    Not a single wasted note was ever played when George played slide guitar. He crafts such memorable lines that are lyrical and musical, not to mention having timing, tone and touch in spades. All this and a superb song writer, a gentleman by everyone's account plus a Beatle. We need your spirit, wisdom and music more than ever in this crazy world. You are forever missed.

      EXACTLY the same thing happened with me. Total shocker. Normally, got up and booked out as the credits rolled, but then this unkonwn song came on with the haunting slide guitar and I stuck around long enough to hear a voice that was unmistakably George. I remember turning to a friend who was there with me and saying "I think this is George Harrison." He shrugged his shoulders becasue that didn't mean anything to him. But to me, it was just pure gold. Stayed til the end of the song and didn't want the song to stop. Went out and searched for it, but the only thing I could find at Tower Records was the incredibly horrible soundtrack to the film which had an utterly forgettable Clapton cover of Knockin' on Heavens Door and an embarassing Beach Boys song that was all Mike and zero Brian (never a good thing). I remember liking the film at the time. . .then I happened upon it about 15 years later on TV and found it almost completely unwatchable. The song was released years later on a "Best of GH Vol 2" collection. Cheer Down is still my fav post-ATMP song by George [and there are a LOT of good songs he wrote after 1970]. In my opinion, this counts as the BEST solo-Beatle recording that almost nobody ever heard of. At least that's the impression I have when I speak with most people who are familiar with the Beatles. They all know Imagine, My Sweet Lord, Gimme Some Truth, Band on the Run, Handle With Care, Jet, It Don't Come Easy, etc. Most have never even heard of this song. . .which is strange as this has nearly 2.5 mil views. Maybe it's finally getting its moment in the sun?

      @@mickrabinhe-him-hispronoun6304 I've long said that "Hey Bulldog" is the best Beatles recording that almost nobody has heard of, and you make a good argument for "Cheer Down" on the solo front. Listening to it again right now.

    Of course we all know George Harrison as one of the most important and influential musicians and guitarists of the century, but along with his many prodigious talents was his brilliant and signature slide guitar playing, beautifully in evidence on the above referenced, My Sweet Lord. George had stated that he never really considered himself a great slide guitar player, but the truth is he put his own distinct stamp on slide guitar technique as effectively as few have.

    Amongst the many reason that I love and respect George Harrison, it was his wonderful skills on slide guitar that always captivated me. He plays these sublime melodic lines that cut to the point every single time with 0 notes wasted. Just magical.

    • @larrygeetar9309
      @larrygeetar9309 5 лет назад +10

      90% of his slide work was done in standard tuning, not blues style in open E, D, G, etc.
      He did play that style but mainly on recordings. It's a testament to his knowledge of
      the guitar fretboard. By playing in standard pitch, he played those beautiful melodies
      just as he would have if he were not playing with a slide. He knew the notes and had
      a wonderful sense of melody. George was rather underrated as a player, especially for
      slide guitar. His intonation was perfect, his notes were clear, and he understood that
      slide guitar is just that - sliding. Sounds silly but it's true. George and his instrument
      were one.

But when I hear music like this, that’s coupled with humor and music of serious emotional content, it tells me exactly where I am from. He never did riff slide work. He did complimentary and alternate melody... singing slide I'd call it. Kind of like Thelman played mouth organ. To that idea, George pretty much invented his own "George Harrison" sound with his slide playing... on top of all the other stuff he did so uniquely over the years. What a gift to us all. Lyrical and melodic slide playing. Never heard a slide sound like it until after he did it first. Just saying ;-)

      Nice call on the Toots comparison. Dead on. What's so compelling about George's slide playing (aside from the tone, emotion, economy, and command of Melody, rhythm, and intonation) is that he really developed his own vocabulary. He doesn't play blues-based slide like Duane or Gilmour, he doesn't play like Ry. He left the Beatles where I don't think he ever played slide and immediately put out ATMP where he establishes his new language and instantly created a wholly signature sound all his own. Such a great player and songwriter.

    George is so relaxed here. The performances on this tour showed just how great and natural he was. Considering he didn’t really like touring he was excellent when he chose to be. I think ultimately after the Beatles broke up he was a part time musician and he wrote and recorded when he felt like it. A fantastic talent and he will never be forgotten.
    Rest in peace George.

    Anyone that takes on playing slide guitar knows just how hard it can be and how easy it is to mess up. He isn't bottle necking open tuning, it's standard tuning. George's slide playing solos are always great, always memorable. He has a touch that would be difficult to replicate and if you didn't know the song, you could recognize George right away. I noticed that he finger picks the notes as opposed to using a pick, which adds to the originality of his slide work. I just love it.
