The first episode was amazing. The show is giving me Legion vibes in the sense that it's so different from anything else on tv

Oh, certainly. Hannibal, Legion, and now American Gods... too much splendor to handle.

Waited years for this and was not disappointed. I requested my SO and cat let me have 66 uninterrupted minutes, closed FB and turned my phone volume down. Just enough herb to open my mind and enhance my attention to detail. Next I will re watch with SO and answer his questions, explain the references and the origins of the gods to him. He asks so many questions which I love and my plan a good one. Also did this with Handmaids Tale.

Good review, ordered the book after watching.
Liked how the beat up scene on the graveyard looked like the beating of the old bum in clockwork orange.
But by Odin! Met is never ever a clear liquid and never ever served in snaps glasses!
You can get it black by adding a little wild plum, you can make it let you go berserk by adding oaks bark, you can even mix it with some hard alc without totally ruining it but no way getting it this clear!

    I just watched the episode
    Loved it
Even the almost forced reference at the end
It has the aesthetics and the weirdness that only the duo Fuller/Slade can provide (That sexy time scene is gorgeous and disturbing at the same time so is the first scene)
Just as a remark How good is Ian McShane? Also Ricky Wittle is a beast and Pablo Schreiber's accent is a little weird (or I am not used to thicker Irish accents)

Well, it was interesting, not exactly how I would have done it, but it was well done and faithful for the most part so nothing to complain about. I'll say it's very good and look forward to watching. ***possible spoilers below***
I guess I'll say things I would have done different. Not sure I would have so surreal like all the time, I would have kept things more real and played it straight until certain moments (you know the moments I'm talking about) where it switches to surreal. Also, I would slow down the pace and try and let the audience get a better feel for Shadow and feel more like a fish out of water, they pace they are going is a bit Edgar Wrightish, who is awesome, but not what I would use here, but well see maybe it will work better. Just what I would do different, but I like what they did here.
I definitely agree with you about thinking Ian McShane would have a beard (he had one on GoT), he should have had a beard, but eh minor. Yeah, I don't know about that added dialog about Newton in that convo, as someone who is very familiar with Newton physics, there is nothing crazy about, no that crazy comes later in quantum mechanics, again super minor. Yeah, that
Bilquis , was wondering how they would do that because I remember reading that and thinking "did that just happen", and then I see it here and it's like "yup, it happened".
While I prefer how these scenes played out in the book better, I liked seeing a different take here especially since they kept the spirit of each of them to a 100% faithful score to the source. Looking forward to what they do differently going forward.

IT WAS THE BEST SCENE!!! i also imaged it different only in that she is larger and also i could be remembering this wrong but i thought he went in head first and they described how it felt so there was this celestrial madonna stuff going on in my mind lol. also like the scene at the bar but maybe its just me but there was some mad sexual tension between shadow and sweeney. the way they were all up on each other, the way they whispered, the things they said it was all tongue in cheek and full of double entendre

  • @Hengsha

I loved the first episode, I think the casting for Wednesday and Shadow is spot on from the book.

It's indeed a beautiful show, great premier. It also reminded me of Hannibal's aesthetics. Haven't read the books, but I'm glad they're being faithful to them. That's usually a good sign. That reverse birth was crazy!
I wonder if they're going to touch on Jesus or Allah. That might be a little controversial, but it would make sense. Presumably those Gods would be very powerful given the number of worshipers they have.
If you liked the actor that played Loki, you might like the series "Kingdom". He features prominently in that.

Ohhh yes. The similarities are uncanny. I'd kill to have Hannibal back on screen (I dunno what that says about me), but American Gods is already starting to feel like a spiritual successor of sorts. It helps that Fuller and Slade are involved. Not to mention Gilligan Anderson as Media! I believe that Jesus will be making an appearance in the show. There was a meeting between Shadow and Jesus that Neil Gaiman had excluded from the original novel. Last September I heard that Jeremy Davies was cast for the role as well! Based on the omitted Jesus chapter that was included in the 10th anniversary edition of AG, I'm pretty excited to meet him. He seems like a neat guy. ;)

Allah will NOT appear at all, neither will Mohammad. A lot of Muslims and all the Regressive Left will be outraged and fanatical about religious offense, and both will support violence so showrunners will not touch that with a 2000 metre pole.

I hope non-book readers will give it a chance to develop. Being a lover of the book I know what is going on, but I can see how a virgin might not. I know Bryan Fuller has won accolades for Hannibal but that's it, certainly didn't do much for Voyager. So I think the 1st could've been done better but I have hope that the minimal 8 episodes will develop coherently.

This is possibly my favorite book of all time and tbh I was floored and I'm pretty ok with any changes. I do wish however the Technical Boy was not as flashy and more geeky, overweight etc.. like he is in the book because it isn't really showing how he kinda comes off as weaselly and pathetic to the other gods but they did capture his obnoxiousness. Seems like they are making him a little more powerful but then again AG was written 16 years ago and technology has gotten stronger I suppose.. I was impressed with Ricky Whittle as Shadow mostly because from the trailers etc.. he isn't really how I saw him. In my head Shadow has always been a racially ambiguous Tom Hardy. Changes to Mad Sweeney I loved and Pablo killed it, I always loved him as Nick Sobotka in The Wire. Can't wait for Sundays finally something good to watch.

I'm definitely curious as to what their endgame for the series will look like. I really dug the way the plot developed in Gaiman's novel, overall. What's great is that within the context of the show, they'll have a lot more time to spend with characters who popped up just briefly in the book but can now take on lives of their own. Could make the story even more impactful. ^__^ I'm excited!

I thought that the casting was spot on and all the major events were in place, but the show misses a lot of the thoughtfulness that the book has. I was expecting wittier dialogue and a slower built up, more along the lines of Penny Dreadful. I thought that all the blood bath with the vikings was drawn out and focused too much on the visual impact rather than the symbolism of bringing new gods to the country. The vikings hanging the Indian and then the two ravens on his shoulder was a much more subtle way of going about it, and the 3D-style blood splashes were missing the meandering way the book was written, which I found to be a lot more effective. Also, I wish Audrey would have just spit on Laura's corpse (like in the book) rather than having her try to suck Shadow off on her grave. When she goes off about pissing on her husbands grave and how she wants to do it 'where they can see us' was tacky. Too blunt. What I like about Gaiman's style is that he points out small things that eventually add up to big punches, but you can't always see where he's going. The bones of the story are there, and again the casting so far has been excellent, but I think the writers of the script completely missed the overall ambience of the book. Hopefully that gets better throughout the show!

I hated that damn book. I mean I saw the potential in it and it seemed like it was leading someplace, but it was sooooo slooooooow. What's great about the show is that its going to distill things down to the good parts. Very good first episode!

A show about mythological entities walking around in the real world and we encounter a character named "Low Key" -- pronounced "LOKI" -- and you say he MIGHT be a major player in the future? Come on now...
Its doubly obvious to those of us who know that "Lie-Smith" was one of the nicknames of that particular Norse deity.

I found the hanging scene quite racially charged, does Shadow Moon's mixed race heritage play into the story at large (I haven't read the book). It might be a bit reductionist to just bring up race because a "black" man is being hanged - but the imagery was especially haunting because of the connotations that historical precedence provides us. Basically asking if you think that this is something they have intentioned - or if I'm reading something into that isn't there and am being a tad problematic in my reading doing so?

was talking to a friend the other day and apparently in the book the hanging is supposed to evoke more nordic stuff than "lynch" stuff... hmm it will interesting to see how they handle it - but yeah it felt a bit yuck eh

    • @CrisSelene
      @CrisSelene 7 лет назад +1

don't be me the hanging is related to the world tree (yggdrasil). You can find more about it by researching the myth of how Odin discovered the runes.

    • @cmarkn
      @cmarkn 7 лет назад

In the book, Shadow Moon does not consider himself a black man, although he isn't really certain if he has any African blood or not.
I thought this small change in the man changed the flavor of the lynching scene significantly.
