control key on the left there is like the main selling point. when you’re programming hitting ctrl+letter combos all day it means that your hand isn’t stretching in that strange posture constantly. do that 5000x a day and its worth the $$ :)
i'm actually so surprised that these keybaords are actually seeing the light of day on youtube. for the longest time there weren't any even relatively big youtubers talking about topre at all. after going through several different HHKB's I settled for a non type-s BT, and now that the hybrid is out it's time for me to upgrade to the hybrid. I always get this disconnection issue on bluetooth that breaks the experience for me while gaming with this keyboard, so i'm glad the hybrid keyboard addresses that because i'll just be using it in wired mode.
So true. this keyboard came out so long ago and I've used HHKB Pro and Pro2 for almost 15 years and back then there was no retailer that sold these keyboards. Now big youtubers are starting to review which makes me happy :)
Bro your voice is soo soothing I love it. This is the first video of yours that I've watched and I really hope you keep up the great quality in your future ones
I just got my HHK Professional Hybrid Type-S. The Topre keys are absolutely fantastic. The minimalist design of this keyboard is surprisingly functional and definitely makes for more effortless coding! I read several reviews on this keyboard, and most complain about the price - value for the money. It was worth the investment. Keeping my hands over the keyboard where they belong is a game changer.
I picked up a HHKB pro 2 second hand for a good price. Loved it stock, but went ahead and modified it with silencing rings and lubricated the switches and stabilisers with Krytox 205g0. Highly recommend taking the time to lube it! Sounds and feels amazing!!
Papa Mario Lmfao please. Topre is best money for best typing experience out of the box. People spend $300-$1000 on a custom mechanical keyboard case without switches or $300 key caps and need to spend hours lubing each one just to be on par with a Topre keyboard.
The best way to describe Topre switches is it's a good feeling of oneness with cup rubber. Memes aside, I have two Realforces R2 TKLs. For me, the main reason why I love these boards so much are the sounds they make when I type. absolute T H O C C
I have been playing with a HHKB PRO 2 for a year now, love the topre switches. You can totally play at a high lvl with a keyboard like this, I'm lvl 10 on faceit with 2k5 elo (csgo).
I have a niz EC keyboard. I love this thing. It has a pretty standard layout but has such a great feel to the switches. It's also pretty easy to get rubber dome sheets at different weights if you prefer something heavier. I'd like to eventually get an actual topre board but for now, this is giving me everything I need. Plus it has mx compatible stems so I can use my keycap sets. Plus I got it for $80 used which is great.
Funnily enough, I always shifted my Shift Key up to caps & Ctrl up to Shift because of my small hands and it's always a strain to deal with, I might actually pick this up. Except I love my Page Up/Down, Home/End & Arrows too much while typing out my D&D GM Notes and essays/scripts. The Keyboard Deities have pained me once more.
The 2nd layer arrow keys, pg up ,pg down, home, and end keys are quite close to the fn key (beside right shift key) and its still usable. I can breeze through excel spreadsheets like im using a TKL
Listen to me. I intentionally ignored everyone's Topre boards on channels until I had one. I'm tactile only gang but shit I really like them now. Love this video.
I don't have an HHKB layout but moving Control to capslock on all my boards has incredibly helpful. I can't go back, I would rather have three Ctrl keys
I recently bought a Topre Realforce 105UB 45g keyboard. And I have to say, that I am extremely satisfied with this keyboard. I've had several keyboards before. These included MX-Switches like MX-Blues, MX-Browns, and I tried even MX-Clear, but this keyboard is like heaven for your fingers. I can recommend a keyboard with Topre-Switches for everyone, who is a professional typist, or who types a lot. This keyboard is eventually not for gamers, because as I know many gamers prefer keyboards with RGB-Lighting and so, which Topre also manufactures. But for the most gamers, it will be too expensive. Everyone who wants an excellent build quality, and the best switches in the world is very welcome to buy this keyboard, because it's a really good one, as it is the HHKB, as it haves also Topre-Switches.
Im surprised that you guys (BST et al) have just tried Topre recently. Been using it for years. You need to mod that buddy. - lube the slider rails and change the domes to BKE. Either Lights or Ultralights, and you’re golden. :)
Definitely a unique experience that everyone needs to try. I'm not a huge fan of the lack of dedicated arrows but I still come back to this board at least for a day a week.
The "liking" curve for the key feel is an underappreciated thing. I went back and forth between HHKB and and a Cherry MX blues board for quite a while becoming a Topre person. (Also, and I will never get tired of saying this, the default Fn layer is crap. I would never use the board if I could not move the Fn key and remap the Fn layer.)
Bought my HHKB Pro 2 for €80 in January. They started off a little scratchy but after 2 weeks or so they became smooth as butter. I'm currently in the process of silencing it because I couldn't find a deal on a Type-S. I've already done sound and vibration dampening pads and Deskey Medium rings and lube are on their way atm. Love it. :)
i own some Topre keyboards, and while i really like my HHKB, i'd just prefer my Leopold FC980C with 1800 layout more, maybe i have to use number pad then :)
Not sure if you will be reading this comment, but there are some custom keycap sets for topre stems on aliexpress. So it looks like there are at least some options out there (quality questions aside)
The switches sound similar to silent switches like the Zilents or Cherry MX Silent variants. Not a bad sound, but not the best in my opinion. Interesting review, are you gonna review any Durgod keyboards by any chance?
Rechargeables are replaceable too. You can just buy a new one, possibly even longer lasting, and swap it in. AA's can corrode and ruin your entire board. While li-ion don't do that. But then you could make the argument that li-ion batteries are flammable, but that happens very rarely and only if you aren't carefully to not puncture the battery. Both li-ion and AA's have their pros and cons but in my opinion li-ion are better. Also, for rechargable batteries there's a different material to make them from that gives them a longer lifetime, more capacity and higher charging speeds.
I've heard that the Topre switches are only technically tactile but feel more like linears because they actuate towards the top or at least the resistance kicks in at the top so it feels smooth all the way down. I just got a Ducky One 2 SF in white, so I'm not in the immediate market for keyboards but, if I ever have a spare $300 I'd definitely want to at least try this and, if I don't like it, I'll just flip it on eBay.
i have one type s nd one normal...uou have to try the normal one. it's also better. more tactile, a little more light in key press and you take the " toc" sound and also have the release pitch sound. for me it's aamazing if you don't have the necessity of silent one....
Thank you for the review. I've got a HHKB Pro 2, would the Pro Hybrid be a compelling update? Other than USB-c and Bluetooth, it doesn't seem to really offer anything new. I'm using this keyboard on macOS, BTW.
Time to get the hhkb layout for everything. The other best thing about the layout is the split backspace!! The hhkb is the reason why I never buy above a 65% anymore. Also really love the fn layer and pretty much replicate it on every other keyboard I get.
jobbyt Everydayguy yeah I live in America and even then we don’t have shops where we can try our switches. The only types you can find are the typical gaming keyboards at bestbuy
I'm sure the feel is great and the sound is pretty nice otb, but I feel like the price tag for what you're getting is hard to justify for me. Glad you like it maybe feeling them would change my mind in the future. 300 for a new set of switches is pretty steep to me.
And its made in Japan and not in China which is also another reason its so expensive but I have the HHKB Pro2 and the Realforce R2 TKL (Pfu limited edition) and they are both worth every penny. I dont have the Type S HHKB but I lubed it and it like a better silenced switch when the non silent is lubed. very quiet but amazing sound and feel.
Love topre but hate them for gaming. Having to bottom out and reset rather then feathering the actuation point for strafing isn't optimal for me. For typing though they are perfection
I've switched my control and caps lock keys in firmware, and i really love it for typing and controls, so for games i just set my crouch to "caps". The only annoying thing is that sometimes i type in game in caps accidently
Maybe it’s the sound signature of them, they don’t sound very smooth to me, but everyone says they’re really smooth. I still much prefer the sound of HP, Tangerine, Cream, or Alpaca (all lubed). Maybe I just gotta get a topre and give it some time.
Neko i also own BKE light domes on my Leopold FC660C ame thought they were much more tactile than HP and Zealios. Almost TOO tactile and honestly the amount was too much for me. Wish there was a dome that was between the subtle bump of stock domes and the BKE light.
@@andrezinho176 Maybe the ultra lights? I have yet to try them but maybe there a good middle ground personally I like the tactility of the lights but its too much for some stuff ie gaming
Does topre feel anything like brown or red, because that too mushy for me. I need some feel that a key is being clicked, not as much as blue or green but somewhere in between
I swear I've seen a video on you putting a specific foam in your custom keyboards but I can't find it, do you still put a sound dampener in your keyboards?
I dont know if the keyboard is as insane as it looks in the video or if BTs Blockbuster videos are just so insanely well made that i would even buy an aliexpress keyboard for 200$

u could just buy fc660c. The thing I wish that leopold, realforce and hhkb would make more pbt colored keycaps. The feel is like combining rubber dome with spring, which it is XD it has that after sound
ive wanted a hhkb professional for a while, may cop with trump money. My current two keyboards are a Vortex Race 3 with Blues for work and Ducky Mecha Mini with browns for gaming.
For the UNIX Programmer, specifically. Cute devicez but can't say it is the best out of box Topre/EC keebs these days. There are a few on the market, currently by the likes of Leopold, the CM NovaTouch TKL, Nix Plum and Realforce with a couple as well. Really, really digging the brand, NiZ's line up. The competition is real in build quality, $$$ and pretentious, elitism wanes out there.
I love my HHKB Pro 2 Type - S. I swapped it to 55g and lubed it and it is heaven on earth my man. Love your keyboard vids :)
control key on the left there is like the main selling point. when you’re programming hitting ctrl+letter combos all day it means that your hand isn’t stretching in that strange posture constantly. do that 5000x a day and its worth the $$ :)
The beginning of the video dude...I thought I was watching a keyboard review, not a better cinematic than in most games/movies these days :O

When people say topre is king, they're right
Topre is dopre
The king is naked.
I refuse to believe people who own Topre arent trying to cope for the money they spent for it
Topre, Holy Panda, Blue Alps, Tealios

Been using my Leopold FC980C for over 3 years now. Leopold is another great Topre type brand
Nathan Mastrangelo many would say better.
Finally you have discovered how incredible hhkb is
Using HHKB Pro 2 Type-S for more than 5 years and the only complain is when it will be broken so that I can buy the BT version. OTZ
The "liking" curve for the key feel is an underappreciated thing. I went back and forth between HHKB and and a Cherry MX blues board for quite a while becoming a Topre person. What lens are you using? Focal length and aperture?
i own some Topre keyboards, and while i really like my HHKB, i'd just prefer my Leopold FC980C with 1800 layout more, maybe i have to use number pad then :)
Leopolds are incredible
control on capslock is 1000000% better than in the bottom left. so much easier to do shortcuts and much less strain on wrist when gaming
I would definitely say the main thing people would complain about with getting use to this kind of layout is the split backspace.
Not sure if you will be reading this comment, but there are some custom keycap sets for topre stems on aliexpress. So it looks like there are at least some options out there (quality questions aside)

I would like to see a review of the Durgod TKL offerings on your channel.

whats the stab situation? that spacebar sounded nice, no rattle.
They sound like a louder lubed Zilent! Nice video Brandon!
Kevin Zyrkowski you don’t really get the thock with zilents. My 2 main boards are an fc660c and a dz65 with 65g zilents (lubed).
Yo what desk is that? Looks clean.
The Leopold FC660C shits on this easily
NOt sure why that price i so high though?!? PS is that switch sort of same as those awful mac rubber cap switches? Basically an aircap glues on?
Not at all the same.
I've heard that the Topre switches are only technically tactile but feel more like linears because they actuate towards the top or at least the resistance kicks in at the top so it feels smooth all the way down. How do you feel about alpherior keys and their keycaps plus new mousepad for gaming?
Man I would love this keyboard
If you want a better quality. better feeling version of this board with arrow keys check out the Leopold FC660C. IMO it's much better than the HHKB.

Hello, I want to build a keyboard myself, but I will do that for the first time. What are your tips for me?
are these pleasant to game on or difficult?
Love topre but hate them for gaming. Having to bottom out and reset rather then feathering the actuation point for strafing isn't optimal for me.
For typing though they are perfection
Why would you buy this keyboard when you can buy one with VIA software, or any other keyboard config to change the control key, etc?
Lack of arrow keys loses this board for me - not everyone uses vim lol great review though Brandon!
I've switched my control and caps lock keys in firmware, and i really love it for typing and controls, so for games i just set my crouch to "caps". The only annoying thing is that sometimes i type in game in caps accidently
I am pretty sure you can disable caps lock
Is BT using his A7S II for these shots or another camera/lens combo? I've always wondered but never seen it listed anywhere. Thanks!
I use a canon c200 and Eos R these days.
Brandon Taylor the correct choices! Lol especially with that R5 coming out
Maybe it’s the sound signature of them, they don’t sound very smooth to me, but everyone says they’re really smooth. I still much prefer the sound of HP, Tangerine, Cream, or Alpaca (all lubed). Maybe I just gotta get a topre and give it some time.
Bluetooth has a delay gamers tend to stay away from, one of the reasons to hardwire.
Is their really that much of a delay though? Like noticeable input lag?
The angle is what I don't like. Too sloped. I prefer flatter. That's why I'd say a Realforce is a better Topre board. A bit less steep.
You should try it with BKE domes in I've got BKE Light Domes in mine and there way more tactile than my holy pandas and zealios v2 switches
Neko i also own BKE light domes on my Leopold FC660C ame thought they were much more tactile than HP and Zealios. Almost TOO tactile and honestly the amount was too much for me. Wish there was a dome that was between the subtle bump of stock domes and the BKE light.

The new position por ctrl sounds nice tho
Does topre feel anything like brown or red, because that too mushy for me.

It's more like Brown to me lol.
Is the amp that you're using mentioned anywhere? It looks amazing!
5:50 this sounds like a membrane keyboard
because they're rubber domes
Are these better than alpaca's? Lol looking for that holy grail
i like how i just know the keyboard feels. i dont really know on other switches but topre doe
I swear I've seen a video on you putting a specific foam in your custom keyboards but I can't find it, do you still put a sound dampener in your keyboards?
Does it start to lag when the battery is about to run out???
I dont know if the keyboard is as insane as it looks in the video or if BTs Blockbuster videos are just so insanely well made that i would even buy an aliexpress keyboard for 200$
Wish more keyboards did this with the caps lock, tired of having to use Control as a crouch or walk function in CSGO.
Daniel Early you could do it yourself with sharp keys. I do it like that because every now and then I have to use my laptop keyboard and it slows me down when I don’t have CTRL on the caps lock key.
I'm kinda sad that nobody told him about the Leopold fc660c, better and cheaper Topre experience imo. The only thing that this has over it is the wireless.
dude the only sane layout is one that has the ctrl key where the caps lock normally is
If anyone wants to know what Topre feels like, it feels like a glorified rubber dome switch. Smoother, longer travel distance, rubber dome switch.
Topre makes one wonder what the hype with mechanical switches even is.
Should add hhkb ble PCB to hhkb pro 2 to make it Bluetooth. Then add bke domes and lube all the sliders with tribosys 3203 or 3204 and use krytox 205 grade 0 to further lube stabilizers
Should try Leopold’s Topre. Heard from quite a few that they all prefer it over the HHKB. Not wireless though.
I heard that Leopold's board have pinging issues because of the metal plate.
Can this be remapped to use different layouts? (Workman, Dvorak, etc)
BT those switches sound like membrane switches lmaooooo
For gaming id def rather have control up top. You can get after market topre caps fyi.
Three ... Hundred.. Dollars - FUCK THAT! That's a Ryzen 5 5600X lol.
I'm not sure if topre is worth the hype or the price but I do enjoy it a lot. Once I got used to the HHKB layout I can't go back
u could just buy fc660c. The thing I wish that leopold, realforce and hhkb would make more pbt colored keycaps. The feel is like combining rubber dome with spring, which it is XD it has that after sound
I actually never map anything to ctrl in games, I find it too uncomfortable to reach while using the wasd keys. I've always used caps lock for crouch.
I am expecting my JP edition to arrive in the mail tomorrow! It has arrow keys too!
