I thought it was a great game in the pouring rain and sodden ground. Great work from Kevin Roberts and great commentary. I thought they all put their hearts into it: Roach, Cleale, Dowling, Pearce and all the rest. Remember that back in those days there was no interchange. Once a player was replaced, he stayed replaced.
How funny is the shape of that football, and O’Connor trying to scrape a bit of mud together to stand that soccer ball upright for a kickoff. I remember the heavy leather balls before this time, and the modern dimpled synthetics this century, but i never played with a ball shaped like this. Really slippery difficult wet conditions for everyone except Johnny Ferguson who is running and stepping through traffic in this mud bath like it’s a dry weather pitch. Extraordinary. Everyone else is just struggling to hold the ball. I’m watching this in 2022 after being reminded that Steve Mortimer is given great credit for this first NSW series win. I’m watching his involvement with great interest. I don’t miss these contested scrums, they are a hilarious rabble.
Steve Mortimer has worked his butt off, particularly in defence… as have many others. Roach has given away stupid penalties and has also put in a huge effort, as has Pat Jarvis. They all have. But it’s a wet weather drop-a-thon. NSW has spent the entire second half having Garry Jack and Chris Mortimer kick the ball long from their own end early in the tackle count and giving Qld the opportunity to make a handling error trying to carry it back. Qld have obliged by repeatedly spilling the ball. NSW executed a wet weather game plan and Qld made so many handling errors they just couldn’t get into the game.
No fuss refereeing. Hard to find fault. A major difference to the rules is no benefit to the defending team if they catch a bomb in the in goal on the full - if they are tackled in goal it’s a goal line dropout… not a 25m tap restart with a 7 tackle set. That was a huge rule change.
I really like the relatively laid-back commentary (despite the presence of big D!). Much preferable to contemporary broadcasts with morons ranting and raving, over-analysing tiny incidents etc. Great to see the ever dependable Chris Mortimer in action.
Is that the laconic Jack Gibson providing the colour commentary? I miss him. I miss Warren Ryan’s insightful commentary on ABC. But they never had the endless replays in slow motion from 20 different angles to speak to. It is interesting how few stoppages there are compared to the modern game. We are not endlessly waiting for the bunker to adjudicate on whether two airborne players contesting a high ball constitutes a knock on
Ordinary effort from Wally, bad kicking game and taking dives whenever he did kick the ball away and was clattered. Probably won the man of the match tho, QLD journos were trolling NSW audiences even back in the 80's. How good is Chicka Ferguson ? Very good.
Thewayne Guyguy he played well, it was a bit of a late career flourish for Wynn if I remember correctly. Steve Mortimer was best for me, for a guy not knowing for his kicking he did well, and his cover defence was just unreal. Awful conditions that even the QLD balls couldnt compensate for, imagine using those steedens.

Some of the players now days would not survive this area
The days when the scrums meant something
Brett kenny should already be a immortal
Audio average due to broadcast.
