- We just got a new bit of information about Battlefront III, and it's pretty dang heartbreaking. We'll cover that and more on today's video.

It was that close to being finished and then cancelled? I feel awful for the devs who worked this much on it and also the fact it was so close is just so saddening to see.

Another dev said it wasn't tho. That they picked the best footage of the buggy mess they had for that alpha leaked trailer, and the multiplayer couldn't handle the 64 players they promised. There's a wiki page of free radical design with the whole story of the development and cancellation.
Star wars 1313, kotor 3, and other….cancelled in various states. Always a tragedy
Man this is gut wrenching… I work in the industry, not as a dev, and I would be heart broken if any of my titles were canned that late in development.

@@macwelch8599 no problem. Besides, the Chiss live in a civilization outside the known galaxy in the unknown regions. Thrawn was a very rare exception. Most Chiss would never be seen in the known galaxy, their force-wielders were called “Skywalkers” (named after Anakin who visited the unknown regions during the Clone Wars and helped the Chiss Ascendancy) and they used their powers for navigating hyperspace because the Jedi Order didn’t really exist out there.

@@patrickmaybe2197 There was actually a Chiss Jedi padawan in the Clone Wars, Nuru Kungurama, who appears in the Clone Wars Secret Missions series of books.
Sadly it's a common occurence. I'm a game design student, so not even yet in the industry, and even here, we feel it. Our teachers, who are veterans of the vudeo game industry constantly mention abandonned projects that were incredible, but we feel it even in our firmation project.
We have to make little games, both tabletop and video games, twice a year. And many time, a nearly complete project is shattered by the jury to be replaced by another idea.
It's deliberate, the jury wants us to be prepared for when this will happens as game designers, both to be able to land on our feet and to rpepare for the emotional backlash of having to abandon a project on which you spent countless nights.
And that's not mentioning the completed projects that, due to the school regulations on formation projects, will never be released on steam, regardless of their quality.
The video game world is full of aborted wonders.

I remember when the announcement for Star Wars 1313 happened and how much excited me and my friend were for the game... "An Uncharted like game, but in Star Wars!!!"
It's a shame neither 1313 nor BF3 ever came out, since they were soo close to be finished

From what I remember, they salvaged the remains of Battlefront 3 to make the psp exclusive Battlefront: Elite Squadron. Same story, ground to space combat, customization, etc. Was actually a great game, even if they just remastered that game for consoles and PC, that would be the closest we could get to what they were planning.
I think both versions were developed at the same time

ES was the PSP and DS ports, with a PS2 version also finished but unreleased
I still have the game on my psp, the story was amazing dude. My favourite aspect of the game was the free transition between ground-orbit-space-mothership combat, people should acknowledge it more often

I still really want a great Star Wars game with ground to space online battles . And the leaks from the canceled battlefront 3 campaign set during order 66 look really good and compelling , still my childhood hope and now I’m 21 and I still hope for this .

I think we'd all love to see this, somehow in someway make a return or a revival I don't care if the game was meant to come out in 2008, I'd love to see it. So very sad.

I’m glad they get paid but it still sucks when you work hard on something and it just gets scrapped, the people who work on these games are passionate about what they do and care about audiences getting to enjoy them, it’s not just like a day job where they’re waiting for 5 to roll around.

This still stings 10+ years later
There was some really old footage that showed a very functional game. It was a clip of a clone trooper on Coruscant getting into a star fighter and entering a space battle. They had seamless land to space battle integration of some sort.

Free Radical was very selective with the footage they took for hypothetical trailers and featurettes, it made the game look more complete that it really was
@@elviejomonca4719 yeah, this. i mean it's really easy to select specific footage but honestly when it was all said and done i doubt battlefront 3 could've had the seamless transition that all of its early footage had. simultaneous space/land battles that you could hop to and fro from in the same match??? sounds way to good to be true.

@@Dylan-xx2tk Because games these days probably spend most of their budget on graphics and CPU heavy shit we don't necessarily need, so they can't spend as much resources on actual gameplay/polish.
Static enviroments and merely 'okay' graphics would unlock so much more opportunity, but can't be marketed on 'shiny' so most publishers wont do it.
No Mans Sky for example does most of this already, it's just that they use random generation and so on. Imagine if what was in space was mostly static and what was on ground was too? Absolutely feasible.

@@TuffMelon NMS can do it because it doesn't have to account for 30+ players running around the map and killing each other. I refuse to believe the Xbox 360/PS3 could've handled a game of this scale when it had difficulty running Battlefield 3/4, where they even had to DOWNSCALE the maps, no matter how much they downgraded the graphics.
I blame the prequel hate for cancellation of these projects and made gorge sell lucusfilm to disney and now a days SW in complete chaos
That's why he sold it, but this game was canceled like 10 years before that, and a lot of star wars games still came put for a long time after. It's just a game that got canceled like so many other games have

Quite disheartening seeing how the PSP struggled to not get crossed to The Shadow Realm when playing MP matches of SWBFES.
Now that sadly will forever be regarded as the ultimate SWBF experience.

I don't know about completly better, it is amazing to fight in the few new maps we have and them be mostly lore accurate, but one downside of the new is that you just spawn in a vehicle and spend your points to get it. Having vehicles spawn in continuously and hopping in or out and having a partner gunner adds a level of strategy, where do you take it? Do you switch to a pilot so you can repair the vehicle when needed, or use a ifferent class for a different strategy like charge a CP, clear the area, then hop out to secure it yourself. Where do you think your side needs more help at to turn the tide, or you're troop count is low so do you either charge and try to take the win or do you hunker down and hold the line as best you can? Many factors for the OG played into getting you a victory especially for multiplayer.

Battlefront II from 2017 actually got really good. DICE saved that game. It just sucks EA abandoned it. There's so many hackers and the PC servers are kind of dead. They peaced out on it to make 2042 which sucked.
I worked as a marketing designer in the game industry for a couple of years, mainly focusing on graphics and artwork for marketing, such as logos, landing pages, key art, banners, etc. and also a bit of UI and in-game art. Every single game I worked on was later cancelled. Half never being announced, and the other half either not making it to release or cancelled shortly after.
It really sucks because that was 2 years of my life that I have nothing to show for. I can't show anyone anything that I was proud of because it doesn't exist anymore.

Dude! My heart just sank. Like this big heavy feeling just popped out... can't we fund this game? I mean I'm down to just pour in some funds to make this happen, a lot of us would support this.

Here's my thing: there is no chance, no chance whatsoever that the technology would have existed to allow for things like seamless space to PlanetSide combat. What has been leaked, was about 3 years old at the time. And it wasn't playable for another 5 (because it wasn't anything more than a video at that point, until the actual game files were leaked).
On a concept level, it absolutely looked awesome. But from a technology standpoint there's no way that the Xbox 360 and the PS3 would have been able to handle it.
No way. And even if they could, there's no way that the servers would have been able to handle it. It would have been running on the same servers as medal of Honor.
What we got was a vertical slice, and in no way indicative of the quality of the actual game.
You clearly have no idea what your talking about the build that leaked wasn’t a vertical slice, it was a March 2008 build the game had been in development for 2 years at that point and yes the space to ground worked flawlessly
It wasn't really canceled. A different developer took on the production and just retitled it Battlefront Elite Squadron and was put on the Psp

I remember seeing the leaked gameplay as a kid and being so excited. The cancelation was such a tragedy. Nowadays the best we got is the dice BFs, but those are just so run of the mill.
Then Disney would license to EA that would squander te opportunity by making two mid battlefront games and only after severe backlash we got two good games with squadrons and Fallen Order

After bf3 was cancelled the data was put on PSP files for star wars battlefront elite squadron bf 3 did kinda come out but as a different title but things were sadly removed from the original file I played it and it was honestly phenomenal it had the ground and space combat intermission and ship boarding and ion cannons and escape pods the campaign for it was solid as well
When it comes to True Star Wars content we just can’t win man, a few small victories here and there but not enough compared to the damage being done.
I remember playing the Nintendo version of the story not knowing that it was intended to be Battlefront III. Even though I was quite young I still thought it was amazing and a lot of fun but don't think I actually ever beat the final boss. Looking back it really was a special and we'll crafted story with solid characters even if the dialogue was only through text if I remember correctly. One pretty unrealistic thing even for SW though was that on Coruscant you fight and win against Grievous alone as a normie clone trooper which I think anyone would see as a little too absurd😅
then TCW came and Grievous could be defeated by padawans and Gungans jajaja sad

Man I loved the OG battlefront despite the obvious balancing issues. But I would like to see a remastered version of the two games and possibly og battlefront 3 somehow being picked up and remade today. HALO MC collection but battlefront style.

SW Battlefront Elite Squadron was the best one tbh and was basically the 3rd game.
It’s truly sad they were so close to finishing it only for it to get scrapped, from the snippets I’ve seen, battlefront 3 looked so promising. So many great Star Wars games cancelled before their time like BF3, KOTOR 3 1313 etc. I hope one day we can get them but I doubt it
I thought it was common knowledge how close the game was to completion. There was an E3 demo if I remember correctly and most people know the community has spun what files they could gather from BF3 prerelease into BF2 as a mod(BF3 Legacy).
I think the worst thing is that you notice the studios who made some great games are gone, all that's left are the big ones that spin our terrible games that become way too competitive to be fun for everyone; but they snap Star Wars or any other franchise name on it and it prints them money.
I feel like if a game gets cancelled, it should legally and immediately become open source so that anyone who wants to band together to finish it, can do so. But companies are going to company… so we’re not allowed to do it, even if it was completely for free.

If i recall correctly, Pandemic requested more funds to get it over the line & Lucasfilm backed another game instead and it absolutely tanked.

From playing the portable versions: jeah missing out on something is the understatement of the century, sw elite squadron for psp was just so badass to play and thinking off a larger version with longer battles ... Damn that would have been a game ...

If this game was announced to be somehow continued the way it was intended but with modern graphics, it would easily be one of the biggest games of all time. Of course it would require years to make but it would be magnificent
Somewhere, in a neighboring universe, our own selves are living a better life, with Battlefront 3 in their libraries.
This may sound naive but you never know. The right person might reopen these IPs, the deadpool movie was on the shelf for years before it was made into a proper film and dead island was shelved for years before it got re-released

I own the psp version of what was to be bf3. That game was ok but you can tell how amazing the game would have been if it was fleshed out. Even seeing people "finish" the game themselves makes me so sad of what we should have got.
It's been common knowledge for years that battlefront 3 was canceled so close to it being done.
Why even cancel it at all? It's bad business practices in my opinion. Why cancel something so close to being finished, even if there isn't a lot of hope it will make the development money back? It would have at the very least brought in something, even good press which in some circumstances is better for the long run.
Instead they canceled it, got bad press and did nothing else memorable.

Yes but let's not be hypocritical without knowing all the facts. Studios that release extremely buggy games or cash grabbers are looked down upon. Yet if a studio cancels a project they're also often looked down upon.

Yeah if the game’s story were revived, I’d change it to have the two main characters be Fett clones that were ARC Troopers. The one that stays loyal to the Empire becomes a Purge Trooper commander, the other joins the Rebels. Neither would be Force-sensitive. Could still be a fun side story IMO.
Considering that bf1/bf2 were my childhood favorite games this continues to hurt even years down the road

The Classic Battlefronts were some of the best Star Wars games in the franchise. Any Star Wars fan can still enjoy it in today's day and age. Wait for the May 4th Star Wars sale for a cheap purchase

Just finish the game and release it, for Christ's sake! What have EA been doing all these years!?! If they were to finish Free Radical's _Battlefront III_ and release it on current-gen consoles, they could literally print money. That they've waited this long and still haven't even addressed this canceled game is absurd.
Take this with a grain of salt, we don't exactly know what the developer means when he said they were this close to the finish line. The finish line could be finalizing the design of the game, it could be a playable state for the programming, there's a lot that goes into game development and there are always a mountain of ideas, concept art, unused ideas, cut content, starting over with many aspects. He could have been talking about them finalizing the combat, but not having many maps designed, or them having finished the rough cut of the single player campaign. This game was certainly not 99% finished from what has leaked online, it really seems like they were just getting to an alpha state of the game but things change so much between alpha and final release, things get patched after release. I think it's safe to say the cancelled games can't just be made anew, like they just need to sprinkle some time over the development and we get new Star Wars games.
I know exactly what was done and what wasnt they where almost content complete. However their where 6 months worth of bugs to fix.

That is one thing Disney could do to flip momentum. There are so many projects that got canceled in that last decade that was before and because of Disney. Get to OG battlefront 3 finished, even without updating the graphics people would be appreciative. Also end "legends" properly with the sword of the Jedi trilogy. People don't tend to respond well when cut off from a story part way through. Look at the game of thrones books, many people flipped on Martin

Old news . . . WAY old news. I'd heard the reason BF3 was cancelled was because Free Radical had gone beyond the agreed upon original scope AND didn't have the game in a state that it would be ready in time for launch. The footage you've shown here is just PART of the footage that leaked YEARS ago. That footage also showed single player story mode and "What if"-style scenarios (e.g. a dark Obi-Wan and a dark side corrupted Yoda). Ultimately, Free Radical built an amazing game, but spent so much time developing content that wasn't approved, that when it came time to fulfill their obligations and meet the intended deadline, they weren't able to do so.
I wish we could go to a dimension where the big 3 weren't canceled
And now, in a decade, we've gotten 1 star wars game worth playing. Almost 2.

I still can't get over how rich the Star Wars games were in my childhood like KOTOR, KOTOR2, Jedi Academy, BF, BF2, Renegade/Elite Squadron. The devs and companies made those games so memorable. It just hurts as a player growing up with those games and ending up with BF 2017. Not to say BF 2017 is a "bad game," but it never fully recovered from its launch.
The cancelled KOTOR remake still breaks my heart too but maybe that was for the best as well.
at this point i just hope DICE get to make a battlefront 3. I know there’s loads of people who say that it’s mid, but honestly once EA dropped it and let DICE do what they wanted with it, it was incredible. still some of my favorite memories in recent years
Considering what dice did to battle field 2042 I wouldn't trust them with shit.
@@rhodesnd3670 I like to believe that it's more of EA wanting the game out yesterday and will force buggy products out the door because they keep thinking they can fix the game during the game's lifecycle. It's tragic.
@@maximcaleb and they did fix it, 6 months the game was dead with like 700 player's on steam, now it has like 10k players and with playstation and Xbox it prolly has like 40k ppl playing the game

Elite Squadrons is good, but it being a watered down PSP port for this game just doesn't pamper it well for me.
Hope the fans have no choice but to play vigilante on resurrecting this potentially great game. Copyrights and canonicity issues be kriffed!
