people were cured of being Recessives.
In fact, I had seen around 11 episodes of this series before FOX canceled it. - It is the good shows which they don't keep.
Looks as thought Glassner understood that when he when with doing Star Gate SG-1. (He must have informed Brad Wright of that since they managed 10 seasons.

Last time I saw this I was 11. Im now 37. It's ashamed that this wasn't picked up for tv. This would be a great show.

My memory of this was seeing it as a kid! Turns out I was 21!?!? WTF, lol....
If I am right this was on around 1994. While back in the NY tristate area it was on the newly formed UPN network. Like many other pilots before this it never gained traction. The film Planet Earth from 1973 should have been made into a series but it was never picked up.

This was one of the last productions before Lorimar ended as a production company in 1993. Maybe that was one of the main reason it was not picked up as a television series.
