The whole interaction he has in that moment really give me pain in knowing that his humanity is so detached that when it is shown it’s like a cold reminder of the world he was born in.
I think the little moments like this where Homelander comes through for Ryan, is when he’s able to relate to him. He was once a scared little kid surrounded by people too (since he was a lab baby), but when it comes to things that Homelander can’t immediately relate to, his narcissism makes him think “well, that’s something we’re gonna have to fix”, like when he pushed Ryan off the roof to try and bring out his powers.

I like how it shows the good side of even the most terrible people on the show. Homelander genuinely wants to be a part of his sons life. And you can tell Stormfront wants to be a mother again and care for Homelanders kid. A-train is obviously going through a crisis and you feel bad for him as well. Despite all these characters have done horrendous things, they still show a soft side that makes them hard to fully hate lol. Stormfront is a NAZI, and I still find it hard to hate her character, shes such a great villain!
I can agree with the Homelander sentiment, but Stormfront wanted Ryan first and foremost for her Nazi ideals. All she does is put down Becca, and try to mold Ryan like a puppet. Homelander definitely puts down Becca, but he does occasionally say nice things about her to Becca. He wants his son to be a super, but I that's more so he and Ryan have something to bond over.
Yep the show is about moral greys Not supposed to be black and white (although there are some characters who obviously are very light grey or very dark grey)
This scene is so sad, especially after Season 4, Homelander, I feel, really did try to be a good father, but, fact is, he clearly also just sees Ryan as an extension to himself. The trauma he endured left him too broken to be able to act like a normal father, and left him a screaming man child trapped in a adult body.
It's significant that the only time Homelander acts like a genuine parent is when Ryan's powers are acting up. It's the only thing Homelander has any empathy for Ryan about, because Homelander himself likely went through something similar. In that moment, he looked at Ryan and saw his younger self, and he's such a narcissist that the only person he can show compassion to is himself.
i love how he didn’t do typical homelander things where he tried to calm him down and actually took him to becka, he actually tries to be a father to him which makes me smile (while he’s a kid)
Homelander's son is such a well mannered boy. It's hard to beleive he is his father's son. It's a shame a child like this can't have an innocent childhood either.
This is true character development. It can be difficult to give such an evil character as Homelander traits and actions that we empathize with, but here he's shown being a good dad who really cares about his son. Just makes me love this series more
Little scenes like this that show how good Homelander could have been under different circumstances. It doesn’t excuse the horrible things he does, it just makes it all the sadder.
he's BEEN in Ryan's place. He knows what being alone can do to you. He physically can't force any of this on Ryan because all of his upbringing was essentially against his will and he doesn't want that for his son. I love the inner conflict and the self preservation/trauma reflex took over his parental instinct
This is one of my favorite scenes in the entire show. Homelander is a monster. No way around that. However, its clear he wants to be a father. He wants to give Ryan what he never had. Theres no way around this. He doesn't know how to do that though, but you can clearly see he is trying. It shows how even a monster can have even a little tiny piece of good in them. However, after Ryan chooses to go with Butcher, that was the moment every little bit of hope Homelander had about being a father and have something nice, was ripped away from him, and then we get the Homelander in season 3 that just doesn't care anymore.
I really feel like Ryan is the only person keeping Homelander from going completely insane. If something happens and Ryan is killed, Homelander will destroy the world as he destroys himself.
This was a pretty neat way to show that yes even narcissists like Homelander are capable of some empathy. Well their self preservation tends to always come first. But they have moments.
I love that despite all the despicable actions Homelander has done in the series, he’s genuinely trying his best to a good father for Ryan in this clip. He tries to take him out eat a restaurant but when he sees his son isn’t feeling well because of the crowd and his heightened hearing, he escorts Ryan out cause he knows how overwhelming it is at that age putting Ryan’s safety and well being above his own time in the spotlight which we know he absolutely loves. Arguably Ryan did help bring out the best in Homelander
Oh my god, is Homelander being a good role model for his son, this actually makes me like Homelander a little bit, he seems so kind around his son even though we all know what he does when his son isn’t around
The scene with Ryan and his reaction to the crowd and its noise just shows that even Homelander can have some humanity left in there deep within such a dark tragic soul.. and ofc that scene with Doppleganger and Homelanders *gasp* when he starts to change from Stilwell is so perfect and hilariously relatable on a humanely primitive level lol
I mean ok sure, every serial killer can be just as loving but it doesn't make him a good person, he's still a psychopath incarnate. The only problem is it isn't all homelander's fault. He was raised by people who only cared about what he could do for them. In an absolute loveless environment, where he's never had hardships that life brings. Most likely he did get every single thing he wanted without discipline. He was brought up to be exactly this person, so I don't blame him too much. But even with all that it seems in his own twisted way he actually cares for his son.
I don't know if this was there intention but as a sufferer of autism this legit felt like a perfect depiction of both sensory overload and autistic meltdown
Feel like this is the only scene in the whole of the boys where we see Homelander acting like a normal, balanced, caring human being thinking of someone else instead of himself
It's so odd. Homelander is trying to convert to his way of things, yet Ryan changes something in Homelander, brings out whatever good is/was left in him. He genuinely cares that Ryan was panicking, and got him out of that situation. Homelander is irredeemable, without a doubt. But it's like when it comes to Ryan, we can see a phantom of the hero/person Homelander could have been. It doesn't excuse a single thing he has done, but let's remember: Homelander wasn't born, he was created, by Vought.
It’s sad because if Homelander grew up with a real family that taught him right from wrong he’d be a real hero like Alex. You can see here he puts away his childish need to be adored to help Ryan, he asked if he was ok. He understood how he was feeling, he truly dose care for Ryan and no one else
You know, that's one of the things I find really interesting about sociopaths, when compared to psychopaths. Although the two should be incapable of feeling empathy, in some situations sociopaths can feel something close to empathy for someone and even feel bad about hurting or doing some kind of harm to them. The series managed to represent that in Homelander in a very good and coherent way with Ryan. You can clearly see, as the narrative progresses and how it's built, that Homelander eventually starts to really seem to care about Ryan and his well being in some moments, despite being a narcissistic sociopath (That happens because of some things the narrative has built into his character, but the most important ones in my opinion would be: Homelander's desperation for love and connections with people + the fact that he see himself and part of his own pain in Ryan).
Homelander's reaction to Ryan to the crowd shows he knows how overwhelming the powers can be, so he behaves like a understanding father figure for the first time since meeting Ryan and gets him out of there as fast as possible. It doesn't make up for all he's done, but I think it's a glimpse to what Homelander could've been if he was raised like a child and not a science experiment

At 2:33 in the video I like how Homelander has this switch in his face when he sees Ryan. It’s so natural looking and his eyes convey a deep story of pain and empathy.
Or when Ryan feels bad for killing that guy in the new season homelander gets mad as he can’t relate to empathy

Homelander should've just told them he was busy.
he loves their attention. something he never got when he was a child. so the only love he really feels is that from his fans.

Homelander atleast went off when Ryan was feeling bad
I like how it shows the good side of even the most terrible people on the show. Homelander genuinely wants to be a part of his sons life. And you can tell Stormfront wants to be a mother again and care for Homelanders kid. A-train is obviously going through a crisis and you feel bad for him as well. Despite all these characters have done horrendous things, they still show a soft side that makes them hard to fully hate lol. Stormfront is a NAZI, and I still find it hard to hate her character, shes such a great villain!
Almost reminds me of _Oz_ .
Yep the show is about moral greys
Not supposed to be black and white (although there are some characters who obviously are very light grey or very dark grey)

Untrue. There are very much genuine evil ones (like Stormfront and Homelander), they're just given depth.
almost like theyr real people
This scene is so sad, especially after Season 4, Homelander, I feel, really did try to be a good father, but, fact is, he clearly also just sees Ryan as an extension to himself.
The brief moments where Homelander is shown to genuinely care for Ryan makes him SO much scarier than if we was just a regular psychopath tbh
No one seems to be mentioning how gentle Homelander took off. Normally he takes off violently regardless if hes in the public or not.
Probably because he had Ryan with him
I love how Homelander chooses his son over his fans. It's a great dad moment.
Homelander's son is such a well mannered boy. It's hard to beleive he is his father's son. It's a shame a child like this can't have an innocent childhood either.
he's my favorite character on the show
This is true character development.
Wow i forgot about this scene, this is the most human Homelander has ever been and i can’t imagine him doing this in season 4
Even though Stormfront is Stormfront, seeing her be gentle with Ryan and want to be his mom is actually kinda sweet.
She is likable in some regards. I think that makes her more realistic.
Well she actually has experience as a Mother so it makes sense
This scene proves that Homelander does care about his son as he escorted him out of the restaurant after nearly suffering a nervous breakdown.
He stole our hearts in this one
One of the very few good things homelander has done, he may not care about much but he does really care about Ryan
he's BEEN in Ryan's place. He knows what being alone can do to you. He physically can't force any of this on Ryan because all of his upbringing was essentially against his will and he doesn't want that for his son. I love the inner conflict and the self preservation/trauma reflex took over his parental instinct
No matter how evil you are, a man will always love his son.
Unless you're Soldier Boy
I think Homelander genuinely loves his son though like the guys a monster but he still does have humanity in him
For the jerk homelander is atleast he is serious about caring and protecting his son
It's not Ryan's fault that he was raised with just his mom, anyone raised alone would be having a sensory overload
This was a pretty neat way to show that yes even narcissists like Homelander are capable of some empathy. Well their self preservation tends to always come first. But they have moments.
This is like the only normal scene in the entire show
I love that despite all the despicable actions Homelander has done in the series, he’s genuinely trying his best to a good father for Ryan in this clip.
Who else really wanted homelander to be a cool dad?
Sometimes i can't process how much this boy grew up from Season 2 to Season 4
when i read the title i thought he took a kid to another planet named vought
i cant be the only one that wants a spin off of homelander and stormfront raising Ryan, but its just wholesome family stuff and not lasering ppl.

It's like the one scene in the entire show where he actually almost acts like a normal person
This is like the one time where Homelander actually acted like a nice person
I always come back to this scene. It’s the one sliver of humanity we see from him.

I like that homelander is trying to be a dad. Yes he doesn’t know how but he’s trying
0:24 so in season 4 Ryan plays Vought tournaments of heroes
This scene with Ryan put me on edge thinking, he might accidentally use his powers
This is so weird. Homelander is actually being a dad in this scene. His only concern is his kid.

At least he was considerate enough to realize that ryan was panicking and got him outta there.

Scenes like this makes me wonder if there could ever be any form of redemption for Homelander.....
This scene really made me like Homelander
He is a better dad than so many other dad's
almost makes him redeemable...almost
Before I even knew what the boys is even about, I think I thought it was about a bunch of friends hanging out
Feel like this is the only scene in the whole of the boys where we see Homelander acting like a normal, balanced, caring human being thinking of someone else instead of himself
It doesn't excuse a single thing he has done, but let's remember:
Homelander wasn't born, he was created, by Vought.
There’s so much to unpack in this scene. Homelander is an endlessly interesting dude.
Homelander: Back the f*ck off or I'll laser you goddamnit!
Homelander w/ Ryan: Stay back please, thank you.
"Ask the boss" ok that was cute 😭
It’s sad because if Homelander grew up with a real family that taught him right from wrong he’d be a real hero like Alex. You can see here he puts away his childish need to be adored to help Ryan, he asked if he was ok. He understood how he was feeling, he truly dose care for Ryan and no one else
homelander has the potential to be a really good person and its just so sad when we see the possibilites compared to the reality of how he is
I was worried Ryan would accidentally use his laser eyes here.
i like this side of him, you can see how he is understanding and stuff twords his kid
Plus he doesn't want his son to be raised the same way he was
Well yes he sees Ryan as an extension of himself
I unironically want him to drop the hero shtick to try and be a good dad
People who didnt watch the whole show:its a wholesome superhero family
Its really hilarious how Homelander and Stormfront just casually walks into the restaurant instead of some cheesy comic book entrance
