Wow. You don’t go far enough back for me! I was wearing makeup in high school in 1972! Cover girl foundation, roller ball lip glosses, Maybelline ultra lash, probably some cheap cover gurl lipstick…. Yes I loved the Noxema scent in the foundations! Makeup has come such a LONG way since then!!
I was a teen in the 80's too. Makeup has improved in the drugstore but I really wish they had not discontinued foundations that felt lightweight and didn't break me out. For some reason almost every drugstore foundation breaks me out. Revlon had 2, one I used through my 20's, 30's and 40's called New Complexion makeup. Once it was discontinued in my 40's I tried their Nearly Naked foundation. Was only around 2 years. I waisted so much money trying things that either don't look good or break me out. CYO I got too and it is beautiful, also discontinued. Strangely enough, a $3.00 I believe, foundation from AOA is does not break me out. Hoping it is not discontinued too in the future. They put acne causing ingredients in so many foundations, most people I guess are not sensitive to them.
I'm an older subscriber. I remember using Max Factor Erace concealer in a tube on the lips in the 1960s when I was in high school. It was part of the British Mod look with Twiggy lashes and light lips. Also remember Max Factor Pan-Stik cream foundation. Love the history behind products.
I'll be 40 this year and remember using my moms Max Factor makeup to learn as a teenager. Anyone here remember Jane makeup? As a 90s teen with babysitting money to burn, this was my fave brand of the time. Revlon Rum Raisin was my lipstick color all 4 years of high school!
Thank you for including the history for all the products and brands. I'm 46 so I remember makeup from the 90s so well. My favorite mascara back then was the L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black. That was my jam!
In the late 60's I remember a Covergirl foundation with Noxema. I would use it on my occasional breakout and it cleared it up in 24 hrs. I always loved the Noxema fragrance.
I just turned 40 this year and the 90’s were my first steps into makeup and for lips it was - a darker lip liner with a lighter lipstick to fill them in and you could not be caught without some type of roller ball lip gloss 😊
I'm 51 now, was 18 in October 1990, and I remember wearing my CG clean foundation 2 shades lighter than my skin tone; having a super pale face was really on trend. Then the thin brow, like the 30s, and Rum Raisin lipstick. I didn't wear much eyeshadow, just black eyeliner. And I sometimes used dark brown eyeliner as a lip liner with a lighter lipstick,.blended together. It doesn't seem like it was over 30 yrs ago! Seems like 2 yrs ago...😮😢 I miss those times...it was one of the best times of my life!! Now off to repurchase Rum Raisin lipstick ❤🥂💃🏼🎉
Omg… i loved that shade!I believe they still sell that color.. I remember my parents telling me how that color made look like a corpse.. lol.. because it was so dark and made my face look whiter.. ahh where did the time go???😢
Yep we loved the pale face and dark lip thing. We never wore false lashes or bronzer, that was too 60s or 70s. I am with you, it all seems like a few years ago, not 30 years ago. I felt like we looked good, but when I see Madonna with that pale face back in the day I bet we didn't. 😀
One of my favorite makeup brands in the 90's was Jane. Still have one of their gray eyeliners. Loved their red brown lipstick. Glad Clinique Black Honey is still around. I wore Loreal Lashout mascara religiously, broke my heart when they stopped production. Bought it off of Ebay as long as it I could find it.
YESSS! I loved Jane too! I had that red-brown lipstick from them! I wore it down to nothing! They made a comeback several years back but have since disappeared again. Would have been fun to feature them in this video. :)
Talking about vintage makeup, I'm 61 and remember the 1970's makeup so well...I grew up in Perth Western Australia (yep) all jokes aside.... I remember so many trends...Yardley pot o gloss in the shades walnut and burgundy were amazing colors but so thick, everything stuck to my lips 😂
I’ve always wanted to visit Perth! Oh my gosh that gloss reminds me of my favourite one from elf, although it’s in a tube not a pot so at least things can’t get in the packet. I have several shades. Everything gets in it because I always put too much on, but I love it so much that no matter how much I remind myself that there’s less sticky glosses available I keep buying it 😂 If I’d been alive then I’d have done the same thing!!!
Benefit's cheek tint being introduced to color nipples blows my mind! Speaking of Max Factor, his Pan Stik foundation remains without compare. Stick foundation would be expected to be heavy. Pan Stick was lightweight, full coverage and long wearing. I loved it!
Have been using Coty airspun powder since I was a teenager and I'm about to turn 59. Love it as much today as a more mature lady as I did when I was 16 years old.
I loved Max Factor! I started wearing makeup on the 90's and the pancake foundation from him was my go to! Bamboo bronze from Revlon lipstick. Anyone remember the Revlon Outrageous shampoo in the red bottle? With Cindy Crawford as the model in the commercial... That stuff smelled HEAVENLY. I wish that stuff was still around.
Ah, memories. Wore Max Factor Pancake for years and it was one of the few foundations available that worked for oily skin. My friend who had dry skin loved their Panstick. I still have multiple brown lipsticks from the Sephora brand. Back then, they had a massive array of lipstick colors and textures ... even a yellow I used to tame my too purplish lips.
@@cm_mbI remember in the late eighties they had a range of eyeshadow singles that were ahead of their time - even a red one. I also loved their Revved up Coral lippie.
Loved the Max Factor products. I still have an unopened cream puff pressed powder in my makeup museum. The shade was called "Gay Whisper" (warm medium). It was a great formula and shade to use on many caucasian men for television back in the day. Thanks for the memories ❤
This was such a great trip down memory lane. RUM RAISIN, I wore it a lot! ❤ However, the most interesting fact that you shared was about the Yves St. Laurent, “clicker pen.” Only a mom could think of something so wonderful.😊
Fun facts: You can make your own stain/dye using beet root juice. The original pioneer hair dye was just the iodine from the black walnut green hulls. It can also be used as wood stain. This will stain your skin for weeks if you’re not careful. You can steep lemon balm , chamomile, and lavender and use that water to mix with fresh aloe for a skin soothing and moisturizing gel that’s very gentle.
I'm telling on myself, but CoverGirl's Clean liquid foundation has actually been around since the 1970's. I wore it in high school. Thanks for the stumble down memory lane, Zabrena!
Went down memory lane with all the products in this video! I used and still use Clinique’s Black Honey, wore Revlon’s Rum Raisin too! As a teenager (long, long ago) I used Bonnie Bell products which were drugstore and affordable.
My first foundation was the Covergirl Clean Foundation in the late 60's. It's still sold at Walmart, Dollar General, CVS and Walgreens drugstores. A few friends of mine still use it.
Yes! Rum Raisin & Toast of New York were next to each other on the Revlon color chart. I liked them both. Has anyone seen Toast of NY or is it discontinued?
Lol, my dad also HATED brown lipstick in the 90s and for a couple years he refused to let me wear it. I had to wear my friends' lipstick at school. I loved the taupe cool toned brown (almost a silvery purple sheen) from Wet n Wild. I wish their stuff was still $1.
It's so funny Zabrena. I started using Noxema as a teenager and have used it off and on my whole life. I'm 65 now. In fact I've been using it for the last 2 weeks. It really helps wake me up in the morning. I love the smell of the eucalyptus. Also do u remember Yardley lipstick? It was my first lipstick at about 13 or 14 in soft pink. The tube was blue and white stripes. If I close my eyes I can almost smell it. :)
Girl yes!!!!! I've bought so many rum raisin lipsticks!!!!! Then, I went looking for it and it was gone and something told me to look again a few years ago and I found it and I bought ALL but one at Walmart!!!!! That was and still is my favorite lipstick color.....
OMG rum raisin!!! I think a relative who lived in the US had gifted it to my mom (we live in India), but because she used to wear red shades, she let me take it to play with (I was definitely under 10 years old, I'm almost 39 now). Somehow it was so stuck in my memory that I repurchased the shade last year and it's so extremely beautiful!!! I hope they never discontinue it 🙏🏼
I love it when you do these videos with all the history behind the makeup products - it's so interesting to learn how they got their start. I still use the Cody Airspun powder and the Clinique Black Honey. They're two of my go to products. And, quick tip you probably already know but just in case, Revlon has a dupe for the Chanel Vamp nail polish in the shade Vixen. 🙂
YES!!!! Get into the history makeup niche!!!! I can imagine you making some great videos that tie in with all the Uber popular millennial and y2k nostalgia shorts!
I never understood why i related UD to Gwen Stefani and music festivals, but you just helped me figure it out! Thank you! I am an '81 baby and as a 90s kid i wore Max Factor Pan Stick, brown eyeshadow and as much mascara as my lashes could hold. This was such a fun video!
Continually come back to your videos because you radiate so much light and positivity…such an oasis in digital world where shock, criticism and cruelty abound. Keep up the wonderful work!
I remember all of these products- as I was, also a teenager in the 90’s. It’s so funny to watch this video as a history lesson. Now, I’m feeling so old. 😅❤
Rum Rasin was the only lipstick shade I wore in the 90's. I loved it. Being a redhead it was hard to find shades that didn't clash with my hair and skin.
I wanted you to know that I really enjoyed this video Zabrena!! As someone who graduated high school in the early nineties, I definitely remember a bunch of the products and history behind them. Thanks for sharing! Sending you lots of love 🤍🤍🤍
do you remember ultima II 'the nakeds' collection? i was O B S E S S E D and was the happiest teenager on earth when i got the set for christmas (when they used to sell those holiday sets). that defined the 90s for me.
Oh my goodness I am so glad you mentioned the Nakeds. I remember obsessing over the entire line because it was so different. I finally got a lipstick and blush and was in heaven. It seems like right after that the mainstream lines starting selling those browner colors and the Nakeds collection and the whole Ultima line was discontinued. I actually remember the great Kevin Aucoin creating that line and making over women on some daytime show I can't remember. The woman hosting was in 80s mode with bold color and she was freaking out. So funny 😀
Flashback! This was such a great video. I loved the history lessons about different makeup brands. I remember when some of these were launched or came ‘into fashion.’ Memories of high school wearing brown lipstick and Covergirl powder came flooding back. I remember when Vamp nail polish was sooo popular as well as Rum Raisin lipstick. And I remember buying my first tube of Black Honey lipgloss at the Clinique counter. I think all of these are still as fashionable as they once were. Thanks for taking us down memory lane!💕
Such a nice walk down memory lane! I live in Vienna (Austria) and we still have Max Factor. Back in the 90ties I loved their mascara and a mauve lip liner which is perfect for me. I still have a tiny rest of it around as my guide when buying a very natural liner. Yes to Rum Raisin, owned this colour as well! And eyeliner ... used a ton of it.
I LOVE THIS!! Noxema was so popular that I, as a dry skin girl, used it. And used it so much that my mom would put it in my Christmas stocking! 🤣 My first ever UD product was a lipstick called Gash, and I thought I was such a bada$$ wearing it.
An idea! MAKEUP BRAND STORIES from start to now! You telling the story while applying products from the brand.. that’s would be amazing!! I really enjoyed the stories you were including in the video and would love to hear the full stories for each brand.
I've worn Revlon's rum raisin since the 90s and I still wear it a lot to this day. I always get compliments when I wear it. I really miss that amazing 2000 calorie mascara from Max Factor. It's hard to find one as good these days.
Omg I love these types of historical videos as only Zabrena can do! I still LOVE and use all Urban Decay products! Coffee Bean lipstick was my jam in the 90s!!! ❤️
That ending: I almost spat my drink out laughing thinking to myself, "she's gonna blooper this I just know it!" I miss your historically accurate series so much, Z. I love your takes and research on the cosmetic industry. And no one can forget Mac 'Paramount' which soared to heights thanks to Jennifer Aniston. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Yes, I remember many of those products from the 90s and before then! The quality of most makeup has improved so much over the decades. Thankfully! I remember Clinique Black Honey, I loved it. Also 2000 calorie mascara used to be pretty good! Of course Great Lash by Maybelline was my go to. I loved Gemminese eyeshadows, they were creamy, long-lasting powders, way ahead of their time. The color range was unique for back then also. And many of us wore brown lipstick, brown with little other hues. The more brown, the better! Except on us fair skinned gals it would start to look a bit ghoulish! 😮 😁
This video brought the nostalgia back! Revlon Color Stay was a game changer. Their coffee bean lipstick was everything and I loved rocking the deep burgundy nail polish. Much to the displeasure of my parents, as well!
You just took me on a trip down memory lane , I remember all of those products and I truly loved max factor!!! Max factor had a small tube of eyeshadow base but I used it also as concealer. That was the very best makeup purchase I ever made in my life and have been looking for something that is equal to that product for years and I don’t think it’s out there
This was fun! Reminds me of your historically accurate series. I laughed out loud at the nipple dye. Who would have thought? I'm pulling out my brownish lipsticks and trying them to punch up my neutral looks. Thanks Zabrena!
I miss my max factor mascara and pan stick foundation ! Still haven’t found a replacement! Still use my Cody’s air spun powder! My grandmother used it for her foundation/powder in South Louisiana! Hot and humid weather ! And no skin cancer ! I loved Clinique’s black honey pot ! Lols!
The nostalgia i felt when you pulled out the Chanel polish 🥰 i used to have the shade Copper Magnet that my cousin gave me when he worked in Bloomingdales in Manhattan. I would bring that bad boy with me to the nail salon and all the women wanted to "borrow" it. Nuh-uh, I was not letting that bottle out of my sight!
Going back to the 70s, does anyone remember and miss: Bonne Bell Blushing Gel and Bronzing Gel; Revlon Cheek Glissers and their Bright & Shining Morning Face Gloss; Yardley Pot o'Gloss and Shine Stopper Products? I still dream about these!
I loved 2000 calorie mascara. It was the only mascara I used. There was an eye quad with neutral/cool browns. It was amazing. I bought as many as I could when I heard they were being taken out of my Walmart store. Still haven’t found a replacement.
My sister worked at Macys in the 90s with Ultima II. She would bring samples to me, and I remembered Walmart use to sell Max Factor in the late 90s. Such memories, that was the Era of makeup upgrading for drugstore brands.
I'm in my 30s and probably one of many new subscribers of yours. I loved using Revlon and Covergirl makeup in the 90s, although I really didn't get into makeup until the later part of that decade lol. I loved hearing the history of makeup products and the lipsticks you mentioned. Sending you peace and positive vibes.
I was in college in the 90s and 90s brown lipstick is what started my love for makeup. Revlon’s Toast of New York lipstick, Revlon Colorstay lipstick, and the cosmetics line Ultima II (oh how I LOVED Ultima II) is what screams 90s to me.
I think you just unearthed my love for green nail polish. I forgot Urban Decay had nail polish. I loved them so much. I must have unknowingly brought this with me from my bar hoping post college days.
I’m 51 and the 90’s was the grunge era so these dark browns and vampy colours were so popular with my age group! Good times!
I can’t think of the 90’s without mentioning Kevyn Aucoin and his The Naked Collection from Ultima II!
Wow! I didn’t know he had a collection with Ultima II. I used to love that line. Used to buy it from JC Penney. Thank you for that tidbit of info 😊

Jane pineapple lipstick was my FAVE ~ I still miss it!

Major takeaway from this history facts: kitchen is THE place to make makeup so I'm killing it now in my quest to create makeup product 😂
LOL! Apparently! Get cooking, girlfriend!
The book Make it up is supposed to be good for recipes for makeup. I saw Erin Parsons recommend and make some on her channel.

I actually remember the great Kevin Aucoin creating that line and making over women on some daytime show I can't remember. The woman hosting was in 80s mode with bold color and she was freaking out. So funny 😀
Love your historical videos. My favorite lipstick was Revlons "toast of New York" it is still available, a gorgeous brown. 😊
I absolutely loved that eyeshadow from urban decay. All I would use was urban decay, Mac and club Monaco single shadows.
An idea! MAKEUP BRAND STORIES from start to now! You telling the story while applying products from the brand.. that’s would be amazing!!
I really enjoyed the stories you were including in the video and would love to hear the full stories for each brand.
Ouuuu I like this idea! Thank you!
I've worn Revlon's rum raisin since the 90s and I still wear it a lot to this day. I always get compliments when I wear it. I really miss that amazing 2000 calorie mascara from Max Factor. It's hard to find one as good these days.
Well, you got my hubby's attention with the Benetint history lmao.
LOL!!! Sounds about right!
Jerk!
Omg I love these types of historical videos as only Zabrena can do! I still LOVE and use all Urban Decay products! Coffee Bean lipstick was my jam in the 90s!!! ❤️
WHOOOOOO! :)
That ending: I almost spat my drink out laughing thinking to myself, "she's gonna blooper this I just know it!"
I miss your historically accurate series so much, Z.
2000 Calorie mascara was my favorite and only mascara for years. Miss it so much!!
That was the very best makeup purchase I ever made in my life and have been looking for something that is equal to that product for years and I don’t think it’s out there
Always love your history videos! Keep them coming.
Max factor! I had my very first deep purple eyeshadow from them!
Yes please more makeup history. I love this. I recently rewatched some of your older videos of the decades. I can still smell Noxema in my head 😂
This was fun! Reminds me of your historically accurate series. I laughed out loud at the nipple dye. Who would have thought? I'm pulling out my brownish lipsticks and trying them to punch up my neutral looks. Thanks Zabrena!
I remember using Cody face makeup in the 70s.
Loved this video! I didn’t know the background stories except for Benefit 😂
Haha! Oh you're a history buff like me! :)
@@Zabrena Hee Hee, I think I actually learned it from you! 😂
Omg I started with Midnight Cowboy and Cherry from UD.
Black Honey by Clinique was originally sold in little plastic pots.
yes, Zabrena mentioned that in the video. did you not watch it??
@@cathycasuccio-ec4sw
Yes I watched it.
I replied as soon as I saw the tube from Clinique.
I guess I should delete my comment? Let me know.
That’s what she stated.
Oh I somehow missed that part of the video! Thank you. That sounds so cute to me :) Not many things come in pots now!
I remember Rum Raisin! I love Benetint but didn't know it's history.
Love the video! I still use Noxzema. 😂
I remember that Max Factor mascara! So thick! This took me back to visiting the Ultima II counter at Robinson's and May Co.
My sister worked at Macys in the 90s with Ultima II. She would bring samples to me, and I remembered Walmart use to sell Max Factor in the late 90s. Such memories, that was the Era of makeup upgrading for drugstore brands.
This was wonderful, Zabrena! I came of age in the 70s and I wish wish wish I could get my hands on some of the makeup from that time.
This was very fun & I remember those colors! Sigh... memories. Thanks for the fun historic tidbits too. I never noticed that poppyseed. 😂
Awesome video Zabrena.
LOVE UR HAIR/MAKEUP! LOOKS MOST FABULOUS! HUGS, RILEY
I think you just unearthed my love for green nail polish. I forgot Urban Decay had nail polish. I loved them so much. I must have unknowingly brought this with me from my bar hoping post college days.
