  • Video of the final Wednesday "Evening Gun" program for the 2013 season. This was an extra special program where we did a "Battery Fire" firing all three of the park's 32 lb Seacoast Guns. Special thanks to the Ft. Macon Coast Guard personnel who volunteered their time and energy to form our summer cannon crews and make these programs possible. (I apologize for the poor audio quality of the video in advance.)

      I guess I'll give my age here. When I was a kid there was still all kinds of interesting things laying all over the place out there. After every good storm you could go walk around and find really interesting things.

    It’s really a shame. The wind is so bad there I can barely hear that gentleman talking explaining everything about the 32 pound cannons.

    I think the last time before this that there was an artillery battery firing on US soil was during the filming of Gettysburg in the early 1990s. They used all reenactors.

    would have been nice to have seen civil war reenactors manning the guns, watching people in polo shirts kinds throws a bucket of cold water on it

      They’re all too old at this point. At least the age of these people is somewhat close to the age of the actual fighters.

    Generally siege artillery but mounted here as seacoast defense guns.

    I am surprised as how the cannon is taken back on the rails for loading ,surely a block and tackle system would be quicker and more efficient.

    those seem like really light charges no? I'd imagine a real firing of those would send the guns moving back much further and probably fill the area with thick smoke.

    • @chrisbolland5634
      @chrisbolland5634 Год назад

      They are really weak charges. On board ship, the recoil would reset the guns into loading position, so imagine there rocketing back up the rails a good 8 or 10 feet.

    • @garyspoering2463
      @garyspoering2463 Год назад

      They are light charges, the spectators did not cover their ears. Also no wadding over the charge to make it burn faster.
      The muzzle blast from a normal charge and ball would drop the spectators, where the camera is, to their knees. Ispeak from experience being beside a 6 pounder with a 14 ounce black powder charge being fired at the Casper, Wy. cannon shoot some years ago.

      Do you really think those would take a 32lb ball and full charge of 1X powder right now. I'd say stand back way back. If I remember my teachings right that barrel and a good crew could throw a round every 3 minutes or faster. And then throw in somebody out there shooting back. Just to be safe I'd go back to the causeway.

      I would not use 1x powder, burns too fast. Use cannon powder instead, it has grain-of-wheat sized particles, much safer!

    *Zero pound guns, if you don't have a cannonball in it then it can't be an anything pounder, also the recoil is basically nothing and the loudness is even decreased because there's nothing to help build up the pressure.

      Before we started "rating" cannon by the Metric system (the German 88, or the French 75 for instance) Guns were described by the weight of the shot they were made to shoot. This started to change during our Civil War.
      I DO have to agree with you on the one point; even a 3-pound charge of powder would sound a WHOLE Lot Louder with some wadding in front of it, and Maybe there'd be a bit more recoil. I dislike tinfoil cartridges for guns in any case; they promote bad practices.

      The recoil, I believe, on a 32 pounder is about 12 feet when properly loaded. And by the way, the Heavy Artillery regiment at Ft. Macon during the Civil War was black. The 14th USCHA (United States Colored Heavy Artillery), which was formerly the 1st North Carolina Colored Artillery before receiving their federal designation. The commanding officer was Lt. Frank Welch, one of the surviving officers of the 54th Massachusetts after the Battle at Battery Wagner. My great grandfather served with the 14th.

      The aluminum foil is to prevent fires in the grass downrange. Three fires at Casper, Wy. in one day, even with the foil use!

    Great video. But I have to wonder- was it a full powder charge for the gun? Seems to me a 32 pounder would be somewhat louder.
