Making a Scottish Highland Dagger

  • Today in the shop I am making dagger. More specifically, a Scottish Dirk in the “Traditional Dirk” style from around the late 16 through the mid 1700s. I am using 3/16” 80Crv2 high carbon steel for the 16” blade, 1/4” brass for the bolster and pommel, and desert iron wood for the knot-work carved, through-tang handle. The end of the tang is treaded, and the pommel is tapped to secure everything together. The handle was finish sanded up to 600 grit, then stained with dark walnut, and finished with boiled linseed oil.

Killer video. That wood shark is probably Teak. Beautiful wood that when polished right seems to have a inner glow. Almost like Tigers eye. Its very dense and tough as nails. Which is why its so popular for boat decks. Being a shark. I was probably carved in the many Islands of the south Pacific. Where many tribes either thought sharks were family members who had passed on. Or even thought of sharks as a god

To build my Housemade 2x72, I bought a pneumatic 0.5"x18" grinder (suggested by Brian). It fits in tight areas great and he suggested it to remove the weld seams inside the tubing. I also used it to grind a fuller on a seax I made for myself. Worked great for that, too! Can't remember if you have air in your shop, but if you do, you might seriously consider buying one.

I only have one gripe, and it is a common gripe for me. A knife is not finished until it has a home to call it’s own. It needs a scabbard or sheath. Other that, that is an elegant weapon for a more brutal time. You are a true craftsman.

Nice dirk! An old country blacksmith I know forged many of them in years gone by, using old auto-body rasps when he could get them. not as pretty as yours because he never had a 2 x 72. he said that canola oil is not as good as light mineral oil, such as transformer oil or horse drench oil. automatic transmission oil is good too but at 100-120 degrees F.

Fabulous work! It was such a pleasure to watch as you made this. Kudos to whoever filmed and edited this, what a quality job they did. The intro with you and the dogs made me smile and I was surprised when I heard you speak because I was expecting a Scottish accent. Anyway, although I can’t buy all the tools and learn all the skills I’d need to make one myself, it made me itch to make one myself … I’m not sure why. My surname is Stewart, so perhaps it’s the old DNA that is to blame. Really enjoyed watching this, thanks- and I subscribed because of it. What a great workshop you have too and when you went outside I saw you had a covered veranda. I’m watching from England and it’s a pet peeve of mine that nobody seems to have one over here!

Doing three cycles of normalization is counterproductive - only the growth of steel crystals occurs with each heating above the recrystallization temperature. It is enough to perform the normalization once correctly - heat 30°C above the quenching temperature and let it cool slowly...
