Emergency roof tarp that actually made things worse!

- Whoever did this emergency tarp job actually made things quite a bit worse! Then the vet pipes were simply leaking around the rubber seal not anything to do with the roof deck itself. When they put the tarp over the pipes like that they are actually restricting the air flow causing some of the appliances to go out and fail. All it needed was a Oatey 14136 Rain Collar 1.5"-3" No-Calk Roof Flashing

The water heater is probably a power vent unit - the intake isn’t through the pipe, just the exhaust. The limited exhaust might be what leads to the water heater having a malfunction, but that’s hard to say. Your getting the air flowing again will either fix the problem or the problem is unrelated, so you did the best you could do for that.

I have a problem with my roof. It was reroofed a few years ago, and it resulted in a leak around the dormer window, and a horrible smell in the attic bedroom every time it rains. There was also a hefty wind blowing through the small loft space (accessible via a hatch in the attic bedroom ceiling).
I recently had some roofing contractors out to do a number of things, including searchingly for the leak and repairing it. As it turned out, there were three holes that were found, two at the edges of the window:s lead and the other was where the roof felt beneath the tiles had a big gap from not being fitted properly. They fixed everything they found.
It rained not long after the repairs were done, and the smell, which I'm led to believe is black mold, returned, as it always happened before. We've since had a windy rainstorm. The wind was blowing through the loft space again, although nowhere near as bad as before they fixed the holes. I was told this might be ok on account of breathable felt. But the smell was there with a vengeance again. I'm at a loss as to what to do about it :(

Can I nail down the tarp with Tyvek house wrap capped nails maybe with some roofing cement on bottom and top?
The HVAC will behave exactly as you described - it will try to start up, determine that the intake air is restricted, and then shut off as a safety measure.
Lowe's in the western PA area carry the Oatey rain collars in two sizes, if that helps anyone.

No hail damage, thats wear and tear. Lomanco slant back 750 vents are soft metal, they will ding and leave dents easy, I didnt even see any dents in them, just faded. So no collateral damage means no hail damage to roof. Most of that damage was done during install because of pitch and over the seasonal periods those loose granule areas created during install eventually wash away. Hence what you see all over that roof. Sometimes these areas of concern with the loss of granules is prone to valleys, around chimney flashing and high traffic areas. NOW let me rant on the pipe boot situation. The other contractor tarped the boots and covered them up? That is a ton of work for nothing??!! Customers do this all the time, they just dont do research and simple due diligent. Brian good opportunity to take these small repairs and make a good repair check. Leads boots are $30-40 those shitty ass plastic base and rubber seal are $5 for a reason, those reseals wont last but a few years and start to crack again. Show them the difference to their face. I make my customers hold the lead boots and I show them I form them and I let them touch the water repellent snythetic underlayment and they ALWAYS PAY. (those difference in quality is a no brainer). BUT if you got squirrels that can be a new problem, hahha. That repair 1sq of shingles, 3 lead boots (painted to match, w/roof accessory paint) w/labor and O&P, $600 for that repair. That customer is lucky they found you! lets go live friday. If you have gone live, im not getting notifications anymore.

Okay but if it's 2 AM on a weeknight and you have no money for a professional roofer, seems like a good solution until the rain passes and you can climb up there with some caulk during the weekend.

I built a house about 15 years ago and now I am working on another big project. I've noticed a big drop off in the availability of quality contractors. I know I'm a one off project so maybe I can't get the good people but it is really frustrating.
That's just the opposite of this area. Where are you watching from?
@@GrandRoofingInc I'm from NC. Note I said "quality" contractors. I've had a few look at my jobs but I didn't get a good feeling it was going to go well. So I end up doing a lot of stuff myself. Just takes longer, but it does get done right.
@@semosancus5506 okay yes around here a lot of the good quality contractors are busy Building Homes and stuff. The local roofing markets have been hit hard with a lot of storm restoration companies, you know paper pushers. There have been no significant storms, causing them to door knock every neighborhood within a couple hour radius of here. The roofing side of things are slow in our area. You mix that now with people's finances getting tight and it's gotten pretty slow.
@@GrandRoofingInc Yeah we could be about to enter lean times! buckle up. I guess you will be fighting bad roof jobs even more when the paper pushers get more agressive. We do love your videos though, please keep making them. I did a roof repair on my chicken coop a couple of months ago and I admit I had to run out and see about my nail placement 😀. I did ok, but I didn't seal down the old shingles I had to flat bar apart. Fortunately the coop is kind of up in the woods and we don't see much wind around here.
@@semosancus5506 if your east coast nc I know a few excellent old school gen ctrs in places like Wilmington. They still around just arent as easy to get a hold of unlike the ones going door to door
