18:26 is why VTM is so much better than a lot of the AWD systems on the market. It’s ability to redirect power to other wheels in quick manner allows it to do so much more. In Snowy and icy conditions it’s a real confidence booster. Drove an older pilot through a blizzard from Minnesota to Texas and had no worries while many AWD vehicles were stuck off on the side of the road.
I live in Chicago and I am looking for my next vehicle. I am leaning towards getting a FWD instead of a AWD. I've been driving FWD for over 20 years and only got stuck in the snow twice. But when I did get stuck, nearly everyone got stuck. I'm thinking a good set of tires and I'll save a few thousand dollars on cost and maintenance. I tend to keep my cars forever.

My friends Honda Civic already needed wheel bearings and a new CVT transmission before 30k miles. Turbo 1.5 is burning 2 quarts of oil every 1500 miles. Honda said a quart every 500 miles is normal. I've owned Toyotas and Honda's all my life before hand. But today's Honda's and Toyotas are no where as reliable as they use to be. As for me, even with it's flaws, the Honda Passport is a great value. For the price of a RAV4 trail, you can buy the superior Passport. And it will have a great resale. That's the only this FCA doesn't have. Even though my Fiat had all it's maintenance done, it's only worth 300 dollars.
you hit the nail on the head. I can't justify the $$$ on a Grand Cherokee or Wrangler considering the reliability ratings. Patriot/Cherokee/Liberty are small. If you want to go up in size/cargo and want a brand known for reliability but can do some snow, dirt roads, etc., it looks great.

I wish it was the 10 spd too but in reality all automatics are lazy on the downshift these days and it’s done on purpose for higher mpg BUT on a positive note at least it’s not a pos CVT.
Honda 4 Life I could be wrong but might not have a v6 , because this 3.5 has plenty of torque available so no need for a 10 spd I have a 2019 pilot 6spd and love it just like my accord

Thanks for including this in your test it was very helpful. I had a 2012 Honda Pilot but did not like the new version that looks like a mini van. I switched to a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and it has proven to be exceptional in snow and challenging conditions. I will have to check out this Honda Passport Elite and see the cost of a Grand Cherokee in a similar trim?
Y'know, having been offroading with Subarus for the past couple years, I'm pleasantly surprised to see the new Passport's capability. As a matter of fact, just this past summer, I visited Moab/Arches on a cross country road trip and did some offroading with an old, lifted, kitted out Impreza wagon. Seeing the Passport handle a lot of the same terrain we did is really impressive, however I would NEVER take it off road with those 20" wheels, lol. Too little sidewall, too likely to bend wheels and blow tires. I bet it would do even better with the smallest possible diameter wheels and some decent all-terrain tires!
Fantastic review as usual. I really like it. Have always thought the Pilot is just way too big. I think it's priced a tad too high though. Both the CRV and Forester come in about $5K cheaper for their base models. I know this is a different, larger class of "tweener" vehicle, but is it really worth the $5K premium. I think it should start at $28K-29K. Still, looks to be like a really nice vehicle and I'm sure it will sell really well.

Great review! Love the looks of the new Passport. Although, what I really don't like is when auto manufacturers place the reverse or turn signal lights in the rear bumper. On some vehicles they look fine, however, on most they don't. Way too low and sometimes not visible if looking from inside another car.
@@NONARCS I had an Odyssey a few weeks ago and I averaged 24 mpg doing about 60/40 city/highway. It did very well, IMO! It was very fast too! I'm glad Honda still uses the J series V6, it may be one of tge best engines ever!
Another youtube reviewer analyzed and pointed out that SH-AWD is nearly mechanically identical but programmed differently -- u can see it in how the vehicle behaves at 19:20 - ish.. Notice how the front tires r kicking up dirt -- thats fwd bias, sh-awd seems to allow you to kick out the rear more often with rwd bias to help you keep tighter turns. Both seem to get the job done, shawd just looks funner.
The only thing I would do is get an after market set of smaller diameter wheels and add beefier all terrain tires. Other than that I really like this Passport. Love the production quality of this video, it was very entertaining to watch especially the aerial views and the western themed music.
I have a 2012 Ford escape. I love the box look of it. This Honda reminds me of a solid box look suv. Some of the new SUVs are idk smaller more aerodynamic looking. Gonna have to test drive this. Thanks for making this video.
I love how Honda has kept the J series V6 alive, I have a 04 Acura TL which has a 3.2L j series SOHC 4 valves per cylinder and the sound is very similar to the engine sound here, you can definitely hear the VTEC engage
I agree, column shifter for the win! I absolutely cannot stand the massive center consoles in new cars. We rented a Nissan Armada SL recently and the front passenger legroom is so cramped for such a massive bus, due to the ginormous center console taking up almost all of the would-be useful foot space. And they claimed the Chevy Astro had bad foot room...
I also find myself having to take my eyes off the road to select the right bloody shift mechanisms which really bothers me.... I hate the shifter in this and the Acura MDX. It was the only reason I went to the Toyota Highlander. Whyyyyy did they change it??
Honda should make this thing look more like a truck with part time 4 wheel drive like real truck based suvs and come with more aggressive tires from the factory
I owned a 1996 Passport. Thing was great in the snow and never had an issue mechanically. Unfortunately the frame rusted out and could never pass inspection and had to send it to the crusher. RIP

Elite also has a heated steering wheel. Getting my new copper black elite in two days. Traded in my 2015 srt jeep which I know I will regret but I needed a more year round and better commuter for a recent move. Last Honda product I had was an 08 MDX which had a similar driving experience to this on my brief test ride in the passport. What's amazing is my Jeep is way smaller inside yet is 5200 pounds. Thousand pounds heavier! 475hp obviously made up for that. For a 4.5 year old sport SUV with 65000 miles of smiles I got 34000$ on trade. Picked up my new passport for dealer cost 40,700$.
Yep, no fan of thin tires...bad riding quality where every little bump is felt, possible bent rims if you hit any pothole bigger than a basketball (and there are A LOT out there in the cities these days). At least let us get the top end option with the bells and whistles and choose thicker tires via inch or two smaller rims. Why not just put hard tires with no air in them like the very first cars built in the early 1900s? We're heading that way anyway. Those were organ-damaging vehicles on mostly dirt/gravel roads of the time, except most cars couldn't/wouldn't top 25 mph back then.
I absolutely love my Passport! I take it offroading and camping. It handles the abuse like a champ! Well, it's not quite the same Passport...mine is a 1999, a bit more suited for harder trails
I really like this new Honda and I'm glad they gave it a V6 instead of a turbo 4. I just wish the it wasn't styled so closely to the Pilot and instead had more squared-off truckish appearance. This will be a hit with buyers though.

If you are not a Honda enthusiast, the addition of the Passport into the lineup could be very confusing. We have to travel back in time (at least 10 years) when AWD crossovers were becoming popular. Subaru was breaking ground with the Outback and Forester. The Idea of a "fuel efficient" crossover was becoming popular with "hard core" sedan owners. This was an entirely different demographic from the mid-sized SUV buyer. A wagon was out of the question! Americans hate wagons (unless they are Subaru buyers). So Honda built a giant Hatchback (Crosstour) with AWD that was made of spare parts from almost every car they made. It was ugly to most people, but it was a very fine car indeed. It just wasn't the vehicle people wanted. Honda completely missed the mark building the Crosstour (which was a brilliant car that nobody liked) and decided to whack 6 inches off the Pilot SUV and fill the empty slot that was reserved for the "sport wagon" segment. This is the best "compromise" between both worlds of sedan and SUV. It's a hardcore chassis that can take off-road abuse, but it has superb road manners. Honda decided to lean more SUV than sedan for this market and I think more buyers will be happy. I just wanted everybody to know that Honda tried to do it the other way and it didn't work.
Will be my next vehicle in 2021. Will buy a low mileage 2020 unless new incentives are excellent. Hoping to find something in an elite trim with 20k or below mileage in silver, blue or white.

Adaptive cruise control doesn't work below 20 mph, meaning it can't be used in traffic, which is one of the best use cases. Very disappointing for a $44,000 car in 2019, especially when other cheaper Hondas like the CR-V already include ACC down to 0.

J series have always been sohc, or one cam per bank, only c30/32 in the nsx have been dohc, and on the new nsx of course

I’ve had a 2005 Honda CR-V and a 2006 Toyota 4Runner since each was new, and this may be the perfect combination of both and my next new vehicle.
With all this love for cuv's and suv's I really wish they would bring the element back.

This is the best "compromise" between both worlds of sedan and SUV. It's a hardcore chassis that can take off-road abuse, but it has superb road manners. Honda decided to lean more SUV than sedan for this market and I think more buyers will be happy. I just wanted everybody to know that Honda tried to do it the other way and it didn't work.
The shorter length really makes the look suit the passport better than the pilot i think. Its actually really attractive

I love the fact they didnt put a turbocharged engine in the passport. I hate turbos in anything but sports cars or diesels.
Adaptive cruise control doesn't work below 20 mph, meaning it can't be used in traffic, which is one of the best use cases. Very disappointing for a $44,000 car in 2019, especially when other cheaper Hondas like the CR-V already include ACC down to 0.
If you turn on sand mode, the engine actually allow the rev to go higher before shifting and it also become much more responsive.

The AWD Pilot gets 19/26/22 MPG. I could maybe understand having that same MPG, but how can the Passport be worse?? Same engine and less weight, it doesn't make sense.
Makes no sense. Plus that engine is nowhere near what they can do with an affordable NA V6. They are literally raiding 20 Yr old tech here because cheap gas.

It's on the RDX AWD. But it's not been to a V6 AND AWD. I heard somewhere its because Honda has a contract with ZF. Correct me if I'm wrong.
