Don't come looking here for an insider's portrait of Hinduism; the religion on offer is like something out of the adventures of Indiana Jones, performed in the style of 'The King and I'. Nevertheless, this film offers a rare glimpse of religious ritual and architecture in India in the late 1930s.
The temples in question include those at Mysore, Varanasi and Belur and we also get to see a dancer performing Shiva's 'Dance of Destruction'. The film ends rather oddly with a moonlight trip to the Taj Mahal, the filmmaker appearing to forget that it was built by a Muslim emperor. But despite its limitations in objectivity and logic, Jack Cardiff's Technicolor cinematography lifts the film to a rather higher plane. (Robin Baker)

I am originally from Mysore, Karnataka. This is a very rare video of pre-independence era Mysore. Love it!
Wow. That dance sequence is magical. No wonder Jack Cardiff was a legendary cinematographer.
The narrator has got so many facts wrong. Yet its a great piece of history captured on film 👍
He deliberately said it wrong for their British propaganda against India and also for divide and rule policy.
Actually no.
It was a belief that u can't be converted into hinduism..u have to be born hindu
Plus white men or anyone except hindus were not allowed inside temples.
I am not saying everything he said must be right..it might be my ignorance as well.
But yes..u r right..these are some amazing pieces of our past
@@ms.dentist You're right. Those were facts. But depends on which region of India you live in.

He wasn't deliberately wrong. It was their understanding of that time
The British gave us our History back with their archeological works in the Indus Valley
@thezoldics7648
The British renovated all the temples left in ruins, dug out the Indus Valley Civilisation and created the first academic studies of Sanskrit texts
Fantastic film! The quality of the colour photography is amazing for the 30s. Can't believe that this was made at the same time as Gone With the Wind and Wizard of Oz. Thanx again bfifilms for sharing your great films.
I'm very impressed by the footage of the male Madame Menaka Ballet dancer starting around 6:48; beautiful!

This is amazing
Beautiful.
Sounds like the introduction of an Indiana Jones movie
Nice to watch and listen 👍🙏
Taj Mahal was built against the demolition of Tejo Mahalya a Shiva temple..
Hindus literally stopped building magnificent temples (worthy to stand the test of time) since centuries back... :-(
Coz medieval invasion
Ram mandir will be built
@goldenstate2002 when I said they built and Vijay nagar never ventured out of their state
They did built temples in Varanasi and in Somnath.
Loved it! Wonder what is inaccurate though as I do not know much of Hinduism.
Priests used to meditate or pray on the steps of Haleebedu temples that time. Whatever happened post Independence????
6:45 what dance form is this?
Why you put tajmahal on caption
@ 1:45 "prepare to meet Kali IN HELL !" sorry , somebody had to say it , and it damn sure wasn't gonna be Sabu !

Yes taj mahal is a hindu temple.

The narration is very derogatory and rid of ignorance.
The dancer is in the mood of Ardhnarishwar.
