Hi! I loved this video, thank you, if you don't mind I do have a question. I'm considering Ottawa as a destination when I apply for Ontario immigration from England.
I don't drive, partly for environmental reasons, but also because I'm used to living in a small-ish city where I can walk, cycle, or get a bus to most places. Would you say driving is a neccessity for living in Ottawa? Would be really appreciative of any advice :)

Hello Harry! Thanks for the support and comment! Great question, you know there are a lot of people searching for that lifestyle here in Ottawa and Canada. It's the parallel between two extremes (1) living in the suburbs where you will need a car to get around unless you are in a strategic position 0 for example in Kanata near the Centrum Mall where you can walk to services, transportation, etc. Barrhaven also offers this with a location near Strandherd strip and Orleans has it's own opportunities. There are pros and cons with each. Then you have downtown which also offers areas that you can achieve what you are looking for but they have pros and cons - for example, if you are in the Glebe you have that awesome opportunity to walk / avoid car use lifestyle but it comes at a financial cost. Then you have small towns surrounding the main city which can offer this but to get from the small towns to Ottawa you will definitely need a car. There are other ways of achieving it as well. To answer your question, yes it's achievable.

As someone who has lived here for 30 years and has extensively used the bus system- I have to say that is pretty bad and it’s gotten worse!
      If
you live on a main route you’re golden. But if you live in the suburbs & off from a main route *which most people do, then the buses only come every half hour on Saturday and every hour on Sunday in a lot of places and forget about getting home after 10pm on weekends. They are adding a light rail system which has made people of Ottawa very upset because if you live in the suburban areas ie. Kanata for example - as he mentions or Barrhaven, whatever etc. it takes a long time to get into the downtown core whereas before they would have express busses that would take you to the downtown core! Now you have to take a bus, train, and a bus & usually walk further! Many people that come from other places because we are very multicultural city say we have one of the worse bus systems they’ve seen. People come from Montreal and Toronto also really hate our bus system. Unfortunately the light rail has made the commute for most a lot longer not shorter.

The reason I want to move to ottawa is because it has a decent industry in IT and also remains quiet and tranquil. And then you can party and have fun in the city when you want. I've gotten bored of cities like Toronto which are just intense all the time. Great video and keep it up.

Lalit Naidu thank you for the comment! Indeed you are right - Ottawa sifters stability and quality of life and yet if you want night life it’s there for you and if you want peace it’s also there. A great mix and diversity - everything at the right amount! What video topics would you like to see us cover?

Just a little comment. The Ottawa hospital has 3 campuses, the General, Civic and Riverside which are all part of the Ottawa Hospital. This is in addition to the other ones you name, and several other institutions such as Bruyère for example. Regarding education, the University of Ottawa is bilingual, and La cité Collégiale is another college we have but a French language one.

Moving to Ottawa this coming year. People told me to look at living in Quebec, for the lower cost, and commuting. Any thoughts? Old Hull was suggested.

    • @LivingInOttawa

Hi Loic. There are certainly some affordable options in Quebec/Gatineau/Hull. Both provinces offer different impacts on taxation, jobs, lifestyle, advantages, commute times. etc. It depends on what you are looking for - if it is a budget driven decision for housing than there are more options in Gatineau than Ottawa. But you can also find great deals throughout the outskirts of Ottawa as well. If you live in Gatineau but work in Ottawa - if daily commuting becomes a thing of the norm again (given the current pandemic) than the traffic across bridges can be a challenge. If you are looking at moving we can always connect and discuss your particular situation and what the best solution might be for you.
