Really helps - just took delivery of T300s wedge to 5 iron - 7,6,5 have the tech in the back of the club whilst wedge, 9 & 8 are more blade like - I then have. 25 degree hybrid and a 22 degree hybrid then up to 5 wood and 3 wood - the magic of fitting works as I took the new bats out for their first outing on Saturday and scored 6 under my handicap - my first 7 iron finished 6 feet from the stick for a kick in birdie - happy days!!
I have been a follower for years. I appreciate you shedding light to help me look past the advertisements. To see what is really going on. You have made club buying easier for me. I have had several fittings from people that don’t get that.
Hi Mark, Tom Wishon blades gap wedge to 8 iron, then shallow cavity 7 to 5 iron and hybrids in the 3 and 4. Best set I have ever owned. I also have a 5 hybrid for days when I’m not at the races with the 5 iron. It’s also a belter from lush rough and links courses. I was custom fit by Melvyn at Four Counties golf about 4 years ago and this was his recommendation. My best decision ever. 👍
Life, as I know it, doesn't afford a fitting and new club's so I blend my game around the info you give from your amazing videos. I can not tell you how much I have learnt from the FACTS you supply. Thank you all.
Went from Titleist 716 CBs to Mizuno JPX 919 - Forged in 4-7; Tour in 8-PW. My mid-long iron play has been a consistent weakness so wanted to get a bit of extra help/forgiveness in the top half of my iron set. Had settled on 8-PW in the Tour head and 4-6 in the Forged pretty quickly, once it was obvious during a fitting that Mizuno was the way to go, so the only decision was what to do with 7 iron. While I could easily have played either, I decided to take the extra little bit of help on offer from the Forged. These clubs really do lend themselves to blended/combo sets, both in terms of aesthetics and also feels/sound. I also made sure to alter lofts across the set to ensure proper gapping. Not had them long, but so far very happy with the change.
Love this conversation!!! Knowing the style of play is such a huge asset here... I'm DEFINITELY blending my next set after watching so many of these dang things... Mark, you've sold me!!!
Mark, honestly one of your best videos and really a summary of your last 2 years of videos with you speaking about what's in your bag and why it is there - it has helped me enormously to just recently re-build my own new set to address my weaknesses and to not harm my strengths. What I know today about CGs, spin, peak height, descent angles, Titleist fitting center wedge bounce video, Dan's hate of offset, low spin knuckleballs, slingballs, the danger of too low spin drivers, building in a hybrid with a draw preference, path & face to path, etc, etc is really all because of videos like this. With all of that info, I built a set to meet my demands (good distance with my irons but no knuckleballs, enough peak height in my longest iron, switch to hybrids when that was done, wanting certain clubs to draw with lie angle, deciding what I want my 3wood to do, figuring out if a long hybrid or 5 wood is a better choice, using wedge bounce to minimize your weaknesses and finally finding a long low spin driver that isn't too low spin that is playable. With all this knowledge, I ended up using a low offset distance iron, re-adding loft to them at the low end for better bounce / spin / and needed shorter distances, and then stopping at a 5 iron that I can carry 195 with a 45 degree descent angle. Next was a short hybrid that is set to a slight draw, a then a long hybrid that has a slight fade that may be replaced with a 5 wood that has higher peak height. No way would I have known any of this 20 years ago - and I can confidently say it has reduced my handicap from 11 to 5.
Thanks! In particular, the advice you mentioned from Titelist about building a set and the possibility of compromises was excellent. Further, the mental exercise of considering all that was revealed in the club data was a great clarifying exercise for me!
I can't tell you how much better my golf mental health became the moment I stopped worrying about lofts and numbers on clubs! Instead I just think of my bag as 14 slots, and I have distances that each slot meets. If a slot has too low a distance, then I work out what I need to either do myself, or equipment I can acquire to get that slot to the desired distance. If it means having all 4 iron heads on different shafts and club lengths, then so be it :).
Isn't it ironic that as blending sets becomes popular that the vast majority of "Custom Fit" sessions for irons still only use a seven iron and so there is no way of knowing where to transition and gap the clubs correctly.
Adrian Dutton yes. Massive problem. There’s a regional golf shop chain in my area that lets you demo every club in the set. No interchangeable shafts but you can at least see the looks and get numbers based on stock club set up.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. How can we blend only hitting a 7 iron. I like the idea of having a thinner top line on my 7, 8, 9, PW (like I do on my wedges) but I know I need all the help I can get on longer irons so I 'have' to go for the game improver irons through all the irons.
Hi Mark, Yeah I have a blended set called Pro Combo by Nike back in... 2002. Amazing how A) Nike was such in advance in their approach B) Nike is missed since they quit the club business and C) the marketing from the remaining producers can be over complicated. Cheers Stephane
Not blended and struggling with the concept of the blend given my results. Gamed my new t200 and loved them as much as when they were fitted. Struggled with distance control, so we went to the range and put each club on flight scope. Stock distances were not surprisingly 1 club longer. Stepping on them consistently added 8 yards per club with almost no exception. The issue I had was the gap between the 7 and 8. Where the button : ) kicked in on the 7, all of the sudden I picked up an extra half club over the 8 and even a bit more than the others when I stepped on it. So for me, blending in a more players club on the short irons, however much I'd want to, just wouldn't work as it would produce an ever bigger gap. Conversely, blending in a 300 on the longer irons would produce another gap or two in my bag on top of it. So without messing with lofts, it seems like t200s throughout the bag make the most sense for me. If there were one exception it might be trying to go to t100 just for the 7 or maybe the 6 as well, because I'd prefer to have a gap at the longer end of the bag, but at the end of the day, hitting the 7 190 instead of 170 felt better to me. : )
Great video, I took 4 iron and 5 wood out to replace with 3 and 4 hybrids as for how I play, they give me what I need. Next iron set, gonna have to think on the blend, particularly 4,5,6i - especially as fitting is generally only around 7i 🤔⛳👍
My Ping fitting didn't mention that option.. but I like the concept and could use a bit more distance in my 5. I have no 4 iron but consider buying a new 5' and a 4' of something different. Mine is Ping i200, stiff, Driver Ping G410 stiff and both irons and driver fitted to me. But rest of woods are a mix from previous bags of Taylormade 5' stiff, a 3 HL 19 reg, and a stiff Rouge 3 wood pulled down of the shelve randomly based on appealing effect 🙂- I understand the benefits of getting fitted and probably needing for my woods to cover the distance spectre you mention.
Lots do think about on this video. You should perhaps include standard deviation of the distances, spin, launch angels as to get the best scores you need to be more consistent.
I don’t have a blended set but I am going in to get a complete Titleist fitting next week. I’ve played the AP2s since they came out and expect to be fitted into T100s up through their 7 iron. The question is whether the data suggests the T200s or 300s after that. I know you were impressed with the launch and spin rates of the T300s (from previous video), which is why I assume you went with them. I was wondering if you considered the T200s blended in with your 100s. It’s mostly cosmetic for me (200s vs 300s). This video is very helpful.
Great video guys, explained it well and made it very clear. I've been thinking of getting a whole set of MBs from PW-4, I'll have to rethink that. PW-6 in MB, 5-iron in T100 and 4-iron in T200 perhaps? Time to get fitted.
I have the T200 5-PW but I'm thinking about T300 for a 4 iron. The rest are a mishmash of woods and then Vokey wedges for 48, 52, 60, but my 56 is Cleveland.
I game the t100’s but I would love to have a blended set to have a little more support with my longer irons! Unfortunately, none of the shops where I live offer blended sets!
I would love to see a similar video but instead have every clubhead at the exact same loft....say maybe 34*. Now that would be an awesome comparison!!! It would be great to see if there is any difference in peak heights, spin, carry, etc.
I play SM7 vokeys down thru pitching wedge and then my set irons are 9-5 then i go to a 23° hybrid and then to an 18° 5 wood. I guess that is somewhat blended.
“Blending” is becoming such a hot option, according to one of the sales associates at the local PGA TOUR Superstore, Mizuno will actually be shipping blended boxed Iron sets to stores for off-the-rack purchase. The set will be HMB 4-6, MB 7-PW. No way for me to confirm this on my own, or if the retail price will be different from a pure HMB or MB set.
Currently play MP33’s. 1 iron, 3 to 9 Iron. Very keen on blending for the next season. Would probably be 3,4 & 5 T100 and 6,7,8 & 9 in the MB’s but would clealy need to test my long irons against the T100’s as ive no problem getting my long irons in the air, would be interesting to see the results against my MP33’s with weak lofts in todays standards. The only problem i have is that my local range doesnt offer anything other than a 7 iron trial in any of the titleist irons which beggers belief considering all im hearing is set blending. I fully expected my local range to have trial long irons in all the titleist range
I see a lot about blending heads is there much data around blending shafts? Wedge shafts are always different so maybe long irons shafts being different might not be utter madness?
No, i210 5i-PW with 2 hybrids. i210s are, by current standards, relatively weakly lofted (33 degree 7i) which results in 5i being lofted at 26 degrees. With some lessons I am seeing really nice high ball flight with the 5i. The issue is what is the break point where reducing loft either does not result in more distance or at the more extreme, failure to launch. I am pretty sure a 4i in the i210s would be a problem for me which is why I then move into hybrids. IMO anyone considering a blended set of irons should also consider whether replacing more of the lower irons with hybrids would be better
AP2 7,8,9 iron AP3 4,5,6 iron TMB 2 iron Cobra F9 Driver, 3 wood, and 3 hybrid with Vokey wedges 46, 52, 58 degree. AP3 irons lofted to match AP2’s works well for me 👍🏻🏌🏽♂️
I'm playing Callaway Rogue Irons 5-PW and 50 (bent to 49), 54 and 60 Ping Glide wedges. I would consider swapping out my 7 or 8 to PW for something that looks a little better and closer in looks to the Glides. Be nice to know what could blend with the Rogues.
With a limited budget I'm a bit stuck on options. I have my Callaway Apex forged Cavity backs and my older set of callaway X-18 Pro Series from back in the day. But the older clubs have an older loft, so the older 5 iron is like the newer 7 iron. I also feel the forged bladed ones are easier to strike, although they should be harder. In my case I don't feel I get any added help from blending even though I feel that I should be. Does that make sense? So my question is, is it important to blend clubs from the same generation so that the distances and ease of use match-up?
I was considering a blended set of Mizuno MP PW-7 with the HMB 6 & 5 Iron, but the Mizuno fitting cart at the local PGA TOUR Superstore only has 7 Iron heads, and I felt more comfortable with the HMB 7 Iron, and since I'm currently using JPX 900, with a similar top line, just decided to go HMB all the way.
Paul Milsom Began to realize that I couldn’t hold onto every club forever, so I’m not so averse to using some as trade-ins. Down to only six sets of irons, seven if you count the HMBs on the way. Seriously, it’s been my obsession with finding the perfect hybrids to match the Mizuno’s I was using at the time that was filling the club closet. Tip: Save those empty iron set shipping boxes for storage! 😂
@@joeperez3520 I have a loft full of empty club boxes, and a couple of bag boxes, but have sold most of my unused sets now, 1 or 2 drivers still for sale with my golf pro, on commission
@@paulmilsom1346 I should be more open to trading off a lot more of my clubs when I get new ones, but some I could never part with, such as my PRGR 17* 200i hybrid.
@@joeperez3520 I have a Ping 54° tour wedge that I wouldn't part with, everything else is always on borrowed time, well, maybe a Cobra 4 wood might be reprieved
The thing I would consider doing if I were Dan is: - make his CB 6 iron 1 degree stronger or replace with a TS200 6 iron and make it 1 degree weaker - replace his CB 5 iron with the TS200 5 iron - replace his CB 4 iron with the TS300 4 iron Taken altogether that should significantly improve the spacing & peak height at the top end of his bag and actually add new distances that he can play to with irons. It should also flow better into his favourite 5wood he carries. It may also make available a new specialty club in his bag if this frees up a club choice.
Mine is a schmorgasboard of Callaway Apex 19 5 to 7, Apex 19 Pro 8 to PW then three SM7s, M1 hybrid 19 and and old RSi hybrid - twenty something degrees. (all are custom fit )
I answered "No" to blending, but I carry a 25° 816 hybrid, and a 5 iron AP1, which are similar lofts, but I get more distance and higher flight from the hybrid, which kind of works as a 4 iron, but higher flight, and gaps me better into my 21° hybrid, and then into my 4 wood fairway. So maybe this isn't blending, but more of a gapping thing?
I don't mind blending if the lower lofted irons (T200,T300) keep the offset the same as the Blades or CB's. Unfortunately the offset is huge in my eye.
Mark, is there a correlation to landing angle and back spin in terms of stopping power. The distance on the 9 Iron was vastly different, landing angle almost identical with slight differences in spin across the models. Is workability and forgiveness on mishits, really the only difference in the heads ?
Would an AP2/T100 set be considered pre blended to a certain extent (considering the tungsten inserts and AMT shafts)? I’ve just bent the lofts on the top end to help my carry yardages out a bit and it seems to have worked just fine. I do have a question in regards to losing a wedge in favor of adding an extra club at the top end. What’s Dan’s bag makeup looking like at the moment with the loss of the gap wedge?
Blending to way to complicated. I do not. But I am interested in these t series. I currently play ping i15. Yes I know they are old and I need a new set. I’m in between t200 and T300. I do want more distance my current 7 iron goes 150-155 yards. Any suggestions?
Quite funny this talk of blended sets being the next best thing. Wilson Staff Progressives and John Letters Trilogy sets from the early 1990s were so far ahead of the time that they didn’t catch the imagination. Now the modern marketing machine dictates that this is what we should buy increasing the unit cost as we’re buying separate clubs and not really a blended set. My Progressives went from 2 iron - SW - 10 clubs that were perfectly gapped and all had the same look and feel. Taking inflation into account, my 10-club set probably cost the same as 4 clubs now!!
Back in the day if you had the money you would but a “matched set” which meant 2 to 9 iron plus a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. A “matched set” meant the distances from number to number were also matched and all the clubs felt the same [ie; same swing weight]. And a 9 iron was a modern pitching wedge - even a “gap wedge”. Today at the bottom of the bag some people even carry 4 “wedges”. Why? How many players hit a full 60 degree wedge; or any of the other ones they carry to “hit a number”? On US resort courses maybe - but not in the real world. A “pitching wedge” is for playing less than full shots so all you need is a pitching wedge with the bounce and grind that fits your course. Same with the “sand wedge”. It depends on the type of sand and the type of usual grass lie you might want to pitch from 50 yards or less. Ask the late great Severiano Ballesteros about all that. At the top of the bag carry a couple of “hybrids” for height and carry distance [especially from the rough] which are really just small headed persimmon 4 or 5 woods, instead of the “matched set” long irons. You will score better on average. IN THE MEANTIME JUST PLAY GOLF INSTEAD OF PRETENDING IT IS A VIDEO GAME PLAYED INDOORS WITH A LAUNCH MONITOR. Which is the basic message Mark gives with his reviews.
Mark - can you do a video expanding on why you prefer peak height over spin these days? I’ve been a follower for a long time and it always used to be spin > for you so you wouldn’t go long over greens. Appreciate your hard work with the content, bruh! 👍
My bad, bruh - must’ve been tricked by the “thicker” top lines on your new irons so I just assumed they’re low spinning. I’m so used to you using blades that anything else is mind blowing, haha. That’s incredible that you get a little help while maintaining a spin you like. I feel like that’s the ultimate goal 🙂👍
Taylormade M5 driver Titleist TS2 fairway wood Titleist Hybrid Callaway irons Titleist SM7 Wedges Taylormade Putter Looking at anew set of irons but not sure what HELP PLEASE
If spin is not dropping off, land angle and peak height are the same, I really don’t get why you wouldn’t take the extra distance / help on mishit shots? Looks do play a part but I think I could get used to any look if I was getting better results.
Mark and Dan, since I see you manipulating iron heads without shaft and grip, wouldn't be great to have a data base on the heads weight of each clubs series since this type of data is very important to set the swing weight of a full club and that this type of data cannot be found anywhere ? Thanks, Stephane
No, not blended, I have a set of titleist CB 620, 4 to pw, I'm really happy with looks and feel, one day I might be good enough, to move up to MB, dream on lol
Is it still considered blending if you only have a single iron in another model? Isn't the typical use of hybrids instead of long irons blending? What about wedges, same thing?

Yes 5-PW 620 MB. 3&4 620 CB. Love them. Thanks to Dan for the fit👍
I don't have a blended set by your definition, but between my wedges, irons, and hybrids (24° 5 / 21° 4 / 19° 3) it feels quite blendy to me.

Hi Mark, I have also 2 6 irons for loft and gapping ( Mizuno JPX919 Tour PW - 6 and Hot Metal Pro 6 iron (5 iron).
Great video Mark really informative keep up the good work
Yes! 4, 5, 6 CB and 7, 8, 9, PW MB
I game the mizuno mp-30s 5-pw, I have the 4-3iron to my set but not forgiving in the long irons
Great video, I’m waiting to get my t200 5-W delivered this week then look at what gaps I need to fix. When are we getting the diet/fitness vlog Mark?
I don't blend my irons as I use jpx forged 900 but do use TM Sldr hybrids and Cleveland Rtx 3 wedges.
Can you do a blend test on Mizuno please brah? Keep up the good work, great content/opinions!
Already done bruh

With a limited budget I'm a bit stuck on options. I have my Callaway Apex forged Cavity backs and my older set of callaway X-18 Pro Series from back in the day. But the older clubs have an older loft, so the older 5 iron is like the newer 7 iron. I also feel the forged bladed ones are easier to strike, although they should be harder. In my case I don't feel I get any added help from blending even though I feel that I should be. Does that make sense? So my question is, is it important to blend clubs from the same generation so that the distances and ease of use match-up?
Fantastic vid. I hope this helps Dan FINALLY GET UP!!
No blend for me this year but next year im getting pw-8 mb, 7-6 cb, 5 t100, and 4 t200 to get better flights throughout my bag.
I had the original blended set from Nike, Pro Combo, cavities 3,4 , muscle 5,6,7 and blades 8,9,pw as a standard set
Probably should come to you for a fitting, Joe, you probably have more clubs than the pro shops? 🤔😄
The thing I would consider doing if I were Dan is:
- make his CB 6 iron 1 degree stronger or replace with a TS200 6 iron and make it 1 degree weaker
- replace his CB 5 iron with the TS200 5 iron
- replace his CB 4 iron with the TS300 4 iron
Taken altogether that should significantly improve the spacing & peak height at the top end of his bag and actually add new distances that he can play to with irons.
195 yd 4 iron... Weaken the loft of the T200 or strengthen the loft of T100? Dispersion, acoustics and aesthetics could then be the deciding factors?
I’m currently blending Callaway Big Bertha 4 - 7 hybrid irons and Callaway Rogue X 8 - SW irons
Yes! AP1 4-6, AP3 7-PW
Great information just wish companies would have full sets to test so if wudnt be a guess as where to make the changes
620 MB 7,8,9,P 620 CB 4,5,6 u500 3 u510 2
I answered "No" to blending, but I carry a 25° 816 hybrid, and a 5 iron AP1, which are similar lofts, but I get more distance and higher flight from the hybrid, which kind of works as a 4 iron, but higher flight, and gaps me better into my 21° hybrid, and then into my 4 wood fairway. So maybe this isn't blending, but more of a gapping thing?
I've been using a 710 AP1 5-6, AP2 7-W for almost 10 yrs. I go up to hybrid after the 5.
I don't mind blending if the lower lofted irons (T200,T300) keep the offset the same as the Blades or CB's. Unfortunately the offset is huge in my eye.
All my standard irons 2-pw are silver scott. Cleveland wedges, Ping eye 2 woods
I blend mizzy MP-h5 4,5 and MP-25 6-9 and vokey 46,50,54,58
8 to P = 620 CB
5 to 7 = 718 AP2
Love it 🙏
Quite funny this talk of blended sets being the next best thing.
I have Maltby M-06 irons, Driver (10 degree), H3 and H4 hybrids and Snake Eyes wedges.
I’m with PXG and have a blended set.
I play PW to 6i in MB, 5i is CB, 4i is T100, 2i U500
Is it normal for euro players to fit for total iron distance rather than carry distance?
Not sure I do. My irons are not low spinning????
My bad, bruh - must’ve been tricked by the “thicker” top lines on your new irons so I just assumed they’re low spinning. I’m so used to you using blades that anything else is mind blowing, haha. That’s incredible that you get a little help while maintaining a spin you like. I feel like that’s the ultimate goal 🙂👍
Would anyone recommend going 620CBs from Pw-5i, and the T100 for the 4i?
Mizuno MP54 4-pw....they are lovely...that being said I would love some mp 4 7-w in a perfect world.
Is the Bridgestone TOUR B JGR HF2 Irons on the review schedule? Thank you
Does the T series irons technology continue into the 8i, 9i, P, and W? Or stop at the 7i? Thank you
10/10 Mark, would watch again
I wish I was closer to you guys for fitting
Taylormade M5 driver Titleist TS2 fairway wood Titleist Hybrid Callaway irons Titleist SM7 Wedges Taylormade Putter
Looking at anew set of irons but not sure what HELP PLEASE
Would love to see a blending video for the TaylorMade P range
If spin is not dropping off, land angle and peak height are the same, I really don’t get why you wouldn’t take the extra distance / help on mishit shots? Looks do play a part but I think I could get used to any look if I was getting better results.
YES
Apex MB (8-PW), 8 is one strong
Apex Pro (6, 7)
Apex CF16 (5i) one weak
Apex 3 (20) and 4 (23) hybrid
Well done as usual gentlemen. Where can I purchase one of those Titleist mini bags that you are using as a ball bag?
Mark and Dan, since I see you manipulating iron heads without shaft and grip, wouldn't be great to have a data base on the heads weight of each clubs series since this type of data is very important to set the swing weight of a full club and that this type of data cannot be found anywhere ? Thanks, Stephane
yes, Titleist AP1 4-6, AP3, 7-P
Great info once again.
Mizuno JPX 900 hot metal 4 to 6 iron and then 900 forged from 7 to PW at one degree stronger. 👍🏻
Great video, blown my mind
No, not blended, I have a set of titleist CB 620, 4 to pw, I'm really happy with looks and feel, one day I might be good enough, to move up to MB, dream on lol
Hey
Why would you not put a u500 4 iron in your blend?
Grtz
Fantastic video 👍
Yes..T300 4 iron..t200 5,6,7 with the 7 iron 1' weak..8,9,pw t100s...
How would you blend ping
No blend. 4-pw Mizuno MP5’s. would definitely look to blend a new set if it was possible to actually try clubs other than a 7 iron 😒
Love my srixion irons they have a good range of game improvement, cavity back and blade, great brand for blending
No I still game RSI 1s maybe I need to think about new irons
Is it still considered blending if you only have a single iron in another model? Isn't the typical use of hybrids instead of long irons blending? What about wedges, same thing?
Yeah all good
