  • How to identify this common weed which is a close relative of dandelion and has very similar nutritional and medicinal properties. Also a great simple recipe for enjoying this delicious plant!
CORRECTION: The botanical name is HYPOchaeris radicata, not HYDROchaeris.

Guys this herb is very powerful herb for kidneys, liver, great diuretic, stops any kind of internal bleeding and also lifting the internal organs, and straightening the cervix.
In Europe, Russia and far Eastern countries this herb is used as fresh or dry whole herb. To make the healing tea just pour fresh boiling water over 1tsp of dry, or 1tbs of fresh finely chopped whole herb.
This herb is considered as. priceless in the abovementioned countries.

Here in Italy I collect cats ears (flatweed) known as piattello here, and usually Blanche and then sauté them with other wild greens like dandelion, sow thistle, bristly oxtongue, chicory, etc, with a bit of minced garlic, a filet or two of anchovy, and some hot chili and have it as a side dish (contorno) called ripassata (because it is cooked in two stages). If you want to get fancy you can use this mixture as a stuffing in a roll of puff pastry or thinly rolled pizza dough and make a fallone.

I read that Hypochaeris radicata has branched, or forked, *solid* stalks, but today I checked one that looked exactly like what you show here, and it had *hollow* stalks.

      Hallow stalk is dandelion

@@pioneerhomefarms Today I came across several *false dandelions* under a tree. They have long, branched and green stalks. I broke one piece of a stalk and looked at it carefully, and found that it is hollow, except that the diameter of the inner hollow tube is small but it is visibly and clearly there.

I don't understand. I cooked a large serving of cat's ear, thinking it was dandelion one day, and it acted as a strong laxative and giving me terrible stomach cramps. Why?

Re-watch the video . . . esp. the part (starting at 2:39) showing it in the kitchen after she took the leaves off, separated the flower stems from the roots, etc. . . . This shows that she either pulled them out or dug them up. (Only digging would ensure that she got the roots, so that's What I suspect she did.) WHEN to dig them up is a question I don't recall her answering, though. I'll have to re-listen myself to see if I can find what I don't recall. lol
