Very interesting. I just watched "My scientology movie" and Rathbun came across as a friggin` psycho and a liar. I`ve altso seen him in other scientology docus where, like you say,he`s the victim. He was a bully and a thug for 25 years and had no problems with that but when HE went to the hole he was gone in a few days. And when hs son was mentioned he flipped. Which is understandable, but as Louis pointed out this is what HE did to others. And he flipped out even more. Not a trustworthy character

Louis was just doing standard investigative journalism. I didn't feel like Louis was being antagonistic when he stated that Marty had done the same thing that the "Squirrel Busters" were doing. Louis was probably going to follow up with valid questions, like "through which venues do they go to accomplish these things". I think that Marty was dismissive and I found his candor to be erratic and peculiar. Marty's interactions were unlike any other that I have witnessed. I guess Scientology sucks the humanity out of these people because he lacks the empathetic capacity to understand how he's making people feel.

Just watched the film and I was shocked at Marty Rathbun's behavior at times during some scenes. He does come off a bit unstable and narcissistic several times. It was uncomfortable to watch at times and I honestly felt sorry for Louis and all the other actors having to work around Marty. I couldn't believe at the end where Marty said HE was pulling the plug on it like it was HIS damn film in the first place. What an ass.

way before i watched this video from you, i saw the documentary made by Louis. Throughout the whole documentary i had the feeling that Marty is hiding horrible things. Every time Louis was asking him a question from another angle, he was getting defensive and aggressive. When you have nothing to hide, you answer those questions with no problem. It's clearly that Marty doesn't really feels bad of his time in Scientology, is just mad that he was left out of it, and now he's in between attacking the cult and kissing their ass because there are too many skeletons in his closet. People should seriously asking themselves what Marty really did. Just because you call it a cult now, you are not free from all your criminal activity in it. Thank you for your video. It actually help to understand better what i already figured out. P.S . The really scary thing is that Marty knows soo much more about the cult, and he could give us a lot of information and accusations to the church, but because he is too scared to face the facts he done, he cooperates in silence with them and shuts up about the real big things. Shame on him.

I have mixed feelings posting because I was never part of Scientology and haven't seen this production. BUT - I don't see this as a stain on Marty Rathbun nor Steven Mango.
About 6 months ago, I had a dear friend finally leave scientology, having been a part of it for almost a decade. He left left quite troubled mentally. I loved him, but he lost his mind. He was cut off from his friends and family; I don't know what snapped him out of it, but he knew something was wrong.
I communicate with him about once or twice a month. And, occasionally I think he still sounds crazy. What I can say is - he's getting better and I expect it will take him many years to get normal.
I'll definitely be looking for this production and related materials Steve. Thanks

But who knows? I feel bad for Marty's wife Monique, she just wanted the Church to stop harassing them. God only knows what happened behind the scenes. Or, as has been stated above, maybe Scientology has something on Rathbun and that's the reason for the dropping of the lawsuit and for all of Rathbun's odd blog posts lately.

The proof is in the movie too. You can see him directing the set and it is made clear that he wrote the script and had total control over the finished scene. I can only assume he is so scared of what could happen to his son that he has acquiesced to Scientology's demands. It makes me wonder what he has seen them do to other people's kids. In all honesty I understand his behaviour here. A parent (a good one) will do whatever it takes to protect their child. As for his tantrums on set, I think the set up was so real for him that he naturally slipped back into his behaviour in Scientology. The way he berated Louis outside after the Scientologist's referred to his child as a foster child and implied he was in it for the money seemed to me to be the same sort of behaviour demonstrated by other Scientologists when attacking SPs.

I see that this was made years ago, but information has come out recently that suggests that they got to Marty through his child… It’s a pretty sketchy story and I don’t know all of the pieces, but all of that time spent observing him they apparently caught something that could have jeopardized the adoption. So they basically said “ you leave us alone, we leave you alone”, but then I think they actually offered him some money, as well, for him to start speaking out against the SPTV creators.

As a producer and someone who has been studying narcissistic abuse , it was the elements of a perfect storm . Quite frequently laymen people who don't work in dramatic television and film industry find it gratuitous to highlight the drama of it all . Marty probably didn't really understand that part of it . He needs to trust more but also Louis is that kind of guy you know tabloidy he's English for Gods sakes. I think Louis needed to understand more he was dealing with a man who is post trauma and takes this. Very seriously it's his life when for Louis it's just another stepping stone, a career choice .

Very interesting information you share with us here.
It seems like several things happened psychologically with Rathbun during the filming. His reaction to Theroux's repeated questions could have something to do with the fact that Rathbun was put through something skin to this in court, but in court those who posed the questions did not have friendly intentions, they had an agenda, and Rathbun would at times refuse to continue answering the same questions over and over while being cut off when he tried to answer other questions about more important aspects of his experience with Scientology and Miscavige.
Another thing may be that seeing everything acted out right in front him and being exactly as he experienced it may have triggered something in him.
I think it is fair to say that while Scientologists learn how to handle communication at a certain level, they do not learn anything about how to mature psychologically, and this is something that many ex-Scientologists have to struggle with catching up on for years on end after leaving the organization.
Rathbun's later denouncing his part in making the film is of course based on the 180 degree turn around he has made about his stance towards Scientology. I think it's good that you call him out on this because the good he has done over the previous years do not excuse or give him any right to turn on a dime and take up where he left with the old Scientology style of abusive behavior, lying, and all the rest of the many things we know about (in part thanks to his own contributing of information).
I think there's good reason to believe that many of the Scientologists who have spent most or all of their adult lives in the organization (or in other highly controlling and totalitarian cults) have not had the chance to develop emotionally past adolescence, and I think what you describe in this video illustrates it very well.
    ___________________
    Just to be fair:
Many ex-Scientologists have spoken openly and in detail about how Marty Rathbun got singled out and was the one who has probably been treated the worst by David Miscavige which is not to say that others didn't get victimized. Also, Marty Rathbun has on several occasions (while he still was openly speaking out against the practices of Scientology and David Miscavige) willingly stated that he too did a lot of bad against others which includes successfully completing the assignment (given by David Miscavige) to drive a wedge between Tom Cruise and his then wife Nicole Kidman, effectively causing the destruction of their marriage, all in order to get Cruise back into the fold of Scientology.
As such his role in spreading awareness and information about the organization of Scientology cannot be overlooked or understated.
As for his later behavior and activities, the reason for this remains something of a mystery (although we can have our 'suspicions'). I can't help but wonder where his wife is at in all of this. Have they split up? Did he loose her and then saw no reason to keep fighting a battle that Miscavige clearly would never stop waging against him, and did he somehow manage to come to an agreement with Miscavige and have now returned? Did Miscavige - an excellent manipulator as he is - manage to convince Rathbun of his sincere regrets and apologies and therefore now believes he can return in good standing to never be victimized again?
We'll probably have to wait until someone else near the top defects who can give some answers to these questions.

Thank you for confirming a vibe I had when I was watching the film. I have watched many of Mr. Theroux's documentaries and this is the only one that made me uncomfortable in seeing how Mr Rathbun seemed to enjoy the Hole reenactments. It was the pain or disgust I expected but glee in the actors suffering. Mr. Theroux showed more than once how he was uncomfortable which is what I expect from Mr.Rathbun. So once again thank you for the confirmation.

Well, in all fairness to Mr. Rathbun, he of all people should be expected to be pretty desensitized to extremely abusive behavior like that of Miscaviage, being that he was exposed first-hand to it (and participated in it) over the course of some ~22 years. Hopefully he has gotten into therapy to help re-sensitize his response to abusiveness. And to deal with his victim identity and aggressive communication style.

Thanks for making this video, Steven. I just saw "My Scientology Movie" this evening (Melbourne, Australia). I found the scene where Marty starts saying "fuck you" to Louis was very telling. It was where Marty was being asked about his doing things like organizing film crews and security details on people. I think that it is possible that Marty may find himself in litigation in the future, the people whom he ordered such actions against, should they leave the church, would potentially be able to raise a civil suit against him. There seems to be a lot of things he won't talk about on camera - the incriminating stuff.

I think what has changed in Marty is his fatherhood. He wasn't making much of a living, and what would allow him and his family to live a comfortable life for years to come amounts to crumbs to the Church of Sci-Fi. And perhaps he finds it easy enough to be able to live with his new version of events by telling himself that we all know the truth(s) no matter what he says now. His work was really already done and sparked the chain of events that finally brought an honest conversation about Sci-Fi into the media. He knows that his words now are transparent in their source and probably takes as much comfort in that as he can to live with himself and his decision to be bought.

Saw the film last night Steven. I thought it was superb- highly original. I loved the part where you spoke to Louis as though he was a public member questioning you- it was so accurate. I was shocked at the details of The Hole.. I find it hard to believe after watching it that Marty was somehow duped or misrepresented. I think that maybe towards the end he became uncomfortable with the truth Louis was presenting- that the terrible treatment meted out to scientologists and ex scientologists was something he was once involved in. I was saddened that he attacked Louis at the end- and I think Louis behaved with great dignity. as is always his style as a filmmaker, Louis lets the viewer make up their own mind- he respects our intelligence . The questions he asked during the film were the questions that were already coming into my mind. He is highly intuitive. A great piece of filmmaking .

    • @markmarco2880
      @markmarco2880 7 лет назад

astute... and correct premise, I would say...
what Marty thinks now, sorry, has been made of no or little value.
      By his own doing...
He thinks of himself as the guardian of privileged knowledge.
Seriously... a thing that does not exist.
Some things are very hard to change, and some things never do...
      Identity, for one.
Once we get an idea of who we are, we stick with it, rejecting and allowing ideas as they come in henceforth - according to what we believe.
oops, let that word slip in, a little too easily.
      Believing
      - is giving yourself away.
      And Marty believes,
that he knows way better than you or I, for one thing.
      AsThe Enforcer,
      his job never ends.
And now we have authority, according to Marty.
We all know the real value of his ( indisputable ) authority.
      Almost.
That's what does tend to happen, when your ego is inflated just the right way, the right volume and intensity- it blocks the vision, then gets thicker and darker until you really can't see anything except what you are TOLD, or led, to believe. This is quite the technology, don't you know, the real technology... Saying
"I am a scientologist" means having traded yourself
      -away-
      some time ago...
You can get used to it rather quickly, and remain unawares. It is much like a trance, Hubbards' speciality was mass hypnotism, don't you know?
Making you believe without a doubt, that was his best trick.. E-meter to reinforce and solidify the reality, remove the vestiges of doubt. This is how to get lost, or, how to create an army of devout followers... being lost.
      No doubt...?
You will soon be lost, if you think you know everything,
      and long before...
      you believe it.
I believe Marty believes he holds the key, and still can't, doesn't want to put his "tech",
-- that addicting, mesmerizing rap -
      to bed.
And that's the short story, to explain him. And no, it is not a picture of a person who is, nor able, to be honest with himself.
...as comfortable with your Self means never having to scream your fool head off, for one thing, that should be considered... a mistake, but who needs me to point at the red flags around here? I see we're thinking for ourselves...

I believe you. Marty himself said on film in the intro part of the hole that Miscavage seem to finally turn on him and after 3 days he left in the hope that he would realise his mistake as Rathburn "held the keys to the kingdom". Had he been reinstated he would've never left and I sensed the emotionally he was mourning the loss of everything that came with his Director General status.
It didn't seem that he 100% hit his bottom when he left and was always going to be vulnerable to reverting. To be out in the "wilderness", he was at times viewing some questions or even sarcasm as disrespect. Perhaps because I'm British, but Louis was not being serious when he jokingly said something about being a "disaffected ex sScientologist" when they were on their way in the car to meet another ex Scientologist. He looked genuinely hurt and upset.
Finally, it seems that he just made a deal with Scientology, to keep quiet in exchange for money and a truce but not before he walked back any damage he made. Frankly I cannot blame him as I do not walk in this shoes.

it's my understanding that Louis Theroux hasn't made an actual movie before; just actual documentaries. Also, Rathbun is not a movie director. And after seeing a couple Scientology film clips, apparently nobody in Scientology is very adept at directing films (I suspect this includes Hubbard also; I would like to see his films to be certain). At this juncture perhaps more criticism of the CoS and David Miscavige is just not needed; what is now needed is some sort of strategy to cause the whole Scientology edifice to unravel and be rendered powerless. Continually talking about what an unusually narcissistic and sadistic miscreant con man Miscavige is will run out of steam very soon. Thousands of people have spoken out already-are more really needed?

Scientology still has a COB named David Miscavige who owns more real estate than EVERYBODY I KNOW PUT TOGETHER. And he has what are in effect slaves working for him. Meanwhile plenty of people (myself tthankfully not included) are making their own money by constantly deriding the CoS and its tyrannical leader (and yes the derision is deserved). I thought the goal was to end the madness but apparently its more satisfying to repeatedly criticize David Miscavige. If you consider that this corrupt business know as Scientology has been lampooned and condemned this way and that ever since 1991 (and before) and 2006 supposedly sounded the death knell what with the Tom Cruise leaked video and Anonymous protest etc. If all this is helping to get rid of the church so effectively then why is it still here? Why is David Miscavige free to do as he pleases? Sure I'll watch the movie WHEN I RECEIVE A FREE COPY. I won't hold my breath.

The reason why it is still there is because they are protected in the US by claiming to be a religion. Lots of protection comes with that status. Also, money, and lots of it. If the church didn't take in another dime after today they'd have enough to live off for a very long time.

i do think that the moment when louis asked his questions at the moment they were outside the two of them... just after he was confronted yet again with his past and the trouble it brings in his life... it wasn't particularly good timing. so i get why marthy was in a pickle about that.
other than that, i do think its not that weird that marthy is tryiing to spin publicity his own way. its the scientology behaviour, which he followed en executed so well for decades... it's hard to get rid of that personal behaviour.
But hey, the most interesting line in the movie was 'marthy knows where the bodies are'.... i also believe there is so much that marthy isnt telling still.... maybe out of shame, maybe cause of denial... i dont know.

My Scientology Movie was the first documentary I saw about Scientology (which was just five days ago) and its scandals. I have been binge watching all Scientology in my down time for about five days and it's all quite upsetting, and I have seen a lot of Marty Rathbun in these videos and interviews. He has not appeared on the up and up at all to me. As extreme as Scientology is, I see several parallels with other "mainstream" religions. I'm happy you made it out before it was too late. I hope Shelly Miscaviage is still alive. I do recall she was involved or has knowledge of the death of a member of the Sea Org. I hope she escaped and is living incognito away from her husband. I enjoyed listening to your story about your experience and I wish you well. It will be a good day when the IRS takes their tax exemption status away, they are investigated by the FBI and Shelly Miscaviage is still alive.

With respect, Marty claims that he provided hundreds of hours of information, but that he was increasingly used as bait to create sensational moments for the movie, which he believed sullied the project and took it towards tabloid style journalism. You have to appreciate that he was not only involved with it for years upon years, he also has an awful lot more at stake than anyone else who participated in the film. As is shown at the end when the "squirrel busters" come by and harass him, they keep this from the rest of the cast so as not to upset them. He is the buffer zone between you all and the harassment of the Church, which crosses the line into bringing up his son. That burden is something he has to live with everyday.
His disappointment with the end product indicates that there were other important aspects of the Church that he divulged that perhaps didn't make the final cut. By the end of the movie, it felt to me like many things were left unsaid, or had been said and not divulged.
I appreciate your side of events, though. The truth of a matter often lies in between the opinions of many.

The Theroux family are incredibly respected writers, and journalists. Marty however, has been accused by more than one ex-church member of having real blood on his hands, even knowing where bodies are buried...

    Hi Steve
Thanks so much for your videos, I've learnt so much from you.
Something I don't get about the "hole", that terrible gulag place where executives were held in horrible conditions. These poor people, did they have to live in the set of clothes they arrived in ? Because they didn't appear to get notified, they seemed to be just sent there. So we're they stuck with the clothing they arrived in ? Because that by itself would make them feel hideous. It's so hard to wrap your mind around anyone making this happen. Some were held there for years, it's unimaginable cruelty.
The other thing I've picked up from interviews is that when these trapped individuals weren't torturing one of the group, then the were occupied by holding seances.
Can you confirm any of these things for me ?
Many thanks and the best luck to you sweetie.

In the movie Marty said 'command performance' of the hole reenactment, Marty acted triggered as you say, Marty did direct any 'tech' portrayal; Marty also called out Louie for bull bating him from the start something that is obvious in the BBC narrative Louie chose to depict; if the movie was about informing the public it wouldn't have focused on road closure and mail delivery and who was Paz anyway:) Steven your cameo was the most revealing and in the 'present' part of the movie! Marty has proven yet again that he is a top notch manipulator who I think scuttled the movie and played Louie like a fiddle.

HELLO STEVEN. MY APOLOGIES IN ADVANCE. Your personal life has NOTHING to do with this issue and I thank you for your bravery and honesty here. So many of us are BOGGLED by this Marty shift (because there is something odd going on here) and you were THERE - THAT is supposed to be the point of this.
But this "tough guy" decided to throw some “clever” and completely OFFENSIVE comments to you & your post. I cannot sit back without calling this guy out. AND THIS “MANLY-MAN, Lieutenant “PreserveBigCats,” GAVE ME A CHALLENGE to read a dictionary (gee whiz, I guess he told me!). He accused you of “starting drama” and he INSTRUCTED me to “stop letting my feelings get in the way of my thinking.” Well, this issue is full of emotion and feeling - and I am not a robot. So, here is my response to him and his challenge to “educate myself on the definition of homophobia,” because I suggested he may in fact be.
..."Well Mr. “PreserveBigCats” (and preserve them with no emotion or empathy whatsoever), since you gave me an assignment to “look up the definition of homophobia” …you may in fact be correct in my quick assessment of your hateful words. I take it back because after the little homework assignment you gave me, I’ve since discovered from Psychology Today, Merriam Webster, Wiki and other sources that you most likely suffer from MICROAGRESSION: “a small remark or statement with harmful or discriminatory implications. None of the remarks seem offensive outright. The intentions seem to be positive or analytical.” SOOOO Sir PBC, let’s revisit your original comment to Steven, shall we?:
    1. “Why are you starting drama where there is none to be had... MEN don't do that.”
    2. “Stop being a gossip QUEEN”
    3. “Little BITCH.”
NOPE, NOTHING OFFENSIVE THERE! Go troll elsewhere..."

I just wanted to add to my original post below that Marty Rathbon had a difficult start with his family which sadly to me anyway, formed his ego. He strikes me as one of those people who are a classic bully. He might get things done but only because he's menacing and he makes people afraid. That behaviour he displays shows someone to be emotionally incontinent, so they have little control over their own emotions which spill into either violence or threats to others. Absolutely nothing to be proud of, it's a giant two year old who rules using terror. Nothing to be proud of. I hope the people he has hurt already understand this about the man. Bullies do so much harm.

  • @omgsolikevalleygirl

Great video! Too bad that it was necessary, that this conflict needed to arise in the first place.
I definitely have compassion for Mr. Rathbun after all he has been through - it must be very tough for a human being to experience all of this on a daily, hourly level, in fact to participate actively in it, then to quit into the "unorganized" outside world and still retain a level of sanity.
Maybe he is also not used to the way creative work unfolds - at some point you have to let go and go with what it is.
Maybe he was expecting that the film would be telling a very specific story he had in his mind - it might be interesting to hear him out about what he has to say as well.
In any case it's unfortunate he would re-lapse into the "discredit someone utterly" method Scientology is so notorious for. Maybe he had a serious change of mind in the past 2 years?
I do hope all of the people that have been hurt by this insidious organization will be done justice one day soon. All of them are victims in a sense.
Looking forward to seeing the whole film.
All the best for the future Steve!!!

I am of the opinion, also, that Marty has sold out, settling the lawsuit and walking away with a very comfortable sum, a figure easily in the 10s of millions of dollars. Let's do remember the true colors of his heritage, as the top enforcer of a notoriously aggressive, deceptive, secretive and predatory profit-oriented organization. He was a true believer and regarded within that org as the greatest living auditor. That experience is not something that washes away. Today he loses his last opportunity to offer the world something of real value, which would be to tell the world what he knows is the true nature of The Church of Scientolgy, verses what they aim to sell you. The winner here is David Miscavige, for what it's worth, the losers are those who still follow Mark, and of course, mr Rathbun himself. He proves this by his actions and his own declarations, as the victim. Now I don't know the whole story, but I know one reporter who is knowledgable, and that's Tony Ortega....

Of course the greatest sadness in all of this is the split in the ranks. Sadly it's human nature to have disagreement and clashes of interest. While I realize it is important to make videos and documentary's that highlight the excesses there needs to be a lot of work in creating a cohesive plan. Chopping at the branches and pulling off leaves isn't going to stop this philosophy from continuing to destroy lives. Having a political plan and proper lobby to have the tax status removed is what is needed to uproot the tree and could at the very least remove the great wealth that is used to destroy dissent and opposition, without that the rest would easily follow.

Thank you for sharing this, Steven, as well as the link to Marty's blog entry, which I just read (and heartily recommend to other viewers of this video). In reading Marty's deep purple post, loaded with horribly pejorative words like beseech and cavorting as well as lots of insecure name-calling and bitchery, I came away with a strong, one word description and impression of Marty Rathbun, late 2016: Scientologist.
Whether he's been drawn back into the fold or not I don't or can't know - regardless, one of the weird aspects of CoS members portrayed on screen over the years is the fact that, as adherents of a system purporting to be the way to superhuman status, they all come across as petty, illogical, mean, rage-filled, vindictive little shits.
Marty came across poorly in the film and was probably pretty pissed when he realised that he ended up as one of the players in the film to come under scrutiny. I'm betting he was not expecting that.

Whilst I’m not defending Scientology. I do get the impression from what we see in this documentary and from what Louis says later on in the doc that Marty Rathbun was perfectly fine with Scientology and it’s regime when he was in favour with David Miscavige. It seems he only developed misgivings when some of those brutal tactics were used on him. He was happy to hand out the punishment, but cried the most when it was his time to receive it. I could be completely wrong and it’s just an opinion based on the particular side we are being shown. That said, he stuck around for a long time, even when he knew what was going on and how people were being treated and (worst of all) he was party to handing out those punishments, with impunity. Marty became so tense every time Louis tried to dig into his time in the Church, it became very evident that Marty knows and was involved in a lot more than he’s letting on - he did seem a little unhinged, the way his personality would alternate, he’d get so pissed so quickly, clearly he didn’t learn much from the bear/bull baiting sessions! I do have to agree, though, the documentary was useless and didn’t really present anything original or any read sight into Scientology, it was just a baiting exercise, hoping they’d catch something Jerry Spingeresque for the cameras.

Obviously he still wanted back in because he WENT back in. That was a huge mistake - he was given the opportunity to rise above all that and stop being a slave to such evil.

I'm simply convinced that the CoS settled the monique case, but had some kind of clause in the settlement that Marty had to commit to some public form of retraction before he can get his payout. Is he in contact with Tony Ortega or anyone even? Or did he just dump those videos on his blog out of nowhere?

I watched the movie and i thought the scenes were EXCELLENT. Wasn't it Marty himself who said the actor was CHANNELING Miscavige? Why would he praise the work then but turn around and criticize it?
He should never have gone back in, that was a huge mistake.
Besides, Scientology is on its way DOWN. It's not going to survive the coming years, not the way they think. The whole world is changing.
I really liked the movie and i thought Louis did great work, and i also think Marty is a very troubled, damaged, bitter, and conflicted person. I think he LIKED being in charge and being the bad guy and the only reason he left was bc he was sent to the hole after Miscavige got overly paranoid. He lost everything bc his position and power were challenged and he realized Miscavige was totally in control and could take EVERYTHING from him... He finally realized how vulnerable he was and got a taste of what he himself put other people through.
But he didn't show much character in the movie... Only that he lost his power and was still angry. I was really hoping he would become stronger and better and learn from his mistakes, since he had enough courage to get out. It's sad, that he's still making bad choices.

Steven Just came across this as was watching an interview with Louis Theroux of whom I am a fan. I am of the understanding that Marty is back with Scientology. Is this correct? If so it explains his betrayal and trying to discredit Louis.

I had to do a little research because watching My Scientology Movie I knew Marty was a liar. Big time. He was also a complete asshole and a bully. I think he's still working for the church and only pretending to have "escaped".

The fact the he thinks that David Miscavige is secretly threatened by him and needs him is just laughable 🤣

Do you think Marty has PTSD? Maybe the scenes in the movie figured these stress responses him him

"That's like, Marty's level" lol. I have been studying the cult of scientology and listening to the stories of survivors for weeks now so I've seen a lot of Marty and I instantly understood what you meant by that Steve.

I finally went to a Marty Rathbun you tube, it made no sense and allowed no comments. If he's getting paid they are wasting what little money they have left. Rumor has it, David is about to disappear with all the money.

5:10 through 5:30 is the clincher for me that Co$ has gotten to Marty on some level. The movie depicted Miscavige as a lunatic in the Hole scene. If Marty directed the Hole scene, that then means the guy who played Miscavige in the film took his direction on how to portray Miscavige from Marty. When Marty directed the Hole scene, he had no qualms about smearing Miscavige's name at that time bc Marty was in the mind frame of shining a light on the church's evil deeds w avengence. Right before or after Tribecca, Marty all the sudden starts trying to specifically shield Miscavige and separate him from the lunatic he was portrayed as in the film. That was the key thing for me bc if Scientology got their hooks into Marty w a settlement or whatever, THE VERY FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT condition of that settlement wld UNDOUBTABLY be for Marty to protect Miscavige's name.

It's hard to imagine Louis getting in a fight with anyone.

I can't imagine that Louis and Marty 'fight' in the same way. I _can_ imagine Louis' even temper driving Marty nuts.

Why am I not surprised that the church somehow got one of their own actors into this?

Michael - surprising - is never being remotely aware of the huge gap in logic you had to leap over to get there, your foregone conclusion... Well, it's all about believing, isn't it? Inside the bubble or out here...reality gets shoved over to make room for faith and belief, over and over and yet again. The Moral is, keep questioning and prying out the facts. When it comes to independent thought, thinking for yourself, Nothing beats being on the beat yourself, and asking your own questions. Your most powerful tool to protect you from deception is doubt.
At least scn-gy taught me... SOMETHING.

I watched that documentary 3 times. Wen Marty was recreating the anger scenes, there was a glee in his eyes. He got hostile wen confronted with his actions. He misses it.

Watched the movie, thought it was good, (the actors were great) and I'm sure Marty has dramatised on some points (overcompensating probably due to probably being a bit fucked up over his life choices) and while I think Louis is a very clever man... There was clearly a lot of baiting on his part (and that's an observation of the final edit, who knows what was cut out.)
Granted, Marty played right into that bait and lost his temper a few times, that was foolish. But as someone else said, he has a lot more at stake than anyone else in the production. It's not a great surprise that he blows up a few times, especially when there's talk of his son. You could argue that he shouldn't have got involved in the production then, but perhaps he really was a bit misled on the purpose of the film and perhaps under the impression that more awareness would come out of participating in it.
I think both sides had roles to play, Marty should've been less naive about what a tv journalist's job is - not just to investigate but to create entertainment. Likewise, it wasn't all drama and baiting, but I think I learnt more about Scientology from watching 'Going Clear' than this, and can't help feeling a bit sorry for Marty, despite him coming across as a bit dominating and narcissistic. I love Louis but this wasn't my favourite of his projects.
That's my 2 cents, I'm sure the bigger picture is a hell of a lot more complicated and we probably won't ever really know, but it seems like there's been some dishonesty on both sides.
