Agreed. But seeing as George Lucas went back and created that whole droid factory sequence, after living with a fully shot script for quite a while, suggests he was afraid the movie was short on action. And so the most important plot point - the romance - was sacrificed for a boring and way too dragged out action scene. I'm not suggesting a space romcom, but you have to make a romance believable or skip it altogether. Otherwise you end up with the involuntary comedy that is Ep 2.

I’ll defend Lucas for the Dooku head bust it was rewarding upon a recent viewing that his bust was in the Final Cut. From a visual standpoint it shows the respect that the temple’s people had for Dooku which was later named as the busts of Jedi defectors. I think to Lucas it would spill the beans too quickly if he had given insight on the existence of Dooku and the separatists. @@nemou4985 That's actually what happens in the novel, which probably worked off the original script. And in the novel, further scenes also make it understandable on Padmé's end. That beginning scene where Padme speaks against that war in the senate made the latter plot have so much sense. Of course Palpatine had to find a way to get her out of the way in order to put his plans in motion. With Padme being there, the vote will most likely result in negotiation rather than violence. When both assassinations as a mean of discouragement failed, Palpatine resorted to getting her off world. Her being there is literally the biggest nail in the shoe for Palpatine. The scene also helped establish her character a lot and can be connected to her other speech in the Clone Wars series where she speaks against further expanding the Clone army.

I disagree. The Trade Federation was already suspected of being a member of the CIS. They had a vast Droid army. Having an army is a huge advantage in negotiations.
Negotiations for peace are not going to work if one side is militarily stronger. The stronger side has no reason to negotiate if they are strong enough to simply take what they want.
Besides having an army may be necessary if negotiations fail.

All of these Padme scenes should have been kept in. They completely flesh out her character, showing the person she is, and the motivations she has. The final cut of AotC has some of the most stilted dialogue, especially between Padme and Anakin. But these scenes have such a natural flow to them, especially within the context of the rest of the movie. I'm sure these scenes were cut due to time constraints, which I think is a shame, specifically for Padme's character.
I think for me, the knowing look of Padme's mom when they are discussing Anakin is just *chef's kiss*. In general, Padme and Anakin's build up to their relationship would have been so much more impactful if those scenes were as nuanced as some of these scenes.

I loved seeing the economic and political struggles in TPM and it was even more amazing when Darth Plagueis pretty much solely focused on that which is my favourite Star Wars book ever. The backlash to the politics imo played a big part in why the ST is so bad, it tries to retell the OT and retroactively makes all the progression and accomplishments of the universe redundant because they were too afraid to delve into the politics. Now the galaxy is stagnant and repetitive whilst it ruins the established story and legacy of characters. It doesn’t matter the rebels triumphed over the empire in the OT, it gets reset by the worst most lazy macguffin I’ve ever seen that snipes a system from a galaxy away at faster than hyperspace and everyone can see it on different planets despite light not working that way in the Star Wars universe too haha

@@protector_of_the_realms I agree. I especially hate whenever someone calls Lucas an idiot for a political subplot in TPM, (Which is bad enough on its own) and then proceeds to bash him for cutting these scenes. Congratulations! You're whining has gotten a lot of the substance removed and helped ruin the sequels. And now you're going to complain about THAT? It just reeks of hypocrisy. These people should be embarrassed that they were so bored when we saw the inner workings of the Galactic Republic.

@@officialmonarchmusic Absolutely agree. The prequels and their politics have expanded the Star Wars lore. Instead of what many thought was a circus with glow sticks, we got a vast and living universe, but some stupid morons found it boring and they said that "This is not Star Wars", or even "It does not feel like Star Wars" and other nonsense. It looks like they wanted Lucas to go the dumb Remake route and just copy the Original Trilogy.
Well, now they can be happy, we have "beautiful" sequels, where the whole plot is a poor remake of the Original Trilogies, and all Lore and politics are absent as a fact. And now we can enjoy this huge pile of....content and eat it with spoons until our stomachs get sick. I despise with all my heart this stupid Prequel Hate, George Lucas should have just waited for a new generation of fans to grow up and be able to perceive his creation without the rose-tinted nostalgia and stupid hate.

Dooku becomes a very tragic character, because he's basically this twisted version of Obi's master, objectively bad, but willing to compromise Palpatine's plan of taking over the Republic. Just like Qui-Gon thought, Dooku saw the Jedi as arrogant and blinded, proven by Obi-Wan when he said they would've known about the Sith.

It's not like Lucas hasn't released extended versions of his movies before. Both of his director cuts of his first two films(THX-1138 and American Graffiti) add back five minutes of footage that was originally cut out by their respective studios.
The special editions of the original trilogy are longer than their theatrical versions(although only ANH had scenes cut from the original release added back in)
Finally, the 2001 DVD release of TPM is actually slightly extended from the the theatrical version. The podrace is longer, and there's an extra scene on Corsusant.

There was no crisis before Phantom Menace, the republic was steady for 1 000 years. But it wouldn´t surprise me if Disney decide to invent all sorts of turmoil in order to capitalize on the gap. I always especially liked the scene with Padmè's family and hate that they deleted that. With that scene, we get to know more about her and her background. That and I think it further helped the chemistry and relationship with Anakin. At least that's my opinion anyway.

There’s a few that you didn’t include which I feel wouldn’t have made much sense so I definitely see why they were cut but everything shown here shouldn’t have been cut
It greatly expands the relationship with Anakin and padme that Lucas was trying to build and more thoroughly details who Dooku is as a person for the last few scenes and the library scene

Not long after the film was released, Lucasfilm did a seminar on digital cinema in LA. They showed some behind the scenes footage I haven’t seen elsewhere, including some footage of ObiWan going back to Jango Fett’s apartment and looking around the place. Everything was in disarray as though they had left quickly, which better explains why he is running to the platform as Jango is about to take off.

    • @vectorbeam
      @vectorbeam Год назад

I had a chance to ask Ben Burtt if they would do an extended cut like Lord of the Rings was doing at the time. His answer was essentially that George Lucas felt that each film should only have one definitive version and that they should be about 2 hours long.

  • @sethzwicker3631

You can tell that Lucas didn't entirely have it planned out how Palpatine would take on his ROTJ face. He's clearly wearing additional makeup here as if to show he's slowly transitioning to that look. I guess when they got to ROTS they liked the idea of doing it all in one scene better and so they used the lightening. Up to that scene it's just Ian's natural face where he looks younger than he does in AOTC.

I enjoy that we got to see the Jedi Temple's hangar in these deleted scenes. It made sense for the Jedi to have their own personal hangar bay for their Delta Starfighters, so seeing it adds some spice to the worldbuilding.
