    While most melee weapons use Strength, the ones with the Finesse property can be used with a character's Strength or Dexterity, whichever is higher. Just a quick little tidbit for the newbies in the comments

    Remember: If you would like a change, ask your DM!
    I played a Kobold Fighter and wanted to use a heavy weapon (the greatsword, for that sweet 2d6), which would give me, as a small creature, a big disadvantage. So i asked my DM if i could use a kobold-sized heavy weapon, since it would be logical that different races have weapons/armor in thier size and would make them in thier size.
    He agreed but added the rule that i can only use heavy weapons that are designed for my size/aka made by small races/made for small races, since i could in no way use a greatsword made for a human, for example.
    Magical Weapons would grow/shrink depending on the owners size as well, because magic you know?

      possible, though the non-humans might need to go in disguise. NPCs have told the party that, basically, the closer you get to the front lines of the war in the east, the more biased or fearful people (especially soldiers) are towards orcs, goblins, drow, etc. the idea being that the only Xhorhasian or otherwise foreign people they generally see, are at war, always trying to kill/deceive/sabotage them. Final say belongs to the DM of the game you're playing. (Which could be you! You can do it! We all have faith in you!) A rapier and a dagger combination is technically not allowed by the rules, but that combo does the same damage as two scimitars or shortswords so it's not game breaking to allow it. But you can always go with the Dual Wielder feat and use any two one handed melee weapons you wish to!

    IRL longswords weighed about the same as their one handed cousins. Five to six pounds. Most of them came into use from 1350 to 1550. Strangely enough you actually have more reach with a one handed sword as you can extend one arm further out than two. But a longsword is better for half swording, which means grabbing the blade halfway down and jabbing at your opponent with the point. You cant cut through plate but you can use that trick to stab joints and eye slits. And using half swording as a lever during grapples is easier. We also have more surviving records of how longswords were used. And the replication and revival of those lost martial arts has gained a lot of momentum thanks to HEMA and ARMA, interdicapline bickering aside.

    Great fun episode Bryan & crew! After that, I'd say the melee noises had more purpose than comedy. Anyone trained to use melee weapons who then tries to pretend they are having some crisis of conscience or morals when they use one is a lying hypocrite and/or hopelessly ignorant of the process. All melee combat characters need to have done away with that basic potential hurdle in their backstory as an apprentice or student, or they would-not could-not can-not be "proficient" in the first place. Let this guide your character building.
    The shortest summary of melee training is that quote from Morphius in The Matrix: "Stop 'trying' to hit me, and hit me!" You get nowhere until you get past that. Archers can shoot at little rings on hay bales and then be surprised they are good at shooting living things too, at least the first time. However, even with safety protocols, melee people have to learn "in the trenches" to start with, and they will give and take actual blows during sparring. There is no illusion to hide behind, and a moment's hesitation means you lose.

    If you want to dual wield a small ranged weapon and a single melee weapon, be sure to pick up the crossbow expert feat which allows you to use a hand crossbow as a bonus action attack, also keep in mind to use a finesse weapon if you also have a ranged weapon... finesse weapons allow you to use STR or DEX so they work well with ranged fighters since ranged weapons use dex unless they are thrown... now get your rapier, get your hand crossbow and beg your dm to call it a pistol and get to killing players!!! ;)

    • @Rathkryn
      @Rathkryn 5 лет назад

      Unless the hand crossbow has the capability to load itself (either via magic or technology) you still have to have a hand free to reload it. The Crossbow Expert feat just allows you to attack more than once per round with the crossbow. Useful for anybody with more than one attack per round. It also removes the penalty for using *any* ranged attack in melee range, including all bows and ranged attack spells.

    • @thepurehealer1279
      @thepurehealer1279 5 лет назад

      @@Rathkryn I have found no such ruling that dictates you need two hands to reload a hand crossbow, first it is a one handed weapon meaning it in all ways should be considered as such in how it functions same with the sling weapon, furthermore it also is a crossbow that fits in your hand... it would not be dumb to assume that you can simply hold the bolt between to fingers as that would functionally work in the reloading process of that weapon... I argue that in both a ruling and logistics standpoint a hand crossbow should be reloaded with only one free hand, furthermore it is a one handed bonus attack weapon with said feat, it would make no sense to remove the loading feature and give the crossbow user a bonus attack with a one handed weapon if loading with one hand was functionally impossible, the process of loading merely says that you must only attack once, not that you much have both hands free, keep in mind the sling is also a one handed ranged weapon and it requires no such multi handed maneuver nor does the hand crossbow say it needs such a maneuver... with all of these ideas in play I think it is more than fair to say that the hand crossbow warrior should be able to use a melee weapon and ranged weapon without suffering weird penalties, especially after they must pick a rather pricey feat to use such a weapon

    • @thepurehealer1279
      @thepurehealer1279 5 лет назад

      @@Rathkryn no ranged weapon I know is considered small, so you cant functionally dual wield otherwise with a ranged weapon, even feats that allow for such wielding determine them as "melee weapons" this is really the only way one can dual wield a ranged and melee weapon

    • @thepurehealer1279
      @thepurehealer1279 5 лет назад

      @@Rathkryn also keep in mind that if that were true not only do they ignore said loading, but they also can simply use a one handed weapon attack to use their bonus action... they could just put their sword away and shoot twice as a free action and pull it out next turn, constantly switching between a sword and crossbow and just a crossbow and that's just... dumb

      No, all attacks in a attack action is performed with the same weapon.
      If you're a fighter you can kinda do this by using ya action surge feature and declare that the new attack action is performed with the other weapon but frankly that's kinda a wasteful approach, much better to set up proper dual wielding or just action surge with a two handed weapon.

  • @RoronoaZoroSensei
    @RoronoaZoroSensei 5 лет назад

    Dual Wielding only gives you one attack with the second weapon right?
    even a fighter level 20 with 4 attacks only gets one additional attack that way?

    • @ak318
      @ak318 5 лет назад

      correct extra attacks only apply to the Attack action, where as dual weapon fighting is a bonus action to attack with the off hand weapon.

    • @thanatos5150
      @thanatos5150 5 лет назад

      Correct. The "Extra" attack eats your bonus action. The Fighter's Extra Attack Feature (And the Barbarian's... and the Monk's... and the Ranger's...) only applys when using your Action to take the Attack action. Bonus actions are not affected.
      This is why a Monk still needs to spend a ki point to Flurry of Blows in order to attack four times in a round.

      Right. Spear and shield dominated troop loadouts for centuries.

    It seems strange that the heavy property relates to size, not strength. I don't see why a halfling or gnome with 20 strength cannot effectively swing around a weapon twice their size...
