So glad I stumbled on this video. How would you suggest curing the ink at home without an industrial dryer?
Two questions. If I am printing with water base on unfinished wood, can I then clear coat the wood with urethane without the print blurring or running? On the other hand, if I were to print on finished wood with solvent based ink, would it need to be cured with heat and if I then added a coat of clear urethane over that, sprayed on, like the kind they spray cars with, would the print smear or run during the clear coat phase? thank you.

Hi! It would need to be heat over time, which would allow the wood to dry out. The drying out is what will cause the wood to warp.

you can print one color at a time either wet on wet or letting drying in between
What emulsion do you recommend to use with this ink? Would Chromablue Photopolymer be okay? Thats what I use for plastisol ink
I believe Chromablue is mainly for plastisol inks. I suggest using an ink that is water resistant. We normally use the WBP or Cryocoat(photopolymer).
Can screen printing be done on a textured laminate surface? If so, can it be a two color process? Thank you.
Hey Ryonet, I am an Artist that screen prints on wood and stretched canvas. I have a diy set up now and use only one color process. I am looking to get your Riley Hopkins Jr 4 color process to add to my business. I'm wondering how/if I can adjust the screen so that I can place a piece of wood on the platen. I would need 1/2" to 1 3/4" clearance. What would you suggest?? TIA
Great question! The maximum off contact a stock Riley Hopkins can achieve is 1/2"-3/4". Anything after a half inch is pushing it. You can custom make a thinner platen or don't use a platen at all to give you another inch or so though :)

Water based works great on untreated wood! :)
Could I go about drying this with my heat gun since I do not have a conveyor dryer or will that scorch the wood?
+Milena Enguidanos Yes, you could use a heat gun. There is no prescribed method for this, however you'll definitely want to hold the heat gun at more of a distance and move it closer as needed. Test the ink by touching it to see if it's fully cured. Another option, is to use Warp Drive low cure additive. With this, you could even let the ink air-dry over time and cure without the use of heat.

Hi.I need to print on untreated pine.250 little cheese boards.letters is 1/4 inch heigh(not sure on this,we use cm)Any advice?boards sticked to screen on previous prints I tried.Ink too thick?
This sounds like a cool project! You'll want enough off contact that your screen doesn't stick to the wood and have a light adhesive down under the board so it sticks to your table. You might have to create a different jig to achieve the perfect off contact. I would think a 230mesh (or higher) screen with waterbase ink will get you the results you're looking for!
You stated in the video that you would recommend a solvent based ink for screening on painted wood....we will be screening both barn wood as in your rustic piece as well as painted wood. Which ink do you recommend for the painted wood and would it work for the untreated as well?
+Tim Tinsley Great question Tim! You're spot on. Solvent ink would work both for treated and untreated, no worries. If you wanted to try different styles on the untreated wood, water based ink works great and penetrates the material more, giving a bit more worn/natural look.
After printing and curing would the block of wood be water proof? Im wanting to make chopping boards but need to have them food safe and not wash away.
Most cutting boards have a lacquer coating that protects the wood from water damage. I believe this would also protect your print. Thanks for watching!
Hello, I was wondering if there is a type of ink that simulates actual Wood Stain? Looking for the effect that you get with wood stain, but easier cleanup than stain.

You will want to go with water based ink if the wood is natural and untreated. Otherwise solvent ink can be used on treated woods. Solvent inks can be found through places like nazdar.com and our Green Galaxy water based works great on wood! Check it out :)

Hi Declan,
There are a few different inks you can use when printing on wood. There are more caustic inks that are specific for use on wood, but if the wood is uncoated and is just raw wood.. I would suggest using a water based ink. Water based inks will dry on their own without the use of heat when left in room temp.

What’s you think about Riso Goccopro Computer To Screen Technology?
what durometer would you recommend for the higher detailed print ? which did you use on the second image ?
+JUNK PHOTO in this video he uses an 80 durometer which is harder and sheers the ink off better as opposed to pushing the ink through more. Harder durometers are better for high detail and thinner inks - soft squeegees (60 duro) are better for super thick inks/lower detail. Still, you can rarely go wrong with 70 durometer, they really are applicable across all mediums. IF you want to get super nerdy and creative with your printing though, have fun with durometers! :)
What are the off contact pieces? Just wood?
I'm using my screen print as a background for a painting, so I had to gesso it. Should I still use the water base, or something else? I'll be using black, and I'm printing on one of those birch 'nested' panels (looks like a really shallow box, same dimensions as a canvas).
As long as the ink is still able to soak into the substrate, you will be fine with using water-based inks. If not, then I would consider using air curing inks.

Any ideas on ways to create off contact using a press for multi-color prints? I've got a Riley Hopkins 4x4 and want to print on some wood that is about 1/2". I'm thinking of rigging up some sort of thinner platen and adjust off contact to that. What do you think?
***** What I have done in the past is used double sided tape and put the wood directly on the pallet, I have also used a thinner board. Hope this helps
Ryonet Thanks for your reply. The wood I want to print on is actually closer to 3/4", so I'm gonna need to find some more space. I was just thinking maybe I could shim up the screen in the screen clamp to raise it off of the platen. I'm using your oversized screens, so there isn't much room to raise it, but that could give me a little more room.
I was curious as to where you got the rough wood from. I am doing a project for school and would like to use rough wood, just not sure where to get it from.
Oh you can find it all over! Check at local wood shops, lumber stores, even the dump! :)

After you screen print on wood, can you put lacquer on it?
As long as the ink you're using doesn't interfere with the adhesion. Reach out to the lacquer company what it will and will not bond.

Could you use plastisol for wood printing?
The 1 Oz. Jig Band You can but it will leave a oily ring and raise above the wood, better with water base

I've been trying to print text on painted wood. I keep getting the impressions of the mesh in the ink and have to press really hard to get coverage in all the text and it's sloppy looking. I've tried using a 110 and 160 mesh screen but same problem. Water based ink. Any advice??
I have the same issue. No answer here so I will keep moving on to other videos. I’ll come back and let you know if I find anything out.

@@Theelitebeautylounge No, unfortunately I couldn’t get a consistent result. Nothing seemed to work and I kept using/wasting more product so I’ve been doing it with stencils. I would still really like to get it figured out though! Good luck!!
