    EDIT: Realizing at the end that you're part of a business promoting your services, I have to say, you must be a Gary Vaynerchuk fan. THIS is how you do business. HELP people with a problem. I had no idea you were a real estate agent until the end. No asking for likes, no asking for subs, no pounding your services down my throat... touche my friend. Great job on the video being super helpful, caring, and genuinely wanting people to do well when they come here, with a bit of "I am a real-estate agent" sprinkled in at the end. Just a fantastic job with this video! Thanks.
    Hello! I got laid off from my job in Canmore last month and am flying back there on the 15th. I was, until recently, planning on gathering my belongings and moving right to Calgary. So now, my internal debate is between Ottawa and Calgary... I wonder what I should do. Thanks for the video!
    Seems the people in Ottawa and the job market stability are two major plus points for Ottawa. Cheers.

      Thanks Mike for your feedback. I appreciate your comments and openness. I am a real estate broker who has a network of agents across Canada that I work with. I was hesitant starting this channel for the negativity that is out there towards Realtors. And having sold several homes prior to becoming an agent I can see why there is such negativity. If you are out to take advantage of people, not work hard for your clients and generally saying whatever to get a deal done then your career will be short lived. That would go for any career. That's why when I started out in building my business I was very clear and true to myself of what and how I wanted to build. I am happy to say that my business is now 95% by referral. Meaning all my business comes from past clients and warm great referrals to awesome people I enjoy working with. No cold calling - no door knocking - no mailers - simply deliver value and take great care of those people. What you see on these videos is me - laid back, easy going but consistent and hard working. Because, if I sell you on the idea of moving to Ottawa and you hate Ottawa my future business won't do so well - I am more interested in building relationships for the long term with the right people and adding value along the way. And that's what is at the core of what Gary Vee says. Yup - I watch his stuff.
      To answer your question - I am doing some research on Ottawa vs Calgary in the next few weeks to do a video about that. It's a tough call between the two because they are very similar in a lot of ways. It really comes down to your personal preference. If job stability, housing equity growth, access to major cities like Montreal, Toronto and US Eastern Seaboard is important Ottawa is a great base of operations. If you are in the Energy occupation, enjoy the West coast lifestyle and access to Mountains then Calgary is a great bet. Once I get through he research and shoot/edit the video I am hoping you will be able to see it but you may already be on and off a plane by then.
      All the best!

      I have a question: I have heard the winter can be very cold. For someone in Saskatchewan wanting to come to Ottawa to get some warmer winter, what would you say? Is Ottawa colder in the winter than Saskatchewan?

  • @lawrencetaylor5407
    @lawrencetaylor5407 3 года назад +19

    Ive lived in Ottawa 24 years. Pretty accurate. I only wish Ottawa didn't keep growing; I know every major city grows over time, but the Ottawa I saw in 1997 was more manageable in terms of traffic. Plus, I think there's a general correlation between the size of a city and the rudeness and craziness of its drivers.

    How diverse is Ottawa? How can you imagine the life of an immigrant in Ottawa who has lived in Vancouver for 5 years? Vancouver is amazing but you barely can afford anything here.

    • @LivingInOttawa
      @LivingInOttawa  4 года назад +15

      Ottawa is very diverse and multilingual city. Approximately 50% of people speak English, 32% French and the rest a mix of other languages including Chinese, Arabic, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. In fact, around 25% of residents in Ottawa were born outside of Canada. With a large population of international students, representing embassies and high commissions from all over the World as well as being the Nations Capital it attracts a large amount of immigrating families annually.

      @Roshane Stephenson Thank you Roshane. Much appreciated. Getting a second chance at life is a beautiful thing. I came across it when I went through some difficult times and transitioned to Real Estate. It provided a great opportunity to work harder on myself and be able to become the man I envisioned myself being. A diamond is only created when placed under consistent pressure and is only polished through friction. These changes and obstacles are what shape us! The other thing about second chances - I heard from a good friend whom worked in a hospice - was that there was a distinct difference of the seniors she worked with - ones that seemed much happier and fulfilled by life and at peace generally had gone through some serious hardship and were afforded a second chance at life and became more energized and fulfilled by that new passion. Your second chance is a gift!

    The picture (thumbnail) on this video is terrible. They made your face have no features, it's plain, looks like from horror moviee (check yourself). The guy who is making thumbnails for this channel should take some training (in photoshop photo editing). Other thumbnails are nice. And videos are nice anyway. By the way. if you are not mad about my comment. There is a strange pattern in Canada. Many people notice that the quality of life in Canadian cities becomes lower and lower every year. Is there the same thing in Ottawa? I am in Saskatoon and for the last year this place became SOOOOOOO much worse. It wasn't good from the start, but now it's terrible. Streets stink with diesel fumes, canabis, smell of fieces in public parks (bad sewage), public fireplaces where idiots burn trash. The air stinks, this place is not even the 2-nd world city. People also complain a lot about Toronto. They say that the crime became very high and the number of crazy drug addicts on streets is also very high. Is there the same pattern in Ottawa. Because in other cities there is a huge downfall in quality of life.

    • @LivingInOttawa
      @LivingInOttawa  3 года назад

      Thanks for the feedback! I did the thumbnails (insert awkward face here). Although that was back at the beginning of the channel and I am learning as I go. I probably should go back and update some of those thumbnails. All cities go through ebbs and flows. I can't speak for Saskatoon as I have never actually been there but being born and raised in Ottawa the quality of life has remained pretty consistent. Have to go start working on thumbnails now ;)

You can easily include great small towns like Almonte, Arnprior, Carleton Place, Kemptville, Merrickville, etc. Plenty of options and your money can go far just outside of Ottawa. Hope this doesn't come across bad to any canadians. I'm due to apply for an IEC soon and strongly debating between Montreal (a city I've visited over 4 times and have a good connection of friends and an affinity for its French culture and language) and Ottawa, a place I only did one day trip to see and tour parliament hill and the senate and the natural history museum.
    I want to stay past my IEC and given how likely I am to be accepted past my temporary stay would be significantly easier in Ottawa than in Montreal due to my developing but limited French.
    I have a couple of questions for you if you don't mind me asking:
    1. How required is advanced bilingualism in Ottawa for job opportunities in general?
    2. How easy would it be for a primarily anglophone to advance his French in Ottawa
    3. I've heard about OCTranspo's problems, particularly with the tram/trains - is having a car an absolute must in Ottawa?
    4. What's the nightlife/primary areas of entertainment/shopping in Ottawa
    Really love this series and its showcase of the city I saw only so briefly! Subsribed for more until I ultimately decide between the two great cities.

    I am looking forward to go Ottawa for college, I’m from America and I am trying to do all the research I can before considering to move there if I get accepted to become an Canadian citizen. One thing I am trying to do the most research on is for ASD (autism spectrums disorder). I am a young adult with high functioning autism. When doing the research too, they don’t have the answers I’m looking for sadly and I am hearing there are a lot of mixed emotions on how Canadians are treating autistic people here in Canada of them treating them poorly? I’m not too sure if I should believe it or not because the internet likes to push out negative more than positive. If you know, what do they do for young autistic adults and how do they help them continue to succeed to live on their own? I always thought Canadian people would be understanding and kind with all disabilities, because you guys are the #1 educated country in the world. Since you are from here and I rather hear it from a person who lives here, do you know anything on what they do for people with ASD? And if not, can you please help me or send me links to websites that I should look into? I would really appreciate it if you did because I’m so interested in doing this, please and thank you. :3 (if that’s also okay with you and I hope I am not asking for much).

      Hi Caitlin and thank you for your comment. One of my boys is on the autism spectrum and we had some experiences working through his relatively minor situation. We worked with CHEO Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and they were a great service. We had very minimal issues and never experienced any prejudice or judgement from anyone we ran into. I don't know fully the public opinion at large but in general everyday life, social media, client interactions, business associates I have never personally seen discrimination or judgement towards the autism spectrum. I would check out: www.autismontario.com/chapters/ottawa to learn more. Cheers.

    Such an honest review. I've been living in Ottawa for 16 years. The top con for me is the unbearable housing price. Back to 15 years ago, a single house was worth $200~300k, but now are all around $1 million and still rising. In some hot neighborhood, $1.5 million becomes norm.

    The government is indeed the largest employer in Ottawa but by far the most racist and discriminating. I don't agree with con #3 because many employers (including the public federal service) will actually change their language requirements if they find the right candidate. I appreciate your video but there is still a lot of bias and bs in this city that's overlooked.

    • @GK-nc6rh
      @GK-nc6rh 3 года назад

      @Daddy Yes. Why is there a lawsuit filed by the community of the black federal public servants in Ottawa? As its members were discriminated against other candidates who in turn didn't even half the required qualifications and would still receive the respective promotions. Same with perhaps hispanics, Europeans, and Arabs but they didn't bother going that far. Also, after a certain level in the government, you won't get that promotion unless you're white. Out of all ministers, one or two are of colour (for media's sake so it keeps the government as an anti-racist employer),the rest are white. I know that Ottawa is a beautiful city but the commentator HAS to be honest and include these realities as well. '

Especially with the crews taking advantage of the reduced HWY capacity during the pandemic to get the Queensway extended. They even have night crews on with flood lights throughout the night. Hunt Club can also be a bit of a nightmare but as you know being a local you have to know when to head out and when to avoid. No place, no city and no house is a 10/10. But I would (like you) live no where else and if it means sitting in traffic a little longer well it's a fair trade. Best.
