- How did Japanese teriyaki sauce and waves of Korean immigration produce Seattle’s most iconic dish? Yara traveled to Seattle before the coronavirus pandemic to learn how the city’s Asian American community redefined the local food scene with an affordable, tasty delight: chicken teriyaki.

It took me years to realize that teriyaki shops on every corner was not norm outside of WA.
yeah same. was sad when I moved away
I moved around a lot as a child. I grew up mostly in Rochester and Olympia, WA, but spent more time around the country. Washington's Asian's food culture is nothing to question... Happy Teriyaki, Panda Inn, etc...
Also, ASIAN FOOD WITHDRAWALS ARE REAL!!!!!
Here in central west coast Florida, we have Chinese food in every plaza but no place comes close to Seattle teriyaki! I had some teriyaki at a place over on Whidbey Island not far from the Navy base that was my favorite.
Same
As a Seattleite now living in Vegas, Seattle style teriyaki is one of the things I miss about the PNW.
Yes...Washington teriyaki is hard to find...Yup, in Vegas I have found a few places that are okay but nothing like WA for the quality, quantity, and price!
Yeah teriyaki in Vegas is lame. They really don't have many asian options in general on vegas
As a Seattleite living in Japan, it's one of the things I miss most.
Fact over fact
As a native Seattleite, can confirm the Teriyaki in the PNW is unmatched. I just moved to the east coast, there is nothing even close to the Teriyaki from home. I miss it so much
I graduated UW in 2009. In college I lived off of teriyaki. I ate it all the time. Seattle really does have teriyaki culture.
Yessss Seattle/Puget Sound teriyaki is the best. Ever since I moved away, I've never been able to find a place with the same taste.
i miss it so much.
yeah tacoma had some amazing teriyaki I remember eating all the time growing up.
I remember there was 3 teriyaki places right next to my high school, and ever since I moved to Phoenix for school, I haven’t been able to find anything as good...
You missed the whole “Burger, Teriyaki” phenomenon! If you go to a burger shop in touristy place it will almost always sell teriyaki. I thought that was so normal until I left WA.
I live in MA and plenty of places around here offer a teriyaki burger. Usually with pineapple because pineapple is awesome on just about anything.
@@jjmblue7 no she means joints that sell burgers and teriyaki
Growing up, I assumed everywhere had teriyaki. When I visited my cousins in Minneapolis I suggested we go to a "teriyaki joint" and they looked at me like I was crazy.
I don’t think I really appreciated the teriyaki culture here until I visited California and there wasn’t a small teriyaki shop on every block
More from WA state PLEASE!
Hey! If you want to see more from Yara in Washington you should check out this piece on this $300 clam and why it's so important to Native Americans and China ruclips.net/video/IrsPxHbbOqo/видео.html
Yes a secret we as Koreans have known. And it's not just teriyaki stands we run Japanese restaurants as well. But Seattle also has a lot of Asian cuisine. Pho, teriyaki, Thai, and now Korean and Hawaiian restaurants are everywhere. We don't just own smoke shops and cornerstores.
Yes, why you run our restaurants, open Korean restaurants.
@@harryroger1739 we actually have many Korean restaurants and a few Chinese restaurants, I e even seen a few Chinese, pho and a Thai restaurant owned by a Korean person. I just find it hilarious how no one has a problem with white people owning all these different ethnic restaurants but now it's a problem because it's us. I've also seen a Chinese man own and run a Japanese restaurant and Japanese food being served at Chinese buffets. Ask yourself why aren't Japanese opening up restaurants that people are going to? And why aren't they out doing all the other restaurants? Korean people open a business where the money is at. If you have a problem don't eat there. Not my fault that people keep eating at these restaurants. Not one twisted their arms, and no one is holding a gun to their heads. As if there's some type of rule that Korean people can only cook Korean food. Then if that's the case, please stop cooking our food because I see you guys trying to cook our food and failing each and every time!
Im a Mexican immigrant that moved to Seattle and i LOVE teriyaki chicken its my favorite food
Korean immigrants operate more independent restaurants than you even know.
+Tony Indindoli What about Japanese immigrants?
@@Kawayoporu In WA, almost every Japanese restaraunt is Korean owned. I lived there for 12 years and always heard Korean behind the counter. It's not that Japanese don't exist, I think it's just they tend to be involved in other businesses. I've seen maybe 2 restaraunts that were Japanese owned, but primarily working in more white collar jobs.
+@@Blaze6432 I wasn't supposed to use youtube at this point after it's past the day my account was created, wondered why this reply not happen like 2 weeks or a week ago, so your reply was just 2 minutes ago, so are there more restaurants owned by Japanese then koreans?
I loved this video, I love Seattle and I Love Teriyaki !
I love my local teriyaki place. Huge portions, great food.
You know you're in the PNW when there is a teriyaki spot on the left and a strip club on the right. Lol
I never knew this. Awesome
As a filipino I always dreamt of the american life. Hoping someday I will be able to experience the beauty of america
No you don't...
Hindi ka makakapag lakad dito ng hindi nanganganib buhay mo every time na lalabas ka ng bahay.
Trust me, there's nothing to romanticize about it. You might as well try Canada.
@@jqa16 Saying that while on an American App..... despite the fact that no other country currently produces the number of companies and innovations as the US.
@@questworldmatrix Canada is much better.
I’m drooling. 🤤 The food looks good too! 🤭😜😍
They are following the money and culinary trend. Before this it was common for Koreans to run sushi and Chinese restaurants.
great video as always! i followed your twitter where you were searching for a mentor, but i think you should mentor others, yara! loll
After I moved to Japan, I was confused and disappointed that I couldn't find "teriyaki" as I knew it. Yakitori, yes, but it's not quite the same. Seattle's Asian food is world class.
Watching this while I eat teriyaki chicken in Tacoma lol
Very cool
yesssss ive been saying this my whole lifeeee!
Miss Seattle teriyaki so much. Grew up on it & took it for granted
Same. It's the meal when you don't wanna cook
Everyone got their own favorite teriyaki spots. Mine is in West Seattle’s Nikko Teriyaki!
Nikko is legit. For a more hipster version I'm digging grillbird. Spendy and long waits though.
Happy palace teriyaki
That was my go to spot living in West Seattle for 12 years. I've since moved to SF and NYC. Teriyaki is what I miss most about Seattle. Possibly more than my own family.
period
If someone ever asks about something uniquely Seattle, I always bring them to a mom-pop teriyaki restaurant.
that place is nasty
when i lived in seattle, i ate at one of these two or three times a week.
My city ❤️
Teriyaki was as standard meal in my home growing up.
I miss these
grew up going to a local Toshi's and they closed down maybe 15 years ago... still miss that damn place
This is the bomb!!
Cool
Love me some good Yaki!!!! 😍 been eating it for over 20 years, so sad I can't find that out here in Hawaii now
Best teriyaki ever was on delridge right before you get on the WS freeway
Yasuko's! West Seattle. Also on Broadway and in the U-District. Long gone.
@@dcarr2506 it was called Yoshis
@@OnKIDZwitMe Oh? Ok different place.
Well, as an outsider, I never knew there's a whole Teriyaki movement in a major US city!
Delightful to know that average Americans there don't only consume the stereotypical American burgers and fries situation
Well no, we're the third largest country by population IN the world...we have more offerings more than most people realize because they listen to their media too damn much. We have way more things here than people realize
Used to live in San Diego. Missed the teriyaki so much when I moved back to Washington I ate it everyday for a month 😂
I LOVE TERIYAKI
If you're from seattle you know "happy at the bay" is the best teriyaki spot in Seattle. Seattle is special.
Every 10 miles have a good teriyaki spot
i was partial to Mom's on 5th ave.
That patently false. Everyone knows it's Toshios off Rainier
Every time my family visits me in Seattle, I always suggest we go get Teriyaki or Pho :)
Crazy I grew up eating rishi's teriyaki . Just gotta walk across the street
living 20 minutes from seattle i got about 15 teriyaki spots I can eat at
This reminds me of Portland and Vietnamese restaurants. We also have teriyaki and Thai restaurants everywhere.
Yea, not like Seattle tho. Trust and believe that
If you have to go more than 5 minutes from home to get to teriyaki in Western Washington, you’re living in the Erin neighborhood. It is truly the food of our state and has been my dietary staple since childhood.
Home yes I did ☺️
Teryaki is a healthy food , and i love seattle teryaki
Omg it's hilarious because i recognize some of those people.
Hi my friend 👋 I have a transplant daughter living in Tacoma which I will visit when I retire (I'm in LA). I too love Teriyaki chicken would have appreciated if could've listed some of those locations in the description box 👍
There's too many to list but here are a few
Bento Teriyaki
Goofy Goose Burgers & Teriyaki
Hana Teriyaki
Joy Teriyaki
Happy Teriyaki #4 and #7
Definitely check out the amazing Pho restaurants as well
@@snakefinn 👍 Thanks 😉
I miss Seattle teriyaki!
I didn't know teriyaki was such a big thing,, just liked Toshi's chicken
Seattle ruined coffee and teriyaki for me. It is so good there that can't get it anywhere else
Teriyaki and salad. Alternating with smoked salmon and salad. Seattle.
Thank you for showing Teriyaki 1st. That was the spot in U District 😢
Hey in case y'all jump State like I did they have good teriyaki over here in Idaho too.
I mean...it's where it's from. It was invented here because in Japan teriyaki was primarily for fish and Toshi decided to make it with chicken
Can't fine it nowhere but Washington state. :-(
Amen one of my favorite dishes even yakima has some of the best new york teriyaki restaurants 🙏🏻 most people will love this dish !
Yup we have Starbucks and teriyaki in every corner
I have only had teriyaki once in Nairobi o fcourse.
I have to open falafel restaurant and I wanna call it vigtirin meat
Best one is on 99w in Tigard Oregon! next to a taco bell and fred meyer ! Yoll thank me later
You can tell what neighborhood someone is from based on their favorite teriyaki spot. Manna teriyaki all the way!
Manna is good. Midori is also really good
This^^ Also, Manna's homemade sauce is sooo good
I ❤️ Asian Americans 😭
Best teriyaki in all of washington is off of 19th and Ballenger way called teriyaki plus.
Including inflation.... 2.10 in 1976 is about the same price he charging now
100%
Affordable price no more. Cheap chicken thigh and rice meal is now $14-17 for the most basic marinated meal.
I miss $5 teriyaki bowls in our area.
Ya'll sleepin on Teriyaki Wok in SeaTac big time. The best in WA!
AW MAN resit in peace Yummy Bites on The Ave
Toshis is the original but TOSHIOS is the greatest of all.
Ask people who have so many coffee shops.
Several Korean market stands in the famous Lexington Market in downtown Baltimore advertise "Seoul" Food. They serve collar greens, pig feet, chitterlings, fried chicken, etc. Very innovative...I guess?
American Dream, man. Come here poor, not even able to speak the language. Open a shop and pay the rent. Live frugally above the store. Send the kids to Yale. Make great food for a lot of happy customers. Gotta love it!
Is it halal??
I don't think so 😞
The sake definitely knocks it off the halal list.
If you want some, look out for halal certification in the restaurants. There are places with halal recipes.
Nikko Teriyaki best in the town imo 😤
It would still be SEATTLE, but less teriyaki
You missed nikko teriyaki it’s top 3
The best teriyaki is located in Bremerton WA... Tom's Teriyaki
Hawaiian bbq is 10 times better than teriyaki. Come to cali to try and you'll see Hawaiian bbq is the best.
We have that here in Seattle as well.
Yeahhhh...no...
Comparing apples and oranges here. Both are excellent
AGAIN..thats false and you sound like a homer trying to make something that's not the same or even better
I thought they were owned by Japanese immigrants, it doesn't make sense, but good the guy with no hair is totally Japanese settle calling it immigrant!
But then hearing none-Japanese immigrants, again, why they do not talk about Japanese immigrants too?
Not in India
This man personally discriminates against Asian Americans btw.
I can't put 100% trust, without a reasonable doubt, that they are serving actual Chicken.
that would be an unreasonable doubt, and racist to boot.
@@carllarsen Not racist. But pretty unreasonable.
Unless we wish to destroy ourselves, we must implement a permanent UBI now. Then we can transition to a RBE. Also support the Money Free Party and The Venus Project so we can go beyond politics poverty and war.
I would like 2 of whatever you're having.
Seattle teriyaki is overrated. There are better, or rather had been better Teriyaki places in Los Angeles.... but many of them are now closed due to Democrats' Policy of lock downs during covid.. Luckily, many of these business owners are relocating to Red States. Like Texas and Florida, where Freedom and Business continue to thrive. At least Austin is turning Purple.
Wow this video was a waste of time. There is no real insight here.
Wow this comment was a waste of time. There is no real insight here.
So as a person who is born and raised in Washington state. I grew up in eastern Washington 100 miles north of Spokane in kettle falls. And in eastern Washington there is no teriyaki restaurants. They are all on the west side of the state.
