Even though I'm not a rider, I like to watch these videos as it helps me understand how people on motorcycle ride so I can make them feel safe when im around and to not be a hazard for them. Also learn more of situation awareness for when I drive my mustang
Hey DanDan, saw a few comments on your previous videos about the way you talk, if you are too commanding / pressuring / whatever. A lot of them were over the top but I wanted to quickly voice something. It's refreshing to see that you'v become less "do this do that" but you still are able to deliver your sense of care and wanting her to be safe, you're allowing her to learn for herself some more. It shows you are considerate and mature, and it's cool you found the balance. Good on you, it made me enjoy the video more. On a normal note, you've become one of my favourites to watch because you have a nice enthusiasm and charisma to you in the way you choose to talk. Keep it up.
New rider watching this two years later wishing I had a personal trainer to ride with me. So, instead, I will talk out loud to myself through my rides, including identifying cars, intersections, and hazards, etc.
Dan, a couple of weeks ago I passed with flying colors of the BRC course. Then I’ve been watching your safety videos and those of Nikki learning as well. Afterwards, been practicing on a school’s parking lot and referred to what I’ve learned and a few hours ago, I went on my first 5 mile ride! Thank you for creating these videos! Thank you!
I really commend Dan Dan for the way you are handling teaching Nikki taking one level of experience at a time... I am a second time rider after 47 years of not having a bike... took the basic rider's training course to get my license, however, I am a lone rider... I have no partner so getting out on the road I have had to learn as I go... These video vlogs are such a great help in sharpening my awareness I can't say enough for how much good you are doing for the riding community... you are a blessing and Nikki is so awesome how she is coming along... Thanks for being a blessing and sharing... Appreciate what you do...
@@Shastar271828 Worst states for traffic in my experience: NJ where I currently reside. I don't even ride here ☹ Connecticut. Pennsylvania, especially near the Delaware and Philadelphia.
It's very cool as a new rider myself to see Nikki's progression, and your coaching of her. I've been practicing on my Scout 60 for the past three weeks in the local parking lots, and have my first MSF session tonight. Looking forward to putting those lessons, and yours as well, into practice.
What a great video, as a 46y old fellow firefighter looking to get a bike and ride again after 20+ years, watching your videos is like taking a lesson. Good job my man (and your better half) keep it up.
In the UK, we have the '2 second rule', where you should be able to see a driver go past something, count to 2 and you shouldn't pass the same thing before your 2 count. This is for decent braking distance. 4 for rain, 10 for snow/ice/fog. etc.
In Belgium there was a campaign about the distance rule recently. You should be able to sing "Last night a DJ saved my live" in dry condition (2 sec) and "Last night a DJ saved my life from a broken heart" in wet conditions (3 sec) and you shouldn't have passed the reference point before the end of your singing.
Germany has a similar rule however tailgating is very common. So I try to keep at least 2 seconds to the car in front of me and about 4 seconds to the car in front of that. Usually I end up with about 3 or more seconds to the vehicle in front of me.
Watch this video I noticed there was no buffering much by Nikki. I am studying for my learners licence and my book says keep a buffer and ride single file. Nikki should be riding on your side or in the middle not close to the double lines and oncoming cars. Your rules in the states are probably different to Australia. Got to say you've given some great advice about keeping well back from the car in front at the lights in case they wanted to reverse. I didn't consider that and it wasn't mentioned in my book. Love your videos.
Thank you for the videos! I am getting my rebel this week and have learned a lot just by watching your videos. When you guys were talking about the butterfly and Nikki goes "We're pretty" I almost spit my coffee out I laughed so hard. I do appreciate you guys and the time you take to make these videos!!
This is the second video of a ride with both of you and it really helps to see a beginner rider. To know I will be doing the same things and learning from watching another helps me understand it. Thanks to both of you for doing this.
i have a rebel 500. there is a known issue of it not shifting. if you let out the clutch then grab the clutch again, you will find the gear will shift again. no idea why but give that a try next time
The reason she was having problems with the clutch and couldn't shift down is because she wasn't downshifting fully, motorcycles need to be moving in order to shift multiple gears. for example, if you're in 3rd and then pull the clutch and breaks instead of downshifting once you come to a stop you won't be able to get to 1st the bike will go to neutral then if you release the clutch and pull it you can shift to 1st. Like @DanDanTheFireman said not an issue, however, its better rider safety and for the bike to downshift. I only know this because I'm a new rider myself... to the street that is. Traded for an EN500 09 Love your videos @DanDanTheFireman huge inspiration to us new riders... please keep it up!!
Great video, Dan. Just passed my BRC and shopping for a bike. Looking forward to my first ride on the road with a combination of excitement and fear. This is a great video to show a new rider what can't be taught at the BRC.
Sometimes bikes will have a hard time downshifting back into first gear if you are doing it once you're at a full stop. Either try rolling the bike forward as you are attempting to downshift (if you're in a higher gear while stopped), or downshift before coming to a full stop. This might've been the issue Nikki was having.
I started riding this year on a Rebel 500. I find the best way to get into first when it does that "catch" is to apply a little pressure down on the shifter and gently ease out the clutch. As you tickle the beginning of the friction zone the gear reliably pops down to first for me. Careful not to let it out too quick, of course. Rolling the bike a little does the same job, but is a little slower from a standstill, I find.
I like that you give instructions and point out everything ,they are all important, when learning, keep up the good work and even when she gets to a good level,we all could use some coaching if necessary.
Hi Dan 👋 I'm a big fan of your videos, and just wanted to let you know that watching them has helped me a lot. I've been riding for the past year on a 2009 Suzuki Burgman executive 650. I got my endorsement on it. But I have recently wanted to buy a traditional motorcycle, so I just took and passed my MSF basic rider course the other day! I definitely used some of the techniques I watched on your channel. So now I'm buying a new motorcycle and starting a lifelong journey of enjoyment and daily learning. Thanks Dan, we all appreciate your help and support! 👍💯😎
See the comments already, Classic! All the critic's will begin surfacing now like a lake of lost bobber's released from the debris below, and all at once. Nikki is doing great. No sense in throwing her into rush hour traffic like your Dad taught you to swim at the pond. Throw them in and see if they sink or not. You have a lot of good advice. I hope that people will get out of their own way long enough to learn something to help themselves some sunny day. Great job highlighting the hazards.

I really appreciate these videos. I am new to riding and I am learning a lot of useful information that I didn't get in my skills class. I think the constant communication you are providing for her is great, and it is going to make her a safer and better rider for not only her, but those sharing the road with her. You make great and helpful videos. I’m buying a T100 soon and haven’t ridden a bike for forty years. This is a great retraining experience, so thanks heaps to you both. Just like the cautious way you approach riding….you’re so sensible!!!
If the back wheel isn't turning it can sometimes be hard to get the bike all the way down into first gear. So it's usually a good idea get all the downshifting done right before you come to a complete stop. Great video btw.
You guys are doing great both teacher and student! Setting a fantastic example for new riders and especially for couples! Keep up the good work folks! Awesome job keeping your girl safe out there!🇨🇦🇺🇸
Very good teaching dan. Well done. I enjoyed you coaching her while riding. I watched the whole vlog. And took in a lot of what you said. Thumbs up !!! No videos of bikes crashing. Very well done

great videos ! Been driving two weeks today and these videos have been helping a lot. we have IBT (initial biker training) where I'm from in order to get your licence but you have to pass before you can legally practise anywhere outside of a lesson in order to progress so these vids are a great reminder and help continue the learning plus I take in what is being said more when I can watch what you mean in real time without being focused on driving myself. thanks for posting hope you keep it up and well done to Nikki.
I wish someone would train me like this! the MSF course literally had me riding the first day and tried to get me on the road. I did not know how to brake, use the clutch or where to put my feet. Im 5'3 and was on a giant cruiser, I could barely touch the ground. i had to lean the motorcycle a bit to reach with the tip of my toe.

Great vlog, it has helped me with my new found passion of riding. I wish I would have learned earlier in life, but everyone always had me scared to do so.
Dude you are a really good teacher. Very patient and understanding. I'm wanting to get a bike of my own and learn how to ride. If I do my brother-in-law will teach me but I don't know if he'll be as good as you are.
Hey Nikki I got to tell you you have such a great attitude awesome to see and Dan you're a great calm teacher. Only thing I would comment on is for Nikki to apply a little back brake for the final few feet when stopping and reduce front brake or none at all (so front suspension doesn't dip which make bike hard to control) and when stopped keep pressure on back brake and balance bike with left foot so you won't roll forward or backwards then when taking off again use clutch friction zone then slowly let go of back brake. Love watch your videos I'm always feel like I'm riding with you's lol..
also with trucks coming behind you remember their mirrors aren't always the ones that came with them, so riding the line in position one could lead to a head smack. I actually know of a rider that had that happen to them and as always Nikki you're doing good riding, keep it up
i'm 65 and always wanted a motorcycle, but didn't know where start, i just watching your vidoes and i think i can do, Nikki has came along way since the first video of her, your so patient with her, just don't have a bike to learn on
I dont know how this is in the US...but here in germany we have a traffic rule that says you have to use the right lane as much as possible. If there are 2 or more lanes, you have to pass another vehicle at least every 20 seconds and if you dont, move over to the right lane. So the middle lane is for those who want to pass those in the right lane and the left lane is for those who want to go even faster than those who are in the middle lane. But all of them have to switch to the right as soon as there is no one left to overtake. Also its forbidden to pass someone from the right.
I start taking my classes today to start riding. I know with seat time I'll get more confident but I think riding in traffic for the first time will get me a little nervous.
I've allways wanted to ride a bike but allways been nervous because of the good old "they're death traps" comment from other people and I get it but these videos are so helpful and reassuring.
I dont care if the roads was almost empty, its still out on the road and I've been there done that and I was sooooo nervous!!!! GJ thoo!! :D Have to add that the cars around me was the thing who made me nervous even if I wasn't a pro on MC, you never know what the cars (driver) will and can do without looking for Bikes!
She will have to rev up the engine to downshift into first if she is going faster than that gear will allow her to go and she will skid the tire if she lets out the clutch too fast going to fast. Sometimes it doesn't even want to go due to the clutches trying to come up to speed of the bike. So where were your gloves?
Safety courses always instruct us to head for the rear of any car that is turning in front of you, you are much likelier to not hit it by going behind the car instead of swerving left into its path, as they have already committed to hitting the gas and going for the turn. So swerve to the right and go behind them, and aim for wear they already have been, instead of heading for where they are going to drive through the turn. If I am in doubt of the driver on the side street and coming into an intersection I turn my lights to bright to get their attention so they are more likely to see me coming at them.
First time I rode in traffic is right after I bought my first bike. Dude cut me off then hopped the curb in front of me. Scared me into really paying attention to road strategy.
I have been riding in the city I live in, its crazy how people in cars just don't pay attention to bikes ! So much traffic in my area unless I go backroads then there is a little bit less lol
American roads are so different. I would never go that close to a lane, but this is me and everybody drives different 🤷♂️. Great videos taht you do DAN i like them a lot👍.
DDFM ... love your instructional videos and how you explain what you do and your advice to Nikki. Like her, I recently purchased my own Honda Rebel 500 and am enjoying the roadways as a new rider. One request for yet one more instructional video would be a downhill negative camber turn from a stop or very slow speed? We have these in several areas in the Monterey Peninsula areas of California and they are the devil to negotiate. Riding these corners is something they didn't mention in the MTC Basic course and I haven't found information on any of the websites nor in publications. Thanks in advance and keep the video's coming.
And my husband rides behind me like you've done with Nikki. Using the two-way Cardo systems, we can communicate with each other and he offers tips and encouragement telling me what I can improve on and am doing correctly. Each ride gets better and better with my confidence and abilities. Thanks to you both for this ...
1st gear ? It's easiest to go down to 1st while still moving at like 2 mph right before you stop and any bike will always down shift. Even Hondas will be glitchy if ur not moving and go for 1st. There is nothing wrong usually and that is just part of a manual transmission. You get the same thing in cars sometimes. Push back at stop lights with right foot and shift to 1st it always works.
Man, I wish you could teach me! My fiancée might not be so tetchy about me riding if I could prove to her that I’m being taught by someone with such good anticipation skills!
Isn't it risky to drive along the limits of the left lane? You don't have enough space to react if a car coming from the opposite direction loses control and heads into you.
Check out a dual vlog while she is on the FTR1200 with me! ruclips.net/video/LYlc81jgqew/видео.html

Your videos are so helpful for us new riders. Thank you
I like the daughter say ‘thank you’ to her father. And I like the father to be her great teacher.
I did my first road ride yesterday felt like even little cars was scary
Please come and ride in Istanbul 🤦♂️ its nothing like this and you’re kinda lucky✨
Ömercanın kıvırcıkları Cs nin şeyleri • More like Traffic hell ;)
She will have to rev up the engine to downshift into first if she is going faster than that gear will allow her to go and she will skid the tire if she lets out the clutch too fast going to fast. Sometimes it doesn't even want to go due to the clutches trying to come up to speed of the bike. So where were your gloves?
You are a very good instructor!
I really wish I had a buddy to ride with. There needs to be personal trainers for new riders.
First time I rode in traffic is right after I bought my first bike. Dude cut me off then hopped the curb in front of me. Scared me into really paying attention to road strategy.
Thanks for video. Everyone seems not to have noticed the love !
Normal traffic? Lol
That's 2am in Atlanta.
So empty.
I have been riding in the city I live in, its crazy how people in cars just don't pay attention to bikes ! So much traffic in my area unless I go backroads then there is a little bit less lol
Learning a lot from these videos ! Thanks for uploading
American roads are so different. I would never go that close to a lane, but this is me and everybody drives different 🤷♂️. Great videos taht you do DAN i like them a lot👍.
How much you paid before for fake traffic lol. Thank you for the video
Dan, what a great instructional video. Thanks for sharing with us
She did an awesome job.
Thanks for ur info man learning even more before classing in couple days
DDFM ... love your instructional videos and how you explain what you do and your advice to Nikki.
The Honda is a beautiful bike.
I want to video vlog with nikki. One beginner rider to another.🤔👍🏽
Man, I wish you could teach me! My fiancée might not be so tetchy about me riding if I could prove to her that I’m being taught by someone with such good anticipation skills!
Love it! You guys rock! Keep it up!
Do you guys not clear the road if you spot dangerous objects in it to prevent accidents? is there someone paid to ?
Jonatc87 You can if you want to. If you can pullover safely and so on. Usually city workers are called in to do that. Might vary per city.
I find the UK biker sideways nod so much more convenient than a wave - font need to sacrifice a hand
I have the same motorcycle Honda Rebel and it mine too gets stuck at the first gear. Wonder if all Honda Rebels do?
I have one question why don't they use horns when they are approaching an intersection?
Did you add headlight modulators to your bikes? I wonder as you tell her to present herself to people that might pull out
Isn't it risky to drive along the limits of the left lane? You don't have enough space to react if a car coming from the opposite direction loses control and heads into you.
If you're gonna dislike this kind of video, please, say why...
Your doing an awesome job dandan 👍🏻 new subscriber 🇬🇧🇬🇧
thanks! learned a lot, keep it going
Go Nikki, go!
Was up DAN dan starting msf today here in Savannah Ga. praying for a good out come lol
Praying too brah!
Awesome video! What’s Nikkis helmet?
5:22 lowkey thought that bin-bag was a turtle. dunno why. probably the way it's blowing in the wind makes it look like a turtle moving forward
lol did y'all remove some of the stickers on her helmet?
Excellent
